Hello everyone! My name is Zoey, and I‘m an English/ Liberal Arts and Sciences major at Louisiana State University-Eunice. I believe that I'm an exceptional candidate for scholarships because I embody boldness, bravery, courageousness, a strong work ethic, and my objectives for the future have the nation’s best interests at heart. I‘m deeply passionate about ELA neurodivergent/ Special Education teaching. It's a profession that has the potential to shape young minds and enhance the communication skills of cognitively impaired children. I envision my career as one that utilizes my knowledge to teach students how to navigate and communicate proficiently in social settings. Moreover, one that illustrates that they can achieve anything that they desire! Likewise, I'm attracted to Travel Journalism. It'll enable me to connect with diverse cultures and develop an adequate understanding of the world. It also poses an opportunity to extend the nature of my culture as an African-American. As I advance in my college career, I plan to study abroad. I’ll visit regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and South America. I'll share stories that bring awareness to substantial issues, experiences, and the ignored perspectives of POC in modern society.     Mental Health Importance Scholarship
    Mental health is vital at all stages of life. Additionally, it includes our emotional, psychological, physical, and social well-being. It impacts how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. I maintain my mental wellness by partaking in a holistic lifestyle. Holistic health is an approach to life that considers various attributes of wellness. It urges individuals to recognize the entire person. The elements and factors surrounding it can shape and maintain overall health. I am one whose views and habits about health are particularly holistic. Between being a full-time college student and having a full-time job working over forty hours a week, my mental, physical, and nutritional health are at the highest stake. My daily routine regarding them is essential because they will significantly decline if disregarded. Physical and nutritional health go hand in hand, so I incorporate them into my routine. Moreover, the food you eat directly impacts cognitive and bodily functions. I make sure to intake only the essentials needed. I wake up at 6 am sharp every morning to prepare and eat breakfast. My breakfast consists of the MyPlate Plan. The MyPlate Plan shows your food group targets – what and how much to eat within your calorie allowance. Your food plan is personalized based on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity level. After eating my meal accordingly, I go to planet fitness and commence my workout routine. I begin my first workout with a warm-up consisting of 10 minutes of walking, jogging, or another aerobic exercise. Next, I do barbell push press, goblet squat, dumbbell single-arm row, lateral shoulder raise, bench press, and pull-ups/assisted pull-ups. Usually, I finish by 9 am. When done, I return home, shower, do my skin-care routine, and head to my college classes for the day. Throughout the rest of the evening, I continue to follow through with my MyPlate Plan for lunch and dinner. Then I wake up and repeat the following day. Additionally, my mental health is kept stable by my self-care tactics. I acknowledge every part of my person: its needs, feelings, boundaries, and triggers to keep my sanity sane! I confront and cut out all things that I'm uncomfortable with. I voice my limits and let no one pressure me into anything potentially harmful. Finally, I don't put myself in the presence of people who hurt me emotionally, including my family. My entire life, I was emotionally, verbally, and psychologically abused by family members until I cut contact. People made me feel that I couldn't cut off relatives and that "family is family," but family isn't really family if they don't see an issue with hurting you! Standing your ground is vital for peace of mind! The holistic health approach keeps my mental health in perfect order. My life is the most relaxed, stress-free, and brightest it’s ever been. Mental health matters and this is how I preserve mine.

As an English literature/Journalism major, my favorite song on the album is 'Out of the Woods.' The song's haunting melody and vivid imagery make it a tier-one track on the album.     Humanize LLC Gives In Honor of Shirley Kelley Scholarship
    Since birth, my neuro-divergent brother and I have lived with our grandparents; they were our sole providers. Our biological mother didn't desire to have a relationship with us. She’s repeatedly stated that we are “mistakes” and a “burden,” and that's why she hasn't made an effort. As for our fathers, their mentality about us was similar. My brother’s dad especially disregarded him because of his cognitive disability. However, our grandparents stood by, nurtured, protected, and provided for us. Their love was unconditional and everlasting. That was until my grandfather passed, leaving us to fend for ourselves. That’s when our entire world came tumbling down. Life changed drastically; all we had was our grandmother. She had to work exceptionally harder, taking on both parental roles; I had to step up from being a child, and my brother, well, he just stayed my brother. I was only seven, yet I had the responsibilities of the average 30-year-old mother. Cook, clean, and care for a child, all while being one myself. He was older than I but still got to enjoy his childhood; meanwhile, mine was stripped from me. You might ask, “Where was your grandmother in all this?” She was grinding. She worked two complex laboring jobs while battling Breast Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, and Glaucoma. She supplied us with every one of our needs and gave us the things we wanted whenever possible. Likewise, she made it to every basketball game, cheer competition, award ceremony, and graduation. Her love never ceased; It was just limited. There’s only so much one person can do. I never resented my grandma for how difficult life was for me at such a young age because she did all she could. I never whined about taking on duties because she didn’t ask for any of this either. It was tough for both of us! This experience is unfortunate and unforgettable and has significantly impacted the person I am. However, the struggles I witnessed and endured have molded me into a strong-willed, persevering woman. It taught me a valuable lesson as well: to appreciate what I have and the people around me. Furthermore, to fight for what I desire. Admittedly, I'm still in this situation. Currently 20, in college, working full-time to support all of us. The only difference is Grandma is 67 and can't work anymore, so now it's all on me. No pressure, right? I watched my grandmother fight all her life. Fight cancer (3 times) and tons of other medical conditions and never once groaned. I want to do the same for her; I have to do the same for her. Honestly, I could give her my all, but it would never be enough to amount to what she's done. I fight to further my education every day, not because I feel I'm indebted to her, but because she deserves to see the children she's broken her back providing for become successful. I need her to know that I recognize everything she’s done and that it rubbed off onto my character. I want to be able to take care of her as she did me. She has no idea how much love and compassion I have for her. Lastly, raising my brother and being his caretaker opened my eyes to schooling system issues and how they neglect disabled kids. It’s led me to pursue a Mass Communication/ Education degree, so I can enter the profession of special-education teaching.     Growing up, I was an avid reader, and books became my gateway to exploring different cultures and perspectives. As an African-American female, I gravitated toward stories that reflected my experiences and struggles, but I also enjoyed reading about people from different backgrounds and walks of life. Through books, I learned about the power of storytelling and how it can shape our understanding of the world. I was particularly drawn to journalism, as it offered a way to tell real-life stories and shed light on issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. I am inspired by the work of African-American journalists like Ida B. Wells, who used their platform to expose injustices and advocate for change. One of the books that profoundly impacted me was "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson. This book tells the story of the Great Migration, the movement of millions of African-Americans from the South to the North and West during the 20th century. It is a powerful exploration of racism, classism, and the struggles of African-Americans to find a better life. Reading this book made me realize the importance of telling stories often overlooked by mainstream media and the need for more diverse voices in journalism. Another book that influenced my career goals was "The Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin. This book is a collection of essays that explores the experience of being black in America. Baldwin's writing is powerful and thought-provoking, and it challenged me to think critically about the social and political issues facing our country today. It inspired me to use my platform as a journalist to shed light on social justice issues and advocate for change. In addition to my passion for journalism, I deeply love travel and exploring diverse cultures. Experiencing different perspectives and ways of life is essential for personal growth and understanding. I would love to travel to other parts of the world and immerse myself in the local culture. I want to learn about different customs, beliefs, and traditions and share those experiences with others through my writing. Journalism is not just about reporting the news; it's about telling stories that matter and making a difference in the world. I believe that representation and diversity in the media are crucial for creating a more equitable and just society, and I am committed to being a part of that change.     Scholarship for Women Golfers
    As an African American female collegiate golfer and journalist, my golf journey began unexpectedly. I had always been an avid follower of golf but never could have imagined myself playing it. Growing up, I had the opportunity to watch some of the greatest players of all time on television and read about them in magazines. Still, my interest grew when I had the chance to observe the game first-hand during a family outing. At that moment, I knew I wanted to give golf a try. Since then, my passion for golf has grown tremendously; it has become an integral part of my life. Through dedication and practice, I have become one of the top collegiate golfers in my area. My ambition and aspirations have inspired me to develop my game, not only at the collegiate level but also through professional and amateur tournaments. The game of golf has allowed me to express myself in ways that I never thought possible. It has allowed me to push myself beyond my boundaries and discover what I am truly capable of. I believe golf is vital because it has provided me with a place to channel all my energy and creative skills. Golf has also enabled me to create meaningful relationships with other individuals and groups, which will benefit me. My goal is to continue to play golf at a high level and eventually, if all goes as planned, represent my country internationally. I plan to continue to practice and train hard, as well as take lessons from elite coaches. I also want to pursue media opportunities to help raise awareness for the importance of golf as a sport for all. It is widely expressed that golfing is a male-dominated sport; however, I never let that discourage me from pursuing it. Anyone in any field can assert dominance; it’s not gender associated! Golf has undoubtedly enriched my life and helped shape me into who I am today. From humble beginnings, I have learned the value of hard work, discipline, and dedication. My journey with golf has been nothing short of amazing, and I am excited to see where it takes me next. One of the most significant challenges I have faced as a female golfer is the lack of representation and support for women's golf. Golf has traditionally been a male-dominated sport, and many courses and tournaments have been designed with male golfers in mind. As a result, female golfers often face challenges such as limited access to courses, fewer resources and opportunities, and a lack of media coverage and recognition. However, I have been fortunate to attend a university that values and supports women's golf. My team and I have access to top-notch facilities and resources, and our coaches prioritize our success on and off the course. Additionally, the sport has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, mental toughness, and resilience, which have helped me overcome any obstacles I have faced as a female golfer. Playing golf has been an enriching experience for me as a collegiate athlete. While there have been challenges to overcome as a female golfer, the sense of accomplishment and personal growth that comes with improving my skills and overcoming obstacles makes it all worth it. I am grateful for the opportunity to play golf and the lessons and experiences it has provided me on and off the course.

    As an African-American female and journalist, leadership holds intense, valuable, and life-changing meaning to me. It is not just a set of skills or qualities one possesses but a sense of responsibility and duty to uplift and empower others. Effective leadership requires empathy, democracy, and a keen understanding of the political landscape. One of the most notable black leaders in history was Martin Luther King Jr. He once said, "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus." This quote highlights the importance of democracy in leadership. True leaders don’t impose their ideas onto others but instead work to create a shared vision that everyone can get behind. A leader requires active listening, compromise, and a willingness to learn from others. Empathy is also a crucial component of leadership. Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." This quote shows the importance of understanding and connecting with others more deeply. A leader who can empathize with the experiences and struggles of those they lead is more likely to gain their trust and inspire them to work towards a common goal. Lastly, leadership cannot exist in a vacuum; the political climate must inform it. Influential figures such as Shirley Chisholm, the first Black American woman elected to Congress, understood this well. She said, "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." Chisholm recognized that leadership is not just about personal ambition but about using one's platform to serve and uplift others. A leader must bring attention and awareness to the larger social and political context we live in. To this end, I say, leadership is critical for constructing positive change in the world. Effective leadership requires empathy, democracy, and a keen understanding of the political landscape. By embodying the leadership qualities of historical black leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and Shirley Chisholm, I hope to make a difference in my community, country, and beyond. Leadership is significant to me because as history and time have passed, I've recognized the trials, tribulations, and sacrifices my ancestors have made for this country so that everyone can be equal. I want to leave behind a legacy just as impressive as theirs; a legacy that promotes equality for everyone in this nation!

    As an African-American Christian and communication/English major, I am passionate about leadership because it is an essential tool to create positive change in the world. I am incredibly passionate about the role of an ELA teacher in leadership because I believe that language is a powerful tool for building community and expressing ideas. I plan to positively impact the world through leadership as a neurodivergent ELA teacher by empowering students to use their unique strengths to become successful communicators and leaders. I am inspired by the Bible verse from Proverbs 3: 5-6 which reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” I believe that God has given me the strength and wisdom to be a leader, and I want to use my knowledge and experience to help others. I want to use my communication and English skills to develop innovative teaching strategies that enable students to understand the power of language and how to use it to create positive change in the world. I also plan to use my leadership skills to provide a safe and accepting learning environment where students can express themselves and explore their unique talents. Furthermore, I am committed to bringing an inclusive approach to teaching and leadership. One of the most significant changes I made to my lifestyle was cutting out bad habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and eating unhealthy foods. Additionally, I've commenced paying more attention to my mental health and taking care of it by doing activities I relish and seeking help when needed. I've started eating more natural foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as reducing my consumption of processed and sugary foods. Through classes, student organizations, and extra-curricular activities, I've learned about various customs, beliefs, and values. My daily routine regarding them is essential because they will significantly decline if disregarded. Physical and nutritional health go hand in hand, so I incorporate them into my routine. The food you eat directly impacts cognitive and bodily functions, so I make sure to intake only the essentials needed. I wake up at 6 am sharp every morning to prepare and eat breakfast. My breakfast consists of the MyPlate Plan. The MyPlate Plan shows your food group targets – what and how much to eat within your calorie allowance. Your food plan is personalized based on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity level. After eating my meal accordingly, I go to planet fitness and commence my workout routine. I begin my first workout with a warm-up consisting of 10 minutes of walking, jogging, or another aerobic exercise. Next, I do barbell push press, goblet squat, dumbbell single-arm row, lateral shoulder raise, bench press, and pull-ups/assisted pull-ups. Usually, I finish by 9 am. When done, I return home, shower, do my skin-care routine, and head to my college classes for the day. Throughout the rest of the evening, I continue to follow through with my MyPlate Plan for lunch and dinner. Then I wake up and repeat the following day. Additionally, my mental health is kept stable by my self-care tactics. I acknowledge every part of my person: its needs, feelings, boundaries, and triggers. I confront and cut out all things that I'm uncomfortable with. I voice my limits and let no one pressure me into anything potentially harmful.     Watercolor painting has long been a passion of mine and has served as a creative outlet for my whole life. Since I was a young child, I have been captivated by the beauty and versatility of this art form. The freedom to mix and blend colors, shape them into whatever tangible form I desire, and bring an image to life with a single brush stroke is compelling and liberating. From the texture and layering of wet-on-wet paint to the soft gradients of wet-on-dry, there is something extraordinary about the watercolor medium. When I started learning how to paint, I found myself inspired by the work of others. I had never seen art so vibrant and alive than when I looked at the traditional paintings of Chinese masters like Qi Baishi and Lu Yao. I soon realized why they had been revered for their works, as each artwork brought forth a unique atmosphere, defined by their mastery of color blending and brushwork. I found that I wanted to achieve a similar level of craftsmanship, and since then, my skill has grown immensely. The ultimate goal of my watercolor painting is to one day use it to teach children. As an aspiring elementary school art teacher, I’ll demonstrate to my pupils the joys of being creative. I want to inspire my future students and help them foster their artistic expressions through watercolor. Using a variety of blues and greys, I painted a peaceful rural scene with a small river winding its way through the background. The weather created a calm and serene atmosphere I wanted to capture in my painting. The second painting, "Sunset over the Hills," was a study in contrast to "Rainy Day." I captured vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds of the sun setting over the hills. Again, I used a variety of pigments to paint the different hues of the sunset, creating a beautiful contrast against the blue evening sky. As I painted this piece, I was captivated by the beauty of the landscape and inspired to capture it as accurately as possible. Joyner's song is an extremely raw conversation on race, and just how far apart whites and blacks are regarding how they perceive things. The song portrays deep insight into the emotions of each side and how cultural disconnect and stereotypes are causing divides between the communities. It's made clear that if individuals were more open-minded to others’ viewpoints, they'd see why people do and feel certain ways. The song commences with a white man's perception of black men and people as a whole. His feelings towards blacks consisted of every stereotype one can think of. He gives his view of the N-word, which he used numerous times throughout his argument. He argued how he's "not racist", though, just fed up with the community and its "laziness". Yet, he did acknowledge he knows there's "a disconnect" between their cultures, he just doesn't understand it. Furthermore, as he finishes expressing himself, a black man picks up where he left off. The Black man expressed how whites would never understand because they weren't black! Whites don’t know about racial targeting, poverty and constantly being denied jobs simply due to "blackness". Blacks aren't lazy, just undermined by society. Moreover, he touched on how the N-word has a different meaning when used by blacks compared to whites. Acknowledgment of "cultural disconnect" was examined as well. When all was said and done both men acknowledged each side's feelings and hugged. The message is truly important. We don't "understand" one another because no one makes an effort to listen to others voice their opinions and that's why racism is still prevalent! If we listened to one another we could start moving forward! We have to take others into account!
