Bio

I am an Afro-Latina first generational college grad student who wants the generation to come after me not to experience the hardship that I or my family have gone through to be better and to make a difference in the world. We don't have the same privileges as most people and we have to work twice as hard for equality.

Elevate Black Students in Public Policy Scholarship
I am a first generational college graduate and currently in graduate school to study Masters in Public Administration. My ultimate goal is to make an impact for thr BIPOC community in local and state government. I have been in the field of social services for about 14 years and have various experiences with trying to partner with different providers and stakeholders in the community to make a difference. I sacrificed my career, place of living, and other things to move to Washington D.C. to pursue a career in public policy. However, after hundreds of job declines even at entry level having to work for free I was discouraged and broke. So I decided to move back to Florida and decided to pivot and change my game plan in order to get involved public policy. However, the longer I have been in the community the longer I know that decisions are made on the top level on mostly with executive leadership and local government officials. Therefore, I have decided to pursue a graduate degree to make changes and reform in that capacity. Many of our black and brown youths are incarcerated or living in poverty. They don't have the supports our resources in the community to live a better life therefore a lot of time they result in illegal activities in order to provide for their family. Unfortunately sometimes in the field of social services it's more of a political business than actual support of having to help our kids who are in the system whether there involved with the department of juvenile Justice or department of children and families. One of the ways that we can impact the community locally by showing our faces in the community and letting us know that we care sometimes it takes people in the community to make those changes like we have to be the ones to look out for each other. However there are also others who able to make impact on a local government level. We can definitely start by revitalializing communities and ensuring that we have presence known. The nation's unfortunately with population growth and more money coming into the communities restart to see gentrification and more and more black communities are losing their homes and and pushing them further further out of the city. In terms of education we need to have more funding especially when it comes to the STEM, arts, business, and government. There a lot of kids who are interested in politics however do not have the resources other than social media in order to let them know what's going on. Generally speaking, youths are resorting to sports or music which is great, but if we also have programs that will really get them inform about how policy is being done they can have a great voice for their own community. More people who have lived is experience in terms of poverty in terms of inequality in racial injustices can be stronger voice in order to advocate for themselves when it comes to policy changes and reform.
