BIPOC Scholars in STEM
I envision a future self as a skilled pediatric neurosurgeon who is also a passionate advocate for marginalized communities. To achieve this, I promise to prioritize empathy and compassion in my interactions with patients and their families, fostering a trusting and supportive environment. I will actively work to address systemic biases and disparities in healthcare access, advocating for equitable treatment for all. Additionally, I will continually seek opportunities for professional development, staying at the forefront of medical advancements and research.
The BIPOC Scholars in STEM Scholarship aligns perfectly with these goals. As a Black woman from a financially disadvantaged background, I face significant barriers to pursuing my dream of becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon. My single mother of five children has worked tirelessly to provide for our family. With one child in college, myself applying for college, and two younger siblings still in high school, the financial burden is immense.
Growing up in a household where every penny counts has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of education. I believe that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and breaking down barriers.
The BIPOC Scholars in STEM Scholarship would be more than just financial aid; it would be a catalyst for my academic and personal growth. It would provide me with the resources and support necessary to excel in my studies, conduct meaningful research, and develop the skills needed to become a successful pediatric neurosurgeon.
Moreover, this scholarship would validate my potential and inspire me to continue striving for excellence. It would send a powerful message that my dreams are valid and achievable, regardless of my background.
The field of pediatric neurosurgery desperately needs more diverse representation. Studies have shown that patients from underrepresented groups often feel more comfortable and trusting when their healthcare providers reflect their own experiences. As a Black woman, I believe I can provide unique perspectives and insights that will benefit my patients and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.
My passion for pediatric neurosurgery stems from my personal experiences and my belief in the transformative power of medicine. I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of neurological conditions on children and their families. The thought of being able to provide hope and healing to these young patients is incredibly motivating.
By investing in my education, you are not only investing in my future but also in the future of countless young lives who may benefit from my expertise as a pediatric neurosurgeon. I am committed to using my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on the world, and this scholarship would be a crucial step towards achieving that goal.
Rosa A. Wilson Scholarship
My journey towards a career in pediatric neurosurgery is deeply rooted in a profound empathy for others and a relentless curiosity about the world. I believe in the power of community and the transformative impact of human kindness.
As a pediatric neurosurgeon, I envision myself as a champion for BIPOC women facing systemic challenges. The underrepresentation of Black women in this field is a glaring disparity, with only 0.6% of board-certified practicing neurosurgeons being Black women, despite Black people comprising 14% of the national demographic. By pursuing this demanding yet fulfilling career, I am not only following my passion but also contributing to a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system.
One of the most significant challenges facing BIPOC women and children is the lack of belief they often encounter when seeking medical care. Studies have shown that BIPOC patients, particularly young girls and women, are less likely to be believed when reporting pain or other symptoms. This disparity in treatment can lead to misdiagnosis, delayed care, and even worse health outcomes.
I have personal experience with this issue. As a young Black woman, I endured a long and frustrating journey to receive a proper diagnosis for my chronic migraine. Despite persistent symptoms, I was repeatedly dismissed by healthcare providers who failed to take my concerns seriously. It was only after a young, empathetic doctor insisted on further testing that I was finally diagnosed and received appropriate treatment.
My experience highlights the systemic biases that can prevent BIPOC patients from receiving the care they need. As a pediatric neurosurgeon, I am committed to addressing these disparities and ensuring that all patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender, are treated with respect and compassion.
In addition to providing clinical care, I plan to actively engage with BIPOC communities to raise awareness about healthcare disparities and advocate for equitable access to care. I also hope to work to mentor young BIPOC women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and other STEM fields. By providing them with guidance, support, and role models, I hope to inspire the next generation of BIPOC leaders.
Furthermore, I believe in the power of research to drive positive change. I plan to conduct research focused on addressing health disparities and improving outcomes for BIPOC women. By contributing to the body of knowledge on this topic, I hope to inform policy decisions and advocate for equitable healthcare access.
Ultimately, my goal is to leverage my degree in pediatric neurosurgery to create a more just and equitable world for BIPOC women. By combining my clinical expertise with community engagement, advocacy, and research, I am confident in my ability to make a meaningful impact.

L.O.V.E. spirit, with its emphasis on a beautiful heart, a yearning to help, obedience to purpose, virtue, and a passion for education, aligns perfectly with my core values and aspirations. It's a framework that has shaped my journey and continues to inspire my goals.
The heart of service beats strongly within me. Last holiday season, I transformed this abstract notion into tangible action. Collaborating with family, community organizations, and Black Greek fraternities and sororities, I participated in a gift drive that showered over 475 underprivileged children with joy and hope. The experience was more than a mere act of charity; it was a testament to the power of community and the transformative impact of human kindness. Seeing the radiant smiles of those children ignited a fire within me, a burning desire to create lasting change. That day, I truly embodied the essence of a beautiful heart yearning to help.
My path is clear: to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. This isn't just a career choice; it's a calling. The alarming shortage of pediatric neurosurgeons, particularly Black women in this field, is a call to action. I am determined to be part of the solution. By pursuing this demanding yet fulfilling path, I am not only obedient to my purpose and passion for medicine but also striving for excellence in a field that desperately needs diverse representation. This commitment to service aligns perfectly with the virtue and passion for education that define the B.A.B.Y. L.O.V.E. spirit.

North Star Dreamers Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I was captivated by the intricate workings of the human body, a fascination ignited by countless hours spent observing and questioning the world around me. This innate curiosity, coupled with a profound empathy for others, propelled me towards a career in medicine. The prospect of healing and saving lives, particularly those of children, is a calling I cannot ignore.
Dr. Jeremy Michael Higgins’ journey from the laboratory to the marketplace is an inspiration. His ability to translate scientific discoveries into tangible products embodies the entrepreneurial spirit I admire. While our paths diverge in focus, we share a common goal: to improve lives. Dr. Higgins did so through innovation; I aspire to do so through compassionate care and medical expertise.
My path to this aspiration has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. While I excelled academically in elementary school, finding solace in the role of "star student," middle school brought unexpected health hurdles. Chronic migraines, constant hospitalization, and the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic tested my resilience. Yet, these experiences, while arduous, have forged in me a determination and empathy that will undoubtedly serve me well as a physician.
The field of medicine, particularly neurosurgery, desperately needs a more diverse workforce. As of 2023, only 1.8% to 4% of neurosurgeons in the United States are Black or African American, despite Black people comprising 14% of the national demographic. Similarly, while women make up over half of graduating medical classes each year, only 6% of board-certified practicing neurosurgeons are women. This underrepresentation is even more stark for Black women, who make up a mere 0.6% of the neurosurgical workforce.
There's also a critical need for more pediatric neurosurgeons in general. With only approximately 300 such surgeons currently practicing in the United States, access to specialized care for children with neurological conditions remains limited.
Becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon would allow me to directly address both these crucial needs. The North Star Dreamers Memorial Scholarship would be a transformative step towards realizing this dream. This financial support would not merely alleviate financial burdens but would also serve as a catalyst for my academic pursuits. By investing in my education, you are investing in the future of countless young lives.
I envision myself as a pioneering pediatric neurosurgeon, at the forefront of groundbreaking research and life-saving procedures. The challenges faced by children with neurological conditions are immense, and I am driven to develop innovative treatments and therapies. This scholarship would empower me to pursue advanced training, conduct vital research, and ultimately provide hope to families in desperate need.
By combining my passion for medicine with a deep-rooted empathy for children, I aim to make a lasting impact on the world. The North Star Dreamers Memorial Scholarship would be an invaluable stepping stone on this journey, enabling me to turn my aspirations into reality.
Caprist J. McBrown Memorial Scholarship
Mental health, particularly within Black communities, is a complex issue often shrouded in stigma. It's a problem layered like an onion, with multiple, interconnected causes. The most superficial layer reveals the stigma of being labeled "crazy" or "dramatic." Deeper still, we uncover historical connections between mental health and the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the pervasive issue of substance abuse often used as a coping mechanism. At the core, we find generational patterns of mental health struggles that can be difficult to trace.
I am a young Black woman who has lived through these layers firsthand. My own experiences with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts are intertwined with the mental health struggles of my parents and their parents before them. My father's addiction, a symptom of underlying trauma and untreated mental health issues, cast a long shadow over my childhood. Witnessing his pain and my mother's subsequent journey to recovery has profoundly shaped my perspective.
These experiences have ignited a passion to create a world where mental health is prioritized and accessible to all, especially within Black communities. While my ultimate career goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon, I recognize the importance of addressing mental health holistically. I believe entrepreneurship offers a unique platform to contribute to this cause.
My makeup artist business is the first step towards achieving financial independence and gaining invaluable experience in the business world. It is more than a source of income; it is a platform for personal growth and a stepping stone towards my long-term goals. Makeup is a versatile tool that goes beyond aesthetics, fostering self-expression, confidence, and mental health. By allowing individuals to experiment with creativity and appearance, makeup can serve as a therapeutic outlet, fostering a positive sense of self and improving overall quality of life. Experimenting with makeup has always been a calming escape for me during stressful times, so I wanted to share that solace with others. Through this venture, I aim to cultivate a supportive community, potentially increase clients' self-beauty and self-worth, and allow them respite from their mental state— even if it is only for a short while.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a lasting impact on the lives of others. Whether through groundbreaking medical advancements or building a thriving business that aids a break from a rough mentality, I am determined to make a difference. With this scholarship, I am one step closer to doing so.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
