Bio

Being a single parent has profoundly shaped my educational journey, teaching me resilience and the importance of perseverance. As a single mom of two, I’ve balanced raising my children with a 20-year career as a nail technician, during which I’ve listened to and understood the challenges faced by mostly women in my community. This experience inspired me to pursue a career as an attorney, focusing on protecting human and civil rights, especially for individuals with disabilities. I hope to give back to the community and the country by advocating for those who feel unheard, ensuring equal opportunities, and making a lasting impact on the lives of those in need.

The Case That Changed Me I did not grow up thinking I’d be a lawyer. I was a single mother, working full-time as a nail technician to support my children and navigate life with an invisible disability. But everything changed the day I came across the Supreme Court case Olmstead v. L.C., a 1999 decision that affirmed the rights of people with disabilities to live within their communities rather than being institutionalized. That case didn’t just shift my perspective—it called me to action. Before discovering Olmstead, I knew firsthand how difficult it was to navigate systems that weren’t built for people like me or my child, who also has a disability. I had experienced the gaps in education, housing, and health care, but I hadn’t yet seen how the legal system could be used as a tool to dismantle those barriers. Olmstead opened my eyes to what’s possible when the law is used not as a weapon of exclusion but as a mechanism for justice and dignity. That case gave me a new vision for my life. I realized that the best way I could advocate for my family—and for countless others—was to become an attorney who fought for civil rights, particularly for people with disabilities and other marginalized communities. Since then, I’ve committed myself to pursuing law not just as a degree but as a mission. As a low-income student, the journey hasn’t been easy. I am currently putting myself through school while continuing to raise my children, and every dollar counts. But I also know that I carry with me something powerful: lived experience. I know what it means to be overlooked and unheard. I also know the strength it takes to rise anyway. What struck me most about TJ Crowson’s legacy was that he used his education to help open doors for others. His values—honesty, care, and a drive to always do the right thing—mirror the very reasons I want to practice law. I don’t want to chase prestige; I want to create impact. I want to be the lawyer who shows up for families like mine. The lawyer who sees people not just as cases but as human beings. Receiving this scholarship would not only ease the financial strain of continuing my education; it would also carry deep personal meaning. It would be a reminder that I’m not walking this path alone—that someone believes in my future and in the power of representation, just as TJ did. Olmstead v. L.C. taught me that change is possible and that the law can be a force for good. It lit the spark. But it’s support like this scholarship that keeps that spark burning when things get hard. Thank you for considering my application and for honoring TJ’s legacy in a way that uplifts others.

My name is Vanessa Rivera, a single mother of two, a nail technician with over 20 years of experience, and an aspiring attorney. My journey has been shaped by resilience and commitment to my family and community. As a proud Hispanic woman, I draw strength from my heritage and the values of hard work and compassion that it instilled in me. Balancing the roles of mother, professional, and student has taught me the importance of determination and adaptability, qualities that have prepared me to succeed in my pursuit of higher education and a career in law. This scholarship would be a transformative opportunity for me and my family. As a single parent, financial challenges often make pursuing higher education daunting. This support would alleviate the financial burden that comes with education and related expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and less on the financial strain of achieving my goals. More importantly, this scholarship would empower me to pursue my dream of becoming an attorney dedicated to protecting human and civil rights, particularly for individuals with disabilities. By investing in my education, this scholarship is also an investment in the communities I hope to serve. My academic and career goals are intertwined with my passion for advocacy and justice. I am pursuing a law degree with the means of addressing systemic inequities and creating meaningful change for marginalized populations. My focus is on advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunities for all. In my role as a nail technician, I have seen the challenges faced by women in my community and have been inspired to listen, learn, and act. I aim to use my legal education to become a voice for the voiceless and fight for a more inclusive and equitable society. Throughout my life, I have prioritized contributing to my community. As a nail technician, I have served as a supporter for many women, providing a safe space where they feel heard and valued. I have also volunteered my time mentoring young women in my community, encouraging them to pursue their goals despite challenges. Additionally, I have advocated for individuals with disabilities, raising awareness about their rights and the barriers they face. These experiences have reinforced my desire to give back in more impactful ways. One of the most significant lessons I have learned came from a time when I failed to meet a professional deadline due to overcommitting myself. I wanted to excel in every aspect of my life but underestimated the importance of setting realistic boundaries. This failure taught me the value of prioritization. Since then, I have developed strategies to balance my responsibilities, allowing me to meet challenges with clarity and purpose. My greatest strengths include my resilience, empathy, and creativity. Resilience has been my guiding force, allowing me to overcome challenges while remaining focused on my goals. My empathy enables me to connect with others, understand their struggles, and advocate for their needs effectively. Lastly, my creativity has allowed me to find innovative solutions to problems, whether in my personal, professional, or academic life. These strengths, combined with my determination, continue to drive my success as I work toward my future. My experiences have shaped my determination to make a difference. This scholarship would provide the financial support necessary to pursue my dreams while allowing me to focus on the bigger picture: creating a lasting impact as an advocate for justice and equality. Growing up as a proud member of the Puerto Rican community has been both a source of strength and a journey through unique challenges. My Puerto Rican heritage has instilled in me an unwavering sense of resilience, a deep appreciation for family, and a commitment to uplifting those around me. These values have shaped my aspirations and my identity, propelling me toward a career in law. As a single mother of two, I have drawn on these lessons to persevere through barriers to education and opportunity, and I am determined to use my experiences to advocate for justice, particularly for marginalized communities. One of the most significant challenges I have faced as a member of the Puerto Rican community is navigating systemic barriers in education. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how limited access to resources, financial hardship, and cultural stereotypes could diminish opportunities for success. Despite these obstacles, my family taught me to view education as a pathway to empowerment. However, balancing my educational pursuits with the demands of being a single mother and working full-time as a nail technician required sacrifices that tested my resilience. These experiences taught me how to adapt, prioritize, and persevere—skills that will undoubtedly serve me in my legal career. My Puerto Rican heritage has also been a constant source of inspiration. The vibrant culture, strong sense of community, and legacy of resilience have reinforced my desire to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the legal field. As a future legal professional, I aim to challenge systemic inequities and create pathways for individuals who face barriers similar to those I have overcome. My goal is to work toward dismantling structures that perpetuate discrimination and inequality, particularly for people with disabilities and other underserved groups. I believe that promoting diverse voices and perspectives within the legal system is critical to achieving justice for all. The legacy of individuals like Jesus Perez serves as a guiding light in my journey. His tireless dedication to civil rights and the Puerto Rican community inspires me to honor those who came before me by giving back in meaningful ways. Through my legal career, I hope to serve as a bridge between the Puerto Rican community and the justice system, ensuring that the voices of our people are heard and respected. Whether it involves advocating for policy changes, providing pro bono legal assistance, or mentoring the next generation of Puerto Rican leaders, I am committed to making a lasting impact. As I pursue this path, I also plan to remain deeply connected to my roots. The experiences and stories of many Puerto Rican women I’ve encountered in my 20 years as a nail technician have provided me with invaluable insight into the challenges faced by many in our community. These conversations have fueled my desire to create systemic change and serve as an advocate for those who feel silenced or overlooked. By channeling my heritage, experiences, and professional aspirations into my work as an attorney, I hope to honor the resilience of my community and contribute to a more equitable future. In conclusion, my Puerto Rican heritage has been a cornerstone of my identity, shaping my values and aspirations and fueling my determination to overcome barriers. As a future attorney, I envision using my legal expertise to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the legal field while also empowering the Puerto Rican community. By honoring the legacy of individuals like Jesus Perez and serving as a voice for the underserved, I hope to leave a meaningful legacy of my own.
