I live in a small rural town called Reedley in California where everyone knows everybody. There are always connections between each other even if you think you have no relation with someone. My community service has enabled me to build interactions with my fellow peers and community leaders. I am involved in my community mostly through my activities at my high school. I am a part of clubs that practice peace and community among each other such as Gay, Straight, Alliance and Students for Peace club. These clubs promote a pacifist mindset while also encouraging students to interact with others in a judge-free zone no matter how they may identify. These values I practice in my clubs are also how I have become involved in community service. I participate annually in an event where volunteers lay wreaths for veterans at our town cemetery in December. I think it is a great opportunity to honor the men and women who have served in my community especially since I understand their sacrifice with my older brother in the Marine Corps. Another event that reflects my personal morals and values is called "Alive After 5" that took place in Downtown, Reedley. The event was held to focus on mental health awareness in the month of May that I participated as a member of Students for Peace club. We created a flyer with an acronym of Peace to effectively cope with mental health and relax like meditating. These experiences have enabled me to grow as a person who gives back to their community in the form of service. Giving back to my community has shaped my future goals in becoming certain I want to continue to actively participate in community service as a member of my community. I want to be able to make a difference in the lives of my friends and neighbors who I interact with daily even if it is a small gesture.
My college educational goals encompass my community because of my career aspirations. I want to pursue a career in teaching, specifically as a high school teacher. I am a bit uncertain on the subject but I am contemplating between mathematics or history. I will be serving my community no matter what decision I agree on for the subject I will teach because I will be nurturing the minds of the future young leaders in my community. I plan to major in either history or mathematics to obtain my bachelors degree and begin teaching soon after. Although a teacher only needs a bachelor's degree to start teaching among other aspects, I will pursue education beyond that with a masters degree. In order to gain insight into the classroom setting, I plan to work through an internship at a local school to learn first hand the skills a teacher must possess. I am currently working at a local elementary school as a student intern so my experience right now will be invaluable once I am in college striving towards my end goal.
These experiences in my community and goals I have for myself are what fuel me to pursue higher education in the future.
