Not only have I known that i wanted to be an anesthesiologist since I was five but so did my whole family. My mom had a surgery that she had to bring me in because we didn’t have a baby sitter. As I sat there waiting the anesthesiologist came in to talk to my mom about what he was going to give her and all his little important tidbits and I was hooked. I talked to that doctor for probably half an hour at least and ever since then I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Now we’re in the process of executing. As I went to high school I knew I wanted to get ahead somehow. Show my hard work and dedication and make the 8 years of university and med school a little easier on myself. So, I started taking college classes and realized I had the opportunity to potentially graduate high school with my associates degree! And that is exactly what I did. While being a three sport athlete playing hockey, volleyball, and basketball, and a full time high school student, I became I full time college student. To reach my goals I had a few 20+ credit semesters which were grueling but I did it. A week before I graduated high school I walked the college stage receiving my associates degree in General Sciences. This has allowed me to be significantly ahead of the game because my degree transferred to the University of Wyoming and now as a freshman I am taking Junior level classes and expected to graduate with my bachelor’s in two years.
I started my first semester of university with my degree choice being biology. Which isn’t a bad option I just realized I really don’t like learning about plants. At all. It’s awful. And lucky for me it didn’t match up for the criteria for the MCAT. Therefore, at semester I knew I needed to change my degree and I was majorly struggling between physiology or microbiology because they both fit the criteria and were just better matches for me. So, when I went home I talked to my physical therapist who had just graduated from UW and learned he got his degree in physiology and loved it. His passion for the subject drew me in and I was hooked! I knew that physiology was the choice for me.
I’m about to start my first semester as a physiology major and I couldn’t be more ecstatic. I will tell anyone who will listen about my path and I can’t wait to see my passion develop. After university I plan on going to med school, hopefully in Washington, and then come back to Wyoming and work here to give back to the communities that got me to where I want to be. I am so thankful for everyone who influenced me to dive into my love of science and medicine and I hope that I am making them all proud!
