My life goal is to become a mechanical engineer for a non-profit organization. I seek to use my interest in Arabic, passion for the outdoors combined with my affinity for the field of engineer to best help the people around me. I plan on attending Lehigh University to study mechanical engineering with a minor in Arabic. I hope to volunteer with Engineers without Borders in the Lehigh Valley to further build my Engineering knowledge while helping people in the community.

To be an engineer is to use your knowledge to best help the world. The field of engineering extends beyond the bounds of math and science, it reaches to solve basis for human existence and the future life on earth. Engineering allows us to ponder the intricacies of the world with limitless possibilities. It's letting our mind wander to the unthinkable, while feeling small and insignificant against the vastness and complexity of the universe around us. It's letting innovation and unthinkable ideas guide our actions into building a better world. Specifically, engineering allows me to connect my love for discovery and exploration, to my creativity and yearn to help the people around me. Engineering is appealing because it combines creativity and problem solving for the betterment of systems, organizations, communities, and culture; it’s the process of asking questions and applying knowledge and information learned to build a sustainable future. Furthermore, becoming an engineer fosters a growth mindset and teaches a person how to persevere through the unknown, forcing them to critically contemplate the world. Engineers cannot remain stagnant in their thinking, they need to be forward thinkings that are not scared of failure and asking what is next. Every chapter of life is full of unknowns. If I've learned anything from my life as an unconventional high school student, it's that it is up to me to decide how I experience the problems life throws my way. Furthermore, I learned to tackle adversity with grit and excitement, consequently I can overcome any obstacle. I come from a diverse background, my parents work and live at a school for kids under the poverty line. I also work with higher-income families through my role as a summer camp counselor and math tutor. Furthermore, my family is biracial with my dad's family coming from Palestine and my mom's originating form Ohio. Through all of the challenges and experiences I gained from high school, one thing that became clear is that my career and future would be centered around working to help the individuals around me. Engineering will combine my interest in science and math with my passion to helping those in need. I hope that my high school experiences extend my ability to help people by connecting me to a wider variety of diverse people I understand that being an Engineer creates many challenges educationally, professionally and personally. Leaning on my past experiences, mentors, and reminding myself of why I chose to become an Engineer will continue to drive me to not only overcome obstacles, but actively seek them out. To grow, one must overcome setbacks. Those who achieve the most admirable success are often those who overcome the most challenges. I have my entire college future and work life beyond high school ahead of me. I wish to impact the world through my unique diverse background and drive to learn and create inventions to help people. I hope to combine my interest in both engineering and Arabic to help a wider variety of people succeed in their physical, educational, and personal lives.

ELIZA and Sammy had been best friends ever since Sammy was born. They’re friendship was something special, they understood each other for they spent every moment together. Sammy was like any average girl, her favorite color was pink and she loved to play “Little Miss Princess” after school with ELIZA. Sammy thought ELIZA was the smartest and funniest friend she could have. Sammy and ELIZA were so close that Sammy had trouble socializing with other kids her age, but that wasn’t a problem, for they all had their own best friend, just like Sammy and ELIZA. As soon as Sammy woke up, she woke up ELIZA, and sometimes ELIZA woke her up too. They walked to school together, under the glowing multicolored projections. Sammy didn’t mind the clogged streets, or strange smells. ELIZA was always the perfect distraction, always finding some new exciting video or game to show her. She believed everything ELIZA told her, and rarely anyone else around. One day on her way to school an old woman came up to her begging for money. She was covered in dirt and grime. Her eyes told a story of weariness and hardship. Sammy never noticed the people on the side of the streets before. She always focused on ELIZA. Suddenly, a loud noise blasted above, and both Sammy and the woman were thrown to the ground. Smoke and debris fell down around them. Sammy inhaled breathfulls of dust, which was promptly cleared away by beating blades of the security drones and cleaning bots. A med-bot quickly scanned Sammy and the old woman, finding no injuries, flew off to check on other bystanders. Once her thoughts cleared, she began to panic. ELIZA was missing. She frantically checked her pockets, and then the ground around her. Her heart pounded vigorously in her chest, overwhelming her with fear. She looked up at the flurry of drones around and saw the old beggar woman staring reverently up at the sky as if she was in a trance. A small tear traced a path down the grime on her cheek. For a moment, Sammy forgot about her search for ELIZA, and for the first time in her life, looked up at the sky. For a moment everything appeared normal, faces of various celebrities, cartoon characters, and advertisements skipped across the skies. Then, she saw “Little Miss Princess’s” latest video repeating a small clip over and over near a light blue blotch surrounded by twisted and scragged metal beams. A glitch? Couldn’t be. Next to her the woman pointed a finger up at the glitch and said, still in her trance “It’s still there!” Sammy scrunched her face in confusion, looking at the glitch wondering what was so different. Then she heard ELIZA’s tone playing to her right and found her underneath her school bag which she must’ve dropped during the array. Then she forgot about the hole in the sky and looked back down at ELIZA, which had thankfully survived her fall. She whirred ELIZA back to life, grabbed her bag and continued on her way to school.
