Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Growing up in a garage with my mother and five siblings was like living in a small box. My mother took on the roles of both father and mother, struggling to provide for us and move us to a better community. Despite our poverty, my self-conception remained strong, showing me both the worst life can offer and the many opportunities it can present. Witnessing the daily struggles of others in my community, including my own family, has instilled in me a deep desire to see respect and positive change in people’s lives. In my school, I noticed that many Hispanic students, just like me, seemed uninterested in their education. Many of my friends faced similar challenges, working from a young age to support their families. At nine, I began working alongside my mother, cleaning houses to help pay the bills. My older siblings also worked from a young age, sacrificing their educational goals due to financial struggles. One life-altering event that significantly influenced my path was the night police officers came to our home and took my mother away. As a Hispanic family, my immediate fear was deportation. My siblings tried to shield me, but the image of my mother being taken away is etched in my memory. My oldest sister became my guardian, but the absence of my mother caused me to struggle in school. I became a troublemaker, ignoring my grades and future goals. My mental health suffered significantly during this time, and I felt deeply hurt and lost. The absence of my mother and the overwhelming responsibilities that fell on my siblings and me created a sense of hopelessness and anxiety. I struggled with feelings of abandonment, depression, and a lack of direction, which led to my disruptive behavior and disinterest in school. These challenges took a toll on my emotional well-being, making it difficult to focus on my future and causing me to question my self-worth and purpose. However, when my mother returned, her voice brought me immense joy and reminded me of the values she instilled in me: independence, dedication, and responsibility. Her disappointment in my behavior led her to enroll me in an after-school program, helping me get back on track. This period of my life was a turning point, as I realized the importance of education and the role I wanted to play in my community and within myself. I began volunteering throughout my community, finding joy in seeing the positive impact of my efforts. I started volunteering at the hospital, and the excitement I felt from witnessing the positive impact I had on patients and staff was overwhelming. These experiences solidified my dream of becoming a registered nurse. I want to be a helper, a positive force in others' lives, a source of motivation for families struggling with poverty, and an example for students, showing them that they can also accomplish their dreams. Nursing offers the perfect avenue to fulfill this dream, allowing me to care for people and nurture their health back to well-being. As I continue to manage my mental health, I have been actively educating myself through various classes focused on anxiety and stress management. These courses have provided me with valuable tools and techniques to better understand and cope with my mental health challenges. Additionally, I have discovered that running and exercising play a crucial role in maintaining my well-being. The physical activity not only helps to alleviate stress and anxiety but also boosts my mood and energy levels, allowing me to approach each day with a more positive mindset. Through this journey, I have learned that mental health is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort and self-care. By integrating what I have learned into my life, I am better prepared to support others facing similar struggles. This personal experience with mental health has not only strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in nursing but has also made me more empathetic and compassionate towards those in need. Receiving this scholarship would be instrumental in helping me attain my career goals. It would alleviate the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus more on my studies and volunteer work. This support would enable me to continue my journey toward becoming a registered nurse and eventually pursuing a doctorate degree. Through hard work, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, I am determined to make a lasting impact in the world of healthcare.

Becoming a nurse represents more than a career choice; it signifies a commitment to embody compassion, dedication, and the transformative power to positively impact lives. My journey into nursing is deeply rooted in personal experiences and shaped by my upbringing as a first-generation student. Growing up as the youngest of five siblings in a predominantly Latino community, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of limited access to quality healthcare. Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
Many of us have fond memories of playing Nintendo games with friends or family, creating unforgettable moments of fun and excitement. My favorite game to play in co-op mode is "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe." The combination of competitive racing and hilarious power-ups makes it a blast to play with others. One particularly memorable moment that solidified its place as my top choice happened during a lively family gathering. We had gathered in the living room, the excitement palpable as we booted up the game for a four-player match. The screen split into four sections, and the iconic Rainbow Road track appeared, known for its challenging curves and lack of guardrails. The tension was high as we raced through the dazzling, neon-lit course, each of us determined to claim victory. My twin sister and I were neck and neck in the final lap, our karts weaving and drifting around the track’s perilous bends. The room was filled with the sounds of roaring engines, cheerful taunts, and the occasional groan of frustration as someone fell off the edge. As we approached the final stretch, my heart pounded with anticipation. Just as she was about to cross the finish line, I seized my chance and launched a perfectly timed red shell. It struck her kart, causing it to spin out spectacularly. The room erupted in laughter and cheers. In the midst of the chaos, my younger cousin, who had been trailing behind, took advantage of the opportunity. With a burst of speed, he zoomed past us both, crossing the finish line first and claiming an unexpected victory. The look of sheer surprise and delight on his face was priceless. That race was filled with laughter, friendly rivalry, and the kind of spontaneous moments that make "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" such a beloved co-op game for me. It wasn’t just about the competition; it was about the shared joy and camaraderie that came with every twist, turn, and power-up. Moments like these are why "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" holds a special place in my heart as the ultimate co-op experience.
Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
For me, anime has always been a significant part of my life since I was a little kid. I have grown to love both romance and action genres because of the emotional depth and empowerment they bring to the stories. My first ever anime was Pokémon, and I would rewatch it so many times that I knew each type of Pokémon by heart. I vividly remember one episode where Ash Ketchum lost a battle. This episode had a profound impact on me because, despite his defeat, Ash never gave up on his dreams. He kept going, embodying the spirit of perseverance and determination. This resilience and motivation are what I find most captivating about anime. Many creators weave these themes into their stories, inspiring viewers to stay motivated and pursue their goals. Whether it’s the thrilling battles, the heartfelt romantic moments, or the characters' unwavering resolve, anime has a unique way of touching my heart and keeping me emotionally invested. Currently, I am watching "Kaiju No. 8." I love this series because it shows that no matter how old you are, you can still pursue your dreams. Set in a world constantly under threat from monstrous creatures known as kaiju, the story follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who works for a kaiju clean-up crew. Despite his mundane job, Kafka has always dreamed of joining the Defense Force, an elite group tasked with fighting and exterminating kaiju. His dream seems out of reach due to his age and circumstances until one day he gets transformed into a kaiju himself. Now possessing incredible powers, Kafka becomes known as "Kaiju No. 8" and embarks on a journey to fulfill his lifelong dream while hiding his true identity. This narrative of perseverance and transformation deeply resonates with me, reminding me that it's never too late to chase after what you truly desire.

Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
My experience with anxiety has profoundly impacted me, especially in moments of high stakes and pressure. I remember sitting in a cold classroom, surrounded by intricate biology paintings on the walls. This day was particularly significant because it was exam day for my microbiology class, the last prerequisite I needed to start nursing school. Normally, I felt confident going into exams, but this time was different. The weight of the moment pressed down on me like a brick, making me feel uncharacteristically uncomfortable. The thought of not passing this exam and having my plans delayed even further was overwhelming. For the first time, I experienced severe anxiety, feeling a heavy pressure on my chest as if my heart was about to burst. I ended up failing that day, and not knowing how to control this overwhelming feeling was very scary for me. It was the first class I had ever failed, and I felt destroyed and dumb. But this setback never stopped me. Instead, it motivated me to find ways to manage my anxiety. I started working out regularly and made sure to relax before exams. I also volunteered, which helped me gain perspective and build resilience. I realized that it is okay to feel anxiety; the key is learning how to manage it. I always remind myself why I am pursuing a college degree, which is incredibly important to me for several reasons. Firstly, it represents a path to financial stability and improved living conditions, something I’ve been striving for since my challenging upbringing. Sharing blankets and sleeping in a small garage with my family taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. A degree, especially in nursing, allows me to care for people and nurture their health back to well-being. My decision to pursue a career in nursing is deeply rooted in my desire to help others and improve my community. My challenging upbringing, combined with the support of my family and my own resilience, has prepared me for this path. I am committed to becoming a registered nurse, providing compassionate care, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Additionally, I want to help those in need and support my community in overcoming similar challenges. As a Hispanic/Latina, I am driven to empower future generations to pursue higher education and be a source of inspiration and assistance. My goal is to make a tangible difference in people's lives, helping them achieve their dreams and improve their circumstances.

Live Music Lover Scholarship
On a warm and enchanting evening on August 11, 2023, I experienced one of the most unforgettable days of my life. The air was filled with anticipation as I prepared to see Cigarettes After Sex, a band that had serenaded my soul through countless earphones but now was about to play live before my eyes. At 21, it was my first concert, and the experience was nothing short of magical. The venue buzzed with excitement, the crowd a mix of seasoned concert-goers and fellow first-timers like myself. The lights dimmed, and a hush fell over the audience as the band took the stage. The opening chords of “Crush” began to play, and the atmosphere was electrifying. The music that had once been a comforting whisper through my earbuds now resonated powerfully, enveloping me in a sweet, thrilling harmony. As the hauntingly beautiful voice of Greg Gonzalez filled the air, I felt a wave of emotion wash over me. I was transported back to my high school days, a time when their melodies provided solace during my most stressful moments. This band, whose music had been my refuge, was now performing live, creating an indescribable euphoria that lingered long after the last note played. At 8:33 pm, the crowd erupted with wild cheers as the band played the first notes of "Crush." Everyone around me knew the lyrics by heart, and as I sang along, I felt a surge of emotion, reminiscent of the joy a child feels when receiving a new toy. The concert was a sensory delight. Smoke machines added a dreamy haze to the atmosphere, while flashes of light from phones and cameras created a sparkling backdrop. It felt like being in a real-life love story, every moment more magical than the last. Each song flowed seamlessly into the next, the setlist a perfect blend of the band's melancholic and ethereal tracks. As the night wore on, the connection between the band and the audience grew stronger. Songs like "K." and "Apocalypse" filled the air, each note striking a chord deep within me. The gentle strumming of guitars, the soft yet poignant lyrics, and the collective voice of the crowd created an experience that was both intimate and grand. When the final song played, a bittersweet feeling settled in. I didn't want the night to end, but I knew I would carry this memory with me forever. The concert was everything I had hoped for and more, a beautiful blend of nostalgia and new experiences, and it solidified my love for Cigarettes After Sex in a way that listening to their albums alone never could.

From our earliest memories, she has been by my side, navigating life's ups and downs together. My identical twin sister isn't just my sibling; she's my best friend and closest confidant. Our bond transcends the typical sibling relationship, forged through shared experiences, unwavering support, and a deep understanding that only twins can truly comprehend. Growing up in a bustling household with a single mother and five siblings, we relied on each other for companionship, solace, and motivation. Despite the challenges of our upbringing—sharing blankets in a small garage, limited resources, and often meager meals like beans and eggs—she was always there, bringing joy and laughter to even the toughest moments. Our connection goes beyond mere proximity; it's rooted in a shared love for adventure, competition, and mutual respect. While I excelled academically, she shone brightly in sports, showcasing a natural athleticism that continually inspired me to push my own boundaries. Our competitiveness wasn't about outdoing each other but rather lifting each other higher, setting benchmarks that fueled our mutual drive for excellence. One poignant memory that underscores our bond occurred during our sophomore year in high school. It was a scorching hot day when we lined up for a cross-country race, both determined to conquer the challenging course. As the starting gun fired, we sprinted forward, each focused on our own strategies yet keenly aware of the other's presence. Throughout the race, I watched her navigate the terrain with grace and determination, silently marveling at her resilience. Approaching the final stretch, with only 400 meters left to the finish line, I noticed something unusual—she was right beside me, closer than ever before in a race. Concerned, I asked if she was okay, but she didn't respond. In a surge of determination mixed with worry, I accelerated, overtaking her for the first time in our competitive history. The rush of adrenaline was bittersweet, overshadowed by the fear when I crossed the finish line and couldn't find her. Panic set in as I scanned the crowd, desperately searching for her familiar figure. Finally spotting her, still running but clearly struggling, my heart sank. In a moment that felt both eternal and fleeting, she collapsed into my arms. The world seemed to stand still as I tried to wake her, my mind racing with fear and uncertainty. Medical professionals swiftly intervened, whisking her away in an ambulance. I was left trembling, clutching a phone to call our mother, struggling to find the words to explain what had happened. The relief when we received news of her recovery was overwhelming—a testament to her resilience and our unbreakable bond. Beyond the trials and triumphs of competitive races, our friendship is anchored in mutual respect, unwavering support, and a shared vision for the future. She has always been my biggest cheerleader, celebrating my achievements as fervently as her own. In moments of doubt, she offers encouragement and perspective, reminding me of my strengths and pushing me to overcome challenges with grace and determination. As we navigate adulthood, our bond continues to evolve, grounded in a foundation of shared experiences and unwavering loyalty. She remains not only my twin sister but also my pillar of strength and the embodiment of what it means to have a lifelong best friend. Together, we forge ahead, embracing new challenges, celebrating victories, and navigating life's complexities with the assurance that, no matter what, we'll always have each other's backs.

Growing up in a family with a single mother and five siblings, I witnessed firsthand the difficulties of living in poverty. We often had limited options, wearing the same clothes repeatedly and surviving on a diet of beans and eggs (frijoles y huevos). Even at night, when it was cold, we shared blankets and slept together in a small garage. Despite these challenges, I never complained because I knew we were fortunate to have a roof over our heads. However, I made a vow to myself: "I will never live like this when I grow up." My love for my family fueled my determination to achieve financial stability and create a better future for all of us. Success, to me, means achieving financial stability and providing a better quality of life for myself and my family. It means having the security of a comfortable home, a diversified wardrobe, and the ability to choose from a variety of nutritious foods. Success is also about having the freedom to pursue my passions and support my loved ones without the constant stress of financial hardship. This opportunity is a crucial step toward realizing my vision of success. It will provide me with the resources, knowledge, and skills necessary to break the cycle of poverty and build a prosperous future. By gaining access to education, mentorship, and professional networks, I can develop the competencies required to excel in my chosen field. Additionally, this opportunity will allow me to contribute to my community, inspire others facing similar hardships, and create lasting positive change. With the support and resources provided, I am confident that I can transform my vision into reality, achieving financial stability and contributing to the betterment of my community. Ultimately, this opportunity will help me lay a solid foundation for a prosperous and fulfilling future. It will enable me to create a legacy of resilience, determination, and success that my children and future generations can build upon. Breaking the cycle of poverty involves more than just hard work; it requires knowledge and strategic planning. Many immigrant parents, like my mother, do not have access to information about financial tools such as Roth IRAs, 401(k) plans, and college savings plans. It's not that they don't want to invest in their future, but they often lack the knowledge and resources to do so. My mother is a dedicated, independent, and hardworking woman. As a child, I watched her constantly working to provide for our family. She gave me the strength and determination to strive for more, to keep chasing my dreams and make them a reality. My goal is to one day provide my children with the opportunities and resources I didn't have, while also teaching them the value of hard work. I want to ensure they understand the importance of earning what they desire, instilling in them the same determination and resilience that my mother instilled in me. In summary, success for me is about financial stability, improved living conditions, and the ability to support my family and community. This opportunity will help me achieve these goals and fulfill the promise I made to myself and my family.

I remember the days in elementary school, proudly singing the Pledge of Allegiance without fully understanding its significance. It wasn't until I learned its history that I truly grasped its importance. Today, I deeply appreciate the privilege of living freely and peacefully, thanks to those who have fought for these rights. Hello, my name is Yesenia Bermejo. I am twenty-two years old. Throughout my life, I have moved frequently and now reside in Colton, San Bernardino. I am majoring in Nursing and am dedicated to progressing in my educational journey. As I reflect on my life, it's amusing to see how much it has changed. Nursing was never my initial dream. I always wanted to pursue a career in automotive engineering, specifically working on military tanks. I was fascinated by their design and the immense power they possessed. This dream was inspired by my two brothers who served in the Army. One of them was a sergeant responsible for tanks, and the other was a bomb engineer. Although I don't know the exact names of their job titles, their careers sparked my aspiration to work with these incredible machines. Their dedication and passion influenced my own ambitions, even though I ultimately chose a different path in nursing. Growing up, I remember why my brothers enrolled in the military. We lived in a garage with my mother and five siblings, crowded as if we were in a small box. My mother took on the roles of both father and mother, struggling to provide for us. At the age of nine, I started working, helping my mother clean houses to pay the bills and avoid falling deeper into poverty. My older siblings also had to work young and couldn't pursue their educational goals. When they were of age, both my brothers stepped in to care for the family, enrolling in the Army to bring success and financial stability to our household. Their decision to join the military had a profound impact on my life. It wasn't just about the financial stability they provided; it was also about the values they instilled in me. Their sense of duty, sacrifice, and commitment to something greater than themselves influenced me deeply. I learned the importance of perseverance, hard work, and dedication to a cause. The military also had an indirect impact on my personal development. Watching my brothers serve and hearing their stories of discipline, teamwork, and resilience inspired me to adopt those qualities in my own life. It gave me a sense of pride and respect for the military, and it also made me more aware of the freedoms and opportunities we have as a result of their sacrifices. My journey into nursing, although different from my initial dream, is still rooted in the values I learned from my brothers. Nursing requires compassion, dedication, and a commitment to helping others—qualities that my brothers demonstrated through their service. My goal is to provide care and support to those in need, much like my brothers did in their roles. To this day, I am grateful to my brothers for sacrificing their educational opportunities so that I could explore mine. Their selflessness has had a profound impact on my life, shaping my values and driving my commitment to my own education and career. I hope to honor their sacrifices they has made by making a difference in the lives of others through my work in nursing, carrying forward the spirit of service and dedication they exemplified.

I will always recall the sound of sirens coming through my alley. One day, many cops surrounded my home. My siblings took me out of the house and told me not to watch, but I peeked. The police had taken my mother away. As a Hispanic family, my first thought was deportation. All I could think about was when I would see my mother again. Tears ran down my red cheeks as I called out “MAMA!” She looked at me as if it was going to be okay. My oldest sister became my guardian and helped me through the ups and downs, but I started to struggle in school. I couldn’t focus; all my attention was on my mother. My path began to turn, and I started to become a troublemaker. I didn’t care about my grades, what the teachers said, or my future goals. I never went home when I was supposed to right after school and was all about being bad. I was surrounded by students who did not care about me; all they wanted to do was dumb things. One day after school, I went home early and heard a voice that filled me with pure joy. My mother was home. As I ran towards her, my mind filled with flashbacks reminding me who I was and who taught me to be independent, dedicated, and responsible. I began to question myself, “What is my purpose?”My mother knew the troubles I’d been in and was disappointed in me. She put me in an after-school program to help me catch up on homework and get back on track. Years passed, and I learned many things I didn’t know I was capable of. Growing up, I never liked living in poverty, having to worry about food, healthcare, and missing out on childhood experiences. I wanted to be a helper, a positive life-changing person for others, someone who motivates and helps families struggling in poverty today. Growing up in such challenging circumstances took a toll on my mental health. The constant stress, fear, and instability left me feeling anxious and depressed. However, these experiences fueled my desire to improve mental health, both for myself and others. I sought therapy and counseling, which helped me process my experiences and build resilience. I learned the importance of mental health and how crucial it is to seek help when needed. I have volunteered throughout my community many times because I enjoy seeing the results of my efforts. I have also become an advocate for mental health awareness, sharing my story and encouraging others to seek help. This inspired my dream to become a registered nurse because not only will I be helping to nurse people back to health, but I am also giving them another chance to positively impact my community. Through my work, I hope to provide both physical and mental health support to those in need, helping to break the cycle of poverty and improve the overall well-being of my community.

The sounds of sirens never seem to escape my neighborhood, no matter where I move. Like a constant alarm, I'm always reminded of the dangers surrounding me, living in fear and avoiding the lonely streets I grew up on. My community has shown me life's harshest realities but also the many opportunities it can present. Witnessing the daily struggles of others, including my family and myself, has shaped me into someone who wants to bring respect and positive change to people's lives in my community. As a child, I moved frequently throughout California. I remember living in a crowded garage with my mother and five siblings, feeling like we were in a small box. My mother took on both parental roles, struggling to provide for us and striving to live in a better community. Despite growing up in poverty, my outlook on life remained positive. Our everyday dinner typically consisted of “frijoles con huevos” (beans and eggs), with rare variations. My family was my only community at the time. Eventually, we saved enough money to get our own home. Though old, it provided me a room and a reprieve from sleeping on the floor. The new neighborhood was isolating. Nearby, a park became a place of observation for me. I saw cliques of people playing handball and the surrounding school appeared uninviting, covered in graffiti. The first day of fourth grade revealed a disinterested environment among teachers and students, most of whom were Hispanic like me. This school, filled with students sharing similar struggles, reflected the poverty prevalent in my community. At nine, I started working, helping my mother clean houses to make ends meet. My older siblings also worked young, sacrificing their educational goals. Through these experiences, I learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and dedication. I longed to be free from financial struggles. Years passed, and the sounds of sirens continued to echo through my alley. One day, cops surrounded my home and took my mother away. As a Hispanic family, my immediate fear was deportation. My siblings shielded me, but I saw my mother being taken, her reassuring look promising it would be okay. My oldest sister became my guardian, but I struggled in school, unable to focus, worried about my mother. I began acting out, becoming a troublemaker and disregarding my future. But one day, returning home early, I heard my mother’s voice. Overwhelmed with joy, I ran to her, remembering the lessons she taught me about independence, dedication, and responsibility. She knew of my troubles and enrolled me in an after-school program to help me catch up. As I grew, I realized I wanted to help others, especially those in poverty. I began volunteering, inspired to make a difference. This passion led me to pursue a career as a registered nurse, where I could provide care and give others a chance to impact their communities positively. I aspire to overcome my community's limitations and positively impact it. My mission is to help younger generations express themselves and achieve their dreams. I look forward to contributing to my community and showing that no matter the struggles, success and positive change are possible.
