I was voted most likely to succeed by my classmates, reflecting my competitive nature and confidence in my abilities. As a four-sport athlete, I thrive on winning and enjoy playing tennis and Pickleball, which I do all day at my job. I love my work because it allows me to meet people, network, and stay active outdoors. I am social and cherish time with family and friends. Playing video games, especially Valorant, is a favorite pastime. I served as SGA Student Body President and a youth committee member for Blue Ridge Energy in Alleghany County. Known for my genuineness and honesty, I received the Freshman Integrity Award, a recognition I hold dear. I am hardworking and responsible, and I care deeply about others. Family and friends are central to my life, shaping who I am today. I enjoy volunteering and leading within my community. During the "Christmas tree season," I help my friend Ricardo and his family provide meals to over 300 Hispanic H2A workers. I eagerly assist in preparing authentic Mexican meals daily, practicing my Spanish in the process. Inspired by the beauty of nature and its protection, I plan to pursue a biology or environmental science degree at Duke University. I hope to work in the future to prevent environmental threats and contribute to sustainability initiatives through research in biodiversity and conservation biology, collaborating with local, state, and governmental agencies.

Treye Knorr Memorial Scholarship
My name is Zander Russell and I was honored to be voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by my classmates, a testament to my competitive nature and confidence in my abilities. As a four-sport athlete, winning is important, but I remain humble in defeat, cherishing the value of competition. Academically, I am driven by the belief that education is essential for success, and I am goal-oriented in all aspects of my life.
I currently work at Roaring Gap Club as the Racquets Pro Shop Assistant manager, where I spend my days outdoors, combining my love for sports with the opportunity to meet people and network. My social nature extends to my personal life, where I enjoy spending time with family and friends. Video games, particularly Valorant, are a source of enjoyment for me, adding a balanced mix to my active lifestyle. I volunteer by helping my friend Ricardo and his family provide food to the Hispanic H2A workers at Bottomley's Evergreens during the Christmas tree season. We offer authentic Mexican meals daily. Best of all, I get to sample the food we sell while helping to provide a much-needed service to our local Hispanic community. Being active in the community to make it a better place is important to me.
In addition to my athletic and social pursuits, I hold leadership roles as the AHS SGA Student Body President and a member of the Alleghany County youth committee for Blue Ridge Energy. Advocating for critical issues affecting my peers and community, I have successfully pushed for more student clubs and initiatives. Representing our county during the Washington Youth Tour and engaging with NC members of Congress have been pivotal experiences, highlighting my commitment to effecting positive change.
My commitment to integrity was recognized when I won the Freshman Integrity Award, which is a source of pride for me. Hardworking and responsible, I genuinely care about others, and my family and friends are the most important aspects of my life.
What inspires me most is the beauty of nature and the imperative to protect it. As an avid outdoors enthusiast, I plan to pursue a biology or environmental science degree at Duke University. I hope to explore ways to prevent threats and contaminants to environmental systems. Through biodiversity and conservation biology research, I hope to contribute to sustainability initiatives by leveraging data analysis and collaborating with local, state, and government agencies.
Living in a rural area abundant in natural beauty and wildlife fuels my desire to find environmentally friendly ways for our community to grow economically. Access to innovative professors and research opportunities during college will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to positively impact the world around me.
In essence, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it symbolizes an investment in the potential for positive change that education can bring. With this support, I am confident that I can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become an advocate for environmental sustainability, contributing to the betterment of both local communities and the world at large.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, my Summers are spent at the Roaring Gap Club's tennis shop. This role allows me to merge my love for being outdoors with community interaction. Whether playing tennis or organizing events, I find great joy in connecting with individuals from various backgrounds within our rural community and enjoying my beautiful surroundings.
Beyond my work, I am deeply committed to volunteer work, particularly in our local agriculture industry. During the Christmas tree season, I collaborate with friends to provide meals for Hispanic H2A workers. This endeavor supports our local Hispanic community and fosters cultural awareness. The agriculture industry is vital to our rural community. Growing up, my mother emphasized the importance of understanding that you must support our community's diversity. Providing services is essential to our community's agricultural industries.
As the Student Body President of Alleghany High School and the Alleghany County Blue Ridge Energy Cooperative youth committee member, I have actively advocated for initiatives addressing issues affecting our community. From promoting environmental sustainability to enhancing educational opportunities, I am dedicated to championing causes that contribute to the overall well-being of our rural area. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around me.
Growing up surrounded by the beauty of our rural landscape, I have developed a profound appreciation for the environment and a keen sense of responsibility to protect it. My mother ensured that my sister and I appreciated all the things some take for granted. Mom grew up on a farm and loved being outside. As a child, I remember her taking us on hikes through the woods, playing in streams at the park, and kayaking on the New River. She sent me to outdoor classes in stream ecology and to summer camps. Her admiration for nature fueled my aspiration to pursue an environmental science degree to conduct research that addresses ecological challenges.
Through my chosen field of study, I envision delving into topics such as biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable resource management. I plan to develop innovative solutions that lessen environmental threats and foster sustainable economic growth within our rural community.
Living in an area abundant in natural resources has given me a deep understanding of the delicate balance between environmental conservation and economic development. I am very aware of the challenges we face, from preserving our forests and wildlife habitats to mitigating the impacts of environmental issues on agriculture and local industries. This awareness drives my determination to pursue higher education and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to enact positive change.
A degree in environmental science is a personal pursuit, and I am committed to improving our rural community and preserving our natural heritage. Through education, research, and community engagement, I am confident that I can significantly impact our regional and local environmental and economic sustainability while protecting its natural beauty. I want others to enjoy our outdoor resources as much as I have in the future.
Skybrook Men's Golf Association Scholarship
WinnerStanding on the first tee box, gazing out at the picturesque expanse of manicured fairway before me, I feel struck by a sense of awe and apprehension. I know what an honor it is to stand here. As a member of the AHS golf team. Playing golf requires dedication, self-discipline, and consistent practice. It also involves understanding and navigating a complex system where factors like wind, terrain, and hazards come into play. Believe it or not, this is where my love of environmental biology began. Playing golf in such beautiful landscapes makes you appreciate nature and the environment. As you play a course, you begin to notice and factor in the intricate ecological systems and the interactions between organisms and the environment.
When I started studying environmental issues, I recognized this process shared similarities with golf. Golf requires an analytic mindset and the ability to access and adapt to different circumstances. You must concentrate on the details, strategize, adjust your technique, and make decisions under pressure. Golf trains a player to pay attention to details, which is essential for conducting research, data collection, and analysis. Being on the golf course cultivated my understanding and appreciation for the natural world and my place in it. It enhanced my desire to protect and conserve nature so that, in the future, others can enjoy it, too.
Playing golf taught me much more than just hitting a ball toward a distant hole. It taught me the essential values and skills needed for the next part of my journey and equipped me with valuable tools necessary for success. Golf emphasized the importance of discipline, perseverance, and strategic thinking; it also taught me how to deal with adversity and frustration and showed me the true meaning of sportsmanship. Perhaps most importantly, it introduced me to the beauty of nature and the value of protecting it. Golf is responsible for some of my life's most pivotal lessons and opportunities, and I will apply all of those lessons to the next stages of my life.
"Giving Back to Your Community" resonates with me because everyone should strive to positively influence their communities. I have worked hard to exemplify this principle. One of the things that I do to show this is finding the time to volunteer at our Chamber of Commerce to help showcase Alleghany County and all the great things it has to offer.
Being from a small rural agricultural-dependent town in North Carolina, I have also significantly impacted my community by volunteering to help supply food for the over 300 Hispanic migrant workers in the Christmas tree industry. We provide fresh, authentic Mexican meals each day from September through December.
However, one of the most meaningful opportunities I have to show is how I have given back by helping young kids, some with disabilities, learn to play golf. No other reward is as great as seeing these kids smile when they make their shots! As an athlete myself, I can relate to that feeling of joy.
