    Young Women in STEM Scholarship
I am what some people would call a slasher; someone who can fit into many things, has diverse skillsets and can even be called a jack of all trades. However, I was not always this way, the hardships of life made me so and I am thankful for that. Oh, wait! If I am being honest, I do not think it was only because of my circumstances. My mind is like this, I want to do many things, be many things and make an impact across diverse spheres of work. You can say my mind is divergent. Hence, my circumstances just proved who I am. Like my mind, I am motivated by many things; from the desire to not see people suffer in sickness, to the desire to bring people out of poverty, to even the desire for people to enjoy the mundane things of life. The thing is, I grew up as the second child of 6 from my mother in a physically abusive home. From the young age of 7, I had to play the intermediary role between my parents when they fought. Eventually, I was mentally strong enough and visibly stubborn enough to defend my mother in all these. This made me develop a “saviour complex” where I want to help everyone in need. Combining this “complex” with my divergent mind brings out a beautiful expression of me; someone who would do her best with the resources she has to improve the lives of others. It is with this approach; that I go about my life. Yet, I have not been able to do much. From trying first to save myself and my immediate family, I have explored several career choices. Now, some people know me as a real estate agent, others as a philanthropist, an advocate for education, some as a food enthusiast, some as a graphic/web designer, and some as a data analyst. In all my career explorations, one thing that has stood out to me is that I cannot be everything at once and I cannot spread myself too thin. Hence, I decided to pick a career path that not only feeds my diverse mind but also equips me with the necessary resources and allows me to make an impact in as many areas as possible. My dream is to become an artificial intelligence engineer. With it, I can build products that increase access to education for the disabled and underprivileged, improve agricultural productivity and ensure food security, give people the opportunity to enjoy experiences using technology that they would not normally have the opportunity to, build tools that can help in the early detection of auto-immune diseases, connect people beyond language barriers and cultural differences. With it, I can do many things and impact many areas of the human experience. I would not need to be a professional in that field. I can simply collaborate with others using my skillset and this excites me. My biggest challenge has been financial. So far, I have not had enough resources to pursue the kind of education to move me forward in life and enable pursue my dreams. I currently do not have a bachelor's degree and while I would have been able to access a stable employment opportunity, I currently cannot as in my country, there is an ongoing unemployment crisis where over 50% of young people are either unemployed or underemployed. Therefore, priority is given to people who have bachelor’s degrees or higher. My approach to overcoming this is to ensure I put my best foot forward. I have taken free online courses in tech and have earned certificates for some. Since I have a dream of global impact, I began learning foreign languages and have reached an intermediate level in Brazilian Portuguese and a basic proficiency in Mandarin. Through online courses, I have earned some college credits which earned me a spot to begin my studies from year 2 at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), one of the prestigious international universities in China this September. Upon graduation, I would earn a bachelor's degree in Data Science and Big Data Technology from both XJTLU and the University of Liverpool, UK. But I still need help. It is commonly said, “You can take a horse to the river but you cannot force it to drink water.” Yet, I am like a horse standing on the river banks trying to drink but my neck is broken so I cannot drink without support. I say this because with all my dreams and aspirations, regardless of how much effort I am willing to put in, I cannot do much without finances but I have decided to go forward. Go forward towards my dreams, go forward towards possibilities and, go forward towards a supportive environment. I am going forward towards my dreams but I need a horseman to feed me water. I hope the Young Women in STEM scholarship can be that horseman, supporting me as I take bold steps towards my future. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my dreams with you and I thank you sincerely for your consideration. With great hope, I look forward to the possibility of being awarded this scholarship. Thank you.
