Bio

My life goal now is to work towards becoming a CEO or COO of a hospital system. As a critical care paramedic, I have been on the front lines in healthcare along with nurses and doctors. I see the struggles they have on a daily basis with an unyielding passion to save lives, ease suffering, and help heal others. I want to take that same passion and help the nurses and doctors care for patients with the support of an administrator that understands what it means to care for a patient. To do this, it takes vision combined with the understanding that comes from actually taking care of people. In the words of Richard Branson "Take care of your employees and they'll take care of your business". I believe that when your doctors and nurses have everything that makes it easy to properly and safely take care of patients. Everything else will follow.

My name is William Roberts. I am a firefighter / paramedic and critical care paramedic here in Houston, TX. I have been in emergency services going on 16 years now. Having been in many life or death situations, I am no stranger to having to make difficult decisions under the worst of conditions. In February of 2020. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic / outbreak. I watched as emergency rooms became packed with people. It was a never ending onslaught for the doctors and nurses at the ER's. Hours and even days would go by with people in the lobby still waiting to be seen. You could see it on the doctors and nurses faces that they were exhausted. It didn't of course stop at the lobby. You also had ambulances coming in as well. In all of this, I noticed a few things. First, hospital triage was running as if nothing, including the pandemic had ever happened. With the same procedures that created many chokepoints in the ER. Second, very few from leadership were there to help solve problems. This is where is gets scary. They were holding ambulance crews in the ER for up to 8 hours at a time. That is 8 hours that an ambulance cannot respond to an emergency which put the community at risk. The nurses and doctors did exactly what they were trained to do, and that is take care of the patient(s). As a paramedic, when you see someone in trouble you have to intervene and intervene decisively by supporting your team. By support those charged under your care with action. This is why I have chosen a degree in Business Administration with emphasis in healthcare. I hope to use the critical thinking skills that I have used to save countless lives as a paramedic. To help support those on the front lines. From this, I hope to help change healthcare for the better. Improving patient flows through the emergency department through innovations in triage, Pt holding following admission decision, and how to best confront mental health holds without reducing life-saving efficiency. By learning, listening, and implementing strategies to streamline processes from people on the front lines. I hope to improve job satisfaction and reduce burnout. The difference between me and any other corporate leader is that I know what it means to have touched a patient. To have treated a patient. To have seen the good, bad, and the ugly of medicine on a personal level. While many corporate leaders stake only loyalty in the shareholders. I stake my loyalties in both the shareholder, as well as the people I serve. This will provide me the ability to connect with doctors and nurses in ways that could only make medicine better for the patients we serve. Sir Richard Bronson said it best. " Take care of your employees, and they will take care of your business".
