Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Growing up, I often felt like I was navigating a world that didn’t quite fit the way I saw and understood it. There were times when the noise, chaos, and expectations of daily life felt overwhelming, as if I was constantly trying to keep up with a rhythm that wasn’t my own. Social situations, in particular, were challenging, and I often felt out of place or misunderstood. It wasn’t until later that I realized my mind processes things differently from others, a realization that has been both a struggle and a gift. Finding out and realizing I have autism, and embracing it rather than hiding it, has shaped me in profound ways, influencing my goals, relationships, and overall understanding of the world.
As I grew older, I began to see that the way I perceive the world—while different—gives me a unique perspective, especially in fields like engineering, where problem-solving and innovative thinking are essential. My experiences have taught me to approach challenges with determination and creativity. Rather than viewing my differences as obstacles, I have come to see them as strengths that allow me to think outside the box. This mindset has driven me to pursue a dual degree in mechanical engineering and engineering mathematics, with a passion for materials science and manufacturing. I’m particularly drawn to the aerospace industry, where I hope to develop new materials and methods for space exploration. The idea of contributing to humanity’s journey beyond our planet is thrilling, and I’m motivated by the belief that my unique perspective can bring something valuable to this field.
In addition to shaping my academic and career goals, my experiences have deeply influenced my relationships. Growing up feeling different from my peers has made me incredibly empathetic and sensitive to the needs of others. I know what it feels like to struggle silently, to face challenges that others may not fully understand. This has made me more patient and understanding in my interactions, and I strive to be a source of support for those around me, especially for those who, like me, might feel out of place at times. I’ve found that these qualities help me build deeper, more meaningful connections with people. My friendships and relationships are built on mutual respect and a genuine understanding of each other’s challenges and strengths.
These experiences have also broadened my understanding of the world in significant ways. I’ve come to realize that everyone has their own battles, many of which are not immediately visible. This awareness has made me passionate about mental health advocacy. In engineering, where the focus is often on technical skills and achievements, the mental health of students and professionals is sometimes overlooked. I believe that fostering an environment where people feel safe to talk about their challenges is crucial, and I am committed to being part of the change that breaks down the stigma surrounding mental health. By advocating for open dialogue and understanding, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and supportive culture within STEM.
Receiving this scholarship would be an incredible help to me in pursuing these goals. Financially, it would alleviate some of the pressures I currently face, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on the multiple jobs I work to support myself through school. With my family unable to contribute financially, this scholarship would provide the stability I need to dedicate more time to my academic pursuits and my involvement in organizations like MASA and SWE, where I can continue to grow both personally and professionally. It would also affirm the importance of mental health advocacy in STEM, giving me the resources and confidence to further this cause in my future career.
Looking ahead, I’m determined to use my experiences and education to make a meaningful impact. Whether it’s through advancing technology in the aerospace industry or helping to foster a more inclusive and understanding environment for those with mental health challenges, I’m committed to making a difference. My journey has shown me that our differences are not weaknesses, but rather strengths that can drive innovation and empathy. I am proud to use my unique perspective to contribute to a world where everyone, regardless of their challenges, has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
