In the past, prosthetics were mainly designed to help people with mobility issues, allowing them to move around more easily. However, advances in technology have led to the development of smart prosthetics, which are equipped with sensors and other technologies that can provide users with greater control and functionality.
One of the key ways in which smart prosthetics can help people is by providing them with a greater sense of control and independence. Traditional prosthetics are often limited in their functionality, requiring the user to rely on assistive devices or support from others to perform certain tasks. Smart prosthetics, on the other hand, can be controlled using the user's own movements, allowing them to perform a wider range of activities without assistance. This can help to improve the user's quality of life and reduce their dependence on others.
Another way in which smart prosthetics can help people is by providing them with a more natural and intuitive experience. Traditional prosthetics can often feel cumbersome and awkward to use, leading to discomfort and frustration for the user. Smart prosthetics, on the other hand, can be designed to mimic the natural movements and sensations of the missing body part, providing the user with a more seamless and comfortable experience. This can help to improve the user's confidence and self-esteem, as well as their overall enjoyment of life.
In my studies, I am working on developing smart prosthetics that can help to improve the lives of people with mobility issues. For example, I am exploring the use of sensors and other technologies that can enable smart prosthetics to respond to the user's movements in real time, providing them with greater control and flexibility. I am also investigating the use of machine learning algorithms that can help to customize the prosthetic to the user's unique needs and preferences.
Overall, smart prosthetics have the potential to significantly improve the lives of people with mobility issues, providing them with greater control, functionality, and comfort.
Bold Patience Matters Scholarship
In my opinion, patience can be characterized as a state of readiness to act, a conscious choice in which there is an opportunity to wait until intuition tells us the way out. It means being able to wait your turn, knowing that the right moment will surely come. After you have done everything possible to achieve your goal, patience involves trusting in the natural course of events, really knowing when you can temporarily let things slide.
With patience, you can put your own needs on hold and still feel that this approach is reasonable and right. Why? Intuition very intelligently informs patience. It will definitely tell you when you need to hold back, continue working in your chosen direction or wait a little longer. I am ready to talk about patience day and night, because this feeling is so deeply intuitive and inextricably linked to finding the right moment, that it is impossible to achieve excellent results without it.
Patience is not the same as passivity or detachment; it is strength. Moreover, it is a way of gaining emotional freedom, allowing you to wait, observe, and know exactly when to act.
Bold Dream Big Scholarship
As Katherine Paterson once said, "A dream without a plan is just a wish." Although my dreams may seem ambitious, I developed a holistic vision and a solid plan for the next 10-15 years.
My passion will lead me to start a design and marketing consultancy that offers design and technology solutions to companies around the world after I graduate from grad school.
I will be a mentor to others. I will lead by example and create opportunities for other people. I will pursue social justice and opt to support non-profits, charities, and community efforts with my profits.
I will have my own house in a quiet suburb, where I will live with my future family. I hope to pass on my life wisdom to my children and to open all the doors to better education that I did not have as a child. I will support their endeavors and raise them to be worthy human beings.
I will live a fulfilling and meaningful life. It will be my own road and I want each page of my life story to be full of adventure. I will write a book about what really matters to me.
Several years of immigration struggle will culminate in my becoming a citizen of the United States.
The world's wonders will come alive for me when I travel to new countries. Ultimately, I will find a balance between my personal and professional lives.
Bold Great Books Scholarship
When I was at a tough crossroads of life, my father gave me the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. "The Alchemist" is a philosophical tale about finding your way in life: “if you truly want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." When I read it, it was as if I drank from a glass of pure water to the bottom and quenched my thirst for knowledge, with each "sip," with each page I read, I became a little wiser. It is filled with deep philosophical meaning and ideas, but this book is not just a wise statement of thoughts, this book clearly shows the way of life step by step, the way of a wise and decent man illuminating the whole world.
The key concept that underlies the narrative of the journey of the shepherd Santiago is the concept of “one's destiny.” Whenever we do something with joy and pleasure, it means that we are following our destiny. However, not everyone has the courage to follow this path, seeking to meet their cherished dream. These and other similar thoughts at one time greatly influenced my decisions and actions, and who knows where I would be today if I had not come to these conclusions.
The book reveals the author's philosophy of life. This is truly an extraordinary work from a literary point of view, and so much so that it can fascinate even non-readers, preferring the screen to the book page. Coelho's books inspire people, directing them to find their highest purpose in this life.
Bold Financial Freedom Scholarship
The most helpful piece of financial advice I received was in college, when one of my most influential professors advised me to never stop learning.
Change is the law of life. People who stop learning after high school or college are bound to start staying away from those who are constantly learning new things: reading books and articles, attending conferences, and taking courses to advance in their field. It has been proven that people who constantly learn earn more money. They use education as a source for new ideas and inspiration. They are aware of the state of the economy and know what financial decisions are worth making today to exaggerate their income rather than lose it.
Darius Foruks, entrepreneur and author of three books on increasing productivity, admits that when he already had two college degrees, he decided to stop and no longer study. He stopped reading, attending conferences, and looking for knowledge to help him develop. Then he noticed that things were not going well in business either. That is, when he studied, his earnings increased, he was more successful and his successes were apparent. But as soon as he gave up his education, he got the opposite result.
Last but not least, education allows you to be surrounded by other educated, successful and wealthy people. The right social environment challenges us to be our best selves.
A knowledgeable person will not be out of work even in the harshest of crises. Any skill and knowledge can be monetized, so the more knowledge, the more opportunities to increase income. This advice is relevant to everyone and at all times.
"Wise Words" Scholarship
Martin Luther King Jr. said, “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” A quote from one of history’s most transformative and inspirational figures hung in one of my school classrooms. It was only as an adult that I learned the full story behind this quote.
In his fight for freedom and justice for African Americans, Martin Luther King Jr. faced threats, criticism, and was even imprisoned more than 20 times. Yet, he continued to run the race for justice. His story has become an inspiration to people all over the world because he showed that justice can be achieved through nonviolent means if you continue to believe and fight for your cause in spite of adversity.
This saying inspired me even in the darkest times of my life, when I was diagnosed with cancer and depression in the middle of my junior year. When I felt like I was starting to give up, I remembered this quote and the story of the Great Martin Luther King Jr. This statement helped me to keep fighting, even when it was hard and painful, to keep moving forward and to achieve my goals in small steps.
There are many things beyond our control, but despite all the twists and turns of fate, we can choose to move forward. We can dream, set goals, and become the best version of ourselves every day. We can confront negativity by spreading knowledge, kindness, and love.
Imagine Dragons Origins Scholarship
I was born and raised in Moldova, a little country in Eastern Europe. Immigrating to the United States has been a dream and a goal I have been pursuing most of my conscious life. At 19, I got accepted to California State University, Long Beach, to get a world-class education that would allow me to get a job and stay in the U.S.
Growing up in a country with one of the weakest economies in the world, I know what it is to eat buckwheat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I know what it is like to live in fear for myself and my family when business rivals beat my father before my eyes until he was hospitalized. I know the inaction of the police, the corruption in all areas of life, severe unemployment, trafficking of women. I remember when my parents were building a business and brought a lot of children's clothing from abroad, but overnight, someone broke into the warehouse and stole almost all the items. My parents lost the business and all the money they had accumulated over the years, and the thieves were never found.
Despite my sincere love for my homeland, I wanted a better future for myself. The culture of my country does not encourage women to work, especially in the applied sciences, such as information technology, where 97% of employees are men. But being a housewife was not part of my plans. Since I was 13, I worked part-time to help my parents and pay for the English and coding courses, as well as for a music school I went to after classes. I was committed to education and grasped every opportunity to learn something new. I became a multiple award winner in computer science competitions among high school students from all over the country.
The philosopher Seneca said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” When I turned 19, I boarded the plane and 16 hours later found myself on American land for the first time. I felt slight vertigo from the scale of everything around me: I had never seen such large airports, tall buildings, and such an incredible variety of ethnicities and cultures in one city.
On weekends, I would get on the bus and go explore the neighborhoods around Los Angeles. Living in the U.S. gave me access to museums, concerts, and cuisine from all over the world. One day I was lucky enough to win a ticket to see Jimmy Kimmel Live, when my favorite band, Imagine Dragons, performed. I was in the front row!
To pay for my education in the U.S., my parents sold the apartment I inherited from my grandfather. Unfortunately, this money was enough for a year and a half of education, after which I became a serious burden for my parents. My visa allowed me to work only on campus. and I managed to find a job as a Digital Communications Assistant after a very long time, but I was given 12-15 hours for minimal pay and there was barely enough money for food. With the help of on-campus advisors and legal consultants, I was able to get a work permit for international students who face severe financial hardship. In my senior year, I was challenged to work full-time while studying full-time and working on my capstone projects.
Being an international student holds you back from many things you can do here in the States. Besides having to pay higher tuition and not being able to work off-campus, international students like me are disqualified from most scholarships and FAFSA. In addition, I developed fears that I would not be able to find a job and stay legally in the U.S. For the first few years, while my English was not good enough, I felt lonely. I developed depression and anxiety, which I have been treating for several years now. Two years ago I also survived cancer, but thanks to American medicine it was diagnosed at an early stage and I survived only one surgery, of which now only a scar will always remind me.
Despite all the trials of immigration, I feel that I am stronger than ever. Like in a famous Imagine Dragons’ song, the adversity I came across in life was what helped me grow to “become a believer in myself.” I can see the world from different angles and I have developed an incredible sense of empathy and love for people.
Today, I am going back to school as a graduate student of User-Centered Design and Engineering. My goal is to work as a digital product lead to advance systems and technologies for people and communities to create accessible, sustainable, and prosperous futures. I believe that my history of overcoming, dedication to education, and perseverance will help me to make an impact and inspire other immigrants to strive to the stars.
If I am fortunate enough to receive this scholarship, it will ease the burden of financing education and improve my chances of getting a work visa which will allow me to continue to move toward immigration and obtaining a Green Card.
Pandemic's Box Scholarship
The pandemic taught me to better prioritize, adapt to change, and live in better harmony with myself and the world around me.
I got more time to take better care of my health: distance learning freed up more time for sleep, which I had so neglected for four years in college. I learned how to cook instead of consuming fast food between classes on campus. Pandemic has accustomed me to exercising in absolutely any condition: lockdown, rain, hot summer - I will always find a way of activity most harmoniously suited to the particular situation. After all, there is nothing easier than laying out a yoga mat at home and quietly doing a ten-minute stretch.
Nature and solitude have replaced purely urban "entertainment," which even before the pandemic, I had very little of. But now more than ever, I realized that for complete happiness and a harmonious worldview I need only the opportunity to walk with dogs anywhere in the city and to make jogs in the fresh air. The rest of the restrictions and prohibitions do not bother me much, because I can live perfectly well without restaurants, transportation, visits to public events, and aimlessly staggering around shopping malls.
Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
I once read a powerful parable that changed my understanding of generosity forever. A man came to the Buddha and asked him, "Why am I living in poverty, why am I suffering so much? What is the reason?" The Tathagata saw the karma of all living beings, so he explained to the man that he was greedy and selfish and thus has nothing in his life. Then, the man, saddened, asked: "What is to be done?" The Buddha replied, "Sacrifice.” The man objected, "What can I sacrifice when I myself have nothing? To which the Buddha gave invaluable advice: "What do you mean you have nothing? You have hands that you can use to help others, you have feet that you can use to benefit others. You have a beautiful smile with which you can put people in a good mood, you have a tongue with which you can speak kind words.” And the man, inspired by the advice, went to practice the paramita of giving.
Giving does not have to be material. Even if we have nothing material in this life, we can share knowledge with people – it will be even a nobler form of giving. In case we do not have that either, we can just be benevolent to all living beings and if we cannot help with advice, we can at least listen to a person and comfort them with kind words.
The development of generosity is gradual. Our mind is often dominated by selfish motivations, but the road goes by the walker. I learned to start small: treat people kindly, to begin with.
