Herb Collins Scholarship
Growing up, I have always dreamt of becoming an optometrist. Though it may be strange for a young girl to hope to one day be an eye doctor, I knew right away that I wanted to be in a career where I can help and treat others. In the first year of my college life, I hope to attend the University of Pikeville. I believe that the University of Pikeville has everything that I will need to become a successful optometrist and use my talents to benefit others. I plan to further my education by majoring in Biology, in hopes of a better understanding of hereditary and vision problems in order to treat future patients. For my second through fourth year of college, I plan to continue attending the University of Pikeville and reap the benefits that this university has to offer. After attending the University of Pikeville, I hope to attend the Kentucky College of Optometry and further my education in becoming a successful optometrist. The Herb Collins Scholarship will benefit me by furthering my education through the opportunity to attend college, as well as providing for my needs financially.
To start, winning this scholarship would mean I would finally be able to do what I love through educating myself in hopes of developing a better understanding of the career I hope to join. I plan to graduate from the University of Pikeville and continue my path in becoming an optometrist. After I graduate from the University of Pikeville, I plan to attend the Kentucky College of Optometry. This college will benefit my growth in optometry and interest in learning, by providing me with the education and understanding I need to become a successful optometrist. The Herb Collins Scholarship will help me achieve this plan by benefitting me through college and allowing me the financial support I need, given that I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes as a little girl. Though I have always hoped to become an optometrist, I seem to have always been burdened with Type One Diabetes as well. I was diagnosed on July 14th, 2014, when I was nine years old. I feel that it was about that time when I was in distress myself, that I knew I wanted to give back to others. I respected and continue to respect, all of the doctors that have helped me through this disease and used their knowledge to correctly diagnose me and help me figure out this new life I had to now live. Because of the admiration I have for these doctors, I feel as though another reason for my urge to become a doctor myself, is due to the respect I have for these doctors that have helped me through my sickness. Because of many doctors’ constant need to help, I have been correctly diagnosed and well treated. I hope to someday become a successful optometrist and have the same selfless urge to help others as these doctors that helped me. By getting the opportunity to attend the College and by winning the HErb Collins Scholarship, I feel that I am able to achieve that goal.
