I am currently studying computer science at Texas Southern University, an HBCU deeply rooted in Houston's diverse community. Growing up in the small town of Port Arthur, Texas, my early years were shaped by the halls of a tiny Catholic school where there were only 12 kids in my entire fifth-grade class. However, my life took a major turn when my mother, a single parent without a college degree, worked tirelessly to earn her bachelor's degree, leading us to the busy Dallas, Texas area.
Among the overwhelming crowds and unfamiliar faces in larger schools, I dealt with social phobia and massive depressive disorder. The challenges intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, making my sense of isolation worse and pushing me to a very dark place. During this chaos, I found peace in my love for computer science and coding, which blossomed despite my struggles.
With support from my mother and the determination to overcome adversities, I managed to graduate from high school in 2023. My mother made sure I got the mental health support I needed, even when I didn’t want to. Currently enrolled in the computer science program at Texas Southern University, I earned a coveted spot in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participants scholar program, a recognition of my excellence in science and math. This opportunity has shaped my aspirations and understanding of the world.
My experiences have instilled in me a sense of empathy and compassion, especially recognizing the silent battles faced by individuals, particularly within the Black community. I am deeply committed to raising awareness about mental health issues and breaking the stigma that shrouds these discussions. My goal is to utilize my computer science degree to bridge the gap in mental health support, particularly in marginalized communities.
I envision developing online programs tailored to the unique needs of those with mental health issues, offering accessible resources, counseling, and support. Through my work, I aim to create a safe space where individuals can openly discuss their mental health challenges without fear of judgment, fostering a sense of community and understanding. My personal struggles have taught me the importance of understanding, patience, and unconditional support, values that I intend to incorporate into my future initiatives.
In conclusion, my journey through mental health challenges has transformed my aspirations, relationships, and worldview. With my education in computer science, I aspire to inspire others to seek help, foster understanding, and contribute to a world where mental health is met with compassion, support, and acceptance. I am determined to make a significant difference, advocating for mental health awareness and creating a world where everyone can thrive, regardless of their struggles, and where communities are empowered to support one another.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
“I don’t think I want to live anymore.” Those were the words I spoke to my mother just two years ago. What happened next gave me focus, determination and a will to not just live – but thrive.
Growing up in the close-knit community of Port Arthur, Texas, I loved the feeling of my small Catholic school, where everyone knew each other. However, life took a drastic turn when my family moved to the Dallas, Texas area where I found myself lost among hundreds of unfamiliar faces. The transition to larger schools marked the onset of my struggle with social phobia and massive depressive disorder. The overwhelming crowds intensified my feelings of isolation, and when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, my sense of disconnection from the world deepened.
Amidst the chaos, I sought solace in food and computers, leading to weight gain and further exacerbating my anxiety but also the joy of computer science and coding. Returning to school became an everyday challenge, and I found myself grappling with suicidal thoughts. Recognizing my distress, seeing my grades plummet and watching me show no joy in any of the activities that used to make me smile - my mother intervened, forcing me to seek the help I desperately needed. She offered only support and no judgment at all. She offered me love and hope instead of second-guessing why I felt this depression. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of my journey toward mental health recovery and empathy.
Despite my struggles, I managed to graduate from high school in 2023, a testament to not just my resilience – but my support system as well. I fully recognize that not everyone has the gift or privilege of a support system or the feeling of security to open up to those around them about mental health.
While I had a low GPA, I was still accepted into Texas Southern University - an HBCU in Houston, Texas - where I am studying computer science. Attending a summer computer camp, I caught the eye of STEM leadership, earning a coveted spot in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participants scholar program. My experiences with mental health challenges have profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. Through professional help and my mother’s support, I realize now I can face anything.
My journey through mental health struggles has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and compassion. It has sensitized me to the silent battles many individuals face and are ashamed of, particularly within the Black community. This newfound empathy has fueled my determination to raise awareness about mental health issues, working diligently to break the stigma that often surrounds mental health discussions, especially within communities of color.
In my relationships, I have learned the importance of understanding, patience, and unconditional support. My personal struggles have taught me to appreciate the power of a listening ear and a compassionate heart. Through my interactions with others, I strive to create a safe space where people can openly discuss their mental health challenges without fear of judgment, fostering a sense of community and understanding.
My understanding of the world has been profoundly shaped by my experiences. I have come to realize that mental health issues do not discriminate based on race, socioeconomic status, or background. I am driven to use my computer science degree to bridge the gap in mental health support, particularly in marginalized communities. My goal is to develop online programs tailored to the unique needs of the Black community, offering accessible resources, counseling, and support.
In conclusion, my journey through mental health challenges has transformed my aspirations, relationships, and worldview. The Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship represents an opportunity for me to further my mission, breaking barriers, and advocating for mental health awareness, particularly within the Black community. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to seek help, foster understanding, and create a world where mental health is met with compassion, support, and acceptance.

Windward Spirit Scholarship
In the labyrinth of history, each generation faces its unique challenges, each era having its own heroes. The narrative of our times is outlined with the voices of Millennials and Gen Z, an eclectic combination of hopes, dreams, and unyielding determination. As we stand on the height of a rendezvous with destiny, the voices of the past merge with the vibrant energy of the present, creating a tapestry of resilience and aspiration.
President Franklin Roosevelt's words resonate across the ages, a reminder of the indomitable spirit of what is often called The Greatest Generation. I learned in my history classes about their journey through the Great Depression and World War II. These difficulties forged them into supporters of resilience, embracing their destiny with unwavering dedication. In the same breath, Tom Brokaw immortalized their legacy as "The Greatest Generation," a testament to their courage and sacrifice.
Millennials and Gen Z now stand in the shadows of history, ready to inherit a world marked by economic uncertainties and environmental crises. From climate change to threats to social security, we are entrusted with a planet teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, facing challenges ranging from the burden of insurmountable student loans to the complexities of a flawed healthcare system. The call of duty resonates in our hearts, pushing us to tackle these challenges head-on.
Our journey mirrors that of The Greatest Generation, just in a different context. Much like them, we confront economic adversities, with incomes plummeting and underemployment casting a shadow over our own hopes and dreams. We bear the weight of a world grappling with climate change, a challenge that demands immediate action and collective responsibility. The baton has been passed to us, and we accept it not with resentment but with determination, embodying the spirit of duty that defines a generation's legacy. What else can we do but face the challenges?
In the face of these monumental challenges, Millennials and Gen Z display an extraordinary resilience. We find strength in unity, connecting across borders and cultures to address shared concerns. Our voices reverberate through social media platforms, transforming them into tools of empowerment and change. The older generation might question our methods, but they cannot deny the power and impact of our united front.
Unlike previous generations, we embrace innovation and adaptability, using technology to amplify our message. The shift from traditional communication methods to our reliance on digital platforms reflects our inclination toward efficiency and progress. We may not use phones in the conventional way, but we utilize them to connect, share ideas, and mobilize for causes that matter. I am proud of the way my generation joins hands – not physically – but across social media and digital landscapes – to make a difference in society.
As we navigate this complex terrain, we are not burdened by the mistakes of the past but motivated by the opportunities of the future. We acknowledge the meeting with destiny not as a challenge but as a canvas on which we can paint our aspirations. The older generation might marvel at our enthusiasm, but they should also take pride in the legacy they have nurtured—a generation unafraid to embrace change, challenge the status quo, and redefine what it means to make a difference.
In the spirit of unity, innovation, and resilience, Millennials and Gen Z stand poised to usher in a new era—a renaissance defined by empathy, progress, and positive change. We are not merely the recipients of a legacy; we are the architects of our destiny. As we step into the future, we carry the torch passed down to us, illuminating the path for generations yet unborn. Together, we will become "The Greatest Generation 2.0," crafting a legacy that will inspire and resonate through the chronicles of time.
