Being a parent is a journey of growth, resilience, and self-discovery. My son Donta, who was diagnosed with Autism last year, has been a profound source of inspiration for me, driving my commitment to self-improvement and determination. His unique perspective on life and the challenges he faces have fueled my passion for creating a nurturing and empowering environment for him and for myself. By striving to be a better version of myself each day, I hope to paint a good example for Donta and show him the power of perseverance and love. My journey towards self-improvement began long before Donta’s diagnosis, but it has taken on a new sense of urgency and purpose since then. As a first-generation college student, I am currently working toward completing my Master of Arts in Entrepreneurship at Columbia College Chicago. Balancing my roles as a student, a professional, and a mother requires immense determination and resilience. I work at the Chicago Public Library as a Children's Library Associate, where I help kids and families connect with literature, programs, and resources. This role not only allows me to support my community but also teaches Donta the value of giving back and the importance of education. Through my work with the non-profit organization Nerdy Media, I have dedicated myself to empowering Chicago's youth, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. By mentoring and guiding young people, I aim to create opportunities for them to succeed and thrive, just as I strive to do for Donta. This professional experience has reinforced the values of empathy, dedication, and hard work, which I hope to instill in my son. Donta’s diagnosis has been a pivotal moment in my life, teaching me the importance of adaptability and the power of advocacy. Navigating the complexities of Autism requires patience, understanding, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. I have become an advocate for Donta, learning about Autism, seeking the best therapies, and ensuring he has the support he needs to flourish. This journey has underscored the importance of resilience and the continuous pursuit of self-improvement. It is my hope that by demonstrating these qualities, I can teach Donta to face his own challenges with courage and determination. In addition to my academic and professional endeavors, I am also deeply committed to giving back to my community through volunteer work. Whether it’s participating in local shelter initiatives, mentoring programs, or environmental conservation projects, I aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. This commitment to service is something I hope Donta will carry forward in his own life, understanding that we all have a role to play in making the world a better place. Through my actions, I strive to show Donta that challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for growth. My journey of self-improvement and determination is a testament to the belief that with hard work, perseverance, and a supportive community, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve our dreams. By painting this example, I hope to empower Donta to embrace his uniqueness, pursue his passions, and become a compassionate and resilient individual. In conclusion, my experiences as a mother, student, professional, and community advocate all converge to set a positive example for my son Donta. Through self-improvement and determination, I aim to demonstrate the power of resilience and the importance of giving back. Together, we are learning to navigate the world with hope, courage, and a commitment to making a difference.

    Norton Scholarship
The concept of "my truth" can be understood as a personal interpretation or understanding of reality. This idea suggests that truth is relative and subjective, depending on individual experiences and beliefs. However, from a biblical standpoint, especially as viewed by Jehovah's Witnesses, there is a clear distinction between human understanding ("my truth") and the ultimate, unchanging truth from God as revealed in the Bible. As Jehovah's Witnesses we believe that truth comes from Jehovah God and is conveyed through the Bible, his inspired Word. Therefore, they uphold the idea that the Bible provides a consistent and objective standard of truth that does not change based on individual or cultural perceptions. A key scripture that reflects this view is John 17:17, where Jesus says, "Sanctify them by means of the truth; your word is truth." This indicates that God's word, the Bible, is the source of truth, setting it apart from subjective interpretations. Another relevant passage is 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which states, "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." This scripture underscores that the Bible is not merely a collection of human opinions but is inspired by God and serves as a reliable guide for truth and righteous living. Jehovah's Witnesses also look to the example of Jesus Christ, who said in John 14:6, "I am the way and the truth and the life." This implies that truth is found in Jesus' teachings and example, and ultimately, in following him. Furthermore, Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs: "Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, and do not lean upon your own understanding. In all your ways, take notice of him, and he will make your paths straight." This emphasizes the importance of seeking God's guidance rather than relying solely on one's own perspective. In summary, from a Jehovah's Witness perspective, the concept of "my truth" could lead to confusion and inconsistency, as it is based on personal opinions and interpretations. In contrast, God's truth, as revealed in the Bible, is consistent, reliable, and provides a solid foundation for faith and conduct. Witnesses refer to all their beliefs collectively as "the Truth". Witnesses commonly call their body of beliefs "The Truth" and consider themselves to be "in the Truth", they consider human society morally corrupt and under the influence of Satan, the devil. Jehovah's Witnesses encourage individuals to align their beliefs and practices with the biblical truth, rather than relying on their own subjective ideas in which I have grown to appreciate and live by.

I believe that making a positive impact on the world begins with understanding one's unique strengths and experiences, and using them to contribute to the well-being of others. My journey has been defined by resilience, learning, and a deep desire to help those who face adversity. I aim to use my experiences and education to create meaningful change in the world, particularly for young people in foster care and underserved communities. I grew up in foster care, moving through several placements, including group homes. This challenging upbringing taught me the value of education, resilience, and the importance of having mentors and supportive adults in one's life. Despite the instability of foster care, I became the first in my family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor's degree from Columbia College in 2020 and now a soon upcoming graduate with my Master of Arts in Business and entrepreneurship. This achievement was not just a personal triumph—it was a victory for everyone who believed in me and supported me through my journey. Currently, I work as a Library Associate for the City of Chicago. This position allows me to interact with a diverse community and teach valuable skills through multimedia-based educational workshops. I specialize in teaching skills like acting, video production, and podcasting, empowering people to share their stories and connect with others. Through this work, I've seen how storytelling can bridge gaps and foster understanding among people from different backgrounds. In addition to my work at the library, I co-direct a nonprofit organization called Nerdy Media. Our goal is to provide a safe space for youth with "nerdy" interests to develop 21st-century skills while building confidence and finding a supportive community. I volunteer regularly in my community, participating in coat drives and distributing food to unhoused individuals. These experiences have deepened my commitment to making a difference in the lives of those who often go unseen. As a mother to a young son, I understand the importance of setting a positive example and nurturing the next generation. I want to show him and others that no matter your background, you can achieve great things with determination, support, and a focus on making a positive impact. My goal is to continue my education and pursue a Master's degree in Library Applied Science or Information Science. This advanced education will equip me to create and lead innovative programs that empower others to learn, grow, and succeed. I plan to use my platform to advocate for foster youth and underserved communities. I aim to develop programs that offer mentorship, educational support, and skill-building opportunities to young people. I envision a world where everyone, regardless of their background, has access to resources that can help them realize their potential. In summary, my journey from foster care to college graduate, my work at the library, and my leadership in Nerdy Media all reflect my commitment to making a positive impact on the world. I am dedicated to using my skills and experiences to uplift others and create a more equitable and compassionate society. This scholarship would be a critical step toward achieving my goals and expanding my reach to help more people in need.
    Black Leaders Scholarship
Among the countless individuals who have made an indelible mark on society, one figure stands out as a beacon of resilience, courage, and leadership. In honor of Black History Month, I would like to pay tribute to the inspiring legacy of Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman, born into slavery in Maryland in the early 1820s, defied the oppressive forces of slavery to become one of the most prominent figures in the abolitionist movement. At the age of 27, Harriet Tubman made the courageous decision to escape from slavery, embarking on a perilous journey to freedom. Risking her life, Tubman traveled nearly 100 miles to reach the free state of Pennsylvania, where she found refuge and began her mission to help others escape the bonds of slavery. As a 27-year-old Black woman, I draw inspiration from Harriet Tubman's courageous decision to embark on a perilous journey to freedom. At the same age as Tubman when she made her escape, I am reminded of the bravery and resilience required to defy oppression and pursue a path of liberation. Like Tubman, I aspire to embody these same values of courage, determination, and compassion as I navigate my own journey. Despite the immense risks and dangers she faced along the way, Tubman remained steadfast in her resolve to seek freedom and forge a better future for herself and others. This selfless dedication to the well-being and liberation of others exemplifies the true essence of leadership and service. Similarly, I am committed to leveraging my own journey and experiences to uplift and empower my community. Through entrepreneurship and business innovation, I aim to create opportunities for economic advancement, social impact, and collective liberation. Just as Tubman dedicated her life to the pursuit of freedom and justice, I am driven by a deep sense of purpose to build a business that serves and uplifts our people, embodying the same values of courage, resilience, and compassion that defined Harriet Tubman's legacy. Harriet Tubman's commitment to freedom extended beyond her own liberation. Dubbed the "Moses of her people," Tubman became a fearless conductor of the Underground Railroad, leading hundreds of enslaved individuals to freedom along the treacherous route to the North. Despite the constant threat of capture and violence, Tubman navigated danger and guided her passengers to safety under the cover of darkness. In addition to Harriet Tubman was a passionate advocate for justice and equality. She actively supported the abolitionist movement, speaking out against the horrors of slavery and tirelessly lobbying for the emancipation of enslaved individuals. Tubman's unwavering commitment to freedom and her dedication to the cause of social justice continue to inspire activists and advocates around the world. Tubman's legacy of courage, resilience, and leadership serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom and equality. Her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to justice continue to resonate with people of all backgrounds, inspiring countless individuals to stand up against oppression and work towards a more just and equitable society. Harriet Tubman's life and legacy epitomize the resilience, courage, and leadership of Black leaders who have shaped history and inspired generations. Her extraordinary journey from slavery to freedom, her selfless dedication to helping others escape bondage, and her relentless advocacy for justice and equality serve as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring quest for freedom. As we commemorate Black History Month, let us honor the inspiring legacy of Harriet Tubman and celebrate the countless contributions of Black leaders who have transformed our world for the better.

Growing up as a working-class African American woman, I encountered numerous challenges that shaped my journey and resilience. One significant adversity I faced was balancing the demands of parenthood while pursuing my education and entrepreneurial aspirations. As a single mother and graduate student, I experienced the constant struggle of juggling responsibilities, managing finances, and striving to create a better future for my family. The challenges I encountered were multifaceted, requiring me to navigate through the complexities of parenthood, education, and entrepreneurship simultaneously. Balancing academic assignments, parenting responsibilities, and financial constraints often felt overwhelming, leaving me feeling stretched thin and uncertain about the future. Despite the obstacles, I persevered by leveraging my determination, resourcefulness, and support network. I embraced the mindset of resilience, recognizing that setbacks are temporary and opportunities for growth and learning. Through diligent time management, seeking assistance from mentors and peers, and maintaining a positive outlook, I navigated through adversity with resilience and determination. This adversity profoundly shaped me, instilling within me a sense of grit, empathy, and gratitude. It taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and self-belief in overcoming challenges and achieving success. I learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to appreciate the strength and resilience that adversity cultivates within us. To someone facing similar circumstances, I would offer the following advice. Embrace resilience: Cultivate a resilient mindset and recognize that setbacks are temporary obstacles on the path to success. Believe in your ability to overcome challenges and persevere through adversity. Seek support: Don't be afraid to reach out for help and support from friends, family, mentors, and community resources. Surround yourself with a supportive network that can offer guidance, encouragement, and assistance when needed. Practice self-care: Prioritize self-care and well-being amidst the demands of daily life. Take time to recharge, rest, and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Remember that self-care is not selfish but essential for resilience and long-term success. Maintain perspective: Keep things in perspective and focus on the bigger picture. Remind yourself of your strengths, accomplishments, and the progress you've made despite challenges. Stay optimistic and resilient in the face of adversity, knowing that every setback is an opportunity for growth and learning. By embracing resilience, seeking support, prioritizing self-care, and maintaining perspective, individuals can navigate through adversity with strength, grace, and perseverance, ultimately emerging stronger and more resilient than before. Adversity may test us, but it also provides opportunities for growth, resilience, and personal development.
