Trudgers Fund
Hello Trudgers Fund,
My name is Vincent Massi. Growing up surrounded by alcoholism within my family, addiction has been a haunting presence throughout my life. Despite my initial commitment to staying away from substances, the loneliness and depression I experienced during my senior year of high school led me down a dark path. I somehow found myself seeking solace in alcohol and drugs, desperate to numb the pain of isolation.
Each day felt like a descent into deeper despair as I drifted further from my writing, acting, and comedy aspirations. The once-promising path I had envisioned seemed to vanish amidst the haze of substance abuse. Despite knowing the destructive nature of my actions, I felt powerless to break free from the cycle of addiction. This sent me into an even deeper depression because if I couldn’t do the one thing that made me so happy then I was lost.
However, amidst the chaos, a flicker of hope remained. Drawing on that passion for writing, and comedy, I made a pivotal decision to reclaim control of my life. With quite a bit of hesitation and no idea how to do this, I severed ties with toxic influences. This made me completely alone again. I would spend most days completely alone from morning until 6-7 pm. My parents were divorced when I was 10 and I was living with my dad. As a single father, he worked all day to provide for us so I didn’t get to be around anyone much the latter half of my senior year.
The following weeks I was braving the agonizing withdrawals as I embarked on the tough journey of becoming sober. Though I was able to kick many of the new addictions I succumbed to that year I still had alcohol lingering and it wasn’t helpful that a lot of going to college in America turned out to be drinking. By the age of 23, I confronted that challenge. Now, armed with the lessons learned from my past struggles, I confronted my addiction head-on, refusing to let it dictate my future and I won.
Life being sober is always and has always been better than hiding from any problems in my life. Being sober has helped me regain my confidence that I matter and can contribute to this community.
Now, as I embark on my journey to become a therapist, I am grateful for the opportunity to transform my experiences into a source of healing for others. Guided by empathy and fueled by a deep-seated purpose, I am determined to provide support and guidance to those battling addiction, depression, loneliness, anxiety, etc… drawing upon both personal insight and the technical expertise gained through my education.
In every interaction, I am reminded of what I believe to be my calling to offer hope and encouragement to those navigating the rough waters of addiction. With each step forward, I am one step closer to fulfilling my purpose and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Thank you for reading my essay and considering me.
