Kim Moon Bae Underrepresented Students Scholarship
In my family, I hold the endearing nickname of "the owl," not because I stay up late or constantly ask, "Who? Who?" but rather because of my parents' ingenious way of remembering the language-learning app with the distinctive green owl—Duolingo.
I vividly recall those weekends spent dressed in white polo shirts and black slacks, reluctantly attending Vietnamese Sunday school in my Californian home. From Kindergarten to 2nd grade, I immersed myself in learning Vietnamese, delving into village myths and exploring the nuances of dialects. However, an abrupt job change forced my parents to relocate to the South, stripping away the joys of delicious Asian cuisine, mouthwatering boba drinks, and formal Vietnamese language instruction. Nevertheless, my determination to maintain fluency in my native language remained unwavering.
I turned to Duolingo as my virtual language tutor, striving for that satisfying bell chime signaling my correct answers. I also indulged in Vietnamese soap operas, using them as a means to immerse myself further in the language. My motivation for language proficiency extended beyond personal goals—it was rooted in my desire to assist my immigrant parents and make a positive contribution to our local community.
What started as a family-oriented endeavor soon blossomed into a passion project serving the wider community. I began volunteering my translation skills, rendering news articles, emails, and legal documents into Vietnamese for the elderly. I accompanied individuals to doctor appointments, acting as an interpreter and ensuring they comprehended medical diagnoses. Additionally, I tutored second-generation children in Vietnamese literature while assisting their parents with English grammar. Our home even became a hub for Vietnamese karaoke nights, fostering a sense of camaraderie within our tight-knit community.
My acts of service were not driven by a desire to accumulate community service hours or seek recognition. They were deeply rooted in my personal experiences with my parents. Back in California, our expansive Vietnamese community provided invaluable assistance with paperwork and homework. However, upon moving to Mississippi, we discovered a lack of such pre-existing support networks. Armed with my ability to speak both English and Vietnamese fluently, I realized I could fill this void and provide a community resource for immigrant families like my own.
With Vietnamese flowing effortlessly out of one ear and English out of the other, it's no wonder that I've become known as the little owl employed by Duolingo. My language proficiency has become a bridge, enabling me to empower others, foster understanding, and uplift immigrant families in my community.
Looking ahead, my dedication to cultural preservation and community support has been further fueled by my experiences. As I pursue my studies, I aim to leverage my interdisciplinary skills, merging my passion for languages and my newfound love for Behavioral Economics and Data Analytics. I aspire to promote sustainable practices within major corporations, ensuring they embrace diversity and empower underrepresented communities.
My journey has allowed me to embrace my cultural heritage and utilize language as a powerful tool for empowerment. By extending a helping hand to immigrant families in my community, I strive to bridge the gap between cultures, fostering understanding, and making a lasting impact. As I continue to pursue my dreams, I am determined to forge a path where language, sustainability, and community converge, creating a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
Corrick Family First-Gen Scholarship
Growing up as the eldest daughter in a family of five, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my parents made to provide my sisters and me with better opportunities, particularly in education. Leaving their homeland and immigrating to a foreign country with little support, they put their own career aspirations on hold to work in nail salons and ensure that we could pursue higher education. Their selflessness and determination have always inspired me, and I am driven to repay their sacrifices by fulfilling their biggest dream – finding and following my dream career.
My journey took a significant turn when I entered college, initially aiming to become an Environmental Engineer. However, it was during a course on game theory that I discovered my true passion for Behavioral Economics and Data Analytics. The thrill of delving into complex problem sets and unraveling puzzles using innovative approaches captivated me. Not only did my college experience allow me to find my own path and make a meaningful impact on the world, but it also fulfilled my parents' dream of attaining higher education, a dream they were unable to pursue themselves.
Winning the Corrick Family First-Gen scholarship would be transformative for me. As a low-income student, I have had to take on various odd jobs on campus to cover textbook fees and the high cost of living in Cambridge. However, with the generous support of this scholarship, I could reduce my work hours and dedicate more time to my favorite college hobby – providing free consulting services to sustainable companies through CBE, a non-profit organization on campus.
Passionate about environmental conservation and drawn to the field of behavioral economics, I thrive on the challenges and problem-solving opportunities that CBE offers. Assisting companies committed to sustainability aligns perfectly with my values and allows me to apply my interdisciplinary skills. This newfound extracurricular pursuit has motivated me to channel my education towards collaborating with major corporations, where I can influence and shape sustainable corporate and manufacturing policies.
Expanding my knowledge of behavioral economics and leveraging data analytics, I aspire to make a significant impact in the corporate world's approach to sustainability. By partnering with influential companies, I can contribute to the development of environmentally conscious practices that drive positive change on a larger scale.
The journey to achieving my dreams has been filled with hard work, determination, and the unwavering support of my family. The Corrick Family First-Gen scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial burdens I face but also provide me with the freedom to dedicate myself fully to my studies and extracurricular activities. With this opportunity, I can pursue my passions wholeheartedly and make a lasting impact through sustainable initiatives.
