Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent household with my mother has been a journey defined by resilience, love, and a profound respect for all living creatures. My mother immigrated from Vietnam in 2004, carrying me in her womb, with the single-minded goal of building a better life for us. She made a living as a seamstress, working countless extra shifts and hours, and eventually opening her own small tailoring shop after the pandemic. Her dedication and unwavering work ethic have been a constant source of inspiration to me to this day–an incredible demonstration of the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
One of the most enduring lessons my mother has taught me, beyond the power of hard work, is the importance of compassion—not just for people, but for all living beings. She has always had a heart for the vulnerable, often taking in strays and caring for them with unwavering love and care. One particular memory stands out: the time we discovered a mouse scurrying through her shop. While I was too squeamish to go anywhere near it, I remember how my mother was able to calmly and gently lure the mouse into a metal crate. What followed was a 40-minute drive to a nearby forested area outside of town, where she released the mouse back into the wild. She even tried to play some music in the car, explaining that she wanted to ensure the mouse could trust her and knew it was safe. At the time, I thought it was incredibly ridiculous and funny, but looking back, I realize how much that moment reflected her kindness and respect for life. She taught me that every living being deserves compassion and respect, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. This experience, among countless others, played a pivotal role in shaping my own love and fascination for animals, ultimately leading me to pursue a degree in Wildlife Ecology.
My future goals are inextricably linked to the values my mother instilled in me. I aspire to use my talents to protect and preserve the natural world, particularly avian species, which hold a special place in my heart. While I may not know the precise path my career will take, I envision a future where I contribute meaningfully to conservation efforts. Whether through conducting field research, developing sustainable habitat management strategies, or educating the public about the importance of biodiversity, I want to be a voice for the voiceless. I want to emulate my mother's unwavering dedication and compassion, using my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on the animal world.
I hope to be able to give back to the world, just as my mother has given so much to me. I want to use my education to advocate for environmental sustainability and to promote a greater understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things. Just as my mother's small act of kindness towards a mouse left a lasting impression on me, I hope to inspire others to recognize the inherent value of every creature and to embrace a more compassionate and sustainable way of life. This scholarship would be a significant step towards achieving these goals, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and contribute to a future where both humans and animals can thrive.

Life often has a way of leading us down unexpected paths, and sometimes those paths are forged from our own personal struggles. Within the depths of my own struggles with depression during my high school years, and having to witness firsthand the effects of untreated mental health conditions within my own community, I discovered a determination to transform pain into purpose. Through my own personal experience and experiences of family members and close friends suffering from untreated or undiagnosed conditions such as ADHD, depression, and bipolar disorder, I saw firsthand the need for compassionate care and support in the mental healthcare field. Driven by empathy and a desire to make a difference, I have set my sights on a career in psychiatry. By dedicating my life to this field, I aim to provide resources, solace, and unwavering support to individuals grappling with mental illness and health, reminding them that they are not alone on their journey.
My own struggles with depression have shaped my perspective and cultivated an unwavering determination in my education in the field of mental healthcare and medicine. The severe isolation and hopelessness I experienced during this time has given me insight on the power of empathy and the significance of genuine compassion for others. My desire to offer aid and understanding to others in need, coupled with my passion for science and psychology, has fueled my commitment to pursuing a career in the medical field with a focus in psychiatry.
As a future psychiatrist, my goal is to make a tangible difference in the lives of those suffering from mental illness. I envision a world where individuals grappling with mental health challenges are met with unwavering empathy and access to quality care. I believe that prioritizing mental health and providing easier accessibility to necessary medication without the stigma surrounding mental illness is the key stepping stone to improving the quality of life for all individuals in need. Throughout my career, I plan to advocate for improved mental health resources, raise awareness on the importance of destigmatizing mental illnesses, and develop more innovative approaches to treatment that address the holistic well-being of patients.
The profound impact of my journey and the struggles endured by my family have inspired me to pursue a career in psychiatry. I aspire to aid those who have also felt overwhelmed and isolated by their own mental illness.
