Healing Self and Community Scholarship
I have found through my studies, time and time again, that the act of self-expression through creation in music and the arts helps the individual to find their personal identity and express whatever may be the root cause of their difficulties. As a person of color that has suffered from issues with depression and the further tragedies that it may cause I have found significant solace in both the creation and consumption of art, especially art which may be relevant to me and my situation. I have always believed that everyone has a story that deserves to be told, but through this period of comfort and the search to be seen I have found positive representation for minority groups such as the LGBTQ+ and South Asians to be lacking in media created not only in the US but globally. For as long as humanity has existed we have shared stories of community, lessons on accepting difficulties such as death, stress, and the journey to find yourself, and the stories about what makes each of us unique as human beings. I would love nothing more than to share the stories of myself, as a member of both the South Asian and LGBTQ+ communities, and the people I love, as I know that someone somewhere is looking for a creation from someone who understands them and nothing would make me more fulfilled than working towards being that person.
VNutrition & Wellness’ Annual LGBTQ+ Vitality Scholarship
I plan on continuing with my previous experience of creating education plans (I was in a managerial position and additionally created some of the lecture plans for the Stem Summer Institute at Western High School a program dedicated to teaching students from k-8 about the importance and joy that can be found in STEM programs for an affordable price) as well as volunteer experience with additional teaching for youth sports to work towards the goal of making myself a well rounded and passionate educator.
To further this goal I additionally plan to continue my education up to that of the terminal degree of Masters of Fine arts in Studio Art. I have only continued to find through my experiences with STEM programs, such as participation in and a leadership position in multiple FRC and FTC teams under FIRST robotics, that the visual acuity and critical lens developed through exposure to and the creation of art only help to further creativity and problem solving. This has only proven itself to be more and more relevant as I have extended my recent deep dive into 3d modeling with finding a deeper understanding of programs such as Solidworks and Blender.
As an additional portion of my interest in education I have began the planning of a free education program relevant to the topics that I have explored through school with my time in Computer Science, Robotics, Art, and 3d Modeling as at times I have found myself either at odds with the teaching styles of my teachers and would like to create additional resources for others that may feel the same way. No two people learn the same way and having as many varied resources as possible only encourages the further development of knowledge. Learning is fun and it should be for everyone regardless of their material background (the reason why I have decided to create this as a free program). A continuation through my degrees and additional higher education will only serve to deepen and layer my understanding of the subject matters I intend to share with others.
Finally, my education in both Computer Science and Studio Art has enabled me to begin developing my own works of art and media just like the creations that have inspired me for my entire life. I have always believed that everyone has a story that deserves to be told, but I have found positive representation for minority groups such as the LGBTQ+ and South Asians to be lacking in said media created not only in the US but globally.
