My family came to the United States in April 2017 after living in Malaysia for more than five years. It was extremely tough for me since our education systems are so opposite and I barely understood English. I usually looked up my assignments word by word in Chin, I spent more time than other students. I was embarrassed to read aloud because of my pronunciation. I spent my time catching up on my words, as it took me a long time to find the definition. I'm often embarrassed because it makes me feel dumb in front of the other kids in class. Not only do I struggle with English, but many people compare me to my classmates, some of whom have been studying here since they were as young as seven years old. I try not to be affected by it, but it hurts deeply. Along the way, I experienced doubt in myself despite my efforts to have a positive mindset. Being unable to communicate in English will be one of the most challenging aspects of my life because I want to comprehend what I have learned in class, but I often do not understand the question. I'd like to be able to have a conversation and ask questions like other students, but I've lost my confidence. Bypassing my quizzes and tests, I want to show my teachers that they did an excellent job educating me, yet there were times when I didn't even understand what the question was asking. I'd be lying if I said I'm fluent in English today, but I do know it's better than it was before, especially in terms of pronunciation, grammar, and essay writing. By not giving up, I've witnessed myself grow into a brighter student who isn't afraid to make the right choice, and I've noticed a significant improvement in all of my classes. I've seen a significant improvement in my report card, which makes me quite happy. Even in the future, I aspire to work even harder and with even more passion than I do today. And as a teenager, I have reflected on this question many times in my life, “ Where do you see yourself in five years?” Five years from now I will be twenty-three. By the age of twenty-three, I can see myself as being fulfilled with my school and I will have earned at least my Bachelor’s degree in social work. I hope to be a great woman serving other people, inspiring others by taking action, and making a difference in my community by finding resources and reaching out to others through organizations/ people I know. and also a happy, successful woman who has accomplished more than half of my bucket list. If it has not been accomplished, I will strive to achieve those goals. I've always enjoyed assisting others in whatever ways I can as a kid. Not only for their own sakes but also for mine, to live more meaningful lives! I also want to see myself more responsible, gaining skills and knowledge in the industry of my work.
