As I think about my goals in a medical career, I'm driven by the desire to make healthcare more accessible and personalized. I aim to become not just a skilled physician but also an advocate for patients from diverse backgrounds, ensuring they receive culturally competent care. Increasing racial diversity in healthcare is a goal close to my heart because it's about more than just representation; it's about providing equitable care and understanding the unique health challenges different communities face. By having a diverse medical workforce, we can improve patient-doctor communication and trust, which is crucial for effective treatment. Diverse healthcare teams are also more likely to understand and respect cultural differences in health practices and beliefs, which can significantly impact patient outcomes. For instance, a doctor who understands the cultural significance of certain diets or traditional remedies can integrate this knowledge into their treatment plans, leading to more effective and respectful healthcare. Moreover, increasing racial diversity in healthcare can help address the systemic health disparities that exist today. Studies have shown that patients from minority backgrounds often receive lower-quality care and have worse health outcomes. This is unacceptable and highlights the urgent need for a medical workforce that reflects the diversity of the population it serves. Having more healthcare professionals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups can help to bridge this gap, offering insights into how to better serve their communities and advocate for necessary changes in the healthcare system. In terms of why it's important, it's clear that a diverse medical workforce can lead to better health outcomes for all. When doctors come from various racial and ethnic backgrounds, they bring different perspectives and experiences that can lead to more innovative and effective healthcare solutions. It also helps in medical research, as a diverse team of researchers is more likely to consider a wide range of factors that could affect health, leading to more comprehensive and inclusive studies. Lastly, increasing racial diversity in healthcare can inspire future generations. When young people see doctors who look like them, it can encourage them to pursue careers in medicine, creating a virtuous cycle of representation and opportunity. This can help break down the barriers that have historically prevented people from underrepresented groups from entering the medical field, leading to a more diverse and dynamic healthcare landscape. In conclusion, my goals for a medical career are deeply intertwined with the importance of increasing racial diversity in healthcare. It's about building a system that delivers the best possible care to every patient, regardless of their background. It's about research that takes into account the full spectrum of human diversity. And it's about inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals to continue this vital work.

Have you ever been passionate about a career choice, and you knew it was much more than a career? But more of a calling or even your destiny? This is how I feel about becoming a pediatrician. My name is Timmia Harrington, I am a high school senior at Martin Luther High School, in Greendale, Wisconsin. My passion, even since I was a young child, I have always had the desire to work with children and a desire to help them grow. I’ve had this strong desire because young people are a joy to be around, and as children grow older, their personalities begin to develop, their character traits start to show, and they become individuals. I remember as a young child going to the doctor and being so excited, my doctors made it easy to get shots and made my visit fun. I was always ready for the end of my visit when I got stickers for being so brave when I received my shots. Seeing how you’ve made such a positive impact on their health will put you at peace. Becoming a pediatrician; with the help of this scholarship, I know that I can achieve just that! Being able to achieve this goal will be a dream come true for me because I am a first-generation college student, and my education has always been something I have taken seriously. Without an education, people might have a difficult time getting ahead and it provides stability in life. By being well-educated you increase your chances for better career opportunities, and your options are not extremely limited. Having to watch someone work a job they do not have a passion for has never been easy, they experience stress, depression and instability. Throughout my medical career, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by being the best pediatrician I can be and taking the right precautions to provide the best care for my patients. Being able to provide information about health, safety, nutrition, fitness needs, development and care for a patient at an early age can start them off healthy as they grow into an adult, this can help the child and the family be assured and help them gain the strength to carry on with life, knowing that the health of their child is of a high standard. This will be good for everyone because if one person is healthy, and everyone around them is healthy, it’s a healthy community and a healthy world.

The nurse spent so much time listening and providing knowledge to my parents, answering as many questions as they could. I remember being so excited, the nurses made it easy to get shots and made my visit fun. I was always ready for the end of my visit when I got stickers for being so brave when I received my shots. During this last semester, of my senior year, I completed a five-week Nursing Assistant training course and am now a Certified Nursing Assistant. This course has helped me at the age of 17, learn the basic skills to care for residents who need assistance.

During this pandemic, it was made known to me that while everyone was getting laid off, and a search for jobs was so high, a need for health care workers was even higher. Many say that the United States of America is a nation for women and children, we protect our babies. Pediatricians are doctors who focus on the health of infants, children and young adults. Pediatricians focus on preventative care, diagnosing and treating infections, injuries, and diseases. Pediatric care starts at the birth of the baby until they are fully developed adults, which means this doctor watches their patient grow. My name is Timmia Harrington, I am a high school senior at Martin Luther High School, in Greendale, Wisconsin.
