Bio

Hello, I’m Willow Grace, a Native American woman and former U.S. Army medic. After years of service on the front lines, I’m now shifting my dedication toward animals—a calling shaped by my childhood love for creatures and my lifelong drive to protect them. The outdoors has always been my refuge, where I find strength and grounding—whether hiking, rafting, or simply being immersed in nature. At home, my three golden retrievers and a small hermit crab remind me daily of the loyalty, resilience, and joy animals bring into our lives. I am deeply committed to service, and whether in the Army or as a future veterinarian, my mission is to heal and protect. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue my journey, empowering me to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves and create a compassionate world where all creatures are treated with respect. Thank you for considering my journey.

    Team USA Fan Scholarship
My admiration for Team USA goes far beyond medals and world records; it’s rooted in the courage and resilience of athletes like Simone Biles. As a veteran and someone who has faced my own battles with mental health, I see in Simone a hero who represents not only strength but also vulnerability—a quality often overlooked in elite sports but one that is deeply important. Her journey on the world stage, her triumphs and trials alike, resonate with me and inspire me to keep pushing forward in my own life. Simone Biles is a powerful force in gymnastics, breaking records and redefining what’s possible in her sport. Yet, her decision to step back during the Tokyo Olympics to protect her mental health was perhaps her most extraordinary act of bravery. In that moment, she showed the world that even the strongest among us need support and time to heal. Her willingness to prioritize her mental well-being, despite the immense pressure and expectations from millions, gave voice to those of us who struggle silently with similar challenges. For me, Simone’s choice was a reminder that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a profound act of self-respect and courage. In the military, mental health often gets pushed aside, especially when facing the demands of service. Like Simone, I’ve grappled with balancing expectations, performance, and inner battles that can’t always be seen from the outside. Her public stand reminded me that even in moments when stepping back feels daunting, it’s essential for our well-being and longevity. Beyond her bravery, Simone’s persistence and commitment to her sport and to young athletes everywhere make her an extraordinary role model. Despite facing harsh criticism, she continues to advocate for herself and for others in gymnastics, especially young women of color who look up to her. Her accomplishments, from her astonishing routines to her advocacy for mental health, exemplify resilience, grit, and unwavering strength. When I watch Simone perform, I see not only her immense physical power but the courage she embodies as a person. She inspires me to continue being an advocate for mental health, especially within the military community, where stigma often keeps people from speaking out. As a fan of Team USA, it’s Simone’s heart and bravery that I cheer for—qualities that transcend sports and inspire people like me, who find strength in her journey and courage in her example.
    Student Referee Scholarship
My journey as a soccer referee has been nothing short of transformative. Growing up, I’d always been drawn to sports, particularly soccer, as it combined strategy with the exhilaration of being part of a team. But becoming a referee took my love for the game to a new level, challenging me in ways I hadn’t anticipated and helping me grow into a more decisive and confident person. One of my favorite memories of refereeing came during a high-stakes championship game for a local youth league. The teams were tied, and both players and spectators were on edge. As the minutes ticked down, the intensity escalated. In the final few moments, a questionable foul was called, and all eyes turned to me. The players, coaches, and crowd waited for my decision, and I felt the pressure mount. After a deep breath, I made the call, signaling a free kick. There was a lot of grumbling and dissent, but I stuck by my decision. Later, some spectators even approached to voice their opinions, but that moment solidified an important lesson for me: refereeing requires resilience, focus, and the confidence to stand by your judgment, even when it isn’t the popular choice. Knowing that I’d made the right call for the integrity of the game was empowering. That game taught me how to stay composed under pressure and handle criticism gracefully—skills that have served me well both on and off the field. Being a referee has strengthened my character in many ways. I’ve learned to appreciate the value of teamwork, even from a referee’s unique perspective. Instead of being part of a single team, I’m part of every game I officiate, dedicated to ensuring fair play for all. This responsibility has taught me to be impartial, to respect every player’s effort, and to focus on creating a positive experience for everyone involved. Officiating has also taught me the value of preparation. From reviewing the rules to staying fit enough to keep up with the pace of a competitive match, refereeing has shown me that thorough preparation builds both confidence and success. As I look to the future, I’m eager to continue my journey in refereeing. My goal is to officiate higher-level matches, perhaps even reaching national or international leagues someday. I’m particularly inspired by the idea of mentoring younger referees, helping them navigate the challenges of the role while emphasizing fairness and integrity. I want to be someone who not only enforces the rules but also fosters respect for the game and the people who play it. In the meantime, I plan to keep improving my skills, learning from each game, and embracing every opportunity to grow. Soccer has given me so much over the years, and as a referee, I feel like I’m giving back to the sport that has shaped me. I am committed to making a positive impact on every game I officiate, knowing that my efforts contribute to a culture of respect, fairness, and sportsmanship. Refereeing has taught me so much about accountability, patience, and leadership, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.
    Billy Downey Memorial Agriculture Scholarship
Agriculture is often referred to as the backbone of our society, and for good reason. It sustains us, nourishes us, and connects us to the land and the animals that share it with us. Growing up, I was surrounded by animals and agriculture—an experience that shaped not only my childhood but also the dreams I carry into my future. While my current path is aimed at becoming a veterinarian, it is the agricultural roots I’ve come from and the deep respect I have for farming and animal husbandry that truly motivate me to make a difference in my community. My love for animals has always been at the core of my existence. As a child, I spent countless hours with neighbors’ animals, and later, I found solace in volunteering at animal shelters and wildlife rehabilitation programs. But it wasn’t until I began reflecting on the role agriculture plays in the lives of so many that I realized my dream could extend beyond veterinary medicine alone. I want to work with animals not only in clinics but on farms, helping communities maintain healthy livestock and crops. The power of agriculture in a community is immeasurable. It is the foundation of food security, economic sustainability, and cultural preservation. Agriculture creates jobs, supports local economies, and provides nourishment not just for individuals but for entire regions. By maintaining healthy farms, we ensure healthy communities. Through proper animal care, farm management, and sustainable practices, we can preserve the natural environment and reduce the strain on our ecosystem. I believe that, with my future degree, I can make an impact in this way—by ensuring that animals are cared for properly and that farming practices are sustainable for future generations. While my specific goal is to become a veterinarian, I am determined to continue my connection with agriculture through farming. Owning and maintaining my own farm will allow me to implement my veterinary knowledge to care for my animals, as well as serve my community by offering guidance to local farmers. I want to support farmers by helping them maintain healthy livestock, manage animal diseases, and introduce sustainable agricultural practices that will enable them to be self-sufficient in an increasingly challenging world. In doing so, I can help foster a thriving, healthy community—one where agriculture is not only appreciated but cherished for its ability to unite people and the environment. Volunteering has played an important role in my journey thus far. Whether I was working with animals at a shelter or helping at local food banks, I’ve always believed in giving back to my community. I understand that agriculture isn’t just about working with crops and animals—it’s about ensuring that those who rely on agriculture for their livelihood can thrive. I have seen firsthand how much agriculture affects the lives of individuals, families, and entire communities. This scholarship will allow me to further my education in agriculture, giving me the tools I need to make a lasting impact. I want to ensure that agriculture becomes more accessible to future generations, especially in underrepresented communities. My journey toward becoming a veterinarian is just the beginning. I envision a future where I not only help individual animals but contribute to the health of entire communities through sustainable farming practices. I know that with the right education and opportunities, I can make a difference. Agriculture will always be more than just a career for me—it’s a way to serve, protect, and enrich the lives of others, and I am ready to answer that call.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music has been a powerful source of comfort and inspiration throughout my life, especially during challenging times. As I navigate my journey toward becoming a veterinarian, her songs resonate deeply and reflect my experiences of overcoming adversity. One of my favorite tracks is “Ocean Eyes,” which struck a chord with me from the moment I heard it. The haunting melody and themes of vulnerability and longing mirror my own experiences with mental health struggles. Growing up in a tumultuous environment, I faced the emotional scars left by my father’s alcoholism and eventual incarceration. The gentle yet poignant nature of “Ocean Eyes” reminds me that it’s okay to feel deeply and embrace my emotions rather than hide them. This acceptance has been crucial in my healing process as I work toward overcoming my battles with PTSD and anxiety. Another song that resonates profoundly is “When the Party’s Over.” Its raw honesty about heartbreak and loneliness reflects my feelings after losing my husband, a U.S. Special Operations Staff Sergeant, to cancer. The song captures the desire for solitude while yearning for connection, embodying the sense of grief and isolation I felt during that time. Billie’s ability to express such complex emotions has helped me process my feelings and has been a reminder that I am not alone in my struggles. This connection encourages me to channel my pain into my passion for veterinary medicine and mental health advocacy, giving me a sense of purpose amid the sorrow. Lastly, “Happier Than Ever” stands out for its powerful narrative of self-discovery and empowerment. The transition from a soft melody to a powerful anthem mirrors my own journey of resilience. After facing many adversities, including my tumultuous childhood and the challenges of military service, I have learned the importance of standing strong in my beliefs and pursuing my dreams. This song inspires me to embrace my ambitions, particularly in my goal to establish a non-profit animal sanctuary to support veterans and individuals struggling with mental health. Billie’s message of self-empowerment serves as a motivating force in my life. In conclusion, Billie Eilish’s music has significantly impacted me, providing solace and inspiration as I navigate personal and academic challenges. Her songs empower me to embrace my emotions, seek healing, and strive for my dreams despite the adversities I have faced. This scholarship would not only support my education but also allow me to continue channeling my experiences into a positive force for others, just as Billie has done through her music.
José Ventura and Margarita Melendez Mexican-American Scholarship Fund
I am honored to apply for the José Melendez Memorial Scholarship, which not only honors the memory of a remarkable individual but also supports first-generation, Mexican-American students like myself in pursuing higher education. José Melendez's legacy of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to education deeply resonates with me, as I too have faced similar challenges and triumphs on my journey as a college-goer. Growing up in a bustling household with limited financial resources, I witnessed the sacrifices and hard work my parents, particularly my father, made to provide for our family. Like José Melendez, my father worked tirelessly to ensure that my siblings and I had access to opportunities he never had. His unwavering support and belief in the power of education inspired me to dream big and strive for excellence in all aspects of my life. Despite the financial constraints and the absence of regular veterinary care for our animals, I was determined to pursue my passion for veterinary medicine. My father's example taught me the value of resilience and perseverance, qualities that have been instrumental in overcoming the obstacles I have encountered on my educational path. As a first-generation college student, I have faced numerous challenges, from navigating the college application process to balancing work and academic responsibilities. However, each challenge has only fueled my determination to succeed and make the most of the opportunities afforded to me. José Melendez's commitment to his children's education serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for me. His belief in the transformative power of education to break barriers and create a better future for oneself and one's community resonates deeply with my own aspirations and goals. If awarded this scholarship, I would use it to further my education and pursue my dream of becoming a veterinarian. I am passionate about making a positive impact in the field of veterinary medicine and contributing to the well-being of animals and communities alike. In addition, I am committed to paying forward the support and encouragement I have received by serving as a mentor and role model for other first-generation students. I believe that by sharing my experiences and offering guidance and support, I can empower others to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles on their educational journey. In conclusion, José Melendez's legacy serves as a reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
