Janean D. Watkins Aspiring Victim's Rights Advocate Scholarship
In the heart of Tennessee, amidst a backdrop of growing social unrest and inequality, a 33-year-old political activist embarked on a journey that would not only redefine their own destiny but also inspire a wave of change across the state and beyond. As the first person in my family to attend college, my path was never destined to be conventional. Originally aspiring to study architecture, my life took a sharp turn when I was compelled to embrace my true identity, leading to my expulsion from missionary service due to my LGBTQ identification. This pivotal moment set the stage for my deep-rooted involvement in LGBTQ advocacy, both within the church and the corporate world. My foray into the world of political activism began with a significant undertaking - persuading my employer to stand against LGBTQ discrimination bills in the Tennessee Legislature. This monumental effort resulted in my employer becoming the first public company in Tennessee's history to lobby against such discriminatory bills. The success of this initiative was not just a personal victory but a testament to the power of corporate influence in championing social justice. This experience ignited a passion within me for the political process, fueling my desire to effect change at a higher level. My commitment to advocacy took a new turn when I challenged the LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce's decision to admit Core-Civic, a for-profit prison operator, into its membership. I argued that their inclusion should be contingent upon demonstrating good standing in terms of ethical practices and social responsibility. This stance, while morally justified, was not without consequences. It led to retaliation from my employer, a stark reminder of the price often paid for standing up for what is right. However, instead of deterring me, this experience propelled me to launch my first bid for public office, running for the U.S. Senate in Missouri. My journey has been shaped by a multitude of experiences that have reinforced my commitment to advocacy and justice. From witnessing the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community to understanding the complexities of corporate ethics, each experience has deepened my understanding of the societal issues we face. My passion for constitutional law and advocacy is driven by a firm belief in the principles of our Republic and the need to maintain a system of checks and balances that leans towards a just and equal vision of the United States of America. As I stand at the threshold of this new chapter, I am seeking support to further my education and deepen my expertise in constitutional law and advocacy. This scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it is an opportunity to equip myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue my fight for equality and justice. My journey is a testament to the impact one individual can have in challenging the status quo and advocating for change. I am committed to using my education and experiences to contribute positively to our society and to be a voice for those who are often unheard. My path has been unconventional, challenging, and deeply rewarding. From architecture to activism, from being ousted for my identity to running for public office, each step has been a leap towards creating a more equitable world. This scholarship is not just an investment in my education; it is an investment in the future of advocacy and social justice.
