Bio

There has not been a time in my life that I can recall not hearing music and pulsating rhythms while I am awake. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the musical gene. Next to God and my family, I love music as I would a best friend. It is my constant companion. My aspiration is to major in Music Composition so that I can ultimately work in the film and movie industry. Because I see music as a universal language, I intend to use my musical gifts as a means of building bridges between diverse communities and individuals of various persuasions. It is to that end that I am seeking financial assistance to obtain a college degree in furtherance of my future aspirations. During my initial years as a child, I had a difficult time communicating with others. Thoughts were in my head, but it was a challenge for me to express myself. This resulted in my having to undergo speech and audio therapy. Although this was an initial hurdle for me, it ignited my musical passion. What I discovered in music was that I was able to communicate in ways other than through speech. Now that I am a college freshman who has overcome my initial communication issues, I feel empowered to make the world a better place by using my artistic gifts to promote stronger communities and enlighten the world at large about the collective good that is experienced when we respect and appreciate our differences and share our talents and gifts for the good of the whole.

Music and sound have been my passion for as long as I can remember. There are musicians on both sides of my family, so I probably inherited the music gene. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. However, composing music is my greatest joy. It is to that end that I am currently enrolled as a Music Composition major and freshman at Miami-University-Oxford. For many, the pandemic was extremely challenging because it disrupted our respective routines and temporarily prevented us from gathering socially. It was during this period that I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music. I started seriously composing music and testing my skills at producing music electronically. As a side hustle, I arranged and produced more than 50 songs that were used in virtual events. Hearing how people were positively impacted by the music that I produced during the pandemic was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. In addition to music, I enjoy doing audio work. In fact, I am an audio associate at my church and work closely with the music team and others in ensuring that the audio quality is of the highest quality. Because of my ear and music background, I am able to make immediate adjustments in areas which enhance the quality of the music that is rendered at worship services and programs. One reason why I am so passionate about music is because I see it as a means of inspiring our polarized world to get beyond what is divisive so we can celebrate our shared values and interests. Because music is a universal language, I see a message in it that if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. It is in this vein that I see music as a powerful tool that can unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people because its message transcends our human differences. Because of my love for music and the audio field, I feel that I will be optimally positioned to connect with diverse audiences and speak a language which resonates with everyone. In music, suspensions are beautifully orchestrated notes which initially create tension, but are resolved in such a way that you forget that the tension ever existed. One note of the suspension is stationary, whereas the other note moves and thereby resolves the tension. I see myself as the latter note who, through my musical and audio gifts, will be a bridge that will enable us to collectively rise above things which divide us so that we can bask in the beauty of life that surrounds us. By inspiring others with the music that resides in me, I hope to make Planet Earth a healthier and happier place for its residents.

From my perspective, the arts, and music in particular, are an artistic means by which a polarized population can be inspired to get beyond what is divisive and in turn, celebrate its shared values and interests. Because music is a universal language, there is a message in its lyrics, melodies and harmonies that if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. It is in this vein that I see music as a powerful tool that can unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people because its message transcends our human differences. Music is important to me because it is in my DNA. There are musicians on both sides of my family, so I probably inherited the music gene. My father, who is a classically trained pianist, exposed me to music at a very young age and nurtured that passion by encouraging me to participate in musical activities at school and in church. Although I enjoy playing the piano, the trombone is my primary and preferred instrument, Music composition, however, is my true passion. In fact, some of my musical productions are still being used. Hearing how people were positively impacted by the music that I produced during the pandemic was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and music industry. It is to that end that I am currently enrolled as a Music Composition major and freshman at Miami University-Oxford. From my perspective, the arts, and music in particular, is an artistic means by which a polarized population can be inspired to get beyond what is divisive and in turn, celebrate their shared values and interests. I am an African American male who takes pride in growing up in a community(Montgomery, Ohio) that is a model of racial harmony and equity. This is not to say that Montgomery is perfect, but our community has a collective mindset in which diversity, equity and inclusion are prioritized values. Growing up in Montgomery has enabled me to see what it means to be a neighbor and a valued human being. As I prepare to leave home to attend Miami University-Oxford, I am appreciative of the extent to which the Sycamore School District has prepared me for what lies ahead. I will be majoring in Music Composition. The teachers that I have had and the classes that I have taken so far have fully equipped me for my advanced study of Music Composition, Theory and Technology. Because I had band directors and music teachers who saw my talent and nurtured me, I, an African American student, was able to serve as first chair trombonist in a predominantly white high school. Additionally, two highlights of my senior year were being awarded the coveted John Philip Sousa Award and having the Sycamore Winds perform a piece that I arranged. Winning the John Philip Sousa Award was particularly rewarding because I was the third of three children in my immediate family to do so. Growing up in Montgomery, attending its schools and participating in its parades have reinforced my value as a unique individual and has made me feel comfortable revealing my authentic self. Because music is my passion and is in my DNA, my goal in life is to use my musical gifts in a way that inspires the community at large to celebrate our shared values and interests and do so in a way that fully respects and embraces the diverse segments of the global community. Having grown up in a wholesome community that embraces diversity and empowers individuals to excel has inspired me to work in an industry that will allow me to be an example of why it pays to promote principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. It is in this regard that my ultimate dream is to compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. Because music is a universal language, I feel that upon graduating from college with a degree in Music Composition, I will be equipped to be a bridge where walls have been erected and an artistic voice that will be capable of reaching and inspiring a diverse group of people to hear a message of unity, love and hope.

Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I enjoy composing music, playing the piano, keyboard and organ and producing music electronically. Like the diversity that is inherent in our culture, I appreciate and play different genres of music, including classical music, jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel and pop. My versatility in music is reflected in my participation in the Sycamore Winds, Jazz Ensemble, Big Band, Pep Band and Marching Band during my years in the Sycamore School District(Cincinnati, Ohio). Additionally, I was a pit musician for my high school's theater department and am an associate musician at my church. While we were hunkered down in our respective homes during the pandemic, I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music. It was during that time that I arranged and produced more than 50 songs that were used in virtual events. Not only that, but I started seriously composing music and putting what was in my head on paper. In addition to becoming first-chair trombonist in my high school's top band, receiving the John Philip Sousa award and having one of my instrumental pieces performed by the band at our final concert were two of the highlights of my high school experience. Producing music during the pandemic was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. To do so, I will need to obtain formal training beyond high school to be competitive in a field that attracts the best musicians. A thorough understanding of Music Composition, Theory and Technology will equip me with the skills that I need to pursue this endeavor. Herein lies the reason why I am excited about attending Miami University-Oxford and majoring in Music Composition because that academic experience will enable me to rise to the challenges that I will face in an extremely competitive market. Everyone has at least one gift and mine is music. Many who heard the virtual music that I arranged and produced during the pandemic expressed how uplifted they were by the music that I created at a time when our world was inundated with death, pain, anxiety and anger. In retrospect, I see how I can use my musical gifts to make Planet Earth a happier and healthier place for its residents. It is to that end that I want to share my musical gifts in a way that inspires other passengers who are on life's journey with me to bask in the beauty of life that surrounds us and celebrate the wonderful things that make life worth living.
      Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
Being a leader is not determined by title, but is based on a person's ability to attract others who are willing to take direction from or be mentored by the person who bears that title. Although I am somewhat quiet and reserved, I consider myself to be a leader because of positions I have held in which others followed my direction or respected me enough to allow me to be their mentor. I am passionate about music and have been so for the entirety of my life. I have perfect pitch, am knowledgeable about Music Theory and Technology, love the band and am serious about nurturing my skills as a trombonist and composer. Having these musical gifts enabled me to be a leader in various capacities during my years in the Sycamore School system. When a fellow trombonist struggled with music during Junior High School, I mentored him in private and helped him learn how to read music. In high school, I was first-chair trombonist in the Sycamore Winds and this was a position in which other trombonists were required to follow my lead. Not only that, but I also served on the Band Leadership Team and was the representative for senior band members. Both positions required me to lead others and take the initiative in resolving disputes and getting things done and doing so for the good of the whole. In retrospect, I see where the discipline and perseverance that come with being a good musician contributed to my being an effective leader. Becoming a disciplined musician does not happen by happenstance; rather, it is a progressive process that occurs as a musician refines his or her skills. As a musician develops discipline, he or she also cultivates patience, stamina and a determination to perfect his or her musical craft. These are qualities that I have developed and continue to nurture as a musician, which enables me to be a model for others to follow and a person who can be trusted to promote order and harmony and give meaningful directions to others. One of my passions is composing band music. Among other things, that requires me to have a mindset that allows me to hear different instruments and various sections of the band doing different things, but in a way in which the audience experiences a unified and cohesive sound and message. Having the ability to compose contrapuntal pieces has broadened my perspective so that I now prioritize the big picture over the fragmented pieces of the puzzle. From my perspective, the strongest leaders are those who are not caught off guard by disruptive agitators but are always focused on what is in the best interest of the whole. Tensions and disagreements are going to surface when you are dealing with people. However, leaders who have an eye for the big picture or a vision for the ultimate prize or reward find ways to reduce tension. My musical background has undoubtedly given me the tools to direct and lead others by example. I hope that as I mature and refine my musical skills, I will continue to find ways to make this world a better place by being an effective leader, mentor and coach. Vincent S. Oliver

It has been said that the apple does not fall far from the tree, and I find that to be true when I consider the female who has inspired me to pursue my dreams. My mother is the person about whom I speak, and she is a replica of her mother. Although my grandmother grew up in the country with meager means, she excelled academically and defied the odds by becoming a college professor. My mother inherited her mother's tireless spirit of determination and academic fervor and instilled that in me. Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. That should come as no surprise since there are musicians on both sides of my family. During my initial years as a child, I had a difficult time communicating with others. Thoughts were in my head, but it was a challenge for me to express myself. Upon recognizing my musical gifts, my mother helped me see that I could communicate in ways other than speech. It was her encouragement that enabled me to successfully navigate a childhood hurdle, and I started relying on music as a way of expressing my emotions. Not only was this therapeutic for me, but it boosted my confidence and caused me to see that I had a gift that made me a person of value. During my years in school, I was involved in activities that are too numerous to mention, and my mother was present at all of them. At times, she had other things to do, but she still found a way to shuffle things around so that she could be supportive of what I was doing. Seeing my mother's face at those events and hearing her supportive cheers always made me feel like I had reached a major milestone. If nothing else, it has given me the momentum that is needed for me to confidently transition to my future status as a college student who will be majoring in Music Composition at Miami University-Oxford. As is true for most teenagers, I sometimes experience moments in which I become anxious about what lies ahead. When this happens, my mother makes direct eye contact with me and reminds me that I am here for a reason and that the world is waiting to be blessed by the musical gifts that have been deposited in me. Hearing her speak with such clarity and resolution always puts my mind at ease and inspires me to follow through on my personal goals. I became completely immersed in music during the pandemic. I arranged and produced more than 50 songs that were used in virtual worship services, celebratory events and special programs. Seeing how people were positively impacted by the music that I produced during the pandemic was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. My mother's example has enabled me to see that music is a means through which I can share my voice with others. Doing so in the film and movie industry will enable me to reach diverse communities and audiences. Following my mother's example and teaching, I want to use my musical gifts in a way that inspires and enlightens others to bask in the beauty of life that surrounds us. Above all, I want to contribute something meaningful to the world that makes Planet Earth a healthier and happier place for its residents. If I am successful in doing so, I will have fulfilled the lessons that my mother instilled in me.

Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the music gene. I cannot say that anyone inspired me to pursue music. It is simply something that my DNA demands me to do. There is not a time when I am awake that I do not hear music. It is my constant companion and was my haven and release valve when the pandemic forced us to hunker down in our respective homes. I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music during the pandemic. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. Composing music and producing it electronically are also among my greatest joys. Because I was familiar with Music Technology, I possessed the skills to arrange and produce music electronically for virtual events that were held when gathering socially was risky. During the pandemic, I arranged and produced more than 50 songs for worship services, celebratory events and special programs. It was not until the pandemic that I seriously started putting tunes that were in my head on paper. Doing so enabled me to see that this is something that I am destined to do. Among my most recent achievements was having the top band at my high school perform a piece at our spring concert that I arranged. Since I will be majoring in Music Composition at Miami University-Oxford, having one of my original pieces performed by my high school band was a big boost for what lies ahead for me. Many who heard the virtual music that I arranged and produced during the pandemic expressed how uplifted they were by my musical arrangements. In retrospect, this experience caused me to see how meaningful my musical creations were when our world was saturated with death, pain, anxiety and anger. This is the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. Seeing how people were positively impacted by the music that I produced during the pandemic inspired me to pursue a larger platform in which I can reach diverse audiences with my musical gifts. We all have a voice, and I see music as the means through which I can have an impact on the global community and allow my voice to be heard. There is a message in music that if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. Since music is a powerful tool that can be used to unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people, I want to use my musical gifts in a way that inspires the community at large to abandon polarization and division in exchange for a collaborative spirit that enables us to collectively celebrate our shared values and interests. If I can do this, I feel that I will have fulfilled my purpose by making Planet Earth a healthier and happier place for its residents.

In the real world, dissonance is the tragic and unending discord that produces havoc in the global community. Dissonance is also present in music, but it is resolved as a musical masterpiece evolves and progresses to a final cadence. As a musician, I see myself being positioned to use my artistic gifts to relieve us of some of the tensions that have caused us to forget our shared values and common human bond. Human bridges are difficult to find in the real world because people are more inclined to build walls instead of bridges. This is not so in music. For example, a musical suspension initially creates tension, but the tension or dissonance is resolved when one note moves while the other note remains stationary. Given my eclectic and versatile musical background, I feel that I will be equipped to be a voice within a musical context that will be able to transcend human differences and reach and inspire a diverse group of people to celebrate what makes life worth living. Since music is a universal language, my musical gifts will enable me to make Planet Earth a happier and healthier place for its residents. With rising suicide and depression rates, along with an increase in violence and social unrest, I see music as a tool that can be used to tame the savage beast and help us find a way to foster peace and create a collective spirit in which we embrace peace and the mutual and unconditional acceptance of others. I am more than willing to do my part in bringing these community aspirations to fruition through my musical compositions and performances.
      Aspiring Musician Scholarship
Music has done two things for me, the first of which is allowing me to see that it is possible to co-exist in a diverse world in which different parts function as a cohesive and thriving community. In the real world, dissonance is the tragic and unending discord that disrupts our peace, stability and security. However, in music, dissonance represents a beautiful tapestry of seemingly incompatible sounds which resolve into something that is artistically pleasing. Whereas dissonance in real life causes many to feel uneasy, it creates opposite feelings for many in music who anticipate the joy of hearing the tension caused by the dissonance being resolved as a musical masterpiece evolves. Human bridges are difficult to find in the real world because people are more inclined to build walls instead of bridges. This is not so in music because suspensions are beautifully orchestrated notes which initially create tension, but are resolved in such a way that you forget that the tension ever existed. Imagine how wonderful our world would be if we had more people who mirror musical suspensions. What amazes me about suspensions is their ability to juxtapose a forward movement effect with stationary notes that are satisfied being where they are. Imagine a world in which progressive thinkers and people with stationary dispositions can live and function together as musical suspensions do. If we embraced the function of musical suspensions, we would find ways to move beyond our differences, celebrate our shared values and soar above the initial tensions in life and do so for the collective good. In addition to the foregoing, music has enabled me to see the therapeutic value of music in a broken and polarized world. Music is a healing balm for those who are bombarded by the storms of life. While others were hunkered down in their respective homes during the pandemic, I allowed myself to become immersed in music. It was during that time that I started seriously composing music and testing my skills at producing music electronically. That was therapeutic and productive for me at a time when being socially distanced was driving most people crazy. I arranged and produced more than 50 songs during the pandemic that were used in virtual worship services, celebratory events and special programs, including the annual MLK vesper that is held at my church. Many who heard the music that I arranged and produced, including some who live as far away as Texas, expressed how uplifted they were by my music. Being involved in that endeavor caused me to appreciate the positive impact that music can have on those who are inspired by what they hear. In retrospect, I realize how meaningful my virtual musical arrangements and productions were at a time when our world was saturated with death, pain, anxiety and anger. This was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. We all have gifts and music is mine. It has been instilled in me that giving extends beyond what we put in someone's hands because it includes what we put in their hearts. Like the musical suspension, I want to use my musical gifts in a way that inspires others to rise above life's tensions. By doing so, I will have done my part in making Planet Earth a happier and healthier place for its residents.

My high school band director has been a huge influence on my life. Not only was he an excellent mentor, but his genuine concern for all of his students and their development as musicians was beyond amazing. He was always available to provide feedback and went the extra mile in seeing that all band members were nurtured and developed to their fullest potential. He encouraged me to become a more disciplined musician and that resulted in my being selected as the first chair trombonist for my high school's top band and the recipient of the 2023 John Philip Sousa Award. Not only that, but he recognized my gift of composing music and included one of my arrangements in our most recent band concert. This was undoubtedly a highlight for me because it is the prelude to my pursuit of a degree in Music Composition at Miami University-Oxford. Upon graduating from college, my ambition is to compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. I have selected that field because I see it as a platform on which I can reach diverse audiences to present music that serves as a healing balm for our polarized world and allows us to celebrate our shared values and interests despite our differences. There is a message in music if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. As I see it, music is a powerful tool that can be used to unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people. It is to that end that I see my musical gifts as a vehicle for me to inspire and enlighten others and to make Planet Earth a happier and healthier place for its residents. What makes me a unique musician is my eclectic taste and ability to play and compose different styles of music. Like the diversity that is inherent in our culture, I appreciate the unique flavors of music that are reflected in the various genres of music because it is undoubtedly a rich part of our history and heritage. I feel that my musical versatility will serve me well because it will enable me to reach diverse audiences and be an artistic voice in the global community that will be capable of communicating a message that transcends our differences. In music, suspensions are beautifully orchestrated notes which initially create tension, but are resolved in such a way that you forget the tension ever existed. The most practical way to solve problems is to embrace a teamwork perspective and develop a community mindset. By doing so, you acknowledge that issues are easier to resolve when people work together and provide input for a common cause. And in many cases, this approach may not be financially prohibitive. When the pandemic temporarily suspended in-person gatherings, my church, like so many others, was forced to immediately transition to a virtual worship service format. Because I was the only person on the Music, Audio and Visual team who was familiar with Music Technology, it became my responsibility to provide music for virtual events. This was initially an intimidating task because I had to work with others who were much older than me and who were used to being in control. However, because we were in a desperate situation, the other team members were receptive to my initiatives. Amazingly, I benefited greatly from my collaboration with my fellow team members because it enabled me to appreciate their respective roles and allowed me to see how progress is made when we work together to achieve a common goal. As it turned out, I arranged and produced more than 50 songs that were used in virtual events. This, of course, enabled my church to continue a meaningful routine at a time when social gatherings were a risky proposition. I learned a lot from my music production role that I feel may be useful in addressing other issues. I am passionate about education and if I were in a position to do so, I would encourage others to apply a teamwork and community approach in addressing dysfunctions in our educational system. Although the purpose of obtaining a college education is to open doors of opportunity for everyone, our culture, due to systemic injustices, misses out on an opportunity to create a thriving global community in which all students, despite their skill sets, talents, race, gender, ethnicity, creed and social and economic status, are enabled to master their respective trades in a way that the community at large benefits from the application of their skills. Following this precept would include those who may not obtain a college degree, but whose skills would allow them to make a meaningful contribution to the global community. Many of the inequities and injustices in our system could be abated if our institutions of higher learning, trade schools and other enlightened and corporate entities were less concerned about their organizational status and more committed to equipping those who enter their doors to be at the top of their game. Exchanging a competitive and self-centered spirit for a mindset that prioritizes the placement of individuals in positions that allow them and the global community to thrive will likely inspire our culture to wholeheartedly embrace a mode of thinking in which everyone benefits when personal achievements are seen as being integrally tied to the creation of vibrant communities. What I have proposed herein requires little money and resources. All that is needed is the application of common sense and a willingness to embrace a community mindset in which everyone, including the community at large, is enriched. We can learn to solve problems by adopting projects, finding partners and embracing a community spirit that encourages us to see the project in question beyond ourselves. Upon doing so, we will eventually see a communal spirit in our culture that functions as a healthy heart that services the organs and organs that work together in ensuring that the body functions properly. I am passionate about education because it is the key that unlocks the door of opportunities for minorities and other underrepresented groups. Not only is education vital to the personal growth of individuals, but it is the engine that allows communities to thrive. When sensible and generous investments are made in education, it enables everyone, including minorities, to compete for the best jobs when they enter the job market. Unfortunately, many, due to the sub-par education that they receive, are forced to pursue options other than college when they graduate from high school. Unsurprisingly, this has a much greater impact on members of underrepresented groups. Two primary things are achieved when society prioritizes education. Students are given the tools that are needed to help them reach their full potential in life. Additionally, a good education equips students to apply what they have learned in a way that benefits the good of the community at large. Under ideal circumstances, individuals in a society that prioritizes education collectively ascribe value to all fields of study and do so without pretentiously exalting the value of some areas of study over others. Everyone matters when we operate from this perspective and equip students with unique and appropriate skill sets that allow them to master their trade and subsequently obtain meaningful and lucrative employment. I am passionate about doing my part in seeing that society as a whole becomes mindful of this perspective of education because I believe it will produce a population of well-educated graduates who, despite their various skill sets and backgrounds, are at the top of their game and are prepared to make a meaningful contribution to the community at large. As I see it, issues confronting minorities and underrepresented groups will abate when our perspective concerning education ensures that meaningful educational opportunities are equitably extended to everyone irrespective of their skill set, background, race, creed, financial status etc. This mindset will enable us to effectively treat every skill and profession as being an integral part of a global community in which salaries and wages fairly reflect the value and quality of the service that is being rendered. My band director has had the greatest impact on my development as a student and person. Not only is he an excellent mentor, but his genuine concern for all of his students and their development as musicians is beyond amazing. He is always available to provide feedback and goes the extra mile in seeing that all band members are nurtured and developed to their fullest potential. He encouraged me to become a more disciplined musician and that resulted in my being selected as the first chair trombonist for my high school's top band. Under his tutelage, I gained a greater appreciation for my musical gifts and the value of sharing them with others. He is undoubtedly the epitome of a teacher who takes his calling seriously and understands his role in equipping his students with the tools that are needed to become responsible adults, disciplined college students and successful employees in their respective fields. In music, suspensions are beautifully orchestrated notes which initially create tension, but are resolved in such a way that you forget that the tension ever existed One note of the suspension is stationary, whereas the other note moves and thereby resolves the tension. My band director reminds me of the latter note. Like him, I want to nurture, mentor and inspire others to be at their best game and help them navigate life's tensions and challenges.

Music is a vital part of my existence, and so much so, that I cannot imagine life without it. Not only is music my passion, but it is in my DNA. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the music gene. One of my earliest joys was when I was featured in a piece in the fourth grade in which I played the drums. During the performance, the music director allowed me to improvise on the spot, and the encouragement that I received from the audience made me realize that I had a special gift. I must have played fairly well because my impromptu solo lasted 2 to 3 minutes. Since my older siblings received positive feedback when they performed with their respective instruments, the attention from my performance gave me the confidence that I needed from that point on to feel that I, too, had something to offer to the world at large. It was a few years later that I started playing the trombone and taking lessons so that I could be at the top of my game in the school band. It did not take long for me to develop a close kinship with the trombone and that feeling still exists. With practice and discipline, I ultimately became the first chair trombonist for my high school's top band(Sycamore Winds). In addition to performing with the Sycamore Winds, I am in the Marching Band, Big Band, Jazz Ensemble and Pep band. I also am a pit musician for my school's theater department and am an associate musician at my church. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I also enjoy playing the piano, organ and keyboard. I became completely immersed in music during the pandemic. Because I was familiar with Music Technology, the door opened for me to arrange and produce more than 50 songs that were used for virtual worship services, celebratory events and special occasions. Seeing how people were positively impacted by the music that I produced during the pandemic was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. It is to that end that I will be attending Miami University-Oxford in the fall and majoring in Music Composition. From grade school up until this point in my life, music has enabled me to see my value as a person and artist and has given me the discipline that I need to flourish in my future endeavors. Along with my father, who is an accomplished musician, Mr. James Blankenship, my band director, has influenced me greatly. Not only is he an excellent mentor, but he goes the extra mile in seeing that all band members are nurtured and developed to their fullest potential. He encouraged me to become a more disciplined musician and that resulted in me being selected as the first chair trombonist for the Sycamore Winds. When I started playing the trombone, my father, who is the Minister of Music at my church, immediately had me showcase my talent at the Sunday School Easter program. After doing that, I started accompanying the choir during worship services and have continued doing so. This, of course, allowed me to feel comfortable performing in public. My father has instilled in me the importance of sharing my musical gifts so that others can experience the music that saturates my body, mind and spirit. My goal in life is to share my musical gifts in a way that makes Planet Earth a happier and healthier place for its residents.

Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the music gene. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. My eclectic taste is reflected by my participation in the Sycamore Winds as first chair trombonist, the Marching Band, Pep Band, Big Band and Jazz Ensemble. Additionally, I am a pit musician for my school's theater department and am an associate musician at my church. Music is a vital part of my existence, and so much so, that I cannot imagine life without it. Everyone has a purpose in life and I see mine as using my musical gifts to uplift and inspire others who are on this journey with me. For many, the pandemic was extremely challenging because it disrupted the norm and temporarily prevented us from gathering socially. However, while others were trying to find something to do when we were hunkered down in our respective homes, I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music. It was during that time that I started seriously composing music and testing my skills at producing music electronically. The pandemic opened the door for me to apply my Music Technology skills and do so from my music production station at home. During the pandemic, I arranged and produced more than 50 songs that were used in virtual worship services, celebratory events and special programs, including the annual ecumenical MLK vesper that is held at my church. Seeing how people were positively impacted by the music that I produced during the pandemic was the seed that inspired me to pursue a career in which I compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. It has been instilled in me that the community at large should be the ultimate beneficiary of the music that saturates the body, mind and spirit of the person who creates and presents it. It is to that end that my ambition is to activate my music passion in a way that inspires and enlightens others. Working in the film and movie industry will put me on a platform on which I can share my musical gifts with a larger audience and appeal to a diverse population. There are different avenues for people to address social issues and contribute something meaningful to the global community. Music is the platform that I have been given to make my voice heard. There is a message in music that if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. Music is a powerful tool that can be used to unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people because its message transcends human differences. From my perspective, music is a tool that I can use to build bridges where walls have been erected and to inspire our diverse and divided world to get beyond things that polarize us so we can collectively celebrate our shared values and interests. Creativity and innovation are in my DNA, and that is probably true for most musicians. I can read what is on a musical score and create music and improvise contemporaneously. My flexibility in being able to do both and my familiarity with Music Technology has enabled me to fluidly adjust and adapt to changes in technology in the field of music. I anticipate that my comfort level in this regard will only increase as I continue my studies in Music Technology in college. Moreover, I also plan to take courses in Film studies to prepare me for my career in the film and movie industry. As such, I feel I will be equipped to adjust my artistic skills to any changes in technology that will have an impact on my career. Providing music in the film and movie industry will position me to artistically enlighten others in a way that the chaos, doubt and fear that is rampant in our culture are replaced by peace, hope and faith in the principles that enable us to co-exist in a diverse world. I believe a change in how society responds to the problems of the disadvantaged will become a moot issue when we wholeheartedly embrace a mindset that envisions a community that promotes the good of the whole. This, of course, requires us to treat the community as consisting of a diverse group of people who co-exist in a structured setting or geographic locality and whose individual skills and talents are equally valued. When society operates from that perspective, opportunities are extended according to a person's skill set and consideration of factors such as race, gender, ethnic background and social standing in the community are not used in the equation to determine who gets to do what. Merit, as opposed to trivial factors that cause certain people and individuals to be defined or treated as disadvantaged, will determine how jobs, positions and opportunities are distributed when we change our way of thinking about the value that each person has in the global community. This, in turn, will cause us to be more respectful of others and not treat certain people as though they do not matter. Instead of considering the interests, rights and abilities of all, the current concept of community only considers the needs and desires of an elite few and does so at the expense of excluding the concerns, interests and potential value of many who live within the community's borders. Urban renewal is an example of how the interests of a privileged few have caused fancy and expensive eateries to replace Mom and Pops restaurants and expensive homes to replace treasured residential pillars. This reduces the population of the local community by forcing many to leave in pursuit of affordable housing. Moreover, those who need lucrative jobs to provide for their families are often denied that opportunity because of irrelevant factors and considerations that force them into a box which results in them being disrespected, dehumanized and denied opportunities that are extended to a privileged few. Unfortunately, the "ours versus them" mentality which our society has embraced has become a serious impediment to our effectively reaching a point at which we genuinely value everyone's worth. Our warped perspective of community has undoubtedly been visibly narrowed in scope to a limited group of people who look a certain way, have a certain pedigree and whose economic status enables them to call the shots. Tragically, the disadvantaged individuals who are being excluded from the community are, in many cases, being politically disenfranchised because of gerrymandering and unfounded concerns that voting disparities are resulting in unfair elections. As a start to addressing the problems of the disadvantaged, I feel that we must first collectively discard the culture that causes us to pacify the agendas of a few to the exclusion of acting in the best interests of the whole. And upon achieving that, we can then work on finding ways to value and appreciate what everyone has to offer for the collective good and suppress the irrational sentiments that cause arbitrary disparities, inequities and injustices to unnecessarily exist. Our laws and policies cannot, standing alone, rectify the problem. We need a collective change of heart and mind to effectively create a society in which we no longer refer to or treat anyone as being disadvantaged. This can only happen when we embrace the idea of a global community in which the interests and rights of all are valued on an equal basis and such is reflected in the equitable participation of everyone in the global community's affairs.

I am a senior at Sycamore High School(Cincinnati, Ohio) who will be graduating in May and beginning my study in Music Composition at Miami University-Oxford in the fall. Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the musical gene. Coming from a family with a musical background has taught me the importance of sharing my gifts with others. As such, I realize that giving extends beyond what we put in someone's hands because it also includes what we put in their hearts. The COVID pandemic started me on a personal journey that enabled me to see the value in using my musical gifts to bring joy and relief to others at a time when attendance at in-person events was risky. When the pandemic temporarily suspended in-person worship services, my church, like so many others, was forced to immediately transition to a virtual worship service format. Because of my familiarity with Music Technology, the door opened for me to produce music for my church when worship services, celebratory events and special programs, including the MLK ecumenical service, were done virtually. I arranged and produced more than 50 songs during this period that were used in virtual events. Many who heard my virtual musical arrangements, including some who live as far away as Texas, expressed how uplifted they were by the music. In retrospect, I realize how I was able to cause others to experience joy and relief when our world was inundated with death, pain, anguish and anger. Not only that, but the music that I produced for my church during the pandemic was a bridge that enabled us to navigate the unknown and thereby find a way to continue a vital and meaningful routine of the church. An unexpected benefit that occurred as a result of my music production work has been the church's ability to now share music with those who, because of health or other reasons, are unable to attend in-person gatherings. Despite the many challenges that the pandemic created, my musical arrangements opened the door for our music to be heard by an audience beyond the local congregation. As such, it has proven to be a fruitful means of expanding the church's outreach projects. Music is a powerful tool that can be used to inspire others and serve as a healing balm for those who are experiencing hardships in life. The feedback that I received from the music that I produced during the pandemic enabled me to see the value of sowing the gift of music so that others can experience the beauty and intensity of the music that saturates the body, mind and spirit of the person who creates and presents it. It is to that end that my ambition is to use my musical gifts to inspire others so that I can assist in making Planet Earth a healthier and happier place for its residents. Vincent S. Oliver

More than anything, I am proud of America’s democratic and constitutional principles and I feel privileged to live in a country in which the military defends the rights upon which our democracy is based. There is always a lesson to be learned when you study history and see the fractures and issues that have caused other countries and governments to fail, and in many cases, internal threats are the primary cause of a promising country’s demise. When these threats and fissures are present, even a strong military that defends the country from external threats, is virtually powerless to defend the country against the toxic presence of those who are unwilling to share their rights and liberties with others. If I could wave a magic wand and make changes in America, I would get rid of political parties because they breed polarization and ill will against opposing opinions and this precludes constructive action from being taken that benefits the whole. In a polarized climate such as what currently exists in America, the spirit of compromise is impossible because everyone is entrenched in their respective political camps. Instead of seriously listening to opposing views and trying to reasonably reach a consensus on matters on which we can agree, our political parties are holding us hostage to a system that prioritizes the political interests of our leaders, representatives and political candidates over what is in the best interest of those whom they are elected to serve. We need to reach a point at which talking to or agreeing with those who entertain different views is not considered a sign of betrayal, but is simply another perspective that is worthy of consideration, Democracy works best when we allow our heads of reason, as opposed to our hearts of intolerance, to dictate our affairs. It is to that end that I propose that a change in the current temperament of American politics can start with requiring executive, legislative and judicial candidates to pass a test in which they demonstrate a correct understanding and application of constitutional and democratic principles. Instead of simply allowing political candidates to pretentiously take a position on an issue, we should require them to provide constitutional and/or legal support for their respective positions. They should also be required to offer alternative views if factors such as the economy, public opinion or unforeseen circumstances undermine the merits of their original position. A failure on our part to address the toxic political mindset that has attacked our country will only lead to a deepening erosion of the democratic fabric of our government. Instead of allowing leadership to dictate what happens in America, it is time for us to make our political leaders accountable to us, and that can begin with us eliminating the unbearable stench and gridlock which the party system has forced upon those who are yearning for the realization of a more perfect union that runs like a vehicle that has had a thorough tune-up.

Although I am quiet and reserved, I have a strong sense of who I am and my purpose in life. Music is my passion and has been so for as long as I can remember. Unlike my siblings who are extremely social and gravitate to social settings, I prefer being at home and enjoying music and doing so in solitude. My creative juices are awakened and inspired during my solitary moments at home. Whereas the pandemic was challenging for many, it opened the door for me to become completely immersed in music. Not only did I start seriously composing music at such time, but I tested my skills at producing music electronically. When the pandemic temporarily suspended worship services at my church, it positioned me to apply my Music Technology skills and assist my father in producing music for virtual worship services, celebratory events and special programs. I arranged and produced more than 50 songs for virtual events. Being able to do so caused me to appreciate my value as a person and artist and reinforced my understanding of my purpose in using my musical gifts to improve the quality of life for others who share Planet Earth with me. It was refreshing to bring joy and relief to people at a time when the world was inundated with death, pain, anxiety and anger. Before the pandemic, my community activities were limited to serving as a Music Associate and an Associate Sound Technician at my church. And I did so and continue to do so voluntarily. Within the past year, I have expanded my church and community services to perform more intricate audio and musical chores that enhance the quality of what parishioners hear during in-person events. This includes music that is performed for ecumenical events such as the annual MLK program. Additionally, I am proud of the fact that my high school has been using and will include some of my instrumental arrangements at our spring band concert. I am excited about this because it validates the heart tug that I have been feeling that the music that saturates my mind, body and spirit is intended to be shared with others who reside outside of my personal orbit. My ultimate dream is to compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. The opportunities that I have recently had in applying my musical and technical skills are, from my perspective, preparing me for that endeavor. There is a message in music that if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. Music is a powerful tool that can be used to unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people because its message transcends our human differences. From my perspective, creating an impact serves two primary purposes; it enables a person to experience personal fulfillment when he or she uses his or her skills and talents to improve the quality of life for others. Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. There has not been a day in my life that I can recall not hearing music when I am awake. And there is always a constant tug on my heart that reminds me that my purpose in life is to use my musical gifts to enrich the community at large. I experienced an awakening during the recent pandemic that reminded me of the purpose of my existence. As was true for many, in-person worship services at my church were suspended when we were unable to gather socially. That, however, opened a door for me to produce music electronically for our in-person worship services, celebratory programs and special events. While others were trying to find things to do during the pandemic, I started seriously composing music and experimenting with Music Technology. I arranged and produced more than 50 songs when practically everything was virtual. This, in turn, caused me to appreciate the positive impact that music can have on those who are inspired by what they hear. In retrospect, I realize how meaningful my music production gig was at a time when in-person gatherings were risky. I experienced a sense of fulfillment in being able to cause others to experience joy and relief when our world was inundated with death, pain, anxiety and anger. At an early age, I encountered communication issues that impacted my confidence. Thoughts were in my head, but I was unable to express myself where others could clearly understand me. It did not help that I had an older brother and sister who, from my perspective, were living a carefree life. My situation caused me to experience anger issues and I inevitably underwent speech and audio therapy. When something challenges us, many close their eyes to the matter and simply hope that it disappears. However, that rarely happens because some things require us to play an active role in moving beyond our struggles. and challenges. What I learned from my communication issues was that perspective matters. Things started to improve when I cooperated with the speech and audio therapist and treated my sessions as a fun activity as opposed to something I was being forced to do. My love for music also helped. Being a part of a musical family was an obvious plus for me because the natural ability that I have to hear, play and compose music built my confidence in ways that I could not have otherwise imagined. Instead of succumbing to feelings of anger, I started to relieve my frustration by creating or playing soothing tunes on my keyboard. If that did not work, I released my frustration on my drums. Music ultimately boosted my confidence and helped me overcome my communication challenges. As is true for many, the pandemic was a major disruption to my routine and it happened shortly after I started high school. One of the biggest challenges for me was dealing with the fear of contracting a debilitating and deadly disease that was causing many to die or become seriously ill. There are five of us in my immediate family and everyone, except me, ultimately got COVID. Thankfully, no one in my family suffered serious repercussions from their respective COVID experiences. However, I was constantly concerned about contracting COVID and even felt some guilt that I escaped its brutal attack. The range of emotions that I felt from the global COVID experience was paralyzing, and at times, excruciatingly terrifying. But as I did during the years in which I experienced communication issues, I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music. Even though I experienced fear because I could not control the situation, I released that emotion in my music and that enabled me to press through the uncertainties that accompanied the pandemic. Instead of embracing a gloom and doom perspective, I found a way to find something positive in a situation that had completely disrupted my psyche. As it turned out, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise for me because it awakened in me an opportunity to test my skills at producing music electronically and heightened my interest in Music Composition. It was at such time that I produced more than 50 songs that were used in virtual worship services, celebratory events and special programs. The COVID challenge and producing music during the pandemic are what inspired me to pursue a career in which I produce and compose music for the film and movie industry. And it is to that end that I will be attending Miami-University-Oxford in the fall in anticipation of my career as a future professional musician. It has been said that if you are given lemons, make lemonade, and I find that to be a reasonable approach to effectively dealing with life's challenges.

Music is my passion and has been so for as long as I can remember. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. I enjoy and play different genres of music, including classical music, jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel and pop tunes. While many were trying to find things to do during the pandemic, I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music. It was during that time that I started seriously composing music and was inspired to pursue a career of composing and producing music for the film and movie industry. To that end, I will be attending Miami University-Oxford in the fall and will be majoring in Music Composition. When the pandemic temporarily suspended in-person worship services at my church, the door opened for me to use my Music Technology skills and produce music electronically for worship services, celebratory events and special programs. I arranged and produced more than 50 songs when we were unable to gather socially. This experience caused me to appreciate the positive impact that music can have on those who are inspired by what they hear. As it turned out, this was the seed that inspired my interest in producing and composing music for the film and movie industry. Producing music and causing people to experience joy and relief when our world was saturated with death, pain, anxiety and anger caused me to realize that my musical gifts had a purpose beyond myself. What I realized was that my musical gifts and destiny were connected to the global community. Becoming a professional musician and working in the film and movie industry will require me to pursue education beyond high school since that field is very competitive and attracts the best musicians. A thorough understanding of Music Composition, Music Theory and Music Technology will equip me with the skills that I need to rise to the challenges that I will face in an extremely competitive market. There is a message in music that if profoundly expressed, can replace walls with bridges. Music is a powerful tool that can be used to unify the hearts, minds and spirits of a diverse group of people because its message transcends our human differences. It is to that end that I see myself using my musical gifts as a healing balm for our polarized world. By inspiring others with the music that resides in me, I can make Planet Earth a healthier and happier place for its residents. In music, suspensions are beautifully orchestrated notes which initially create tension but are resolved in such a way that you forget that the tension ever existed. One note of the suspension is stationary, whereas the other note moves and thereby resolves the tension. I see myself as the latter note who, through music, will be positioned to be a bridge builder in the global community. And in that capacity, I anticipate using music as a means of inspiring the community at large to get beyond things that polarize us so that we can collectively celebrate our shared values and interests. Since music is a universal language, and given my eclectic musical taste, I feel that I will be positioned to inspire others to rise above life's tensions and challenges so that we can collectively bask in the beauty of life that surrounds us.

My parents have instilled in me the value of giving with the expectation that it will benefit you as much as it will those who are the recipients of the gift. And in my capacity as a musician, I have been taught that giving extends beyond what we put in someone's hands because what we deposit in someone's heart is equally meaningful. It is this principle upon which my ultimate dream of composing and producing music for the film and movie industry is based. The pandemic was a crossroads for me in that it opened my eyes to how I was positioned to use my musical and technical gifts in a way that would have a meaningful impact on others. When the pandemic temporarily suspended our in-person worship services, our church, like so many others, was forced to immediately transition to a virtual worship service format. Because my father, who is the church's Minister of Music, was not comfortable producing music electronically, I offered my time and service in assisting him in that endeavor so that our church would have music at a time when it was not feasible to have in-person events. The pandemic reminded me of what I had been taught about the value of embracing a servanthood mindset. During the pandemic, and before in-person services resumed more than a year after things were shut down, I produced and arranged more than fifty songs that were used in worship services, celebratory events and other special programs. This experience was beneficial for me in that it enabled me to see that I had the technical and musical tools at my disposal to make it possible for people to be inspired by music at a time when our world was saturated with death, pain, anxiety and anger. The impact of what I was doing for my church and for others who listened to our services and programs was reinforced by feedback that I received concerning how people were uplifted by my musical arrangements and productions. I have been an Associate Sound Technician at the church since about 2018, Since then, I have addressed audio issues that surfaced during in-person and virtual events. I am involved in this activity because it is an opportunity for me to use my gifts to enhance the audio experience of our audience. Like my music production work, my service as an Associate Sound Technician is rooted in my desire to use my gifts and skills to heighten the quality of what the audience hears. Working in the film and movie industry will allow me to combine my artistic and technical skills in a way that will enable me to share the music that saturates my body, mind and spirit and do so on a larger platform. I see myself as a bridge builder and feel that through music, I will be positioned to build bridges where walls have been erected. And in so doing, I will hopefully be able to inspire our diverse and polarized community to get beyond that which divides us and celebrate our shared values and interests. Since music is a universal language, and given my eclectic musical taste, I believe I will be equipped to cause others to soar above life's tensions and challenges so that we can collectively bask in the beauty of life that surrounds us. If I am successful in this regard, I sincerely feel that I will have done my part in making Planet Earth a happier and healthier place for its residents.

It is largely because of my father that I want to become a professional musician. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the music gene. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. I have an older brother and sister who, like me, were undoubtedly introduced to my father's daily "serenades' on the piano well before birth. Not only was music a part of our daily routine, but as we got older and started learning how to play our respective instruments, accompanying my father eventually became an expectation for us. And since he is the Minister of Music at our church, accompanying him there was a given. When I started playing the trombone, my father had me showcase my talent during the Sunday School Easter program. At the time, I did not realize that he was preparing me for my future and allowing me to feel comfortable and secure performing in public. After playing in Sunday School, I quickly graduated to accompanying the choir during worship services and that has continued to this date. When the pandemic temporarily suspended our in-person worship services, our church, like so many others, was forced to immediately transition to a virtual worship service format. Since my father is uncomfortable dealing with music technology, the pandemic and the situation at the church enabled me to play a major role in producing and presenting music for our virtual services. Helping my father caused me to appreciate the positive impact that music can have on those who are inspired by what they hear. Not only that, but working with him instilled in me the value of teamwork in addressing a common cause. From my father's example, I have learned that giving extends beyond what we put in someone's hands because it also includes what we put in their hearts. This realization became clear to me as a result of feedback that we received about the music that I arranged and produced during the pandemic. My father's approach to music has enabled me to see the value of sowing the gift of music so that others can experience the intensity of the music that saturates the body, mind and spirit of the person who presents it. In retrospect, I realize how meaningful our collaborative music production gig was at a time when in-person gatherings were risky. Under these circumstances, my father and I were able to cause people to experience joy and relief when our world was bombarded with death, pain, anxiety and anger. My father's confidence in my comfort level and skills with Music Technology further caused me to appreciate my value as a person and artist. Everyone needs a blueprint in life to help them set and achieve their goals. My father's example and support are a big reason why I am going to enroll in Miami University-Oxford and obtain a degree in Music Composition. Since my field of interest is very competitive, I will need to obtain formal training beyond high school to be competitive in a field that attracts the best musicians. It has been instilled in me that our gifts are intended to be used to benefit the community at large. I have witnessed this from my father's example and like him, I want the music that I present to cause people to soar above life's tensions and challenges so that they can bask in the beauty of life that surrounds us.

When our church transitioned to a virtual service format a few years ago, that was an opportunity for me to produce and present music electronically. This was a period of awakening in which I was inspired to pursue a career in the film and movie industry and use my musical gifts in that venue. Human bridges are difficult to find because people are more inclined to build walls instead of bridges. I want to be a bridge builder who, through music, will inspire the global community to get beyond things that polarize us and celebrate our shared values and interests. Since music is a universal language, I feel that as a composer and music producer, I will be in a position to inspire the community at large to soar above life's tensions and challenges and bask in those things which make life worth living. Giving extends beyond what we put in someone's hands because it also includes what we put in their hearts. My personal experiences have taught me how we are personally benefited when we sow the gift of music in the hearts of others. For many, the pandemic was a major hurdle, but for me, it was a blessing in disguise because it enabled me to see my value as a person and artist. It is to that end that I feel compelled to brighten the world in which I live with the music that is embedded in my spirit. I believe everyone has a purpose in life and I feel mine is to uplift others with the music that saturates my mind, body and spirit. Not only did I not experience boredom during those months, but I started seriously composing music and testing my skills at producing music electronically. Although I am not a product of the foster care system, my passion is music as it was for Mr. Montanez. In addition to playing the trombone, I enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. My musical taste is varied in that I play different genres of music including, classical music, jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel and pop tunes. When others were hunkered down during the pandemic trying to find things to do, I allowed myself to become completely immersed in music. It was during that time that I started seriously composing music and testing my skills at producing music electronically. During my years in school, my musical activities have included my participation in the Sycamore Winds, the Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band and OMEA District XIV Symphony Honor Band. For the past two years, I have been a pit musician for the school's theater department and have held the first chair trombonist position in my school's top band. Additionally, I am a Music Associate at my church and have been so for approximately 8-years. When the pandemic temporarily suspended our in-person worship services, our church, like so many others, was forced to immediately transition to a virtual worship service format. It was during this time that I produced, arranged and presented music for our virtual services and did so electronically. Many who heard the music that I produced, including some who live as far away as Texas, expressed how uplifted they were by the music that I created and arranged. This experience enabled me to see myself using my musical gifts on a larger platform where I can reach and touch more people. My name is Vincent S. Oliver. I grew up in the Greater Cincinnati area and am a senior at Sycamore High School. My dream is to compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. Miami University-Oxford recently accepted my college application, and that is where I want to go. Upon enrolling in August 2023, my immediate plan is to major in Music Composition. Although the trombone is my primary instrument, I also enjoy playing the piano, keyboard and organ. During my years in school, my musical activities have included my participation in the band, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble and Pep Band. For the past two years, I have held the first chair trombonist position in the school's top band. In recent years, I have provided music for the High School's theater department and participated in OMEA District XIV's Symphony Honor Band in 2020, 2022 and 2023. I do not have a role model per se, but my band leader, James Blankenship, is someone whom I highly respect. He has impacted me greatly and is someone who is a great example for others to follow. Not only does he have a passion for music, but he genuinely cares about and nurtures his students and does so on a non-discriminatory basis. Mr. Blankenship is always available to provide added instruction and feedback and goes the extra mile in seeing that all band members are nurtured and developed to their fullest potential. Being in the band and Marching Band, among other things, has helped me envision my future career as a Music Composer and Music Technician in the film and movie industry. Mr. Blankenship helped me wade through uncertainties that I initially entertained, and I have now reached a point at which I can see my aspirations coming to fruition. Mr. Blankenship reminds me of a musical suspension in that he finds ways to motivate and move students beyond their initial apprehensions and insecurities. Among other things, he is naturally able to inspire students to a point at which they feel confident about their potential and future. Musical suspensions consist of a stationary note that is satisfied where it is, and a note that moves to resolve the tension. I, at one point, was the stationary note, and Mr. Blankenship was the movement or boost that I needed to resolve my inner tensions and become focused on my value as a person and musician. Because of his influence, I have moved beyond the initial tension that I experienced, and am ready to use my musical gifts to build bridges within the global community. As I see it, we can choose to become bridges or walls. Bridges reach out to others, whereas walls polarize, divide and alienate us by putting us in different camps. Like Mr. Blankenship, I want to be a bridge that connects people and allows others to appreciate and develop their unique gifts. And like Mr. Blankenship, I want to be able to be a bridge that causes others to forget that the tension they initially experienced ever existed. I sincerely believe I can do so as a musical composer and producer. My primary aspiration is to create music that will enable the community at large to celebrate its shared values despite our differences. Having the benefit of Mr. Blankenship's example as a bridge builder and nurturer has undoubtedly given me a realistic and commendable compass for me to follow in pursuing my life's dream.

During the college application process, I have come to realize how expensive it is to obtain a college education. If I am awarded scholarships, I see that as a means of my reducing the amount of time that I will need to work while I am in school. That, in turn, will increase my study time and will thereby allow me to concentrate on getting good grades. As I see it, obtaining good grades will make me more attractive to potential employers and my final college transcript will subsequently reveal the extent to which my college education was successful. From my perspective, obtaining scholarships will make it possible for me to prioritize quality study time over work. There has not been a time in my life that I can recall not hearing music and pulsating rhythms while I am awake. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the musical gene. Music has been my passion from as far back as I can remember. Among other things, my musical activities have included my participation in the band, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble and Pit Band. For the past two years, I have held the first chair trombonist position in my High School's top band and have served as a pit musician for the school's theater department. Although the trombone is my principal instrument, I also play the piano and organ. However, my greatest joy is composing and producing music. It is to that end that I am pursuing a major in Music Composition and Music Technology so that I can ultimately compose and produce music for the film and movie industry. Passion and talent are not the only things that cause a musician to be successful. Discipline, focus, patience and perseverance are equally significant in a musician's developmental process. I feel that my musical experiences as of this date have more than adequately prepared me for the demands of the college musical and liberal arts curriculum. As such, I feel that I am ready to take on that challenge and excel. Although many talented and successful musicians have no formal musical training, it is always safer and more advantageous to have a degree in music because, if nothing else, it validates your understanding of basic musical principles. Because my concentration as a Music Composition major will encompass an understanding of foundational Music Theory concepts, my chances of entering the film and movie industry as a music composer and producer will be substantially enhanced by my acquisition of a college degree. Doing well in college and obtaining a degree is undoubtedly an avenue that is required for musicians who are serious about mastering the art of Music Composition. Thus, obtaining a college degree for me is a non-negotiable proposition.

What excites me most about college is that it will be the first step that I take in making my dream of working in the film and movie industry a reality. There has not been a time in my life that I can recall not hearing music and pulsating rhythms while I am awake. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the musical gene. Since my ultimate goal is to compose and produce music for the film and movie industry, my immediate plan is to major in Music Composition and Music Technology to prepare myself for the future. The thought of attending college further excites me because it will enable me to continue developing my musical skills so that I can be at the top of my game. The thought of being around other students who, too, have a passion for music is an anticipated delight. For most of my life, I have been a member of the school band, and for the past two years, I have held the first chair trombonist position in the top band. Additionally, my participation in musical activities has included my membership in the Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band and Pep Band. And for approximately two years, I have been a pit musician for my school's theater department. I have thoroughly enjoyed the friendships that I have made as a result of my participation in these activities, and I look forward to expanding my network of friends in the musical field during my years at Miami University-Oxford. Because my father is a diabetic, my family tries as much as possible to eat healthy meals. My goal is to continue that dietary routine in the future because it will enable me to have more energy and think more clearly while I am dealing with the challenges of the college experience. Watching my father has also taught me the value of resting and consistently getting an adequate amount of sleep. One reason why I am seeking scholarships is that if granted, such will reduce my work hours while I am in school and will give me more time to study, get a reasonable amount of sleep and stay healthy. Next to God and family, music is my next love. It is therapeutic for me and revives me spiritually and emotionally when I am running low on fuel. When others were trying to find ways to cope during the raging months of the pandemic, music was my solace and it enabled me to soar above the dismal clouds that inundated the lives of other people. I realize that college will have its' challenges, but thankfully, music will be an outlet of release for me as it has been in the past. Since my musical taste is eclectic, I will have a wide range of music that I can play and/or listen to when my spirit is low. Thankfully, the gift of music benefits me on a personal level. Hopefully, the music that I anticipate sharing with my future audiences will be equally inspirational, uplifting and therapeutic for them.

My ability to be musically creative is my greatest asset. Working with my father also taught me the value of partnership in executing projects and it allowed me to see the impact that music can have on people as a means of inspiring positive emotions. Not only that, but I have a greater awareness of how we can communicate with others and do so in a powerful way through music. Since my passion includes composing and producing music, I envision myself ultimately using my musical gifts in the film and movie industry because I feel that I can be a voice for others in my generation as well as be a bridge that allows the community at large to see and feel what is relevant to us. However, my immediate aspiration is to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and obtain a degree in Music Composition and Music Technology. During the pandemic, I produced and arranged more than fifty songs that were used in worship services and other celebratory programs. This experience was beneficial for me in that it enabled me to see that I had the requisite creative skills and technical and musical tools at my disposal to make it possible for people to be inspired by music at a time when attendance at in-person events was risky. Many who heard the music that I arranged and produced, including some who lived as far away as Texas, expressed how uplifted they were by my creative work. This has inspired me to find ways to reach more people in the future and it is to that end that I am drawn to partner with the film and movie industry in sharing my gift of music with the community at large. Because I see music as a universal language, I am inspired to use my gift of music to build bridges between diverse communities and individuals of different persuasions. In so doing, I will be able to express myself through the medium of music and do so in a way that positively impacts the global community at large.

Insofar as my future career is concerned, I see myself playing the role of a musical suspension. Suspensions are beautifully orchestrated notes in which tension is created, but is later resolved. One note of the suspension is stationary, whereas there is movement in the other note. I see myself as the latter note which is progressive and is the bridge that eliminates the tension. In this capacity, I feel that I can empower youth and our point of view by sharing my musical gifts in a way that allows the community at large to move beyond its' differences, celebrate its' shared values and press forward for the good of the whole.

There has not been a time in my life that I cannot recall hearing music and pulsating rhythms while I am awake. There are musicians on both sides of my family so I probably inherited the musical gene. Next to God and my family, I love music as I would a best friend. It is my constant companion. My aspiration is to major in Music Composition and Music Technology so that I can ultimately work in the film and movie industry. Going through my communication issues, helped me appreciate and value the importance of relationships because my parents, brother and sister were patient with me when my issues caused me to become frustrated and agitated. There were times that I went through periods of withdrawal. Seeing how my family lovingly and patiently dealt with me has caused me to extend that same courtesy to others who need it. In sum, my initial challenges put me on a journey that I now see has made me a better and stronger person and one who will be able to effectively build bridges with others. As I see it, combining my musical talents with all that I have learned and the things that I have overcome is, the key to my finding my place in a vast, diverse and demanding world in which community and strong relationships are essential to our becoming a more harmonious society. Now that I am a high school senior who has overcome my initial communication issues, I feel empowered to make the world a better place by using my artistic gifts to promote stronger communities and enlighten the world at large about the collective good that is experienced when we respect and appreciate our differences and share our talents and gifts for the good of the whole.

One thing that I realize from applying to colleges is how expensive it is to obtain a post-high school education. In addition to this, I can see how challenging it is for many college graduates to financially thrive upon obtaining a job because of the amount of debt that they accumulated to subsidize their education. As I see it, pursuing avenues that enable me to get a college education and be debt free upon doing so is the first step to making it possible for me to initiate generational wealth for myself and my future family. I would like to pursue a degree in Music Composition and Music Technology. Because my interests and talents are artistic, I understand that I may not be able to land the most lucrative job when I enter the workforce. It is in response to that possibility that I see where getting as much financial support as I can get to continue my education from this point on will put me on better footing to handle living expenses during my initial years of employment. Eliminating or reducing student debt that will come as a result of my relying primarily on student loans to subsidize my education will make it easier for me to pay my bills and save money. Hopefully, as my salary increases, my earnings and savings over time will increase my financial net worth and thereby benefit me and my future family. From my perspective, the value of generational wealth is truly realized when money and the principles behind augmenting one's net worth are passed down to successive generations. If I am blessed to have a family, I will teach them what my parents have taught me about money, investments, savings, scholarships and grants and convey what I have learned in this regard as a result of my personal experiences. By doing so, I feel that I will be giving my children the tools to finance their education and have a greater amount of liquid assets to work with when they enter the workforce. Having these tools are essential to enable our families to prosper and enjoy life to the fullest. Additionally, I feel that people are healthier when their finances allow them to take vacations, do fun things and participate in costly activities that help people reduce their level of stress and anxiety. I am grateful that my parents and others have given me a blueprint to help me navigate what lies ahead. I have a vision about launching my future aspirations and doing so in a way that will permanently benefit me. However, my vision is not just limited to me but encompasses my offspring as well. As my garden has been watered by my parents and grandparents, I intend to do the same for my offspring.

During my initial years as a child, I had a difficult time communicating with others. Thoughts were in my head, but it was a challenge for me to express myself where others could clearly understand what I was saying. This caused me to become extremely frustrated and easily agitated, and at times, I was so upset, that I completely shut down. Needless to say, I struggled with my confidence while going through this process and while I underwent speech and audio therapy. My parents and others supported me and this helped me to overcome what, at the time, was an extremely frustrating and formidable hurdle. My love for music also helped. Being a member of a musical family was an obvious plus for me because the natural ability that I have to hear and compose music and play multiple instruments built my confidence in ways that I could not have otherwise imagined. What I discovered was that I was able to communicate in ways other than through speech. For me, music was the key that unlocked the door and allowed me to focus on my strengths rather than my weaknesses. In time, my ability to put my thoughts into words that others could clearly understand improved, and I no longer feel uncomfortable when I am put in a position in which I have to do public speaking. Now that I am a high school senior who has successfully overcome my earlier challenges, I realize how patience, persistence and music helped me to get to the point where I have no reservations about my communication skills and I am confident that I will succeed in my future endeavors as a composer and musical tech guru. Going through what I went through as a child has helped me appreciate the value and importance of relationships because my parents, brother and sister were patient with me when I went through my withdrawal periods. Seeing how they lovingly and patiently dealt with me has caused me to extend that same courtesy to others who need it. In sum, my initial challenges put me on a journey that I now see has made me a better and stronger person and one who will be able to successfully build bridges with others. As I see it, combining my musical talents with all that I have learned and the things that I have overcome is the key to my finding my place in a vast, diverse and demanding world in which community and strong relationships are essential to promoting individual and collective success.

The COVID pandemic started me on a personal journey that has enabled me to see and appreciate the unique musical gifts that I have. I have loved music from as far back as I can remember, and I have been told stories about how I often caused a stir in restaurants because I treated the plates as drums and silverware as drumsticks. There has not been a time in my life that I cannot recall hearing music and pulsating rhythms while I am awake. At the outset of the pandemic, while many were hunkered down trying to find something to do, I allowed myself to become immersed in music. Not only did I not experience boredom during those months, but I started seriously composing music and testing my skills at producing music electronically. In the past year, and beyond that, I assisted my father in preparing music for virtual church services. He is the Minister of Music at our church. When the pandemic started, my father initially struggled with preparing music for virtual services because he was not comfortable with music technology or anything that involved producing and presenting music electronically. It was uplifting for me to see that I had the tools to assist my father and insure that our congregation could hear and enjoy beautiful music while our in-person services were suspended. Additionally, my father and I were able to collaborate on a few “special” pieces which enabled me to see and appreciate the value of partnership in executing a project. This, undoubtedly, was a great training opportunity that will equip me to work with other talented individuals in future projects. My father can ask tons of questions and he is easily rattled by things that are outside of his comfort zone. Working with him during the pandemic, and particularly during the past year or so, has taught me patience that I did not possess years ago. Moreover, I am no longer unclear about my value in the world because my musical collaborative experience with my father has demonstrated that I am not only a valuable human being, but I am now more confident about my ability to share my gifts so I can change and illuminate the world in an artistic way. What has not changed is my love for my parents. They have nurtured me and encouraged me to develop and use my musical gifts to make the community at large a happier place. That objective for me has not changed and will continue to be my goal post in life. Without my parents and their support, I would undoubtedly be somewhere close to ground zero, so I am appreciative of all that they have done to get me on the right track.
