My life goals are to be a successful educator in mathematics and to touch the hearts of students of the next generation, just as my mother did for her students for over 20 years before passing unexpectedly. Her passing has brought a great financial burden to my family and me. I am working hard to achieve this goal by attending Henderson State University, a university in Arkansas well-known for its teacher's program. I am seeking scholarships in any way possible so that I can make it through college without taking out loans and accumulating student debt. After finishing my freshman year, I know that college is the right path for me, and the most difficult part has been the financial challenges that being a collegiate student brings, but I know that I am capable with hard work and determination to lower these difficulties. I have been very successful in my coursework, achieving a cumulative GPA of over 3.8.

I am Zachary Horne, and I am a current second year student at Henderson State University, I am majoring in Middle-level Education in Mathematics. I have always done well in school and found it easy to succeed in. Though I haven’t struggled in college, I see the importance of managing time and have been doing quite well so far.
The person that inspired me the most to attend Henderson State University and become a future educator is my mother, who passed away from cancer in her brain on July 28, 2023. My mother was an alumni from Henderson. I always looked up to everything she did, especially her profession that she excelled in teaching, and I knew just when I was in second grade that I wanted to be an educator just like her.
The reason that I chose to be a math teacher is because I had always excelled in math, and it became something that was very satisfying to me and displayed my ability to problem solve. Although it irritates me that people say that they hate math, or they aren’t good at math; I am determined to show future students that they shouldn’t have such hatred towards math, but they just may not have the proper mindset when it comes to their math classes. I hope to show students that I also care about them, and they don’t think I just see them as a student, but I also see them as their own person.
In 10 years, I see myself resembling my mother in education and educating the future generation similarly to how she did, by providing as much as an educator can for every child in my classroom. Additional to my mother’s inspiration for me to be an educator, one of my teachers in high school inspired me to specifically want to be a math teacher. In Mr. Martens’ class, he stuck with me about how he led the classroom and showed a passion for educating each student. This passion was seen by many of his students and changed many students' views on the use of mathematics.
During my time at HSU, I hope to expand my knowledge of mathematics and develop an understanding of pedagogy in mathematics. The financial burden that has been pressuring me since July of 2023, when I lost my mother, I realized that she was the reason I had a financially stable childhood. Since losing her I have realized how impactful she was to me and many others. My mother was the most loving and caring person that I have ever met in my life. She always found joy in educating children and dedicated her life to changing her students’ lives and I am inspired to do the same as her.
If I were awarded the Kumar Family Scholarship, it would help satisfy my goals of reducing college costs. I appreciate your review of my scholarship application. Your support would not only alleviate my financial worries but also play a crucial role in advancing my higher education goals and fulfilling my commitment to honoring my mother's legacy throughout my academic and professional efforts.

My goal is to be the type of teacher who students trust and look up to, someone who not only teaches math but also helps students believe in their potential. While many students say they “hate math” or find it difficult, I aim to shift that perspective by demonstrating how perseverance and a positive mindset can transform their learning experience. My faith teaches me to approach each student with patience, recognizing that each individual has unique needs and strengths. Losing my mother was one of the most heart-wrenching experiences of my life. She passed away unexpectedly, leaving a void that has shaped my journey and aspirations in profound ways. My mom was not just a parent; she was my confidante, my cheerleader, and my greatest source of inspiration. Her unwavering support encouraged me to chase my dreams, and her absence has propelled me to honor her memory through my actions.
Before her passing, my mom always emphasized the importance of education. She believed that knowledge is the key to success and that each student has the potential to achieve greatness. Her encouragement played a pivotal role in my academic achievements, as she would spend hours helping me with homework, attending my school events, and motivating me to strive for excellence. When I entered high school, I felt her pride in me swell with each accomplishment, from making the honor roll to participating in extracurricular activities. However, everything changed when I lost her.
The loss of my mother left me feeling adrift and uncertain about my future. It was difficult to focus on my studies amidst the waves of grief that overwhelmed me. There were days when simply getting out of bed felt like a monumental task. But as time passed, I began to reflect on the values she instilled in me. I realized that the best way to honor her memory was to continue pursuing my education and to make a positive impact on others, just as she had done for me.
Driven by her legacy, I found new purpose in my goal of becoming a middle school math teacher. I want to create a nurturing and supportive classroom environment where students feel safe to express themselves and are encouraged to reach their full potential. My mother’s love for teaching and her belief in the power of education continue to inspire me. I strive to emulate her kindness, patience, and determination in my future classroom, ensuring that my students know they are valued and capable.
Losing my mom has shaped my understanding of empathy and resilience. I’ve come to appreciate the importance of building connections with others, especially those who may be struggling with their own challenges. I want to be that encouraging figure in my students’ lives, just as my mother was for me. I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment that fosters their growth, and I am committed to creating that space for them.
My mother’s passing was a defining moment in my life, shaping my ambition and drive. Her legacy lives on in my commitment to education and my desire to make a difference in the lives of others. This scholarship would not only help me achieve my goals but would also serve as a tribute to the incredible woman who shaped my life in so many ways. Kyla Jo Burridge Memorial Scholarship for Brain Cancer Awareness and Support
Losing my mother to brain cancer on July 28, 2023, was a defining moment in my life. Her diagnosis, battle, and passing have profoundly shaped my perspective on the disease and my motivation to raise awareness about brain cancer. The experience was especially difficult due to the challenges we faced in her treatment. Despite her courage and our faith, a lack of timely testing and adverse reactions to certain medications made her journey even more challenging. Witnessing her resilience amid these struggles left a deep impact on me, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and support for those affected by brain cancer. My mother’s legacy as an educator and her unwavering faith and strength have inspired me to dedicate myself to becoming an educator and an advocate, supporting others and raising awareness to help prevent families from experiencing the difficulties we faced.
My personal experience with brain cancer has strengthened my resolve to support others going through similar challenges. While I am still early in my journey of advocacy, I have begun discussing brain cancer awareness within my community, openly sharing my story to help others understand the urgency and importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Unfortunately, on our journey back home, an unexpected stop in Birmingham, Alabama led us to the emergency room with my ailing mother. Witnessing her suffering over the next two months was incredibly difficult for me. I am Zachary Horne, and I am a current second year student at Henderson State University, I am majoring in Middle-level Education in Mathematics. Although I am not seeking to teach music, I am passionate in music and have been around it as a very young kid. I played the violin for 6 years and then played various low brass instruments including Trombone and Baritone throughout my time in high school.
During my time at HSU, I hope to expand my knowledge of mathematics and develop an understanding of pedagogy in mathematics. The financial burden that has been pressuring me since July 28, 2023, when I lost my mother, and she lost her battle to cancer in her brain, I realized that she was the reason I had a financially stable childhood. Since losing her I have realized how impactful she was to me and many others. My mother was the most loving and caring person that I have ever met in my life. She always found joy in educating children and dedicated her life to changing her students’ lives and I am inspired to do the same as her.
In the eyes of my brother and I, she resembled a superhero, consistently ensuring the well-being of those she cherished, regardless of the challenges she faced. Despite my mother being diagnosed with brain cancer, I never questioned her capability to achieve what seemed impossible. Post-diagnosis, her sole desire was to be a part of my senior year of high school and embark on a family vacation to Disney World. Unfortunately, on our journey back home, an unexpected stop in Birmingham, Alabama led us to the emergency room with my ailing mother. Witnessing her suffering over the next two months was incredibly difficult for me. Unfortunately, her brain cancer resurfaced just three months after going into remission, claiming the life of my beloved mother.

LeBron James Fan Scholarship
I am absolutely the biggest Lebron James fan, it is absolutely fascinating how someone can go to the NBA straight out of high school, this guy was a "young buck" destroying NBA future Hall of Famers and other veterans. Imagine you're 18 years old and you got NBA recruits showing up to your games when 99.99% of the kids your age are worried about what college recruits might show up to their games. When you think of the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) you can't not mention the "King" Lebron James.
I am a fan of Lebron James because he is an inspiration to me although I don't play basketball he shows me that if I dedicate my life to something and work really hard at it I will become successful. I am very impressed with how well Lebron transferred his skills to the NBA. Although I wasn't alive when Lebron started his NBA journey I remember watching him when I was just 5 years old, he was the very first player that I knew and what an icon he was in the league. I currently have been following Lebron throughout every team he has been on and his jerseys are the only ones I have.
There is without a doubt that Lebron is the GOAT of the NBA. Michael Jordan? WHO?! Wilt Chamberlain? WHO?! Stephen Curry? WHO?! Lebron is the one and only GOAT of basketball and nobody will ever top King James. I'm not going to sit here and list off every one of Lebron's records because all you should have to google is "NBA GOAT records" and it should pop them up, but the 4 time MVP, 4 time NBA champion, 20 time All star while still being in the league speaks for itself.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Although I’m a guy, I really feel like Billie Eilish speaks to me, even though her audience seems to be mostly female. As the biggest Billie Eilish fan and someone who’s a bit non-traditional, my top three Billie Eilish songs are without a doubt "Birds of a Feather," "Lovely," and "Hostage." What I love about Billie’s music is that every song has a deeper meaning behind it. In a world where so many artists seem to be just in it for the check, throwing out random lyrics, Billie’s songs especially these three stand out with their well-thought-out lyrics and real emotions.
First up is "Birds of a Feather." I consider this to be her biggest hit, and it’s been shared by countless content creators across different platforms... but that’s beside the point. This song speaks to me on a whole new level because it’s about finding someone who truly understands you, which feels like an almost impossible task these days.
Next is "Lovely." This one hits different for me because it’s about feeling trapped in your own mind, drowning in sadness, and trying to escape the mental prison you’re stuck in. Billie and Khalid both absolutely KILLED their parts in this song. To me, their voices together sound like two people sharing the same pain without even realizing it.
Finally, there’s "Hostage," a song I feel is underrated and deserves way more recognition (which, honestly, could be said about all of Billie’s songs). I connect with this one because it’s all about love and the fear of losing it. The lyrics express an obsessive need for someone special, a powerful feeling that can be either positive or negative depending on how that person views you.

The person that inspired me the most to attend Henderson State University and become a future educator is my mother, who passed away from cancer in her brain on July 28, 2023. My mother was an alumni from Henderson as well as a single parent who displayed hard work and determination when I was at a young age. Graduating with her master's degree while also fighting cancer. Despite how often she was busy with coursework and her career as an educator she still made sure she was there for my brothers' and I no matter how difficult times were becoming. I always looked up to everything she did, especially her profession that she excelled in teaching, and I knew just when I was in second grade that I wanted to be an educator just like her.

If I were awarded the Enders Scholarship, it would help satisfy my goals of reducing college costs. I appreciate your review of my scholarship application. Your support would not only alleviate my financial worries but also play a crucial role in advancing my higher education goals and fulfilling my commitment to honoring my mother's legacy throughout my academic and professional efforts.
