My life goals are to be a criminal defense attorney and become the first lawyer in my family. I am driven and have played the drums for most of my life. Along with those things I enjoy reading and tutoring my fellow students and heading church fundraisers at my church Bethel French SDA Orlando.

I remember just how much of my childhood was spent standing in the dark, narrow waiting room at that local legal aid office, my hand grasping Mom's very tightly. The air was heavy with the smell of old paper and hushed murmurs of conversation that spoke volumes of unspoken tension. Mom had just left an abusive relationship, and we were there to seek help in getting a restraining order. I was just ten years old then, but that burden of her fear and uncertainty seemed to be an overwhelmingly heavy blanket on my small shoulders.
I remember the day we sat with the attorney; he spoke with him in a manner that made my mom feel her concerns were being taken into consideration and left them feeling better. It made me proud to see her go from being a timid woman to one who could finally stand up for her rights. That was perhaps the first time I appreciated the power of the law and a strong advocate. I knew that day I wanted to be that kind of person, helping others like my mom find their voice.
Fast track to high school, the debate club changed my life. It would be where I fell in love with the art of building arguments and voicing justice, finding my passion for law. This was definitely not without its challenges. Financial strains within the family called for me to find part-time jobs. I remember late nights studying at the kitchen table while my younger siblings, oblivious to the weight of our circumstances, played in the same room. All these experiences served only to whet my appetite to empower the vulnerable, and as I turn this new chapter, the urge has become avid-to acquire knowledge and translate it into action.
These various difficulties did not deter me. I graduated as top 5 in my class, not only for myself but also for my mother, who had sacrificed so much that I might have an education. Her strength in life was what allowed me to face every one of life's obstacles. My experiences in life were maturing me into a person of compassion who could understand people facing their struggles through the legal system.
After high school, I joined a nonprofit organization that served domestic violence survivors. Daily, I confronted women with strong characters struggling to live like my mother. Among all the stories that struck a chord in my brain was that of Maria: the mother of three children who had fled her abusive partner. Talking about her struggles, I not only listened but felt a pang of pain quite unlike any other, yet instilled a sense of hope. Working with her to obtain the legal protections she needed, was less than inspiring to see her get stronger.
In conclusion, my journey has been a testimony to the indomitable human spirit and the transforming power of advocacy. Every challenge I had to meet, from my mother's struggle for safety to my very own education and work, only deepened my commitment to the law.
Empowering the vulnerable requires a lot of power and support, and I aspire to be one such person. I move into a new chapter with lessons learned from the past. I'm excited, and looking forward with acquired knowledge ready to translate into action. I have every faith that through the law, not only will I stand for what is just, but I can also bring hope where it is needed most.
