Bio

I'm a sophomore at Messiah University majoring in Biology. My goal is to pursue a career in medicine. It was my curiosity for the human body and its fundamental functions that captivated me to enter the field of medicine. During the pandemic, there seems to be a combination of fear, stress, and avoidance among many healthcare workers. And there have been a soaring demand and a shortage of healthcare providers. I feel an even stronger sense of purpose to commit myself to serving those who are suffering. Having exceptional healthcare providers is vital to a country because it allows a country to thrive. I also enjoy dancing, playing basketball, table tennis, and traveling. My peers and friends see me as a perseverant, outgoing, collaborate, and open-minded person. Life resembles an interminable road, which there are many difficulties ahead, so I will not be defeated and will be able to overcome every obstacle. I believe I am a great candidate because I have the potential to give back to those who once made a difference in my life. For example, my dance crew started to carry out fundraising performace since 2019 and made several donations to our high school for putting up a new science laboratory.

A person who has never experienced setbacks has never dreamed of anything higher. In my journeys towards self-improvement, setbacks are the norm. I still recall the sinking feeling, as my SAT scores stared back at me in 11th grade. At that time, I recognized my inability yet still pretended to act as if I was excellent; but the result in front of my eyes were undeniable proof of my extreme shortcoming. From my eyes to my heart, the disappointment reigned as I questioned myself and my future. My life mentor, Auntie PK, took note of my sinking mindset. She had me stand up again to face failure in the eyes, reminding that, great effort does not always equate to proportional payoff. She helped me persevere and resolved to train me in every aspect. This coincided with my spontaneous but ambitious fundraising project, where I led the performance team. Beyond moves and expressions, a performance team must be collaborative and united. However, through the stress of expectations and practices, our teammates often lost motivation and failed to cooperate. I surprised even myself as I discovered myself reconciliating disagreements and reinvigorating my teammates. On the day of our event, I faced my failure by challenging myself to share my story in front of 400 onlookers. This marked the first time in my life that I faced my own weaknesses, failures, and pain, but this pushed me to cast away my fear and anxiety. With that, I was motivated to move forward, while also acknowledging the challenges I overcame. Without hiding my own shortfalls due to my ego, I felt enlightened. Renewed. The depression and anxiety I had experienced were ineffable, but I believe that acknowledging my failure brought positivity towards achieving a better self and help me persevere through this challenging situation.

I had been an aimless and skeptical follower of God in my homeland, Taiwan. I read the Bible and went to church mainly because my parents did so; I barely had any knowledge of Christianity. When first arriving in the United States, I was flabbergasted by the extraordinary landscapes and geography full of woods and fields with greenish hue. Later, I realized that studying in American meant entering the verdant land of the Lord. The host family welcomed me with hospitality, and I gradually recultivated my faith in God, I began strenghthening my relationship with God as I abstained from the phone, television, and social media that display mostly misinformation and disclose the odious facet of human nature. Along with a simpler lifestyle, I found pleasure in reading the Bible and nature, in which I have explored the wonders of the world and sincerely appreciated God’s marvelous creation. By casting away the secular influences, I began my bona fide journey in seeking God. Every day I appreciate the interactions between different animals and the natural environment in the woods. In order to live a simpler life like the Amish people, my hostfather grows various organic vegetables and fruits. Pure and clean, the creek runs through the fertile land that extends deeper into the nearby trees and nurtures the plants. By reading the nature, my curiosity about the formation of life that Francis Collins, an American physician, once raised began to grow within myself. Collins mentioned, “the complexity of life required to start the process of life was beyond the ability of the universe’s chemicals to self-assemble." I was profoundly intrigued by the bold remark coming from a world-renowned geneticist. I meditated upon this statement and began asking myself: “How did life begin?” and “Why is life so complex?” Science might explain life to a certain extent, but it cannot account for the complexity of organisms, like the water flees living in the creek behind my house. Their structures and functions are irreducibly complex with countless collaborating parts; they wouldn't function properly with any of their components missing. Like many scientists who finally believed God as start the ultimate Creator of the universe, I came to understand that it is impossible for life to have existed without a supernatural designer. As I delved deeper into the Bible, my previous skepticism toward God began to dissipate. From the Scripture, I was reminded that the warmly glittering sun in the summer, the frigid snow in the winter, the flowers of iridescent colors in the spring, and the reddish orange luster of trees in autumn are all the masterpiece of God. The Bible further confirmed my speculation that God is the Creator of the universe. God’s revelation was clearly manifested during this COVID-19 pandemic, in which he has kept me and my family safe and healthy. The world ceased to function as if the pause button was hit, and my host family and I have been socially isolated amidst the pandemic. Despite this, we have gathered every morning to saunter around our house. We appreciated the birds with variegated plumage fluttering and warbling with dulcet staccato, and the voracious marmots masticating their cornucopian ambrosia. After a burst of shower, I descried the splendor of a rainbow. Suddenly, the covenant between God and Noah after the deluge struck me. I believed God wanted me to have faith in him in dealing with the pandemic and that it is near its end. More importantly, the rainbow symbolized God’s mercy of vouchsafing my host family and me with the infinite natural resources in our six-acre land.
    I Am Third Scholarship
Growing up, I have been nurtured under a family with a strong medical background. My father is a pediatrician, my mother is a nurse, my sister is an anesthesiologist, and my brother-in-law is a urologist. It appears that becoming a doctor is the path I was destined to follow. Although I once hesitated, my father’s passion for helping his patients always solidified my desire to become a doctor. I often saw my father encouraging and praying for his patients in ways beyond simple comforting. I also discovered a sense of respect and reliance his patients had for my father because he provides them with personalized care. Besides, it was my curiosity about the human body and its fundamental functions that captivated me to enter the field of medicine. During the pandemic, there have been a soaring demand and a shortage of healthcare providers. There seems to be a combination of fear, stress, and avoidance among many healthcare workers. In fact, after perceiving the danger of exposure to the virus, many healthcare providers were driven away from the field and gave up jobs in the hospital. However, with my faith in God and as the pandemic continues to grow, I feel an even stronger sense of purpose to commit myself to serving those who are suffering. Having exceptional healthcare providers is vital to a country because it allows a country to thrive. Without these healthcare providers, many countries would be in utter chaos because health is fundamental to order and wealth. During these several years, I have become more bent to pursue medicine because of my preoccupation with both my interest in medicine and my perception of the needs of many. I would also spend time in addition to schoolwork to lead a team to serve in areas where essential health resources are undersupplied and provide them with healthcare information and encouragement. I believe this is a great opportunity to learn beyond the textbook and share my love with those in need. I believe this is a great opportunity to study beyond textbook contents. Since many people around the globe continue to suffer, my father often reminds me of God’s purpose, that we are His vessels, and we are to share our faith in Him, hope, and love with those in need. Therefore, this has also become a core value of my life. And I believe this is how I am currently influencing the world full of positive energy.

My mother is a devout Christian, so since I was a child, I accompanied my mother to church on Sundays and prayer meetings to worship God and fellowship with the brothers and sisters in the church. Since I was a child, the music that inspires me the most is the poetry of the church. I used to hear my mother often say that the poetry of the church can purify people's hearts with its holy and holy power, but I didn't understand it very well when I was young. When I grew up, when I encountered stress and setbacks in my life, these poems that I had been familiar with since childhood often resounded in my heart. Whenever I picked up these poems and listened to them again, my heart was inspired. Yes, motivated. After I came to the United States to study, I found a poem that I liked very much. It was called "You raise me up." This poem helped me to stand up again from the low point of my life. As the Bible says in Isaiah 40:31, "Those who wait on the LORD will regain their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not become weary, and they will walk and not grow weary." At this time, I can truly appreciate what my mother once said to me: the sacred, holy, and purifying power that hymns bring to people. I am very grateful to my mother for bringing us these precious poems since childhood, because these poems can accompany me through setbacks, depression, sadness, and disappointment. It also made me reorganize and reflect on myself, so that the pace of my life started again.

The Bible's Micah 6:8 "Men, the LORD has shown you what is good, and what does he want from you? Just do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. " In the Bible, God wants people to do good, walk with God in righteousness, mercy, and humility, be light and salt in this world, and exert influence. Although I am currently only a sophomore student, this word of God is deeply etched in my heart. My reflection from the recent Ukrainian-Russian war is that leaders are very important! If there is no fairness, justice, mercy, and humility, it will lead the entire country down the road of destruction, and it will also harm innocent people. I also prayed to God to have mercy on me. And since I was a child, I often followed my mother to the orphanage to send some daily necessities to the children there, and sometimes played with them. He also sang hymns and performed Bible stories in churches in remote villages to bring joy and warmth to the visually impaired children there. I am very grateful to my mother for teaching me to bring God's mercy to those in need since I was a child. And when I was in high school, I also volunteered weekends at the hospital. I also experienced the pain of patients in hospitals, especially the loneliness in the hearts of elderly patients. Therefore, whenever I have the opportunity, I will accompany them and listen to them. It also comforts them to tell their past stories. They feel happy that someone is willing to listen to them. I think God has put mercy in my life so that I can help those around me in need.

I grew up in the countryside of Taiwan since I was a child. From the outside of our house, there was a green paddy field. With the changes of the seasons, I often went to the field to observe the growth process of different crops. During the harvest season, I will also go to the fields with my elders to help out, and enjoy the joy of harvesting with the adults. On weekends, my father often takes the whole family to climb mountains and get close to nature, and I especially like to look for stag beetles in nature. Sometimes, I also inadvertently see rare birds in Taiwan. These creatures are always curious about their structure, habits, and differences from humans. So after I came to the United States to study, natural science became the goal I wanted to study. And I also got my wish to be admitted to the Department of Biology. After studying biology, I was really attracted by the flora and fauna I learned. The rich experience of teaching has also led me to think and explore areas that I have never thought of and unknown. The anatomy and experimental courses in the laboratory have also opened my eyes to understand how wonderful the structure of the original creature is, and how each of them is The organs in the body can keep the whole life running and make it survive, which really makes me admire the wonder of the Creator. Entering the Department of Biology not only broadened and deepened my knowledge in this field, but also allowed me to understand the ecology of the entire nature, from small molecules to large to the protection and conservation of the entire ecology, as well as life and different species. , know how to respect and cherish.

I like to dance outside of school. My friends and I owned a dance crew of 20 people in our host family. We do some modern dance, modern dance, and sometimes we do acrobatics. Our dance crew went back to our home country Taiwan to have a performance for our families, cousins, and friends, which attracted over 400 people, and we got a lot of applause from the audience. Also, we were invited to our school for half time show last month during our school’s varsity and junior varsity basketball games, and the school and many audiences were astonished by our shows and asked us to use our talents to fundraise for the school’s new science lab, so we have been constantly engaged in this fundraising thing. So, I think dancing is fun, it can not only improve our cardiovascular system, but it can also help our school fundraising. However, due to COVID-19, we have not been able to perform for the past two years.
