Being an American have different meanings. To me being an American is the ability to pursue anything that I want to do. The American dream can be anything you want it to be. Through hard work and just going out to get it done. I have the freedom to fight any cause and the potential to have my voice heard. People in other countries do not have that ability. With all the problems America is facing during this particular time If the people's voices cannot be heard than what is the point of having free speech or the ability to speak out. There is a certain pride with being American. Nobody is truly better than anybody and also Everyone has the chance to better themselves. Someone born into a poor family has the same opportunities through school to put themselves in a better position. Everyone has equal opportunity. Through hard work and not being complacent someone can make their situation better. My parents were not born into a rich family. They grew up on small farms and growing up they did not have everything. My dad did not graduate college but he did build a construction company from nothing and was very successful. My mom put herself through college with no help from her parents and is now making almost six figures. Americans have the ability to be equal no matter their situation. Everything in my life I have worked for. I am currently enrolled to the University of Wyoming. I will not be receiving any help from my parents but because I am an American I will figure it out and work my butt off to achieve my goals and realize my dreams. I want to be a High school shop class teacher and make a difference to the future generations. I want to instill in kids through the shop class that they have the ability to build and make anything they want. I want the kids that may not have the most money feel equal in the sense that a kid in the same class that has expensive clothes and a really nice car that that particular student can build his own. I want to give every student equal opportunity. Equal opportunity I think is the best definition to what it is to be an American. Through hard work and never giving up is what it truly means To Be An American.

I wrote a poem. As the darkness sweeps across the land I sit in a classroom that’s bold and bland The darkness sweeps us students under the rug, yet the silence we hear is loud We walk in the valleys and people talk in our ear, but we hear nothing Our ears are toned to the silence and it turns into a reliance that we hear inside The tides sometimes turn and the broom sweeps in the light, but it feels too bright and we walk back to the shadows in defeat The expectations the light brings is bright, yet we are afraid to fight back the tears and anger that we feel To heal we walk in the silence in anguish of falling short to distort the cries we feel inside Our demise may be short or many years down the road with grey hairs and children But the burden we wish to go away Always finds a way to stay Many of us pray for the courage and times to rise through the darkness and the silence with cries of pain and anguish Just to realize the darkness is in our mind, and that we, let it inside The broom is like our thoughts and pride Yet being happy is just to the side and life can be as short or as strenuous as our mind decides The lowest points in some people's lives is just one of many short strides, to the highest, most fulfilling times The broom will knock us down it will pick us back up just hit us in the mouth again Our smallest steps are our toughest strides Beating the broom back fighting tooth and nail just to survive and yet the happiness is just to the side We walk through these grand valleys alone But if we turn to either side, we will see the eyes of others in silence we all walk and roam alone on these paths yet we are not alone If we change our thoughts and we all stand to fight these demons, we will not all be deaf to the tones We will hear the screams and come together to lock arms in these streets To break the broom and darkness that sweeps The clouds will simmer and fade to let the happiness and light in for us to feel its glorious warmth and light because happiness is just to the side. I personally think that all of the depression and anxiety in this world is caused by unneeded stress. We as a society need to change the perspective of how we look at things and how we try to combat these illnesses. As a society we need to start focusing on the good things in this world not all of the bad things. We can't totally dismiss the bad things because we need to be informed but on the local and national news there is hardly ever any positive news and that needs to change. The world does not need to be a dark place because the sun shines somewhere everyday.
