The study of the universe is a never-ending quest for knowledge and understanding. For centuries, we have all been fascinated by the stars and the mysteries of the cosmos, and have been working to better understand the nature of our universe. In recent years, advances in technology and science have allowed us to explore the universe in ways that were once thought impossible. However, despite these advances, much remains unknown and there is much that we still need to learn. One of the reasons why I think it is important to work to better understand the nature of our universe is because it can provide us with a deeper appreciation for the world around us. By studying the stars and galaxies, we can learn about the incredible scale of the universe and the vastness of space. We can also learn about the processes that drive the universe, such as the formation of stars and the evolution of galaxies. This understanding can help us to see the world in a new light and can give us a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty and complexity of the cosmos. I believe it is important to work to better understand the nature of our universe because it can have practical benefits for humanity. For example, the study of stars and galaxies can help us to understand the evolution of the universe and the processes that drive the formation of stars and planets. This understanding can help us to better predict the future of our own solar system and to identify planets that may be suitable for life. In order to better understand the nature of our universe, there are several ideas and concepts that we can employ. One of these is the scientific method, which is a systematic approach to understanding the natural world. This involves making observations, formulating hypotheses, testing predictions, and refining our understanding based on the evidence. By using the scientific method, we can build a body of knowledge that is based on evidence and that can be used to guide future research. Mathematical models can be used to simulate the behavior of the universe and to make predictions about the future. For example, mathematical models can be used to study the behavior of stars and galaxies and to understand the processes that drive their formation and evolution. These models can also be used to study the behavior of dark matter and dark energy, two mysterious components of the universe that are thought to play a major role in its structure and evolution. One of the most exciting areas of research in the study of the universe is the search for life beyond our solar system. This involves looking for signs of life on other planets and moons, as well as searching for extraterrestrial civilizations. To do this, scientists use a variety of techniques, including studying the atmospheres of exoplanets and looking for signs of biosignatures, such as water and organic molecules. This research is important not only because it has the potential to answer some of the most fundamental questions about our universe, but also because it has the potential to provide new opportunities for discovery and exploration. In conclusion, the study of the universe is an ongoing quest for knowledge and understanding. It is important because it can provide us with a deeper appreciation for the world around us, as well as practical benefits for humanity. To better understand the nature of our universe, we can employ a variety of concepts and ideas, including the scientific method, mathematical models, and the search for life beyond our solar system. By working to better understand the nature of our universe, we can continue to expand our knowledge and make new discoveries, and we can continue to marvel at the incredible beauty and complexity of the cosmos.

Growing up in Ethiopia as the child of a single mother, I faced many challenges and obstacles. Despite these difficulties, I was determined to succeed and make a better life for myself. I worked hard in school and was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to study in the United States. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I was eager to make the most of it. My educational pursuits have been the primary focus of my life since coming to the United States. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Information Technology, with a focus on data analysis and software development. I have always been interested in technology and how it can be used to improve people's lives, and I believe that my education will allow me to make a positive impact in my community and beyond. In addition to my studies, I have been actively involved in my community. I have volunteered at local schools, teaching computer skills and helping students with their homework. I have also been involved with organizations that provide assistance to single mothers and their children. I understand the difficulties that single mothers face, and I want to do what I can to help others in similar situations. After I complete my degree, I hope to start a career in the technology industry, where I can use my skills and knowledge to help solve important problems. I am particularly interested in using technology to improve healthcare and education in developing countries, as these are two areas where technology has the potential to make a huge impact. I am also committed to giving back to my community and using my success to help others. I hope to one day be able to provide scholarships to students from Ethiopia so that they can have the same opportunities that I have had. I also want to support single mothers and their children, as I know how difficult it can be to raise a family on your own. One of my major accomplishments thus far has been my ability to pay for my education and support myself while in the United States. This has been made possible through hard work and student loans, and I am proud to have taken responsibility for my own future. I have also been recognized by my school for my academic achievements and for my contributions to the community. In conclusion, my journey has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but I have always been driven by a desire to succeed and make a better life for myself and others. My educational pursuits, career aspirations, community involvement, and major accomplishments reflect my commitment to making a positive impact in the world, and I am excited to see what the future holds. Despite the challenges that I have faced, I remain optimistic and determined to succeed, and I am grateful for the opportunities that I have had.

Math is a fascinating and challenging subject. I am fascinated by numbers, enjoy solving puzzles, and appreciate the structure and logic of mathematical concepts, and honestly, there is something in math for everyone. One of the reasons that I love math is because it provides a sense of accomplishment. Math is often thought of as a difficult subject, but with hard work and persistence, such challenges can be overcome easily and be used to solve real-life problems. This sense of accomplishment is extremely rewarding. Another reason that I absolutely enjoy is because it can be applied to real-world problems. Math is not just a collection of abstract concepts, but a tool that can be used to solve practical problems in everyday life. For example, math can be used to understand and predict patterns in data, model real-world scenarios, and make informed decisions. This practical application of math makes it relevant and meaningful and can help us to see the value of the subject beyond the classroom. In addition, math is a subject that encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Math requires us to think logically and systematically and to analyze and evaluate information in order to find solutions. These skills are valuable not just in math class, but in other subjects and in life in general. By learning to think critically and solve problems, we can develop the skills they need to be successful in whatever they choose to do. Finally, math is a subject that can be enjoyed for its own sake. Whether you are fascinated by the patterns in numbers, enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems, or appreciate the beauty of mathematical concepts, there is something in math that can be appreciated and loved. In conclusion, whether you are driven by a desire to solve problems, appreciate the practical applications of the subject, or simply enjoy the challenge and beauty of mathematical concepts, math is a subject that can be loved by students of all ages and backgrounds. So if you are considering studying math, don't be intimidated by the subject, but embrace it and see where it can take you!
    Seherzada Scholarship
As an international student who has been privileged to study in the United States, my ultimate goal is to make my mother who worked so hard to get me here proud and enable her to live a soft life. After my father passed away a few years back, my mother has been living with the sole purpose of making sure me and my sisters succeed in life. She is my biggest motivation and inspiration in life. Ever since I started school, mathematics has been my favorite subject. With this pique of interest in mind, I decided to become a woman in STEM; this led me to major in Computer Information Systems at Concord university here in the US. After joining Concord University for my undergrad studies, I joined a work-study for the Geology Department as a Software Developer to help me pay for my tuition. This study was mainly focused on data mining and data manipulation to import data from various files such as excel and CSV files to different databases. This work-study gave me a bit of an insight into what I could do as a Data Scientist and how I could be of help to my community. Following this, I decided to further my studies beyond my undergraduate and get my MS in Information Systems; with God's grace, I got accepted to John Hopkins for the same program I was interested in. I am prepared to put my all into my education and become a knowledgeable Data Scientist with a purpose. I aspire to become a data scientist and help my community back home in Ethiopia in this aspect. The current living conditions of most Ethiopians is below the poverty line. Our country is several steps behind in the technological aspect. Most governmental and private offices still use paper-based and outdated systems to provide their services. This exhausts both the service providers and the service receivers. Civil servants hate their jobs and their whole living situation including the country itself, and citizens are even more inclined to blame the government offices and the government itself, leading to an even more increased hatred towards the bureaucracy. There have been various attempts to improve the working conditions in Ethiopia; there are visible changes happening. However, more needs to be done. We have got a long way to go as a developing country. We need to understand the importance of information systems in bettering businesses and satisfying customers. Utilizing the ever-changing nature of information systems, it is possible to alleviate poverty and develop the economy of our country. Becoming a data scientist has been my goal since the moment I understood how helpful understanding data and manipulating it is in any problem-solving process. Acquiring or producing data by itself is not enough to develop a country. The accumulated data should be used for future predictions, policy-making, and accountability; these improvements in a country promise a country with a more stable economy and better living and/or working conditions. We just need to be able to understand how to utilize technology to our benefit and strategize plans to create changes. In order to make this happen, we need more data scientists in Ethiopia; in this regard, I believe I can produce a change even in the slightest form, which will in turn produce vast ripple effects.

As an African international student in the United States, it is not easy pursuing an education. I came to the states at the age of seventeen in the hopes of getting a better education. As an international student, I had to pay way more than regular (in-state) tuition for college. The out-of-state rates were a lot higher; that is one of the reasons I didn't want to go to college. My mother is a single mom taking care of me and my two sisters. After my father passed away a few years ago, my mom had to go through the unimaginable to support me and my sisters. I didn't want to burden her with having to pay insanely expensive tuition just so that I can get a degree. But she was very adamant about it and wouldn't back down. She pushed me to go abroad and have a better education and better opportunities; so I did. With God's grace, I was able to graduate college in three years with a 3.9 GPA. I wanted so badly to make my mom proud, I was focused only on my studies the entire time I was doing my undergraduate. However, I am left with a huge debt that I have to pay off. And being an international student doesn't make it easy. Federal loans don't apply to foreigners, so the student loans available to us are from private banks and financial institutions. The APRs and the interest rates from such institutions are considerably higher than the ones from Federal loans. This makes it harder for students to pay the loans over a longer period of time. I plan to pay off my debts as quickly as I can, but there's so much I can do in a world where a black woman is not given fair and equal opportunities, be it in jobs or wages. Being a black woman in STEM specifically is definitely not easy; the constant feeling like I don't belong or like I'm alone. However, growing up in a household where women made things happen with or without a man, I won't give up and will keep pushing to be debt-free and be able to take care of my mom. I have hope and aspiration to become an example to so many girls of color dreaming to become whatever their heart desires. I want to be able to help single mothers all around the world who struggle to raise their kids. I want to be an example for children who grew up under single mothers by showing the world that women if given the chance and right opportunities can become anything and everything. I am grateful that there are opportunities like this where I can make my story heard. I am honored to be considered for this scholarship.

Ever since I started school, mathematics has been my favorite subject. With this pique of interest in mind, I decided to become a woman in STEM; this led me to major in Computer Information Systems at Concord university here in the US. Even though my family wasn’t that well-off, my mother did everything she could to send me abroad for college. Since my father passed away a few years back, my mother has been living with the sole purpose of making sure me and my sisters succeed in life. Seeing this, I vowed to myself to do my very best in my studies to make her proud and make all her efforts worth it. After joining Concord University for my undergrad studies, I was lucky enough to have had the best professors in the CS and Mathematics department. My interest in technology and all of its advancements grew stronger as I took more CS courses. Diving deeper into my major, I fell in love with data; it is fascinating just how much our daily lives are affected by it. In my junior year, I joined a work-study for the Geology Department at Concord University as a Microprobe Lab Software Developer. This study was mainly focused on data mining, data interpretation, and data manipulation to import data from various files such as excel and CSV files to different databases. I worked with Python and various libraries to do the tasks. The more I participated in this work-study, the more I realized I was greatly fond of it. This work-study gave me a bit of an insight into what I could do as a Data Scientist and how I could be of help to my community. Following this, I decided to further my studies beyond undergraduate and get my MS in Information Systems. It is no secret that STEM is a male-dominated field; it wasn't easy finding myself to be the only female student in most of my classes. It always gave me a certain feeling of being left out. However, somehow, this feeling of 'not belonging' motivated me to succeed, and even though I might have been one of the very few female STEM majors in my school, I wanted to prove to myself and everyone around me that women can do just as much as what men can do in this field, if not more. I aspire to become an example to the various young women in developing countries living in below-average conditions and show them that anything is possible. Five years ago, I would've never imagined I would be in the US preparing for my graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University at the age of 21, but life has a way of happening. Through all the struggles and ups and downs, if we discipline ourselves, stay consistent with our efforts and never give up, we will for sure come out the other end as a better version of ourselves. For the sake of my mother who went through the unimaginable to get me here and all the countless women dreaming to become successful, I want to destroy the unseen barrier that women are 'less than' by showing the world that women play a huge role in all our lives, and if given the right and just opportunities could become anything and everything.

Growing up under a single mother, I believe I have gotten a first-hand experience of just how strong women are. I have witnessed my mother grow into the strong woman she is now. My mother had always been a shy and introverted person in her family, but after she lost her husband, her father, and her sister all in three-years time, she had to change who she was as a person and become the strongest version of herself. All of a sudden, she had to become the rock of our family with the responsibility of raising three young children on her own. I believe that the passing of my father was a turning point for all our lives in my family. When everybody around me, even myself doubted my ability to succeed, my mother never gave up on me; she pushed me to get to the point where I am now. I saw a certain drive and persistence in her that I have never seen before. She gave me hope and aspiration to become a strong woman like her and show the world that women are the most caring yet strongest individuals in the world. After joining Concord University for my undergraduate studies, I inclined toward math courses and saw that STEM is the most suitable field for me. This led me to major in Computer Information Systems. With God's grace and support of all my family members and friends, I was able to stay on the Dean's List for my entire time in college. It is no secret that STEM is a male-dominated field; it wasn't easy finding myself to be the only female student in most of my classes. It always gave me a certain feeling of being left out. However, somehow this feeling of 'not belonging' motivated me to succeed, and even though I might have been one of the very few female STEM majors in my school, I wanted to prove to myself and everyone around me that women can do just as much as what men can do in STEM, if not more. William M. DeSantis Sr. Scholarship
I believe life is whatever we make it to be. This world is not without its ups and downs; we all, as humans go through different struggles and hurdles. But I believe what makes life worth living is our outlook on what happens in our lives. One of my friends used to say 'Even though we are not in charge or in control of the things that might happen to us, we are the ones who decide how to react to them.' In the face of adversity, I always try to remember this statement. Life happens, with all its good and bad, happy and sad, and everything in between; In this hectic journey, we can choose to make the best out of all the things we go through because nonetheless, life goes on. We all have our high and low points in life, but being able to enjoy and break through this journey makes it worth it. After losing my father and my closest aunt at a young age, I used to believe that life isn't that important and could end at any second, so why try so hard? Why put in all the efforts when it could all be in vain the moment I pass? Without even knowing it, I think I developed a victim mentality; I started wondering why all my friends had full families and were living their best lives when I'm just existing. You can even say that I used to think that I was the only person struggling in this world; I kept asking why is this happening to me? Why me? I entered into a very dark space where I used to think that I was the victim in every situation. However, as I grew up and started maturing, I began to realize just how toxic and destructive the mindset that I had was. I started to focus on what makes me joyous and excited. Questions I'd ask myself like 'Why me?' or 'Why is this and that happening to me?' changed into 'How I can move past this experience?', 'How can I spin what's happening to better me as a person?' Whenever I would encounter a challenge, I began to train myself to always look at the better and more optimistic side. As I crawled out of the noxious cave of a mindset that I was in, I began to realize how everyone has their own hurdles they are trying to jump over. Life has and will continue to have and bring various challenges our way but how we get through and deal with them is all up to us. Challenges are not meant to be run or hidden from, but rather to be embraced. I believe that every challenge that we encounter shapes us to become a better version of ourselves. Most of us have an end goal in life or a point where we want to get to; and in this journey, we keep forgetting that we spend most of our lifetime if not all, in this pursuit. So if we don't enjoy and strive through our journey, can we really say we lived?

Since my father passed away a few years back, my mother has been living with the sole purpose of making sure me and my sisters succeed in life. I believe that the passing of my father was a turning point for all our lives in my family. My mother is my biggest motivation and inspiration in life. Following the passing of my father, she had to change who she was as a person and become stronger than she ever was; she had to become the pillar of our family. Growing up she was the shyest child in her family; despite this, after she lost her father, her husband, and her sister all in three years' time, she had to become the boldest and strongest version of herself. The responsibility of keeping us safe, raising us, and earning bread for the family fell solely on her. Losing our father was hard on me and my sisters as well, and as kids, we never really thought of how much harder it would be for our mother. However, as I grew up, I saw just how persistent and strong-willed she was; she inspired me to become a woman like her. Through her, I have seen that whatever I put my mind to, I can do, and this gave me a better outlook to stay focused on my studies and achieve my goals. Ever since I started school, mathematics has been my favorite subject, particularly statistics. I believe the reason why I liked math so much is because I’ve always believed that I’m good at it. After graduating, I decided to further my studies beyond undergraduate and get my MS in Information Systems. In this process, John Hopkins University piqued my interest in its prestigious programs. I am prepared to put my all into my education and become a knowledgeable woman with a purpose. With god's grace, I have been accepted to John Hopkins for the program I chose; however, I am currently struggling to gather funding for my studies. I can't get myself to make my mother pay for yet another one of my studies. Especially considering the economic state of my home country, Ethiopia, it is very difficult if not impossible to send money with the sky-rocketed exchange rates. Hence, my application for this scholarship will be toward my studies and if awarded I will make sure that it is well-deserved. I want to be able to help single mothers all around the world who struggle to raise their kids through a foundation that I hope to set up in the near future. Moreover, I want to set an example for other children, especially women who grew up with single parents by helping my family and my community back home.

After joining Concord University for my undergrad studies, I was lucky enough to have had the best professors in the Computer Science and Mathematics department. My interest in technology and all its advancements grew bigger as I took more CS courses. Diving deeper into my major, I fell in love with data; it is fascinating just how much our daily lives are affected by it. Following this, I decided to further my studies beyond undergraduate and get my MS in Data Science. In this process, various universities piqued my interest in their prestigious Data Science programs. I am prepared to put my all into my education and become a knowledgeable Data Scientist with a purpose. In my junior year, I joined a work-study for the Geology Department at Concord University as a Microprobe Lab Software Developer. This study was mainly focused on data mining, data interpretation, data manipulation to import data from various files such as excel files and CSV files to different databases. I worked with Python and various libraries to do the tasks. The more I participated in this work-study, the more I realized I was greatly fond of it. This work-study gave me a bit of insight into what I could do as a Data Scientist and how I could be of help to my community. Through my career, I plan to help my community back home and enable them to live better life with decent living conditions. Acquiring or producing data by itself is not enough to develop a country. The accumulated data should be used for future predictions, policy-making, and accountability. In order to make this happen, we need more data scientists in Ethiopia; in this regard, I believe I can produce a change even in the slightest form, which will, in turn, produce vast ripple effects.
