My name is Victor Onwuama, and my current SMART goal is to graduate with a Bachelor's in Science in Nursing with Summa Cum Laude at the University of Texas in Arlington. My long-term objective is to enroll in a medical school to become a doctor.
I moved to the United States in 2019, and being from a developing country, the opportunities here are endless. I have learned to take advantage of every opportunity that I come across. So many people have doubted me, but I keep proving them wrong; however, my parents have always supported me. I want to be a nurse who provides quality patient care, inspires people with my story, and is financially stable to help and possibly retire my parents. Finance is an enormous burden for higher institutions, and I would love to lift some of it from my parents because they made sure I never lacked anything, even if they were struggling.

Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship
Before delving into this scholarship’s details, I want to introduce myself. My name is Victor Onwuama, and I am a proud citizen of Nigeria by birth. As a proud member of the Igbo cultural group, I am specifically from the Nwangele local government area in Imo State, Owerri. Still, I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. I and my family recently moved to the United States in April 2019. This move took a toll on my mental health; trying to fit in was already so difficult, then the COVID-19 pandemic emerged the following year, and social distancing increased the difficulty of my solution. Being a first-generation African immigrant was strenuous in high school because I didn’t know anything about the education system in the United States, which made me miss out on a bunch of scholarships for college. I‘ve always felt like I was behind my peers because I didn’t necessarily understand the system but I still kept striving in my education. Fast forward to 2024, and I have completed my first year of college at the University of Texas at Arlington with a 4.0 academic GPA while majoring in nursing as a pre-med for medical school. For the first time since moving to the U.S., I finally feel like I’m ahead of my peers.
I enjoy participating in various community projects. I joined the Red Cross to provide emergency relief such as water, sanitation, and food to underserved communities in Nigeria. I also participated in Freerice, an educational trivia game that boosts your knowledge while making a global impact. For every correct answer, 10 grains of rice are donated to the World Food Programme, helping to support their mission of saving and improving lives worldwide. As of now, I am currently a member of the University of Texas at Arlington African Student Organization (UTAASO). Our organization provides highly enriched, inclusive education about the cultural heritage of Africa. We also participate in community service projects like food drives, etc.
As a first-generation African immigrant, my heritage has extensively shaped my values, goals, and resolve. Being from a place with little to no opportunity, I have learned to capitalize on every chance I get to change the condition of my situation. My culture’s strong emphasis on education and hard work has driven me to excel academically. My parents are also a major part of my drive to succeed, my ultimate goal in life is to retire them in the future. To tell my parents that they don’t have to work anymore keeps me going. I plan to go home to give back to my secondary school, Royal Kriston College and appreciate them for my educational upbringing. I also want to inspire people at my school in Nigeria and other first-generation African immigrants, showing them that through hard work, determination, and God, you can achieve anything you set your mind to, irrespective of external doubts. Receiving the Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship would be monumental, as it would mark the first-ever outside scholarship I have received, and I deeply resonate with the scholarship’s topic. It will help me with summer school, which I am currently struggling to make ends meet on some payments for some courses over the summer, and this scholarship can potentially help me alleviate the struggle.
In conclusion, as a first-generation African immigrant, I am willing to work hard to ensure generational wealth for my family and help contribute to underserved communities. Receiving this scholarship will ease my current financial stress and keep me on track to graduate.
Thank you for considering my scholarship application!

If I said I didn’t have to overcome multiple challenges during my four years of high school, I’d be lying to myself. High school had a lot of meaning for different people. Still, I specifically define high school as a roller coaster of emotions that prepares you for the outside world, both educationally and emotionally.
I moved to the U.S. a few months before my first year of high school. Trying to cope with a new environment was very difficult at the time, but somehow I managed to survive. I was nervous on my first day of high school, but when I got to school, I experienced something completely different; it was nothing compared to my home country of Nigeria. I cherished every aspect of it until I realized that the most dreadful experience is not solitude but being in the company of people who make you feel isolated. I had no one to sit with during lunch, although we were all freshmen; people had already made their bonds during the orientation, which I did not attend, and I felt singled out. I had no friends, and it took a heavy toll on my emotions. Is this the new normal? Will I ever have people to call friends? Will I be very lonely till the end of high school? I felt out of place and like I did not belong. This realization made me homesick because it was extremely easy to socialize at home, and I just didn’t know how to make friends because I was shy. After weeks of loneliness and silent depression, I came across a kind-hearted individual; although he left the U.S. for his home country after 9th grade, he holds a special place in my heart.
During one of our classes, he approached me. Initially, I thought I was about to get bullied because of my quiet nature, but he was nice; he offered me help on one of the assignments I was having difficulties with; we talked, and he exchanged numbers with me. After this exchange, my heart leaped for joy. I felt like I had finally found someone I could relate to and have fun with, but I was also defensive because the encounter seemed skeptical. Days later, I said to him, “Why did you decide to sit with me that day?” He said that when I first came to the United States, someone did that for me, and this is my way of returning the favor. It felt like a massive load of loneliness was taken off my chest, and I finally felt at home for the first time in five months. Some months passed by, and we became very close friends. He invited me to play soccer with him, and we also went shopping a few times together. Time for a new project group in 9th grade had approached, and I got placed with him and two other strangers. We grew together as a group and as friends, and we laughed, conversed, and got our work done on time. Everything was good until the day of our project exhibition. Schools were going out for spring break, and we never got to return in person for a long time because of the pandemic. I consider that day to be a noteworthy moment, as it was the last time I could see him before he departed for his home country.
Now, we’re all at different colleges in the U.S., pursuing our aspirations. I’m very grateful to meet them because, through their help, I was able to overcome loneliness, homesickness, and depression.
Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
There are multiple majors to choose from in college, but I decided to major in nursing. Why did I do this? In this essay, I’ll provide an in-depth description explaining why I selected to major in nursing.
Firstly, I am very passionate about science, especially health sciences. My long-term goal is to eventually enroll in a medical school after I have my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The health science field is so spectacular to me, and I am intrigued to learn more about it. As a field of study, nursing and medicine are two of the hardest majors. The rigorous nature of this field drives me to select this major and challenge myself with something I love learning. Secondly, I enjoy helping people in one way or another, and this nursing field allows me to attend to the needs of others with a smile on my face. Whether it's volunteering for the greater good, providing emotional support to friends going through difficult times, or assisting peers with assignments, helping people is just something I love doing. Nursing allows me to be able to showcase that side of me. Nursing gives me a chance to help people when they're going through tough times. The idea of being there for others when they're sick or feeling low connects with what I care about and want to achieve.
Additionally, I'm attracted to nursing because it's always evolving, and I value the idea of continually learning. The opportunity to gain a variety of skills, stay updated on medical advancements, and embrace ongoing learning resonates with my belief in personal and professional development. Nursing provides a platform where being adaptable and having a curiosity for knowledge is not just welcomed but crucial. Lastly, I chose nursing as a major in hopes of achieving the American dream. In this context, I want to be an exemplary figure for people who come from a struggling background and eventually retire my parents. Retiring my parents has been a lifelong goal of mine, and I want to attain that goal by doing something I enjoy doing.
In conclusion, I am pursuing nursing as a career because I want to make a difference in the lives of my patients and immediate family. I want to be able to help my patients with their situations, make myself proud, and retire my parents. I want to show other people out there that you can be anything you want, regardless of doubts. If you have confidence in yourself and stay determined, there's no limit to what you can achieve.

My academic journey, currently in its second semester at the University of Texas at Arlington, is characterized by a dedication to healthcare. Joseph Joshua Searor Memorial Scholarship
My time in college has been pretty cool, and I'm now in my second semester at the University of Texas at Arlington. In this essay, I'll talk about how I got here, including changing my mind about what I want to do, dealing with challenges, and the moment that made me want to be a nurse.
Moving from my home country of Nigeria to the U.S. in my first year of high school made my high school experience a little bit complicated, especially with the pandemic making everything more difficult. I felt behind my peers throughout high school, and the final semester displayed my condition. Being the first in my immediate family to attend a 4-year college in the U.S., my last semester of high school was a mess. I didn’t know what to do, so I didn't apply for things on time, like FAFSA, scholarships, and college housing. As of now, in 2024, I'm feeling more on top of things. I've got my housing for the next academic year situated, I completed my FAFSA form on time, and I know what classes I need to take to get my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). I'm also getting ready for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) for entrance into upper-division nursing school. I also know that I will have to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) to gain admission to medical school after I graduate with my BSN degree. I've set a SMART goal to earn my BSN with summa cum laude distinction, and I'm well on my way to achieving it.
As for career changes, I don’t have any record of changing my major. I've always wanted to do something in healthcare, and the only significant change happened in late 2023 when I decided I didn't just want to stop at nursing—I wanted to be a doctor. Right now, I'm using my nursing major as a pre-med to get into medical school, and I plan to take the MCAT and attain a master's degree after I graduate.
The reason I got into nursing was simple: I like helping people. I enjoy volunteering to assist those in need; this correlates with healthcare, which is all about taking care of patients. It's a complex field, and I appreciate the challenges it brings. I want to prove that if you set your mind to something, you can achieve it, no matter what people say. My parents are a source of inspiration for me, and my ultimate aim is to ensure they retire comfortably and enjoy the life they deserve
In conclusion, nursing is just a stepping stone for me. I'm doing well, and I want to make my family proud. It's not just about me doing well; it's about showing that if you put in the effort and don't quit, you can make things happen.
Romeo Nursing Scholarship
A vital part of the healthcare system is played by the noble and important profession of nursing. It is a career that is motivated by compassion, commitment, and the desire to help and soothe individuals who are in need. The importance of nursing is discussed in this article, along with the significant effects nurses have on people's lives, families, and society at large. I chose nursing because I want to help to broaden health care systems and facilities to developing countries and to minimize the number of lives lost due to inadequate health care facilities & professionals. Growing up in my home country of Nigeria, I discovered that there are numerous health care facilities that do not meet the needs of sick individual which would in turn lead to death.
Nursing is really about providing people with healing and caring care. On the front lines, nurses provide patients with comfort and support directly, especially when they are at their most vulnerable. Their capacity for compassion, understanding, and listening to patients' needs builds a therapeutic alliance that aids in both physical and emotional recovery. The rights and wellbeing of their patients are safeguarded thanks to the advocacy provided by nurses. They serve as a point of contact for patients and medical professionals, enabling them to make well-informed decisions about their available treatment options. For groups who are disadvantaged or at risk of not having access to care, advocacy is especially important. I also plan the diversify the nursing workforce and break stereotypes involved with nursing. Although nursing has traditionally been a female-dominated profession, this is quickly changing as more males enter the industry. The number of male nurses has increased recently, shattering preconceptions and making a good contribution to the healthcare sector.
Nursing has always been seen as a female-dominated field. The workforce becomes more varied and representative of society as a whole by encouraging more males to become nurses. Diverse perspectives, experiences, and abilities are brought to the nursing profession via diversity, which ultimately improves patient care. In order to facilitate communication and treatment, male nurses can relate to male patients on a different level. A growing older population and improvements in medical technology are driving up the demand for healthcare services. The healthcare sector needs a greater nurse staff to meet this demand. By embracing male nurses, healthcare institutions may ensure that all patients receive high-quality treatment despite a shortage of nurses.
Being a nurse is a very essential and fulfilling career. The core of healthcare is the nurse, who provides healing, knowledge, and compassion to people in need. Their patient-professional communication skills, preventative care initiatives, and advocacy work all contribute to better healthcare outcomes. Nurses have a profound effect on people's lives and the health of society as a whole as frontline caregivers and crucial members of healthcare teams. Nursing is a valued and precious career because of its passion to helping others and commitment to human welfare.
