on assessments while my peers were not. The truth made me utterly miserable: I was placed in
the lowest difficulty classes in my school due purely to my academic incompetence.
Realizing the complete mess I was, my only hope was to turn my humiliation into focus and
dedication. “This won't be easy,” I remember thinking. “But it is my only hope.” With my
newfound determination to improve my academic performance, I started reading chapters from
my science textbook and immediately noticed an increase in my test scores. Over the few
weeks, I became more active during class discussions, which helped me write essays at a much
faster pace. After implementing a daily schedule into my work routine, my productivity and
efficiency skyrocketed like never before.
With my priorities set on academic excellence with laser-like focus, my determination continues
to drive my ambitions today. As I practice competitive math every day, participate in numerous

The words made my head spin. It was devastating. My mind shuddered as I gazed at the paper in
front of me.
I was participating in an activity in my 9th-grade health class, where every student was given a
blank paper, and all the other students anonymously wrote what they thought of each other. As I
internalized what was written on my sheet, it stung. I sat there reading the responses over and
over again until the bell rang and I exited the classroom, consumed by grief.
Walking into the hallway, I pondered about the time in Kindergarten when I threw a staple into
the cage containing the class pet - baby chicks - after mistakenly thinking that a staple was
edible. When I glanced at a vacant room near the isolated stairwell, I remembered how I was the
last person to be chosen on almost every sports team or group project in primary school.
Engulfed by my thoughts, I could vaguely hear the chatter in a nearby classroom, which
reminded me of the incessant pointless questions I asked in every discussion in every middle
school English class. As I arrived at my next class, the magnitude of what I had just learned sunk deep into my heart. As far as everyone in my world was concerned, I was just a very annoying person, with nothing valuable to offer to my

I was dedicated to suppress my irritating demeanor. Over the next week, I wanted to peer over
what other groups were doing during my History class, but I managed to successfully hold back
that desire. By the end of the month, I had experienced many urges to ask something unnecessary
in my English lectures for comic relief, but I decided to keep myself quiet. Through the course of
the year, I always felt the desire to complain about my life, but I tenaciously prevented that from
happening. My ultimate goal was stuck in my head: “I need to stop being annoying.” Each
decision I made to mitigate my unlikable reputation was, in fact, a payoff; slowly but surely, I
was giving myself another chance to become an amiable and enjoyable person.
The journey was difficult, but the outcomes spoke for themselves. As the years passed, I was
able to make new friendships when I thought friendships could never be made. For instance, I

The next summer, while wandering through my neighborhood and observing the grass forming the greenery below me, and the insects that thrived amongst the grass, I was struck by intense wonder once more. How could such a diverse array of organisms be made from the same primitive unit? Embracing the mystery, I encountered the secret of biology: the cells interacted in different ways to form different tissues, these tissues worked with each other to form an organism, and each organism had its own role in the ecosystem that surrounded me. I would love to be part of such projects, as I can discover more of the amazing emergent properties that make up our world with equally driven students - while spreading this passion to my learning community at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.

The summer is full of invaluable experiences and unforgettable enjoyment. However, the summer is also a time when many students lose touch of what they learn during the school year.
For 4 years, I was part of Kannada Kali, an organization that helps students learn the Indian cultural language of Kannada. But during the start of every year, almost every student does not remember the concepts taught in previous years. This was extremely detrimental to the course syllabus since old concepts had to keep getting reincorporated, delaying the teaching process.
It was time to make a change. It was time to make sure that the students kept in touch with the material. Becoming a student volunteer, I started to assist the teacher in organizing material for weekly classes. Every week during the year, I listed important vocabulary words and helped make a lesson plan. I made sure that the lessons were organized and enjoyable so that the students would retain the information better in the summer.
As the summer started, I was part of a growing group of volunteers dedicated to ensuring that students retained the information. Every day, I spent around an hour going over stories and helping students translate them. I also taught other cultural areas like Vedic Math. The organization's influence grew as more people joined and enjoyed the sessions. And by the start of the subsequent year, almost all the kids remembered what they had learned.

I am astonished by the extent of progress that it allowed the human race to achieve - from decoding the entire human genome to advancing fingerprint identification.
This technique is none other than Gel Electrophoresis.
I am inspired by technology that applies concepts from different fields because they exemplify the interconnectedness of science when attempting to resolve real-world issues. By ingeniously integrating the principles of biochemistry and electrostatics, Gel Electrophoresis separates DNA molecules by size, revealing information vital to forensic, legal, and biochemical comparisons.
I am inspired by the variety of uses for this technology. Without Electrophoresis, COVID testing would be impossible. Without Electrophoresis, we would still be living in a world with a justice system relying entirely on testimony and questionable evidence. Without Electrophoresis, the advent of medicine would be precluded rendering our life expectancy much lower than it is today.
Most importantly, the ingenuity involved in the discovery of Electrophoresis inspires me to learn whatever I can, regardless of the scientific field. When I was young, my parents introduced me to the competition that overshadows the academic world. They warned about how important it is to my future, and how much effort and stress goes into overcoming it. My immature mind, not understanding these warnings from my parents, became unaware of the academic and social expectations of the world outside my home.
I attended school every day. Being in primary school, I was lax, mostly oblivious to my academics and my future. I confined myself to my own thoughts and interests, isolating myself from the opportunities provided by the world around me. In essence, I was indifferent to the competition that my parents had introduced to me, which made me unaware of my academic performance and inflexible to learning new concepts and adopting new habits.
During my 6th grade orientation, I was introduced to the class schedule - a table dictating which classes I was to attend on a daily basis. I noticed that my classes were labeled with a "2" and, out of curiosity, I compared schedules and questioned others about what the "2" meant. After collecting a couple of responses, the truth was clear and the revelation struck me with brutality. In a building teeming with inquisitive and ambitious minds, the "2" meant to me that I failed to work up to my true potential to attain academic success. Having been washed over by my own incognizance, I realized that I was stuck in the imprisoning riverbed of a river that leads to the ocean of success and self-fulfillment - a river that was the byproduct of the pitiless competition.
Being placed in classes that did not meet my academic desires, I made it my objective to escape the riverbed. I started to spend my days self-learning advanced math concepts and applying the material into my everyday life. I replaced my time watching movies with time spent viewing science tutorials so that I could excel in my STEM courses. When I glanced at a vacant room near the isolated stairwell, I remembered how I was the last person to be chosen on almost every sports team or group project in primary school. Engulfed by my thoughts, I could vaguely hear the chatter in a nearby classroom, which reminded me of the incessant pointless questions I asked in every discussion in every middle school English class that I ever took. As I arrived at the next class on my schedule, the magnitude of what I had just learned sunk deep into my heart. As far as everyone in my world was concerned, I was just a very annoying person, with nothing valuable to offer to my community.
Reeling from the weight of this news, I decided that it was time to change my personality. As my shame and misery turned into determination, the events of that day had marked the beginning of my personal revolution.
I was dedicated to suppress my irritating demeanor. Over the next week, I wanted to peer over what other groups were doing during my History class, but I managed to successfully hold back that desire. By the end of the month, I had experienced many urges to ask something unnecessary in my English lectures for comic relief, but I decided to keep myself quiet. Through the course of the year, I always felt the desire to complain about my life, but I tenaciously prevented that from happening. My ultimate goal was stuck in my head: “I need to stop being annoying.” Each decision I made to mitigate my unlikable reputation was, in fact, a payoff; slowly but surely, I was giving myself another chance to become an amiable and enjoyable person.
The journey was difficult, but the outcomes spoke for themselves. As the years passed, I was able to make new friendships when I thought friendships could never be made. For instance, I befriended the student who sat in front of me in my Spanish class, who had originally hated my irritating personality. Pursuing my passion for science, I immersed myself in competitive science clubs and let my work ethic and passion speak for themselves, building new relationships along the way. Every day, I made sure to show conscientiousness to everyone around me by always wearing a smile on my face. By the end of my junior year, my transformation had helped me gain an appreciation for others’ emotions and opinions while being perceived as a more likable and admirable person myself.
Today, I am empowered by my ability to improve my behavior from every experience that forces me to socialize. Perhaps, if my health teacher never assigned the activity that pretty much ruined my day, I would still be the annoying kid that I was four years ago.
Well, the activity may just have been the best thing I ever participated in.
