Bio

My name is Tobenna Okezie, and I also go by Tobey. I am a George Bush High School student currently in my senior year that plans on attending a college or university after I graduate. In my free time I participate in my after school club, the Asian Student Union which organizes events and learning opportunities for Asian students around my school campus. We also participate in after extracurricular activities such as school fairs, weekly meetings, and fund-raising. I also attend tutorial hours for school courses such as pre-calculus, calculus 1, AP physics, environmental science , and practice learning how to code languages such as Java and C++ for the major I intend to pursue. I plan on going to Prairie View A&M university to graduate with a bachelors degree in computer science and a minor in mechanical engineering. Although Prairie View is my top choice for universities, I am grateful for any school that decides to allow me to attend their campus for their education. When I moved from Nigeria to the area I lived in, many people in my neighborhood, including my family had little to no resources to help students with education. Being a family of 6, while still taking care of my grandma, I had no other choice but to learn how to overcome difficult situations through perseverance. I want to use the education I learn from computer science to establish stem programs in Richmond Texas to help students with their desired field of studies. I am thankful for the opportunities Bold.org has given students like me to help fund our sought after education.

Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
On Martin Luther King Jr day this January, I faced a life-altering event that left me grappling with both physical and emotional pain. While entering a gas station I suffered a car crash that not only resulted in a fractured wrist but brought symptoms of PTSD to my life. Over the past year, as I have aimed to reflect on this journey, I can say with certainty that overcoming this obstacle has not been easy, but has shaped me into the person I have became today. The car crash itself was a harrowing experience. The screeching tires, the head-on collision, —it was a moment that seemed to stretch into eternity. The physical injury I sustained was apparent: a fractured wrist that required surgical intervention and a lengthy recovery process. However, my emotional wounds ran much deeper. The onset of PTSD following the accident was unexpected. I started receiving nightmares, flashbacks, and a constant state of anxiety from the incident. Everyday tasks such as getting behind the wheel again or crossing a busy street, became overwhelming challenges. It felt as though fear had taken root within me. The journey to reclaim my mental well-being was arduous, but it ultimately led to immense personal growth. Seeking professional help was the first step toward healing. With the support of a compassionate therapist, I gradually learned coping mechanisms to manage my PTSD symptoms. Breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and cognitive-behavioral therapy became valuable tools in my recovery arsenal. I also engaged in group therapy, connecting with individuals who had endured similar experiences. Sharing our stories and supporting one another instilled a sense of resilience and hope. Additionally, physical therapy for my fractured wrist became a metaphor for my overall recovery. Each exercise and repetition was a tangible representation of my determination to regain strength, both physically and mentally. The journey of overcoming suffering from PTSD and a fractured wrist has shaped me into a more compassionate and empathetic individual. It has deepened my understanding of the human experience and the importance of mental health. Through this transformative experience, I have also learned to prioritize self-care and to be kinder to myself during times of difficulty. As a passionate advocate for mental health, my dreams for the future are centered around advancing the well-being of society. While my academic pursuit lies in computer science, I firmly believe that technology can play a transformative role in addressing mental health challenges on a large scale. One aspect of my vision is to develop innovative digital tools and platforms that can enhance mental health support and accessibility. With me studying computer science I aim to create user-friendly applications that empower individuals to monitor their mental well-being, access resources, and connect with professionals. By leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, these tools can provide personalized recommendations and interventions, thereby revolutionizing the way mental health care is delivered. Moreover, I aspire to contribute to research in psychology. By collaborating with others, I will apply my knowledge to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns, risk factors, and early indicators of mental health conditions. This interdisciplinary approach has the potential to improve diagnosis and intervention strategies, leading to more effective treatment outcomes. I recognize the significance of destigmatizing mental health issues and promoting awareness. Through help and hard work within the stem field, I can leverage social media, online platforms, and digital campaigns to amplify the voices of those affected by mental health challenges By spreading accurate information, fostering dialogue, and encouraging empathy, I hope to break down barriers and create a society that is more understanding and supportive.

Throughout history, societies have struggled to address issues like poverty, discrimination, and other forms of oppression that affect the marginalized. Despite the fact that a few things have changed, there is still significantly more work to be finished. In this essay, I'll argue that society needs to change how it deals with problems that affect the poor. To begin, the current approach to addressing the challenges faced by the underprivileged frequently fails. Short-term solutions are frequently given higher priority than addressing the root causes of problems by governments and other institutions. For instance, although food assistance can help in the short term to alleviate hunger, it does not address the systemic issues that perpetuate poverty. Similarly, although anti-discrimination policies can provide legal protections to marginalized groups, they do not address the underlying attitudes that lead to social discrimination. Additionally, the ongoing approach to resolving the problems of the burdened frequently enhances the strength of existing power structures. For instance, a lot of social welfare programs require people to demonstrate that they require assistance, which can be challenging for those without sufficient financial resources or education. This approach frequently results in the stigmatization of the disadvantaged and reinforces the notion that they are responsible for their problems rather than acknowledging the significance of systemic issues. On the other hand, a more comprehensive strategy that addresses the root causes of the difficulties that underprivileged people face would be more effective. This could entail investing in education and job training programs, addressing housing and healthcare disparities, and advocating for policies that encourage social mobility. In addition, it would require a determination to alter power structures and attitudes as well as an understanding of the systemic factors that contribute to the marginalization of particular groups. In addition to being more effective, it is also better for morality to take a broader approach to addressing the challenges faced by the disadvantaged. It recognizes that every individual possesses inherent worth and dignity, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or any other factor. In addition, it acknowledges that the difficulties that the underprivileged face are societal issues that call for collective solutions rather than individual ones. Of course, changing how society deals with the problems of the poor won't be easy. It will require significant investments in education, healthcare, and social programs. Additionally, it will require a shift in power structures and social norms, which can be difficult to achieve. However, there would be incalculable benefits to such a shift. Not only would it help alleviate the suffering of millions of people, but it would also lead to the establishment of a society that is more just and fair for everyone. In conclusion, I think society needs to change how it deals with problems that affect the poor. A more all-encompassing approach that addresses the underlying causes of the problems would be more effective and moral, whereas the current method is frequently insufficient and serves to support the power structures that are already in place. The benefits would be incalculable, and making such a change won't be simple.

There has been a lot of discussion about the need for change and increased trust as a result of the strained relationships that exist between the African American population in the United States and law enforcement agencies. To close this gap and encourage positive interactions, law enforcement agencies must take proactive measures. In this essay, we'll take a look at a few different initiatives and methods that can be used to build trust, strengthen relationships, and make it easier for the African American community and law enforcement to understand one another. To establish more solid connections with the African American population, policing should concentrate on local area policing procedures. This strategy involves officials effectively engaging with locals, attending local events, organizing discourse discussions, and organizing joint drives with local associations. By encouraging positive interactions and demonstrating genuine concern for the community, law enforcement agencies can foster trust and understanding. To combat bias and promote fair treatment, law enforcement agencies should implement extensive cultural sensitivity and cultural competency training programs. Through these programs, officers should have a better understanding of the historical context, experiences, and challenges African Americans face. By cultivating empathy and awareness, officers can approach interactions with cultural sensitivity, lowering the likelihood of misunderstandings and biased behavior. African Americans can benefit from improved relationships with law enforcement agencies that actively diversify. Organizations can guarantee a greater delegation force that comprehends and comprehends the unique requirements and concerns of the local area by enrolling and advancing more African American officials. When law enforcement agencies have different points of view, communication can be improved, biases can be reduced, and trust can be strengthened. Law enforcement agencies must emphasize accountability and transparency to restore trust. This includes thorough investigations and disciplinary measures for misconduct to guarantee that officers are held accountable for any misconduct or abuse of power. Policies, procedures, and data about officer-involved incidents that are made available to the public can foster trust in the fairness and integrity of law enforcement agencies, increase public scrutiny, and promote transparency. By forming partnerships with African American community leaders and organizations, it is possible to close the gap. By actively including community members in the decision-making process, law enforcement agencies can gain insight into the concerns of the community and collaborate to develop effective solutions. Through collaborative initiatives like mentorship programs, community forums, and advisory boards, relationships can be strengthened and mutual understanding enhanced. Reconciliation and the healing of previous wounds can both benefit from restorative justice programs. The primary objectives of these programs are rehabilitation, accountability, and repairing the harm caused by criminal activity. By involving the community, including African American leaders and those who have been affected, law enforcement agencies can demonstrate a dedication to fairness, promote healing, and reestablish trust. To improve relationships between African American citizens and law enforcement agencies, a multifaceted strategy based on proactive strategies is required. By prioritizing community policing, cultural competency training, diversifying agencies, accountability, transparency, collaboration with community leaders, restorative justice programs, and regular dialogue, law enforcement agencies can begin to rebuild trust and foster a sense of security within the African American community. Policing can play a crucial role in promoting equity, correspondence, and harmony among all Unified networks through supported efforts and a commitment to impartial treatment.

    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
As someone who has experienced mental health challenges, I have come to understand the profound impact they can have on all aspects of life, including beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Mental health challenges can be a difficult journey to navigate, with the societal and systemic barriers faced by many individuals only adding to the challenges. In my experience, it can be challenging to develop positive beliefs about self-worth and identity while grappling with feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. Mental health concerns can make it difficult to form positive relationships with others, as the challenges faced may impact one's ability to connect with others. This can cause feelings of loneliness and further exacerbate the negative thoughts and feelings one may already be experiencing. Conversely, positive and supportive relationships can be a powerful protective factor for mental health, providing a sense of belonging and support during challenging times. Having a supportive network of individuals who genuinely care for one's well-being can help provide a sense of purpose and direction, which can improve overall mental health outcomes. However, access to resources and support is not always easy, and systemic barriers can prevent individuals from receiving the care they need. The cultural stigma surrounding mental health can make it difficult for individuals to recognize when they may need support, and a lack of resources can limit access to care. This can lead to a sense of isolation and disconnection from support networks, which can further exacerbate mental health concerns. In my personal experience, accessing resources and support has been a challenge, and it is important to recognize that the current system is not designed to meet the needs of everyone. Addressing these systemic issues and creating a more equitable and accessible mental health care system is critical in supporting individuals' mental health journeys. The impact of mental health on career aspirations cannot be overstated. Mental health concerns can significantly impact academic performance and career success, limiting opportunities for personal and professional growth. Additionally, the systemic barriers to success faced by many individuals can make it challenging to achieve their goals, contributing to feelings of hopelessness and frustration. The stigma surrounding mental health can further contribute to these feelings, as individuals may feel ashamed to disclose their struggles and seek the help they need. In my experience, it has been a challenge to reconcile my mental health concerns with my career aspirations, as I often feel like I must choose between my mental health and my professional goals. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to pursuing my career aspirations and making a positive impact in my community. For me, this has meant finding ways to balance my mental health needs with my professional goals, and recognizing that success is not an all-or-nothing proposition. It has also meant advocating for systemic change and creating greater awareness around mental health and its impact on individuals' lives. I believe that by working together and supporting one another, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society that prioritizes mental health and well-being. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Mental health concerns can be a challenging journey to navigate, and the societal and systemic barriers faced by many individuals only add to the challenges. However, with greater awareness, education, and advocacy, we can work towards creating a world where individuals with mental health concerns can thrive and achieve their full potential.

This system provides a framework for the protection of individual rights and the establishment of a government that is transparent and responsive to the needs and concerns of its citizens. Another reason I am passionate about the Constitution is its commitment to protecting individual liberties. The Bill of Rights, the first of ten amendments to the Constitution, guarantees individual rights such as freedom of speech, religion, and the press, as well as protections against unreasonable search and seizure and cruel and unusual punishment. These rights are fundamental to our democracy and help to ensure that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect. As someone looking forward to studying computer science in college, I believe that technology can play a crucial role in promoting civil rights and social justice. I plan to use my skills and expertise to develop innovative solutions to some of the most pressing social issues of our time. One way I plan to continue to fight for civil rights through my career in computer science is by developing algorithms that are free from bias and discrimination. As we know, algorithms and artificial intelligence systems have been shown to perpetuate existing biases and inequalities, particularly when it comes to race and gender. As a computer scientist, I plan to work on developing fair and unbiased systems that promote equality and diversity. In addition to promoting access to technology, I plan to develop new tools and platforms that promote civic engagement and political activism. The power of social media and other online platforms in shaping public discourse and driving social change has become evident in recent years. As a computer scientist, I plan to work on developing new tools and platforms that empower people to engage in the democratic process and fight for social justice. Finally, I want to work on developing innovative solutions to the challenges facing society today. For example, I believe that technology can play a critical role in addressing issues such as climate change, income inequality, and healthcare access. By working on developing new technologies that can help to address these challenges, I hope to make a positive impact on society and promote civil rights and social justice. In conclusion, the United States Constitution is a document that reflects the values of our nation and provides a framework for the protection of individual rights and the establishment of a government that is accountable to the people. As a computer science professional, I plan to continue to fight for civil rights and social justice by developing fair and unbiased algorithms, promoting access to technology and digital literacy, and working on developing new tools and platforms that promote civic engagement and political activism. I am committed to using my skills and expertise to make a difference in the world and promote a more just and equitable society.

.Unpopular opinions are those that go against the norm or popular beliefs, and as such, can be considered controversial or even offensive to some. However, unpopular opinions can be valuable in providing alternative perspectives and initiating meaningful conversations. One such unpopular opinion that I believe is important to address is the notion that the pursuit of happiness as the ultimate goal in life is misguided. For many people, the pursuit of happiness is considered the most important objective in life. We are bombarded with messages from self-help books, social media, and advertisements that tell us that happiness is the key to a successful and fulfilling life. However, I believe that this emphasis on happiness can lead to a narrow and unrealistic view of life, and may even be harmful to our overall well-being. First and foremost, the pursuit of happiness as the ultimate goal in life implies that negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, and fear, are undesirable and should be avoided at all costs. This can be a dangerous mindset, as negative emotions are a natural part of the human experience and serve important functions, such as helping us to cope with difficult situations, motivating us to make positive changes, and building resilience. By constantly striving for happiness and avoiding negative emotions, we may be denying ourselves the opportunity to learn and grow from our experiences. Furthermore, the emphasis on happiness can create unrealistic expectations and feelings of inadequacy. In today's society, there is constant pressure to present a perfect image of oneself on social media and to achieve success in all areas of life. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression when we inevitably fall short of these unrealistic expectations. By placing so much importance on happiness, we may be setting ourselves up for disappointment and feelings of inadequacy when we fail to achieve it. So why do I hold this unpopular opinion? Firstly, I believe that it is important to acknowledge and embrace the full range of emotions that make up the human experience. Negative emotions are not something to be feared or avoided, but rather an opportunity for growth and learning. Additionally, I believe that the pursuit of happiness can be a shallow and self-centered goal that does not necessarily lead to a meaningful and fulfilling life. By focusing solely on our happiness, we may be neglecting our responsibilities to others and society as a whole. Ultimately, I believe that there is more to life than the pursuit of happiness. We should strive to live a life that is meaningful and fulfilling, even if that means experiencing a wide range of emotions, including negative ones. By embracing the full range of human emotions and focusing on our responsibilities to others and society, we can lead a more balanced and fulfilling life. In conclusion, holding an unpopular opinion can be challenging, but it is important to acknowledge and embrace the full range of human emotions and to focus on living a meaningful and fulfilling life, rather than just the pursuit of happiness. By challenging the popular belief that happiness is the ultimate goal in life, we can create a more balanced and realistic view of what it means to live a fulfilling life.

    Westport Big & Tall Scholarship
Being big and/or tall can often lead to some funny situations, especially when you are not expecting them. One time that I can remember was when I was attending a crowded concert, and I ended up standing right in front of a group of kids who could not see the stage. At first, I did not realize that they were having a hard time seeing, but soon enough, I heard them whispering to each other and giggling. I turned around to see what was going on, and to my surprise, I found that they were staring up at me with big, curious eyes. They must have been no more than ten years old, and they were staring up at me in awe. At first, I was taken aback, but then I realized that they probably couldn't see the stage because of my height. Without even thinking, I decided to make a joke out of the situation. I bent down and whispered in their ears, "Don't worry, I'll be your human ladder." They all burst out laughing, and one of them even high-fived me. From that moment on, they kept looking back at me and giggling, and I could not help but laugh along with them. Another time being big and/or tall led to a funny situation was when I tried to fit into a tiny car. My friends had invited me to join them on a road trip, but they had not taken into consideration that I might not fit in their compact car. I had to contort my body in all sorts of ways just to get into the back seat, and even then, I was squeezed in so tight that I couldn't move my legs. As we drove down the highway, I tried to shift my position to find some comfort, but it was no use. My friends kept making jokes about how I was the "biggest backseat driver" they had ever seen, and they would not stop teasing me about it. But instead of getting mad, I decided to play along and make some jokes of my own. I pretended to take the wheel and shout out directions, and we all ended up laughing so hard that we had to pull over to catch our breath. In both of these situations, being big and/or tall led to some unexpected and hilarious moments. Instead of getting embarrassed or upset, I decided to embrace the situation and make the most out of it. I found that by making jokes and poking fun at myself, I was able to connect with others and have a good time. Being big and/or tall may have its challenges, but it also has its advantages. For example, I can easily reach high shelves, and I never have to worry about not being able to see in a crowded room. But more importantly, being big and/or tall has taught me to embrace my differences and find humor in unexpected situations. And in a world that can sometimes take itself too seriously, that is a skill that I am grateful to have.

A Glimpse of Hope In the depths of despair, When darkness clouds my mind, And hope seems like a distant dream, I search for a glimmer of light to find. It may be a fleeting moment, A smile from a passing stranger, Or a ray of sunshine on my face, But it fills me with a sense of wonder. Even in the darkest hour, There is a flicker of hope that remains, A reminder that life is ever-changing, And brighter days are yet to be gained. It's easy to feel lost and alone, In a world that seems so vast and unknown, But if we look beyond our fears and doubts, We may find the courage to carry on. For hope is a powerful force, That can lift us when we're feeling down, And guide us toward a brighter future, Where joy and love can once again be found. So if you're feeling lost or afraid, And the weight of the world is too much to bear, Just remember that hope is always there, Ready to lift you and help you repair. And though the road may be long and winding, And the journey may be tough at times, Just keep your eyes fixed on that glimmer of hope, And you'll find the strength to keep on climbing.

However, I have found solace and comfort in pursuing my passions as a way to cope with my illness. One of my greatest passions is writing. Writing has always been a therapeutic outlet for me, allowing me to express my thoughts and emotions healthily. When I write, I can release my anxiety and stress onto the page, and it often feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. In addition to writing, I also find joy in playing music. Whether it's playing guitar or singing, music has always been a way for me to escape from the stresses of daily life and find peace within myself. Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed or anxious, I turn to music as a way to ground myself and find inner peace. However, despite my passion for writing and music, living with a mental illness can often make it challenging to pursue these hobbies. There are days when I lack the motivation or energy to write or play music and other days when my anxiety is too overwhelming to focus on anything else. In those moments, I have learned to be kind to myself and to take things one day at a time. Instead of pushing myself too hard, I allow myself to take a break and practice self-care. Whether it's taking a walk, practicing yoga, or simply taking a nap, I have learned to prioritize my mental health and take care of myself first and foremost. Looking toward the future, my goals and aspirations are driven by my passion for writing and music. As a member of society, I strive to be a positive force both now and in the future. I believe that this begins with my personal values and actions, as well as my commitment to being an active and engaged member of my community. One way that I see myself as a positive force in society is through my work in promoting environmental sustainability. I believe that it is important for individuals and communities to take responsibility for the impact they have on the environment, and I am committed to doing my part to reduce my carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices. I also believe that promoting social justice and equity is essential to creating a positive and just society. I strive to be an ally and advocate for marginalized communities, and to use my voice and privilege to amplify their stories and perspectives. In addition to my individual actions, I see myself as a positive force in society through my work in community organizations and activism. Through volunteering and advocacy, I aim to make a positive impact on the lives of those around me and to create positive change in my community. However, it is important to acknowledge that the parameters of current social norms can shape our thinking and actions, both positively and negatively. For example, social norms can influence our beliefs about what is acceptable or unacceptable behavior, and can impact our ability to challenge or resist societal pressures. At times, social norms can also reinforce systems of inequality and discrimination, which can make it more difficult for individuals to be positive forces for change. For example, social norms around gender and race can contribute to the marginalization of certain groups, and can make it more difficult for individuals from these groups to be seen as positive forces in society. Despite these challenges, I believe that it is important to continue striving to be a positive force in society. This means acknowledging the ways in which social norms can shape our thinking and behavior, and actively working to challenge and resist these norms when they contribute to injustice and inequality. It also means recognizing the power of collective action and community organizing in creating positive change. By coming together with others who share our values and goals, we can amplify our voices and create a more powerful force for change in society. Ultimately, being a positive force in society requires a commitment to ongoing learning and growth. It means being willing to listen to and learn from the experiences of others, and to continuously examine and challenge our own beliefs and assumptions. In conclusion, I believe that being a positive force in society is both a personal and collective responsibility. It requires a commitment to individual actions and values, as well as a willingness to engage in community organizing and advocacy. While social norms can shape our thinking and behavior, it is important to continue striving for positive change and to challenge and resist norms that contribute to inequality and injustice. By working together and committing to ongoing learning and growth, we can create a more just and equitable society for all.

One book that has had a transformative impact on my life is "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. This book is a spiritual guide to living in the present moment and letting go of negative thoughts and emotions that can cause stress and anxiety. Before reading this book, I was often consumed by worry and anxiety about the future, and I would dwell on past mistakes and regrets. This constant state of stress and negativity made it difficult for me to enjoy the present moment and appreciate the good things in my life. "The Power of Now" helped me to understand that the only moment that truly matters is the present moment. By focusing on the present and letting go of negative thoughts and emotions, I could experience a greater sense of peace and happiness in my life. One of the key concepts in the book is the idea of the "pain body," which refers to the accumulation of negative emotions and energy that can build up over time. This pain body can be triggered by certain events or situations, causing us to relive past traumas or negative experiences. Tolle suggests that by acknowledging the pain body and bringing awareness to it, we can begin to release its hold on us and live more fully in the present moment. The book also emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and meditation in cultivating a more present-focused mindset. By practicing mindfulness and focusing on our breath, we can become more aware of our thoughts and emotions, and learn to let go of negative patterns and habits that hold us back. Reading "The Power of Now" was a transformative experience for me. It helped me to see the world in a new light and gave me the tools I needed to cultivate a more positive and present-focused mindset. I began to practice mindfulness and meditation regularly, and I noticed a significant improvement in my overall sense of well-being and happiness. I also began to appreciate the little moments in life more deeply. Instead of constantly worrying about the future or dwelling on the past, I learned to savor the simple pleasures in life, like spending time with loved ones, enjoying a good meal, or taking a walk in nature. Perhaps the most transformative aspect of "The Power of Now" was its emphasis on the importance of letting go of negative emotions and patterns that hold us back. By becoming more aware of my pain body and learning to release negative patterns of thought and behavior, I was able to live a more fulfilling and authentic life. In conclusion, "The Power of Now" is a book that has had a profound impact on my life. It taught me the importance of living in the present moment, letting go of negative thoughts and emotions, and cultivating a more positive and present-focused mindset. By following the book's teachings and practicing mindfulness and meditation, I was able to experience a greater sense of peace and happiness in my life, and I continue to use these tools to this day to live a more fulfilling and authentic life.

Drug abuse is a growing problem in many communities, and unfortunately, my community is not immune to this issue. It is heartbreaking to see individuals and families impacted by drug addiction, and it is clear that action must be taken to address this problem. If I had the power to take away the high rising drug abuse problem in my community, I would do so without hesitation. The first step in addressing this problem is to understand the root causes of drug abuse. Many factors contribute to drug addiction, including social and economic factors, peer pressure, and mental health issues. Addressing these underlying causes is essential to preventing drug abuse in the first place. To address these root causes, I would work to implement programs and resources that support individuals and families in my community. For example, I would advocate for increased funding for mental health services, including counseling and therapy, to ensure that individuals have access to the support they need to manage mental health issues that may contribute to drug addiction. I would also work to increase access to education and employment opportunities in my community. By improving access to education and training, individuals can increase their economic stability, which can reduce the likelihood of turning to drugs as a means of coping with financial stress. Another key component of addressing drug abuse in my community would be to increase access to drug treatment and rehabilitation programs. These programs can be expensive, and many individuals may not have access to the resources necessary to pay for treatment. I would work to increase funding for drug treatment programs and advocate for insurance coverage for these programs to ensure that all individuals have access to the care they need to recover from addiction. In addition to these preventative measures, it is also important to address the current drug abuse problem in my community. This would involve increasing access to resources for those who are struggling with addiction, such as peer support groups, counseling, and medical treatment. I would work to increase awareness of these resources and ensure that they are readily available to those who need them. In addition, I would work to increase law enforcement efforts to address drug trafficking in my community. This would involve increasing police presence in areas where drug activity is known to occur, as well as increasing efforts to identify and apprehend drug dealers. By taking a proactive approach to addressing drug trafficking, we can prevent drugs from getting into the hands of individuals who may be susceptible to addiction. Finally, I would work to increase awareness and education about the dangers of drug abuse in my community. This would involve working with schools, community organizations, and local media outlets to spread awareness about the risks associated with drug abuse and to provide resources for those who may be struggling with addiction. In conclusion, drug abuse is a growing problem in many communities, and my community is no exception. If I had the power to take away the high rising drug abuse problem in my community, I would work to implement a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of drug addiction, increases access to treatment and rehabilitation programs, increases law enforcement efforts to address drug trafficking, and increases awareness and education about the dangers of drug abuse. By taking these steps, we can work to prevent drug abuse and help those who are struggling with addiction to recover and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Helping those in need is a core value that I hold close to my heart. It brings me great satisfaction knowing that I have made a positive impact on someone's life. This is especially true when it comes to helping my loved ones, and one such instance was when I helped my little brother Kamsi with his anxiety issues in school. Kamsi was in middle school and was struggling with anxiety. He was having trouble concentrating in class, and his grades were starting to suffer as a result. He was also feeling overwhelmed by the social pressures of school and was feeling isolated and alone. As a big brother, I felt a strong urge to help him and make a positive impact on his life. I started by talking to him about his anxiety and how he was feeling. I listened to his concerns and offered him support and encouragement. I also made sure to spend quality time with him, doing things that he enjoyed, such as playing video games or watching reality tv shows together. I also spoke with his teachers and school counselor to gain a better understanding of the situation and to see if there was anything that could be done to help him in school. Together, we came up with a plan to help him manage his anxiety and succeed in school. One of the key things that helped my little brother was having a support system. I made sure to be there for him, offering encouragement and support whenever he needed it. I also made sure to listen to him and validate his feelings, helping him to feel heard and understood. In addition, I also worked with him on coping strategies to help manage his anxiety. We practiced mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing and meditation, which helped him to calm down and feel more centered. I also encouraged him to engage in physical activity, as exercise is an effective way of reducing anxiety symptoms. With my support and the strategies we put in place, my little brother's anxiety began to lessen, and he started to feel more confident in himself and his abilities. His grades improved, and he became more engaged in school and his social life. In conclusion, helping Kamsi with his anxiety issues was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I learned that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference in someone's life and that it is important to be there for those we love, especially when they need us the most. As a young black man, I have experienced a great deal of personal growth over the past year. This growth has been inspired by a variety of events and situations, but the most significant has been my decision to pursue higher education. I had always known that I wanted to attend college, but I was hesitant to take the plunge. I was scared of the unknown and uncertain about my ability to succeed in such an unfamiliar environment. However, after much contemplation and soul-searching, I decided that it was time for me to take the leap and pursue my dreams. Since then, I have changed in many ways. For one, I have become more confident in myself and my abilities. Before this journey began, I was plagued by self-doubt and insecurity; now, however, I am more sure of myself and my potential for success. Additionally, I have become more independent and self-reliant; no longer do I rely on others for guidance or support when making decisions or tackling challenges. Finally, my outlook on life has changed drastically; instead of seeing obstacles as insurmountable walls blocking my path forward, I now view them as opportunities for growth and learning. I have also come to understand the importance of having a positive mindset. I now recognize that to reach my goals and achieve success, I must maintain a positive attitude and outlook on life. Additionally, I have learned to be more mindful of my thoughts and actions; instead of letting negative emotions take control, I now strive to stay focused on the present moment and be aware of how my words and actions affect those around me. Finally, I have come to understand the importance of self-reflection; no matter how busy life may get, I must take time for myself to reflect on my experiences and learn from them. Despite these changes in attitude and outlook, some things about me remain the same. My core values—such as integrity, honesty, and respect—have not wavered; if anything they have become even stronger over time. Additionally, my commitment to helping others has remained steadfast; no matter what challenges come my way or how busy life gets, helping those around me is still a priority for me. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding; it has pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to confront difficult truths about myself. However, it has also allowed me to discover new strengths within myself that I never knew existed. Most importantly though, it has taught me the power of resilience—that no matter how difficult things may seem at times or how uncertain the future maybe—with hard work and dedication anything is possible!

As a black 17-year-old male high school student, I have faced several difficulties throughout my educational journey. One of the main challenges I have faced is the lack of representation and support within my school and community. Growing up, I often felt like I was the only person of color in my classes, and it was difficult to find role models or mentors who could relate to my experiences. Additionally, I have had to contend with the negative stereotypes and biases that are often directed toward black males. I have been unfairly judged and discriminated against because of my race, and it has been a constant struggle to prove myself and my worth to others. As I progressed through my education, I began to realize that my struggles were not unique. Many of my peers were facing similar challenges, and it became clear to me that systemic issues were at play. This realization fueled my desire to create positive change in my community and beyond. Despite these challenges, I have learned to persevere and use them as motivation to succeed. I have worked hard to maintain good grades and stay involved in extracurricular activities, and I have learned to speak up and advocate for myself and others who may not have a voice. Obtaining a degree in software engineering is a dream that has been with me for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was always fascinated with the way technology worked and I knew that I wanted to be a part of the industry that was driving it forward. As I grew older, my passion for technology only grew stronger and I became more and more determined to make a career out of it. Finances have always been a major obstacle for me. Despite working hard to save money and seeking out every opportunity for financial aid that I could find, the cost of tuition and living expenses has always seemed insurmountable. The burden of student debt is a real concern for me, as it would not only hinder my ability to achieve my goals but also limit my ability to provide for my future family. This scholarship would be a game-changer for me. It would allow me to focus on my studies and personal development without the added stress of financial insecurity. It would also allow me to give back to my community by using my education and skills to make a positive impact. As a software engineer, I hope to use my skills to create innovative solutions that improve the lives of people in my community and beyond. I want to be a part of a movement that brings about positive change and helps to level the playing field for underrepresented groups. With the help of this scholarship, I believe that I can achieve these goals and create the future of my dreams.

In my upbringing, I enjoyed listening to numerous genres of music including Rap, Japanese Pop, and Gospel, since my mother was in my Church Choir, growing up I grew a fonding of that music. Since my mom would often catch me overhearing her gospel album mixes, she suggested I should join the junior church choir for children, I took her word and have been performing with the choir every Sunday. I enjoyed listening to music so much that in 8th grade at age 13, I decided to try and produce music myself. To begin my venture into producing, I started diving into the complex structures and settings of my recording software. The different sets of notes, scales, and instruments were all profoundly advanced to my inexperienced ears, and because of this, I struggled with producing on my first few attempts. Although with these struggles, I knew, if I put hours of extreme dedication to this task, I could excel like the artists I listen to musically wise. As the years went on, I grew more comfortable and confident in creating music, now I produce instrumentals for my friends or local artists that make music around my area. By me dedicating a good percentage of my focus to my interest in music, I used the work ethic I gained from that experience to focus on my academics because learning new hobbies taught me how important my education is. My educational goals for computer science are multifaceted, as I am interested in a variety of areas within the field. First and foremost, I hope to gain a strong foundation in computer science principles, including algorithms, data structures, programming languages, and computer architecture. With this foundation, I plan to explore more specialized topics, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis. I am also interested in using my education in computer science to make a positive impact on the world. Specifically, I hope to use my skills to develop technology that can address pressing global issues, such as climate change, health care, and education. I believe that computer science has the power to create innovative solutions to these problems, and I want to be a part of that process. Finally, I hope to use my education in computer science to pursue a successful career in the field. Whether I work as a software engineer, a data scientist, or a research scientist, I hope to make meaningful contributions to my field and continue learning and growing throughout my career. Overall, my educational goals for computer science are ambitious, but I am confident that with hard work and determination, I will be able to achieve them.

    Minority Students x Stem Scholarship
As a black man, I have always been fascinated by technology and the endless possibilities it brings. Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by people who encouraged me to explore and learn more about the field. I remember my uncle, who was a computer engineer, would always bring home the latest gadgets and software for me to try out. It was through these experiences that I developed a passion for technology and a desire to learn more about it. Over the years, I have noticed a lack of diversity in the tech industry and have witnessed firsthand the challenges and barriers that people from underrepresented communities face when trying to enter the field. This has motivated me to take action and work towards creating a more inclusive and diverse tech industry. I believe that it is important to address the systemic inequalities and biases that have historically excluded and marginalized people of color. One of the ways that I would like to see the tech industry change is by increasing diversity and inclusion at all levels of the industry, from entry-level positions to leadership roles. This means actively seeking out and hiring candidates from diverse backgrounds, as well as providing opportunities for career advancement and leadership development for those already working in the industry. In addition to increasing diversity and inclusion within the industry, I believe that it is important for tech companies to be more socially and morally responsible in their products and practices. This includes considering the potential impacts of technology on marginalized communities and taking steps to mitigate any negative consequences. It also means being more transparent about the data that is collected and used by tech companies, and ensuring that privacy and security measures are in place to protect the personal information of all consumers. As a society, we have a moral obligation to ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources. This includes the tech industry, which has the power to shape the future and shape how we communicate and interact with the world around us. Inclusivity in the tech industry is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures that a diverse range of perspectives and experiences are represented in the development and creation of new technologies. This can lead to more innovative and effective solutions that better serve the needs of all members of society. Additionally, excluding certain groups from the tech industry perpetuates systemic inequalities and perpetuates the cycle of disadvantage for those communities. It is important for the tech industry to be inclusive to break down these barriers and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Ultimately, my goal as a black man in the tech industry is to use my voice and my position to promote change and drive positive impact. By working to create a more diverse and inclusive tech industry, and by holding tech companies accountable for their actions, I hope to make a difference and help create a more equitable and just society for all.
Norman H. Becker Integrity and Honor Scholarship
To me, integrity means being honest, sincere, and true to oneself and one's values. It means acting with integrity means acting with honesty, fairness, and consistency, and it means being true to one's principles and beliefs. I have always tried to live my life with integrity, and I can think of several examples from my childhood where I showed honor and integrity. One example that stands out in my mind is when I was in elementary school and I found a lost wallet on the playground. I knew that the wallet belonged to someone else, and I knew that it was the right thing to do to turn it into the lost and found. But at the same time, I was tempted to keep the wallet and the money inside. After all, I was just a kid and I didn't have much money of my own. Despite these temptations, I knew that it was the right thing to do to turn in the wallet. I knew that it was the honest and fair thing to do, and I knew that it was the right thing to do to be true to my values and beliefs. So, I turned in the wallet, and I was proud of myself for doing the right thing. Another example of how I showed honor and integrity as a child is when I was in middle school and I was part of a group project for a history class. I was given the task of researching and writing a portion of the project, and I worked hard to do a good job. However, when it came time to present the project, I made a mistake and presented the wrong information. I knew that this was not the right thing to do, and I knew that it was important, to be honest about my mistake. So, I fessed up and told my classmates and my teacher about my mistake. Although it was difficult to admit my mistake, I knew that it was the right thing to do, to be honest, and fair.
James Lynn Baker II #BeACoffeeBean Scholarship
One issue affecting low-income communities in America that I would like to see changed is gun violence. In America, low-income communities often have higher rates of gun violence compared to more affluent communities, and this is a problem that has far-reaching consequences for public health, safety, and overall quality of life. To address this issue, I would work to create a comprehensive plan that seeks to address the root causes of gun violence in low-income communities. This could include programs like increasing funding for violence prevention programs and community-based organizations that serve these communities, implementing stricter gun control laws, and providing resources and support for individuals at risk of committing gun violence. One specific policy measure that should be implemented to address gun violence in low-income communities is the expansion of access to mental health services. Many low-income communities face challenges in accessing mental health care, due to factors such as lack of insurance, lack of availability of mental health providers, and stigma surrounding mental illness. By expanding access to mental health services, we can help more people to get the care they need and reduce the risk of gun violence. This could involve increasing funding for mental health clinics and counseling services in low-income communities, providing resources and support for individuals to access mental health care, and implementing policies that address barriers to care, such as lack of insurance coverage. By taking these steps, we can create a more supportive and healthy community and reduce the risk of gun violence. Another policy measure that could be implemented to address gun violence in low-income communities is the implementation of community-based violence prevention programs. These programs seek to address the root causes of violence and promote positive conflict resolution and anger management skills in the community. They can be particularly effective in low-income communities, where there may be fewer resources and support available to address violence. Examples of community-based violence prevention programs include mentorship programs, conflict resolution training, and community-based mediation programs. By implementing these types of programs, we can create a more peaceful and harmonious community and reduce the risk of gun violence. In addition to these policy measures, it is also important to raise awareness about the issue of gun violence and its disproportionate impact on low-income communities. This could involve working with local organizations and advocacy groups, using social media and other platforms to mobilize support and awareness, and engaging with community leaders and policymakers to advocate for change. Another way to address gun violence in low-income communities is to invest in programs that promote economic opportunity and mobility. Many low-income communities face challenges such as high unemployment, lack of access to education and job training, and limited economic opportunities. By investing in programs that address these issues, we can create a more stable and prosperous community and reduce the risk of gun violence. In conclusion, gun violence is a significant issue affecting low-income communities in America, and it is a problem that has far-reaching consequences for public health, safety, and overall quality of life. To address this issue and create a positive change, it is important to implement a comprehensive plan that strives to address the root causes of gun violence. By working together and taking action, we can create a positive change and improve the lives of people in these communities.
