What I believe is that for real change to happen, it has to start by teaching the next generation why and how. I believe that what happens to us as kids really does stay with us and make us into the people we are today. For me that's why I love music and the arts so much.

For me, the movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. This film touched me in a way no other movie has. It’s the only movie to ever make me cry and not just a few tears, but full-on sobbing. At one point, I had to pause the movie and leave the room just to collect myself. The emotions it stirred were overwhelming, yet so deeply meaningful. The story of Hachi, a dog whose loyalty to his owner endures even after his owner’s passing, is as heartbreaking as it is beautiful. The unwavering devotion Hachi showed by waiting at the train station every day for years, hoping for his owner’s return, shattered me emotionally. Watching that kind of pure, unconditional love made me reflect on my relationships and the way I show care for the people in my life. But what truly made this movie impactful was how it shifted my perspective on others. The people at the train station didn’t fully understand why Hachi waited, yet his quiet perseverance became a part of their lives. They didn’t know the depth of his love or the loss he had suffered, and that reminded me of how little we often know about the struggles and stories of those around us. It opened my eyes to the importance of looking at others with empathy and understanding. Everyone has their own story, their own pain, and their own reasons for the things they do. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale also taught me that love can come from the most unexpected places. Hachi’s love for his owner wasn’t based on words or gestures but on a simple, profound bond. It showed me that love doesn’t always have to be dramatic or spoken aloud to be meaningful. It can come in quiet moments, in actions, or even in the loyalty of a dog who refuses to give up hope. This movie encouraged me to be more open to the different forms love can take. It’s easy to overlook or dismiss certain relationships or connections, but Hachi’s story taught me to value and cherish them all. It also inspired me to be more present and appreciative of the people in my life, knowing that love and loyalty are gifts that should never be taken for granted. Beyond its emotional impact, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale left me with a lasting lesson about humanity. We often focus on our own lives and forget to notice or care about what others might be experiencing. Just like the commuters at the station didn’t understand Hachi’s devotion, we sometimes fail to see the struggles or love that others carry with them. This movie reminded me to approach others with compassion and to never assume I fully understand their story. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale changed me in ways I didn’t expect. It showed me the depth of love and loyalty, helped me see the world with more empathy, and inspired me to appreciate the quiet, often unseen connections in life. It’s not just a movie about a dog it’s a story about the power of love, the importance of understanding, and the beauty in the bonds we share.

Mr. Connell, my high school choir teacher, is the best teacher I’ve ever had. His influence on my life goes far beyond music, he changed how I see myself and what I’m capable of achieving. Before high school, I wasn’t even planning on joining the choir. It wasn’t until Mr. Connell went out of his way to encourage me that I decided to give it a try. He switched me out of a theater class and into choir, and that decision turned out to be one of the most impactful of my life. When I first joined, I was a good singer, but under Mr. Connell’s guidance, I grew into something more. He pushed me to work harder, to believe in my voice, and to strive for excellence. Thanks to his dedication and support, I went from being just another student in the choir to making All-State Choir, a huge milestone for me. He saw potential in me that I didn’t always see in myself, and his confidence in my abilities inspired me to push past my limits and grow. Mr. Connell wasn’t just an amazing teacher; he was someone who truly cared. Every single day, you could see his passion for music and teaching. He was constantly learning, always looking for ways to improve as a teacher and make choir better for us. His ambition and work ethic were contagious, and they motivated me to aim higher in everything I did. He didn’t just teach us music; he taught us how to work hard, how to be passionate about what we do, and how to believe in ourselves. One of the hardest moments in high school came when Mr. Connell announced he was leaving. Choir is a demanding job that takes a toll on a person’s personal life, and he wanted to start a family with his wife. While I completely understood his decision, it was devastating to think about losing someone who had been such a huge part of my life. When he told us he was leaving, I started crying, and I’m not someone who cries easily. It felt like losing one of the most important people in my life. Even after he left, Mr. Connell continued to inspire me. He reached out to ask me to join the Flathead Valley Youth Choir as an intern for the choir. That simple gesture moved me deeply because I’m not usually someone’s first pick. The fact that he thought of me for such an important role showed me how much he believed in me, and it motivated me to keep working hard and give back to others. Mr. Connell’s influence goes far beyond the classroom. He taught me the power of dedication, passion, and believing in yourself. He showed me what it means to truly care about others and to give everything you have to what you love. Because of him, I’ll carry those lessons with me for the rest of my life, whether I’m singing, pursuing other passions, or helping someone else find their voice.
Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
What I love about writing is that it opens up whole new worlds, with endless possibilities for my thoughts and ideas. It’s a space where I can explore different perspectives, create complex characters, and craft intricate storylines. Writing gives me the ability to make anything possible, turning abstract concepts into tangible stories that people can connect with. It’s both a personal outlet and a means of expression, a place where I can put my deepest thoughts and emotions into something that can be shared with others. Writing allows me to explore my creativity and challenge myself with every new idea. I’ve always had ideas for writing books, and I know that I will continue to write for the rest of my life. Over the years, I’ve accumulated countless stories, characters, and plot lines in my mind, and I can’t wait to bring them to life. Whether it’s fantasy, drama, or any other genre, I have an ever-growing collection of stories waiting to be told. I find great joy in the process of writing, and it’s something I plan to pursue as a lifelong passion. In college, I’m determined to write regularly, honing my skills and experimenting with new ideas. I hope to receive feedback from professors and peers that will help me improve my craft and push my creativity even further. In addition to writing, theater has played a huge role in nurturing my passion for storytelling. Theater surrounds me with incredible stories told by talented individuals. Being involved in theater has shown me the power of narrative and the importance of sharing ideas and experiences with others. Watching performances has opened my eyes to how stories can evoke powerful emotions and connect people. The process of bringing a script to life on stage, of seeing a character’s journey unfold through action and dialogue, has deeply influenced my own approach to storytelling. It’s taught me how to develop strong, compelling characters, build suspense, and create moments that resonate with an audience. These lessons have had a significant impact on my writing, helping me think about structure, pacing, and character development in new ways. Theater has shown me how storytelling can transcend words, coming to life through performance. I want to be able to create the same kind of wonder and excitement that I feel when I watch a performance, but through my writing. Theater has also given me the opportunity to see how different voices and experiences can come together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. It has deepened my appreciation for the power of collaboration in storytelling. This has encouraged me to pursue writing with the goal of sharing my own unique perspective and experiences, hoping that they will connect with others in the same way. The stories I write are not just for me, they are for the world to experience. As I continue to grow as both a writer and a performer, I look forward to using both forms of expression to explore the world around me. I’m excited to keep developing my craft and creating stories that not only entertain, but also inspire others. Writing has given me a voice, and through my work, I hope to encourage others to find their own voices as well. Whether on the stage or in written words, I want my stories to leave a lasting impact on others, just as theater and writing have impacted me.

Through my experiences as a summer camp counselor at the Flathead Lake United Methodist Camp, Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp, and Good Grief Camp, I have learned a great deal about the power of community and the strength of children. These camps have shown me the depth of love and energy that kids can bring, as well as the challenges they face. Many of the kids I work with have experienced loss, whether through the death of a loved one or the end of something meaningful in their lives, and yet they continue to show incredible resilience. Working with these kids has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life, and it has deepened my desire to serve my community and help others who are going through similar struggles. At camp, I have the opportunity to create a safe space for children, where they can be themselves without fear of judgment or bullying. I’ve learned how important it is to foster an environment where kids can freely express their emotions, explore their creativity, and connect with one another. Through camp activities, I try to teach them the value of teamwork, empathy, and how to be a positive influence in the lives of others. My time at the Good Grief Camp has been particularly impactful because it focuses on helping children who are dealing with grief and loss. It is through this camp that I have learned how powerful it is to create a space where kids can heal, share their experiences, and know they are not alone. Watching these children process their emotions and build bonds with their peers has inspired me to continue working with youth and supporting them in their growth. As I look toward higher education, I face financial challenges that make it difficult to pursue my dreams without assistance. While I am dedicated to furthering my education and deepening my knowledge in music, theater, and performance, the costs associated with attending college are a significant barrier. I’ve always worked hard to support myself, but I recognize that I need financial support to make this next step in my journey possible. The opportunity to attend college will not only allow me to develop my craft, but also provide me with the tools to give back to my community in a more impactful way. Any assistance I can receive will be crucial in making this transition a reality and in helping me achieve my long-term goals. In addition to pursuing my education, one of my main priorities in my work with children is to ensure their safety both in person and online. As a camp counselor, I focus on building a strong sense of trust with the kids, creating an environment where they feel supported and protected. I work with my fellow counselors to establish clear rules for respectful behavior and address any conflicts or issues that arise. I emphasize to the children the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, both in real life and in the online world. With the rise of cyberbullying, I also make sure to educate kids about the importance of setting boundaries and knowing when to seek help if they encounter bullying or feel unsafe online. By teaching them these values, I hope to encourage them to create positive, supportive communities, both in their daily lives and on social media. Through my work as a counselor, I strive to be a role model for the youth I work with, guiding them to become empathetic, kind, and responsible individuals who can navigate the challenges they face with resilience.
Diane Amendt Memorial Scholarship for the Arts
Growing up, arts education had a profound impact on my life, and much of that influence can be attributed to my grandpa. He was a Vietnam veteran, a scientist, and the president of his high school glee club, and his love for music and his commitment to the arts inspired me in ways I didn’t fully understand until later. Despite his successful career in science, my grandpa always emphasized the importance of creativity, self-expression, and pursuing what you love. He encouraged me to explore my musical interests and was a constant source of support throughout my artistic journey. From a young age, I gravitated toward music and theater, both of which gave me the opportunity to express myself in ways that felt authentic. My grandpa was always there, cheering me on, whether I was performing on stage or learning a new instrument. He would often share stories of his own experiences in the glee club and how music shaped his life, which made me realize the power of the arts to connect us to our emotions and to each other. His passion for music showed me that the arts could be more than just a hobby, they could be a life-altering force that helps you grow, connect with others, and find joy even during challenging times. What inspired me most was his unwavering belief in me. No matter how discouraged I felt or how many times I doubted myself, my grandpa was always there, reminding me that I had something special to offer. He never let me give up on my dreams, whether they were artistic or otherwise. His support gave me the confidence to continue pursuing music and theater, even when I struggled with feelings of inadequacy or fear of failure. As I grew older, I realized that his belief in me wasn’t just about pushing me to succeed, it was about teaching me to trust in myself and my abilities. My grandpa’s influence has shaped my approach to the arts and my career aspirations. He taught me that pursuing the arts isn’t just about skill or recognition, it’s about the personal fulfillment that comes from expressing yourself and sharing your creativity with others. His lessons of dedication, resilience, and passion have stayed with me as I continue to develop my skills and pursue a career in music and performance. His belief in the transformative power of the arts has motivated me to use my own talents to positively impact others, just as he did throughout his life. In conclusion, my grandpa has been my greatest inspiration and biggest supporter, both in the arts and in life. Through his example, I’ve learned that the arts are not just a way to entertain, they are a way to connect with others, express our deepest emotions, and make a lasting impact. I hope to carry forward his legacy by continuing to pursue my craft with the same passion and dedication that he showed throughout his life, and to inspire others to do the same.
    Al Luna Memorial Design Scholarship
Music has played an integral role in shaping who I am today and continues to fuel my passion for artistic expression. Throughout my high school years, I struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts, but music was always there to provide me with a sense of comfort and healing. It became my outlet when I couldn’t put my emotions into words and helped me find peace during some of the darkest moments in my life. As I began to explore different forms of music through theater, choir, and self-teaching myself guitar and piano, I discovered that music had the power to connect me to myself and others in a way nothing else could. This connection to music ignited my desire to pursue a career in the arts, with the goal of using my passion to make a positive impact on the world. Throughout my journey, music has not only helped me grow as an individual but has also deepened my understanding of its potential to heal and inspire. Self-teaching guitar and piano allowed me to experience firsthand how music can be an expression of both joy and pain. It gave me the confidence to push through difficult moments and embrace my personal growth. This self taught journey made me realize that music is not just about playing an instrument or performing; it’s about sharing a part of yourself with others and using that vulnerability to connect with people on a deeper level. Whether it’s through singing in choir or performing in theater, I’ve learned that art has the unique ability to transcend barriers and unite people, no matter their background. As I move forward with my artistic pursuits, I want to use my experiences to positively impact others. I believe that music has the power to heal, uplift, and inspire people, just as it did for me when I was struggling. One of my goals is to use my skills to teach others how to express themselves through music, whether it’s through playing an instrument or singing. Music can be an incredibly therapeutic outlet, especially for those who may be dealing with difficult emotions or experiences, and I want to pass on what I’ve learned to help others find their own path to healing and self-expression. Additionally, I want to create a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. In my journey through music, I’ve learned that creativity and self-expression are not only about skill, but also about fostering a sense of belonging. I want to contribute to an environment where individuals can embrace their unique talents and share their stories without fear of judgment. I hope to create opportunities for others to explore their creativity and find empowerment through artistic expression. By helping others discover the transformative power of music, I believe I can contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive world. Ultimately, my goal is to make a positive impact through music by using my gifts to inspire, uplift, and heal. Whether through performance, teaching, or collaborating with others, I want to create art that resonates on an emotional level, helping people connect with themselves and each other. Music has been a guiding force in my life, and I hope to use it to guide others as well. Through my work, I want to encourage people to embrace their emotions, share their stories, and experience the power of music to bring about healing, joy, and connection.

I am passionate about music and performance because it has always been a powerful outlet for self expression and emotional release. Growing up, I often struggled with feelings of depression and isolation, but music became my safe space. It helped me navigate challenging times and find a sense of peace when everything else felt overwhelming. This personal connection to music is what fuels my passion and drives me to pursue a career in the arts. Music has profoundly enhanced my life by giving me the tools to understand and communicate my feelings in a way that nothing else can. It’s a universal language that transcends barriers and allows people to connect on a deeper level. When I perform, I can immerse myself in the music and communicate with an audience in ways that go beyond what words can express. Whether I’m singing in choir, acting on stage, or playing an instrument, I feel a sense of purpose and belonging that I didn’t always feel in other areas of my life. It’s a constant source of growth, as I push myself to learn new techniques, improve my skills, and take on new challenges. Beyond my own personal growth, music has had a significant impact on the lives of those around me. I’ve witnessed how music can bring people together, whether in the context of a performance or simply through shared experiences. I’ve seen friends and family members find joy, healing, and connection through music, and it inspires me to continue creating and sharing it. For example, through my self-taught journey with guitar and piano, I’ve been able to share my love for music with others by playing for friends or helping them learn to play their own instruments. The ability to make others smile or help them express themselves through music is one of the most rewarding parts of my artistic journey. My passion for music goes beyond just playing or performing it’s about using music to touch lives, inspire others, and foster a sense of community. I believe in the healing power of music and its ability to make people feel seen and understood. That’s why I want to pursue a career in music and performance: not only to continue developing my skills but also to share the transformative power of music with others. Holli Safley Memorial Music Scholarship
Music has profoundly impacted who I am today, particularly through my experiences with self-teaching guitar and piano. Throughout my high school years, I struggled with feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts, but music was always there to offer me comfort and healing. It became my outlet during the hardest moments of my life, providing me with a way to express my emotions when words couldn’t quite capture what I was feeling. I discovered that through music, I could connect with myself in a way that brought peace and solace, and this connection has shaped my desire to pursue a career in music and performance. At first, I was unsure of my abilities, especially when it came to instruments. I was drawn to guitar and piano but didn’t have formal lessons. However, I realized I could teach myself. I spent countless hours watching tutorials, learning basic chords, and gradually playing songs. There was something incredibly empowering about learning music on my own; it allowed me to explore the instruments at my own pace and discover my own style. Every small improvement felt like a victory, and as I grew more confident in my skills, my passion for music deepened. It was no longer just a form of comfort, it became a way for me to express myself creatively and authentically. Self-teaching guitar and piano also taught me perseverance. There were moments of frustration when I couldn’t get a chord right or when a song felt too difficult to play. But each challenge only fueled my desire to improve, and the sense of accomplishment when I finally mastered a song or a technique was incredibly rewarding. This process of learning on my own not only strengthened my musical abilities but also helped me build resilience and patience skills that I can apply in all areas of my life. Through teaching myself these instruments, I also realized the therapeutic power of music. Playing guitar or piano when I was feeling down gave me a sense of control and helped me process emotions that were hard to express. Whether I was playing a calming melody or something more upbeat, the act of creating music brought me a sense of peace that nothing else could. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of music to heal, and it inspired me to pursue a performance degree so I could help others experience the same healing power I did. As I continue to grow as a musician, I hope to pass on my love for music and my self-taught journey to others. I believe that self-expression through music is a powerful tool for overcoming struggles, and I want to share that with younger generations. By teaching or mentoring others, I hope to encourage them to explore their own musical abilities, whether through instruments, singing, or other forms of expression. Just as I found solace in teaching myself guitar and piano, I want others to discover the transformative power of music in their own lives. In conclusion, learning guitar and piano on my own has been a transformative journey. It has given me confidence, self-discipline, and a deeper understanding of the healing power of music. Music has been my constant source of comfort, and it has inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others experience its power as well. Through my self-taught experiences, I’ve learned that music is not just about technical skill; it’s about the emotional connection it creates and the healing it brings. I am excited to share this gift with others as I continue my musical journey.
    A Security Insurance Agency Scholarship
Insurance plays a crucial role in our everyday lives, offering protection and financial security when unexpected events occur. My dad works in the insurance industry, focusing primarily on flood insurance, and through his work, I’ve gained a deep understanding of how important insurance is to our personal and financial well being. It’s easy to overlook the significance of insurance until you face a situation where you need it. Through my dad’s work, I’ve come to appreciate just how essential it is, especially when it comes to flood insurance. Flood insurance, in particular, is a type of coverage that many people don’t fully understand until disaster strikes. Having seen firsthand the impact of floods on communities, I’ve learned that the financial devastation caused by floods can be overwhelming. Without flood insurance, people would have to shoulder the entire cost of repairing or replacing damaged property. This type of insurance is particularly important for those who live in areas at high risk for flooding, such as near rivers or coastal regions. Through my dad’s career in flood insurance, I’ve learned how crucial it is for homeowners to be prepared for unexpected floods, ensuring that they are not left with financial ruin in the aftermath of a natural disaster. I also understand from my dad’s work how insurance in general provides a financial safety net for individuals and businesses alike. Health insurance ensures that medical costs don’t overwhelm individuals, auto insurance protects against the high cost of accidents, and life insurance provides security for families in the event of an unexpected death. Without insurance, we would face the full financial burden of accidents, medical bills, or natural disasters. It’s something that people might take for granted until they need it, but I’ve seen how essential it is to have the right coverage, especially in high risk areas. My dad’s work in flood insurance has also shown me how vital insurance is for businesses. Many businesses rely on insurance to recover from disasters and ensure that they can continue to operate after a major setback. Without insurance, a business could be forced to shut down, leading to the loss of jobs and services. Through my dad’s experiences working with businesses and flood insurance, I’ve seen how important it is for companies to have adequate coverage to protect their operations and secure their future. Of course, insurance isn’t without its downsides. One of the biggest challenges is the cost. Premiums can be expensive, particularly for higher-risk areas like flood zones, and this can create financial strain for individuals and families. From what I’ve learned through my dad’s work, I’ve also realized that insurance policies can sometimes be complicated, with terms and conditions that are difficult to fully understand. People often don’t realize what’s actually covered until they need to file a claim, and that’s when they can feel frustrated if they don’t receive the payout they expected. Despite these challenges, the importance of insurance in our lives is clear. Having insurance means we’re not left facing financial ruin after unexpected events like accidents or natural disasters. My dad’s work in the flood insurance industry has shown me the critical role that insurance plays in helping people and businesses recover from disasters, providing a safety net when it’s needed most. While insurance may come with its costs and complexities, its overall benefit to our lives and well-being is undeniable.

Music has played a central role in shaping my high school experience, influencing both my personal growth and my involvement in extracurricular activities. Throughout my years in high school, music has been a constant source of comfort, inspiration, and expression, helping me navigate challenges and connect with others in meaningful ways. One of the most significant impacts of music has been on my involvement in theater and choir. When I first started participating in these activities, I wasn’t particularly confident in my abilities. I wasn’t the most talented singer or actor, and I often doubted myself. But through music, I was able to develop not only my skills but also my confidence. In theater, I’ve been able to take on lead roles, something I never thought possible when I first started. Each performance has been a chance to explore different characters and emotions, and I’ve learned that music has the power to communicate complex feelings and stories in a way that words alone cannot. Music became my outlet for creative expression, and it helped me connect with my cast mates and audience on a deeper level. In choir, I found a sense of community and belonging. Being part of a group that works together to create something beautiful taught me the value of teamwork and collaboration. As I progressed in my choir career, I was invited to join the top chamber choir and even asked to help with the Flathead Valley Youth Choir. These experiences have not only improved my musical abilities but have also taught me the importance of discipline, perseverance, and the power of working together toward a common goal. Music in this sense has helped me grow as a person, teaching me valuable life skills, while also giving me a space to express myself. Beyond these structured activities, music has also been a source of comfort during challenging times. High school can be stressful, with academic pressures, social challenges, and the uncertainty that comes with figuring out who you are. During moments of stress or uncertainty, I often turn to music as a way to process my emotions. Whether it’s playing guitar or piano, or just listening to my favorite songs, music provides an emotional release and helps me make sense of difficult feelings. It’s a reminder that I don’t have to go through things alone there are always others who feel the same way, and music has a unique way of making me feel connected to those emotions. Over the years, music has also helped me discover more about myself. I’ve learned to appreciate the stories and emotions that different songs and genres convey, and in doing so, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of my own emotions and values. Music has allowed me to explore my creativity and express myself in ways that words sometimes cannot. It’s given me confidence, helped me grow as an individual, and pushed me to step outside my comfort zone in ways I never expected. Looking back, I can see how much music has shaped my high school years. It’s been a constant companion through both the highs and lows, and it has been instrumental in helping me develop my identity. Whether it’s through the performances in theater, the friendships forged in choir, or the personal moments of reflection through music, it has had an undeniable influence on who I am today. As I continue through life, I know that music will always be a part of my journey, offering both an outlet for expression and a source of connection to the world around me.

One of the most memorable moments I’ve shared with my grandpa happened during a hunting trip in Eastern Montana. It was a crisp autumn day, and the wide-open landscape stretched out as far as I could see. My dad and brothers were excited for the hike, so we all set off together through the rugged terrain. We spent four hours hiking up and down the hills, trying to cover as much ground as possible. By the time we reached the halfway point and stopped for lunch, I was completely exhausted. My legs ached, and I couldn’t imagine going any farther. So, after a short break, I told my grandpa I wasn’t up for another hike and decided to sit out the rest of the day. While my dad and brothers continued their hike, my grandpa and I stayed behind in the truck. I expected the time in the truck to be uneventful, maybe just a bit of silence while we waited for the others to return. But instead, we spent the next two hours talking, and those two hours turned out to be more meaningful than the hike itself. My grandpa began telling me stories from his life and in the military during Vietnam, his work as a scientist, and the lessons he’d learned along the way. He spoke with such detail and wisdom that I felt like I was being given a rare glimpse into the past. It was incredible to hear how much he had lived through, the choices he had made, and how those experiences had shaped the person he had become. He shared the values that had guided him through difficult times, things like perseverance, integrity, and the importance of helping others. But it wasn’t just about his past; he was also genuinely interested in my life. He asked about my dreams, what I wanted to do in the future, and how I saw my path unfolding. Instead of giving me advice or telling me what to do, he simply listened. His questions made me reflect on what really mattered to me. At that moment, I realized that sometimes, just having someone listen can be more valuable than any advice they might give. My grandpa’s quiet wisdom allowed me to think deeply about my own future and helped me gain clarity about my goals. That afternoon, sitting in the truck with my grandpa, I learned an important lesson about slowing down. In a world that constantly encourages us to push forward, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush. Sometimes, it feels like you have to keep moving, keep achieving, and never stop to rest. But that conversation with my grandpa showed me that moments of rest are just as important as moments of action. Taking the time to reflect and connect with others can provide insights that rushing through life never will. In those two hours, I realized how important it is to listen to others and to yourself. We spend so much time trying to keep up with everyone else that we forget to check in with our own thoughts and feelings. My grandpa’s stories and his ability to listen to me helped me understand that life isn’t just about moving forward all the time. It’s also about appreciating where you are and taking the time to reflect. That time with my grandpa, in the quiet of the truck, taught me more than any hike ever could. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life: sometimes, slowing down and reflecting is the most important thing you can do.

The armed forces have always been a significant part of my life, thanks to my family’s influence. My older brother Zach has served in the Air Force for ten years, and his dedication and resilience have been a constant source of inspiration. Watching him commit to a life of service has shown me the value of discipline, perseverance, and selflessness. His journey reminds me that serving isn’t just about the uniform—it’s about dedicating yourself to something greater than your own needs. My grandfather, who served in Vietnam as a scientist, also shaped my understanding of what it means to serve. His role was behind the scenes, but his contributions were critical. He worked to ensure the safety and success of others, using his intellect and skills to make a difference. His service taught me that every role within the military is vital, whether it’s on the battlefield or in a lab. Now, my brother Xander, who is two years older than me and almost done earning his associate's degree, is preparing to join the Air Force in the medical field. His choice reflects his desire to help others and to continue our family’s legacy of service. Xander’s journey has reminded me of the diverse ways people can serve, whether it’s through flying planes, conducting research, or saving lives. Through these family members, I’ve learned to define gratitude to service members as more than just words. It’s about recognizing the sacrifices they make, from time spent away from family to the emotional and physical challenges they face. It’s about understanding that their work, no matter the role, contributes to the safety and well-being of others. Gratitude also means carrying forward the lessons they’ve taught me. Their dedication has inspired me to strive for excellence, embrace resilience, and focus on making a positive impact in my own way. The examples set by Zach, Xander, and my grandfather have shown me that true service is about using your talents to support those around you and to make the world a better place. The armed forces’ impact on my family has been profound. It’s shaped not just their lives but also mine, teaching me the value of selflessness, hard work, and the importance of contributing to something greater. As I reflect on their service, I feel immense pride and gratitude for all they’ve done and all they represent. Their dedication motivates me to live with the same sense of purpose and commitment to others.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming an astronaut. The thought of exploring space, floating weightlessly among the stars, and seeing Earth from above filled me with awe. I imagined looking out the window of a spacecraft, gazing at the planet as a small, fragile sphere suspended in a vast, endless universe. To me, astronauts were heroes who got to experience the world in a way that no one else could. I wanted that to see the world from a new perspective, to find meaning and wonder in the unknown. I held onto that dream for a long time, imagining myself in a spacesuit, stepping onto the surface of the Moon, or even Mars. But as I grew older, I began to realize that what I was searching for wasn’t just about space. It was about discovery and finding a sense of awe and connection. I wanted to see the world differently, to feel like I was part of something bigger. While I still admire astronauts and what they do, my dreams began to shift as I found other ways to explore the unknown and connect with something larger than myself. Literature, theater, and music became the places where I discovered that same sense of wonder. Through books, I could travel to distant lands, live in other times, and understand lives entirely different from my own. Literature opened my mind to endless possibilities and gave me the tools to imagine new worlds. It was a way of exploring without leaving the ground, and it helped me see life through new perspectives. Theater became another way for me to find meaning and connection. When I perform, I step into the shoes of characters who challenge me to see life in new ways. On stage, I’m able to experience emotions, tell stories, and connect with audiences in ways that feel just as profound as looking down at Earth from space. Every role I play is like a new journey, teaching me about humanity and helping me grow. Music has added another layer to this. It’s taught me to feel deeply and to express things that words alone can’t capture. Whether I’m singing in choir, playing the piano or guitar, or just listening to a powerful song, music reminds me of the beauty and complexity of life. It connects me to others and to myself, and it helps me find meaning in the small, everyday moments. While I may no longer dream of becoming an astronaut, I’ve realized that the core of what I wanted as a child hasn’t changed. I still want to see the world in a new way, to experience wonder, and to connect with something greater than myself. I’ve just found a different way to do it. Through literature, theater, and music, I’ve discovered new perspectives and found the beauty I was searching for. My path has shifted, but the essence of my childhood dream remains the same. I may not explore the stars, but I’ve found a different kind of adventure here on Earth, one that fills me with the same sense of discovery, awe, and connection.
