I am from a Caribbean background, specifically Trinidad and Tobago. Growing up, I lived in a neighborhood with primarily Caribbean immigrants, which allowed me to experience a lifestyle that was very similar to that of my ancestors. Education was highly valued in my family, and my parents instilled this same value in me from a young age. In addition, the importance of community was also emphasized, which is a significant aspect of Trinidadian culture. We always set aside time to socialize with our neighbors, often playing cards and enjoying Soca or Chutney music, both of which have their roots in Trinidad.
I am currently pursuing a major in computer science and engineering due to my interest in electronics and mechanics, which was sparked by a class I took in high school. I was able to use Arduino technology to build a Self-Leveling Glove with a tilt-ball sensor and LEDs to help artists draw straight lines. I hope to continue developing this prototype and creating innovative designs with the help of a strong academic program.
In my free time, I enjoy video editing. I have been creating Anime Music Videos since middle school, using clips from various shows and synchronizing them with my preferred music to create original works of art. This hobby requires a lot of time and effort, but I find it to be enjoyable and calming. As a lab assistant for Queens Public Library, I also had the opportunity to work with people from various ages, sexual orientations, and ethnic backgrounds, which has allowed me to develop a strong sense of community and a desire to help others.

PAC: Diversity Matters Scholarship
As a Caribbean-American student studying to become a Physician Assistant (PA), my personal identity plays an integral role in shaping my interactions with patients and my goals for the future. Growing up in a diverse community in Queens, New York, I learned the value of cultural awareness and sensitivity towards individuals from all backgrounds.
My Caribbean heritage has instilled in me a strong sense of community and a desire to help those around me. My mother, an entrepreneur, ran her own highly successful home daycare before I was born, emphasizing the importance of education and always checking that I understood the lessons she taught me each day. I began volunteering at the daycare during the school year since before middle school and still do today. By incorporating toys into lessons, I made learning fun and engaging for young children, regardless of their cultural or socioeconomic background.
These experiences taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity in healthcare. I learned that patients come from all walks of life and have unique needs and backgrounds that must be taken into account when providing care. As a future PA, I aim to provide individualized care to each patient, considering their cultural and socioeconomic background, beliefs, and customs.
My experiences as a lab assistant at Queens Public Library further emphasized the importance of cultural sensitivity in healthcare. Working with individuals from various countries, I learned the value of understanding different customs and beliefs when providing care. I believe that this knowledge will be invaluable in my future role as a PA, as I seek to provide individualized care to each patient.
In addition to my Caribbean heritage, my experiences living in Queens have also shaped my identity. My neighborhood has always been tight-knit despite our different racial backgrounds. If anyone needed assistance, from household furniture installation and moving to mechanic work, I would be the first one there because they would all do the same for me. We faced many obstacles, but thanks to our community's inventiveness, we always found solutions.
As a future PA, I aim to serve as an advocate for underrepresented communities and help bridge the gap in healthcare disparities. I recognize that many individuals from underrepresented communities may face additional barriers to accessing healthcare and may be more likely to experience negative health outcomes. By utilizing my skills and knowledge, I hope to provide quality care to individuals who may have previously been overlooked or underserved.
One example of how my personal identity and experiences have influenced my approach to healthcare is my desire to promote healthy lifestyles among Caribbean-Americans. As a member of this community, I have seen firsthand the negative health outcomes that can result from unhealthy eating habits and a lack of physical activity. I hope to use my role as a PA to educate patients about the importance of healthy living and provide them with the tools they need to make positive changes in their lives.
In conclusion, my personal identity as a Caribbean-American has shaped my interactions with others and has influenced my goals as a future PA. My commitment to community and cultural sensitivity will allow me to provide individualized care to patients from all backgrounds. I hope to use my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on the healthcare industry and help address healthcare disparities in my community. Ultimately, I want to help my community live healthier, happier lives by providing compassionate and culturally sensitive care.

Maverick Grill and Saloon Scholarship
As a student in today's society, I understand the pressure to conform and follow the latest trends, whether in fashion or social media. However, I firmly believe that individuality is crucial for driving innovation and creativity, and it's essential to encourage the next generation to be true to themselves. I consider myself unique because of my cultural background. Both my parents are from the Caribbean Islands, specifically Trinidad and Tobago. Growing up in a neighborhood with primarily Caribbean immigrants, I had a lifestyle that was similar to that of my ancestors.
My parents instilled in me the value of education, which was their ticket out of poverty as children. I also learned about the importance of community, which is another aspect of Trinidadian culture. Despite facing some challenges because of my identity, such as discriminatory treatment from a teacher in fifth grade, I have found ways to express myself and give back to my community.
In high school, I discovered my interest in electronics and mechanics and used Arduino technology to create a Self-Leveling Glove with a tilt-ball sensor and LEDs. While my prototype is not fully integrated and can only be used on flat surfaces, it makes it easier for artists to draw straight lines. I hope to enhance this prototype and create groundbreaking designs with the help of a mentor.
As a resident of Queens, a multicultural melting pot, I still uphold my Trinidadian traditions and cultures. I have a passion for video editing and have been engaging in it since middle school. I create Anime Music Videos by combining clips from various shows and synchronizing them to my preferred music. It's a hobby that allows me to express my creativity and thoughts through a creative outlet. I have also taught editing to other students, and I am always amazed by the original works of art they produce once they master the fundamentals.
In addition to my personal interests, I believe giving back to my community is crucial. As a lab assistant for Queens Public Library, I had the opportunity to work with people of all ages who had immigrated from different nations. I helped them use their email, finish online forms, and print documents. One elderly man, in particular, shared stories about his past as a jazz musician, which inspired me to continue playing bass guitar. I value the importance of education as it allowed my parents to immigrate to the United States and give me the opportunities I have today.
In conclusion, my cultural background, interests, and experiences have shaped me into a unique individual. I plan to major in computer science and engineering to pursue my passion for electronics and mechanics further. I also hope to give back to my community by continuing to teach video editing and volunteering my time to assist others with their technological needs. As a student, I want to inspire others to stay true to themselves and express their creativity in their unique ways.
