When I was young, I had a passion for bringing people together for art's sake. I was either writing plays for my classmates or writing short stories to read to the school. In 11th grade, I began working on my most meaningful project: Art For Culture(A4C). A4C is a free after-school art club for local elementary schoolers that teaches students how to do fun, therapeutic art projects.
My father died when my three siblings and I were young, and my mother raised us independently. Growing up, my family was tight on money, and programs like A4C were a luxury. My aim with A4C was to make a program that was more inclusive by eliminating any costs to any family who participated. I understand the importance of a strong community, and breaking down barriers for those like myself is an important step to building a diverse one.
Through this project, I learned that there are ways for me to serve my community and help kids from similar backgrounds as myself. A4C has been a fulfilling mission, and I plan to continue this in college. As an engineering student, I want to marry artistic and technical skills to create sustainable designs for a better environment. After taking STEM classes and participating in the Technology Student Association, I realized how much I enjoy design.
During the summer of 10th grade, I completed a summer architecture program. I made designs, took intro lessons to architecture, and learned from professors and active architects. What I enjoyed the most about the experience was the collaborative aspect. Learning from others and having multiple perspectives excited me to someday work in a creative profession with teams of people with interesting ideas.
Looking ahead, I am excited about merging my passion for art, design, and community service in my college journey. By integrating my engineering education with my artistic inclinations, I hope to develop innovative solutions that not only address environmental challenges but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. Just as A4C has shown me the profound impact of inclusivity and creative engagement, I aspire to contribute to projects that foster collaboration and generate positive change on a larger scale.
As I move forward, I am determined to continue advocating for accessible opportunities in education and the arts, breaking down financial barriers, and inspiring young minds to embrace creativity and innovation. Through my own experiences, I understand the transformative power of empathy, shared experiences, and the ability to provide platforms for growth. By nurturing this ethos in my future endeavors, I aim to create a ripple effect that amplifies the importance of community, inclusivity, and the pursuit of meaningful change.
