My aim as an illustration student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) right now is to graduate with a strong portfolio in order to move into the art industry. But my dream is more than personal success - I want to be the owner and operator of a free art school in a less-than-ideal community. This mission has a lot to do with my love for teaching art and being a good community servant. Education is in my DNA, with the majority of my extended family being in education. To do so, I’ve mapped out a step-by-step roadmap to get there. To begin with, once I’m done with SCAD, I’m going to get my hands dirty in the industry, at a gallery or art studio. It will not only let me further work as an artist, but it will also give me some practical tips on how a art business should be run. During that time, I’ll be doing some research in underprivileged communities where art education isn’t the priority. These studies will include learning what these communities need, what is and isn’t available to teach art, and who or what might provide allies/partners for the free art school. After enough time has passed and a lot of research, I will be able to start organizing the free art school. It will be by finding a location for the school, procuring materials and technology, recruiting art teachers, and crafting a curriculum that is relevant to the community. Resources: Building a free art school will take a lot of time and money. Obtaining a site for the school will be the most important and expensive part of the project. The school will also have to get art equipment, supplies and curriculum for the children to use. My beginning budget will begin around $25,000 a year for rent and supplies. The free art school, as I will seek to fund it, is not purely by grant, but rather by donation and, possibly, a partnership with local businesses or organizations that also believe in arts education. It will be very important to develop a specific budget so that we can see if it is financially possible for the project and that we have enough to keep the school going. When this plan is implemented also needs to be timed. It will be important to develop a plan of when everything is due (which milestones and dates are for each part of the project). This will allow us to make it all go efficiently and have the free art school opening for the public in the first place. Lastly, being able to consider all possible routes will be key to making this plan work. This could include partnering with other community agencies, seeking support from people who have run education programs, and always checking in and updating the program as the community changes. Finally, establishing and running a free art school in a marginalized community will be a long-term project that will take time, planning, and collaboration. Having a very specific roadmap in place with the resources, budget, timing, and all routes to succeeding, I know I can accomplish this and impact the lives of more aspiring artists out there.

My love for drawing and creating art started when I was young. It began with a passion and fascination for reading comic books and watching animated shows and movies. Since I did not have any local art schools in my community to go to, I learned how to draw by watching some of my favorite artists on YouTube, such as Jorge Jimenez, Marco Checchetto, and Dan Mora, all comic book artists. Since then, art has always been my passion, calling, and way of connecting with the world around me. I began by drawing and painting on traditional mediums, then as I got older, I progressed in the world of creating art on digital devices, primarily on an Apple iPad, the best gift my supportive parents could have ever given me. I have set ambitious goals for myself and my future career path. Currently, I am majoring in illustration while minoring in sneaker design, and I am actively involved in three student clubs on campus. My involvement in various SCAD student clubs has given me a strong sense of community involvement and has fueled my passion for giving back. My passion lies in creating editorial art for a company like the New Yorker as a profession and painting murals for local communities as a way to give back. Additionally, coming from a low socioeconomic area, my long-term goal is to start an art school in a predominantly minority area where there is a lack of funding. As a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia, digital artwork and sneaker design is a part of my coursework, but more importantly, I love to paint and create murals. Unfortunately, it’s not a part of the curriculum, and it’s a lifelong passion that fuels my aspiration to reach beyond my academic career. I’m one of the few in my family not to pursue an education career, and education is deeply rooted in my family. I think, in some way, there's a part of me that likes teaching, too. Outside of my academic and career goals as an editorial illustrator, I have decided to use my art to give back to underserved and underrepresented communities. My long-term goals are to paint the city with positivity, create murals around the city, and open an art-free school for the underprivileged. I want to use my art to not only satisfy my passion, but also contribute to the development of myself and my community! I currently serve as the president of the Illustration Club, and I am also an active member of the SCAD Atlanta Skate Club and Black Student Association. Although most of my academics involve creating digital artwork, I'm very passionate about painting as well. I especially like and enjoy painting indoor and outdoor murals. While in high school, I painted some of my fellow senior parking spaces as parking spaces for teachers and other school staff members. I also have painted large murals for my high school and private businesses. In a world that values material accomplishments over spiritual values, art can be a source of empowerment for individuals and communities. By empowering people to give voice to their stories and struggles, art can allow expression of what might not otherwise be heard by those groups. Murals communicate transformation and restoration. They have the power to change the energy of a place and what things are looked upon in that space. If we have the capability to paint a mural and change the aesthetic of a space, and then, through the act of creating, instill hope, and subsequently, the community members have hope when they see the mural, then that energy might be carried into their local community and make them feel better about the space around them. Creating murals for the community and bringing people together through art in cities is my personal mission. Murals should not be considered just as paintings on walls but as stories, communication, and points for interaction. As we begin to adorn our urban spaces with colors, we create a collective story that lifts and inspires our residents and aids in urban redevelopment and multicultural growth. Art is one of the most important tools of education and the development of communities because it helps to communicate, learn, and grow. Art and art-integrated education supports learning by helping students conceive of challenging questions, collect data, and draw conclusions. Art supports emotional development, as well as cultural understanding, through appreciation and understanding. If art can find its way into every curriculum, students might become more engaged, their needs be met in varied ways, relationships be strengthened, cultural understanding flourish, and community being built through active engagement. I want to re-emphasize the role of art in the education and the development of communities because I believe that art plays a significant role in promoting the development of different communities and individuals. It should be made accessible to people at all levels of learning. An art-free school is somewhat of a misnomer but is meant to emphasize the ‘free’ as in this instance. By creating a school that takes away opportunities to learn from the disadvantaged, there will be some sense of closure to whatever gap in learning art that they were deprived of by providing enough resources and opportunities for the underrepresented youth to use and hone their artistic abilities. Within this type of institution, the underprivileged wouldn’t be oppressed by money as they would get to experience a safe, artistic haven that would ignite their artistic passions and desires. This is something that I would love to aspire to and achieve in the future – that is my way of creating a haven that stimulates the artistic dreams of the underprivileged and that art isn’t exclusively for the privileged. It’s for all of us. Painting, as visual art and a universal medium without barriers of speech and literacy, is an incredibly potent tool for social change. As a visual artist, I have the responsibility to use themes and imagery in my paintings to address issues of the social environment, deconstruct some of the stereotypes that exist, address issues of inclusivity and visibility in society, and use the medium to strengthen social awareness and advocacy for social change. In my capacity as a painter, I can participate in these causes by bringing the medium into the social platform and representing varied forms of social experiences. Pursuing art outside of my course is not just something that I have a passion for but rather a responsibility because I have a desire to contribute meaningfully to the various platforms that would assist, in my own way, in creating avenues for the dreams of young artists, empowering communities, spreading positivity, and creating a space for the arts to be used as a tool to spur much-needed social change. My long-term goals align with the broader community vision of upliftment and self-development as well; thus, in using my talents for the public and social good, I seek to create a symbiotic relationship with my career aspirations and the needs of the community where I grew up through the arts and ultimately embedding art and society.

From my interests to my skills, and from my future career to the way I relax, video games have always been there to contribute to my life. I’ve been gaming since I was a kid, and it has only become a bigger part of my life cycle over time.  One of the most impactful ways that video games have affected my life is that it fosters my passion for art and design. I was first introduced to these colorful, dynamic worlds through video games such as Mario Kart and Lego Batman, and I was astounded by the worlds that developers had created, and at how much of this was a space for creativity and imagination. This led me to want to explore art and illustration as a vehicle for my own expression.  One personal anecdote describing the positive influence of video games on my life would be the video game design summer school sessions I attended at Southern Methodist University (SMU) the summer directly after middle school. My personal experience here was learning how to design my own video games and code them from the bottom up. Perhaps the most memorable video game we produced in this particular setting was a Minecraft game where we were given the ability to customize a world, add building blocks, and code in game events that made the game both challenging and fun for the players.  Flash-forward to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, where I now study illustration while minoring in sneaker design. My gaming hobby has shaped my style, allowing my illustrations to echo the world of game design – from the dazzling, otherworldly backdrops to dynamic and extraordinary character designs.  During the process, there were lots of glitches, which I had to create workarounds for, and mistakes that I had to troubleshoot. With every trial and error, I had to use critical thinking and problem-solving. There were so many things that I didn’t think of or plan for, or just plain hadn’t anticipated that it made me want to say, ‘I’ve had enough!’ So many times I thought I was almost done, but there was always more to do. So at the end of my game, I was so relieved. I was so proud of myself for doing something. I like that can combine my love of art and my love of gaming.  But video games have taught me skills other than an interest in art – I’ve learnt how to think strategically, how to communicate with others for a common goal and how to deal with unexpected events. These skills are being used in my everyday life, as well as at school. I now participate in group discussions more than I used to – and the skills I’ve learnt from Fortnite have helped me in these situations. Video game play also helps me relax and stress reduction when I’m not studying, creating art and participating in student club activities.  Finally, video games have inspired me to pursue my creative goals by making me become a better artist, storyteller, and team-player. My illustration and sneaker design are better than they would have been if I had never played video games. Video gameplay helps me find enjoyment in the experience of drawing and designing. Overall, my life has been greatly influenced by video games, and they have made me who I am today. Playing video games has improved my creativity, social skills, as well as my problem-solving skills. It is due to video games that I have developed an interest in and pursuit of a career in art.

My earliest dream of being an artist was to draw comic books for my favorite heroes. As there were no art schools in my neighborhood, I taught myself to draw by watching content on YouTube from some of my favorite artists, including the comic book authors Stan Lee and Jorge Jimenez. This was my primary outlet for artistic education growing up. To be an artist is to be influenced by nearly anything and everything, and it’s impossible for me to focus on what or who had the biggest impact on me. But for the sake of a list, I give big props to the artists whose work I grew up consuming while I was flipping through the comics I was reading as a teenager. My love for art and illustration deepened further when I became a fan of Marvel Comics and tried to capture the storytelling from the legend Stan Lee and many other incredible comic-book artists. I was engrossed in my drawing pad for days on end, drawing characters that I fell in love with. His stories made me want to be a better artist and be more creative. His approach towards telling stories had a deep impact on me through his belief in the craft of storytelling, and how it can build a connection among people, inspire change and spread positivity. While attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where I’m studying to become an art illustration major, I keep Stan Lee’s contributions to bring diversity and inclusivity to comic books close to me and apply them to my work. I dream of utilizing my talent to advance social change, to make the world more accessible, and to empower all kinds of people to follow their hearts. I am really honored to serve as president of the SCAD Illustration Club this year, as it shows my dedication to creating a community in SCAD that is full of kindness, generosity, and spirit toward students’ individuality and creative drive. I will take inspiration from Stan Lee as I aim to create a community of opportunities where my fellow artists can grow by showcasing their work and gaining insight. Collaborating with others will open up new opportunities to explore artistic methods and creative ideas. I hope to be inspired by my peers and professors in SCAD. Working with others will allow me to expand my artistic craft in practice and style, technique, and medium. I will try my best to make art as good as I can. Therefore, I consider Stan Lee a pivotal influence in shaping everything that I have done and wish to continue to do within my career. Stan Lee can be seen as one of the key influencers in my journey as a black art illustrator who strives to create visually stimulating and socially influencing images and characters. His legacy of being creative and showing ingenuity and diversity has played an essential role in the type of artist that I am and the goals that I aspire to as I pursue my dreams of being an illustrator, community advocate, and mentor to the next generation of artists. In his quest for arts that would uplift and empower the world, Stan Lee has always believed that art and storytelling create a powerful platform that allows everyone to identify and connect with a common shared humanity. Even in my humble capacity as an artist, I endeavor to make Stan Lee's dreams a reality in my little corner of the globe.

I have always loved illustration as a form of storytelling and have always been struck by the way that images can communicate feeling and ideas in a way that words cannot. As a college student, I am interested in editorial illustration and the relationship between art and journalism. I believe that editorial illustration can have real power when it focuses on and draws attention to political and social issues that are difficult to talk about – not only by starting conversations but by changing people’s perceptions of them. I considered studying art illustration with a concentration in editorial illustration because I consider it an important way to use my drawing talents to speak for those who cannot, to bring light to the marginalized and create awareness of cultural issues that go unnoticed, to make social justice a priority and foster introspection on topics that affect the world. Speaking truth to power is one of the most important things for me as an editorial illustrator, because it’s my job to bring attention to people who feel underrepresented or underprivileged. I also want to use art to amplify their voices and help them tell their stories as much as possible. As the president of the Illustration Club at SCAD, I’ve already had the chance to work with fellow artists and activists to produce artwork that brings attention to topics such as racism, gender inequality, and environmental degradation. These experiences have only made me more determined to use art as a tool for social change. I chose to minor in sneaker design because I firmly believe that fashion and artwork hand in hand. After all, a sneaker is a form of expression and self-identity. Through studying sneaker design, I would like to keep my artistic repertoire fresh and come up with new ways to fuse art and design. Overall, my aspiration is to think and work globally but go back to my community and give back. Having an educator and first responder as parents, they instilled in me a desire to serve others. Art education, for example, empowers and provides a voice for those who may not have access to conventional academic facilities. I hope to use my skills to teach art and provide the youth from underprivileged and underserved communities with a voice and encourage them to express themselves. To summarize, I made a decision to major in art illustration with a concentration on editorial illustration, in order to use my art as a tool for social change and advocacy. My work will be an eye-opener for people, to shine a light on the serious social issues that exist, and to provide materials to open up the minds of vulnerable, marginalized communities and highlight their voices. I believe that by combining my passion for art with my community service, I can create a reality in my art that will someday bring about a more inclusive and equitable world for all.

At a very young age, my love for drawing and creating art stems from my great affection and motivation for reading comic books and watching my favorite animated shows and movies. Since there was no art school around in my community, what I did out of passion was to watch my favorite artists on YouTube. Ever since then, art has always been a passion, a calling, and a way of feeling immersed in the world around me. I am currently following my passion at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta. I am a very good student in school too. I’ve made it into the Dean’s List in the fall semester of my freshman year, and I have maintained that status to this day. Academically, I think that there are no obstacles for me as my goal is to follow my passion and be a successful student in that field. My thinking process has allowed me to view any information in my courses creatively and artistically. That has made it more fun to take in the information, but also, I have been able to relate to my courses analytically, synthetically, and holistically to provoke more creativity. This semester, I’m a junior at SCAD and serving as president of the Illustration Club. I am also deeply involved in the Black Student Association. I could use my creative thinking in these organizations to create projects and ideas to follow. I believe art is important for society because of this reason. We often forget that art is a universal language for communication. Any medium of art can convey a feeling, an idea, or an experience that no number of words can ever do. Art is the flame that ignites a conversation between individuals. It is the mirror that challenges your ideologies and biases. It is the bridge that helps us understand each other better. Art and its creators connect people at a standard level of humanity, regardless of where they belong. Art is an opportunity for self-rediscovery in a society that divides and misunderstands itself. Furthermore, art plays a significant role in maintaining our culture and history. We learn about different societies, traditions, and values from art; therefore, it represents reality from the past but still reflects the present. Art promotes the delight of diversity and the appreciation of our heritage. Art is also a visual memory of humankind; through it, we can visualize past and present moments. For me, art also becomes a pure experience form of therapy, a way to express myself, to translate thought, emotion, and experience into a visual language that can impact others and leave a mark. Art can stir emotions, be a force for change, make people think, and move them. I want to resonate with the world and communicate with it, share with others my personal view of the world, and act in this way as a catalyst for their own form of creativity. To conclude, I see art in my life not only as a hobby or a profession but as a vocation and a way of life. Arts transformative power and the ability to inspire, connect, and create a difference. I hope as my journey as an artist continues, allowing my creative talents to spark change and excitement in others. Art, for me in my life, is a voice, a purpose, and a gift.

I have been a fan of LeBron James for as long as I can remember. From his incredible talent on the basketball court to his generosity off the court, LeBron has always been a role model for me. I admire his work ethic, dedication to his craft, and commitment to positively impacting the world around him. One of the main reasons I am a fan of LeBron is his extraordinary philanthropic work. LeBron, a dominant force in the NBA, has used his platform to give back to his community in a truly inspiring way. He has established the LeBron James Family Foundation, which is dedicated to education and youth development. The foundation's most significant achievement is the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, a beacon of hope for at-risk children, providing them with education and support. LeBron's outspoken advocacy for social justice is another reason for my admiration. He has fearlessly used his platform to address issues of racial inequality and police brutality, proving that he's more than just a basketball player. His courage to speak out and inspire change in society is admirable and empowers us all to use our voices for positive change. LeBron's journey to becoming a billionaire with only a high school education is a testament to his determination and resilience. His success is a powerful reminder that hard work, dedication, and perseverance can lead to greatness, regardless of background. His business ventures off the court, such as his partnership with Nike and investments in media and entertainment, are a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and drive for excellence in all aspects of his life. His story is truly inspiring and a testament to the power of resilience. Despite my admiration for LeBron, I do not believe he is basketball's Greatest of All Time (GOAT). That title, in my opinion, belongs to Michael Jordan. Jordan's six championships, incredible scoring ability, and impact on basketball make him the greatest player ever to play the sport. His ability to dominate games, his competitiveness, and his influence on the game's global popularity are unmatched. While LeBron has had an impressive career with multiple championships and MVP awards, he has yet to reach the same level of success as Jordan. Jordan's killer instinct, competitiveness, and ability to perform under pressure set him apart from other players in the NBA's history. His impact on the game goes beyond statistics, as he has inspired generations of basketball players to strive for greatness and push themselves to be their best. In conclusion, my admiration for LeBron James is rooted in his philanthropy work, advocacy for social justice, and inspiring journey to success. However, I do not believe that he is the GOAT in basketball, as that title rightfully belongs to Michael Jordan. LeBron's undeniable impact on the game and society is a testament to his greatness. His influence has reshaped the game and inspired a new generation of players. However, Jordan's legacy as the greatest player remains unmatched.

The Bear is one of my favorite TV series, streaming on Hulu. So much so that I created a piece of artwork for one of my college courses featuring Carmy and Sydney. In my ideal ending for ‘The Bear,’ I envision a dramatic and emotional conclusion that satisfyingly and realistically wraps up the character arcs based on the developments throughout the series. Carmy, the ambitious but flawed chef, ultimately sees his dreams of owning a successful restaurant crumble before his eyes. His ego and toxic behavior towards his colleagues ultimately lead to his downfall, as he loses The Bear due to mounting debts and his inability to work cooperatively with others. This is a harsh lesson for Carmy, who must confront his shortcomings and reevaluate his priorities. Though filled with failures, his journey teaches him the value of humility and collaboration, which he carries forward in his future endeavors. On the other hand, Richie would rise above The Bear's chaos and eventually succeed as a head chef at a renowned restaurant. His dedication, hard work, and natural talent would propel him to new heights in the culinary world, allowing him to fulfill his potential and become a respected figure in the industry. Seeing Richie achieve his goals and overcome his challenges at The Bear upscale restaurant would be a rewarding and heartwarming conclusion to his storyline, making the audience feel satisfied and content with the ending. The determined and passionate cook Sydney would make the difficult decision to leave The Bear and pursue her path in the culinary world. Despite the setbacks and obstacles, Sydney’s resilience and unwavering commitment to her craft led her to open her restaurant, where she showcased her unique talents and established herself as a talented chef. This ending would not only highlight Sydney’s growth and transformation throughout the series but also inspire the audience with her evolution from a struggling cook to a confident and successful entrepreneur, making them feel proud and inspired by her journey. As for The Bear itself, I imagine it closing its doors for good, symbolizing the end of an era for the characters who once called it home. The emotional impact of The Bear’s demise, a bittersweet reminder of the characters' challenges and hardships, adds depth to the ending and resonates with the reader's emotional connection to the series. This emotional resonance with the audience is a key element in creating a satisfying ending. Overall, this ending would satisfy me as a fan because it provides closure for the characters’ arcs and allows them to confront their flaws and mistakes. More importantly, it shows how they learn from these experiences, ultimately finding redemption and fulfillment in their journeys. This emphasis on the characters' growth and the series' key themes of resilience, growth, and the transformative power of the culinary world reinforces the series' message and leaves the audience feeling content and satisfied with the character's fulfillment.

The New Yorker is known for its thought-provoking illustrations and covers that spark conversation and provoke thought. Working for such a prestigious publication would be a career milestone and a platform to share my perspective and contribute to essential conversations through art. On a more personal level, painting murals for local communities is a way for me to give back and beautify public spaces while engaging with those who inhabit those areas. Art can inspire change, foster community, and uplift spirits. By creating murals in underserved neighborhoods, I hope to bring joy, hope, and a sense of pride to those who may not always see themselves represented in traditional art spaces. Looking ahead, my ultimate goal of starting an art school in a predominantly minority area is to create lasting change and empower future generations of artists. By providing access to quality art education, resources, and mentorship, I hope to nurture young talent, foster creativity, and bridge the gap in the arts for historically underserved communities.

As an artist, I have always been fascinated by the beauty and complexity of the world around us. From the intricate patterns found in nature to the vastness of the universe, I have always been drawn to the idea of understanding the mysteries surrounding us. This curiosity has driven me to create art reflecting my fascination with the natural world, such as my series of paintings inspired by the Fibonacci sequence. I seek knowledge and understanding to comprehend the intricacies of our existence better. In pursuing a degree in illustrative art, I've realized that art is about more than just creating visually engaging images. It's a powerful tool for communicating ideas and concepts that prompt thought and inspire change. As an artist, I firmly believe that we, as a society, must strive to understand the nature of our universe better. This understanding can guide us in making informed decisions about the future of our planet and the well-being of all living creatures. One concept that I'm deeply committed to in my artistic endeavors is interconnectedness. I firmly believe that everything in the universe is connected in some way. Acknowledging and respecting these connections, we can better understand the world around us. This interconnectedness is evident in the relationships between humans and nature, different cultures and societies, and even between the smallest particles in the universe. Through my artwork, I strive to promote unity and cooperation among all beings by exploring and highlighting these connections. For instance, in my series of paintings inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, I aim to show how this mathematical pattern, found in nature and the universe, connects all living things beautifully and harmoniously. Another idea that I am passionate about is the concept of mindfulness. In a world constantly bombarding us with distractions and information overload, it is vital to slow down and take the time to engage with the world around us. We can better understand ourselves and our place in the universe through mindfulness practices such as meditation and contemplation. By incorporating these practices into my artistic process, I want to create art that encourages others to take a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with the world in a more meaningful way. One key reason we must deepen our understanding of the universe is the vast array of mysteries and unanswered questions that exist within it. From the universe's origins to the workings of quantum mechanics, countless phenomena continue to challenge our current understanding. By delving deeper into these mysteries, we not only enhance our knowledge of the world around us but also push the boundaries of human knowledge and insight, a task of utmost urgency in our rapidly changing world. Furthermore, understanding the universe can have significant practical applications. Many scientific discoveries and technological advancements have stemmed from our efforts to understand natural phenomena. For example, our understanding of electromagnetism has led to the development of countless technologies that have revolutionized our world. For the longest time, I was pretty much self-taught by watching YouTube videos of some of my favorite artists. As I got a little older, my parents sent me to a local art school during some of my free time. Over the years, I have learned to paint in the traditional sense and create digital art as well. Now that I am in college, I aim to get a degree in Illustration. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the top art schools in the country. Being a young black male, several influences have impacted my decision to pursue superhero animated illustration. First and foremost, representation matters. Growing up, it was rare to see black superheroes depicted in mainstream media. The lack of diversity in the industry only fueled my determination to become a part of it and bring my unique perspective. Secondly, the power of storytelling and its ability to inspire and empower cannot be underestimated. Superhero-animated illustrations have the potential to not only entertain but also serve as a platform for social commentary and cultural representation. My passion for art started around the age of when I was in kindergarten. I vaguely recall watching cartoons, Sonic the Hedgehog in particular. I found myself wanting to draw his character and I was fortunate that my school’s art teacher took time out to show me how to draw. I would spend hours immersed in my little world, completely absorbed by the creative process. As I progressed through middle school and high school, I began enjoying creating art medians that included superheroes along with some of my favorite vocal artists. Art became not just a hobby, but a part of who I am - an outlet for self-expression, a means of communication, and a way to bring beauty to the world. Some of my achievements include my art being featured in a tribute book dedicated to the late YouTuber, Erika. The book is called JoyconBoyz Forever. My art was also featured in a fan-led book in celebration of the 2022 Batman Movie called Unmask the Truth. Just last month, I completed an online fanbook that I put together myself named Welcome to the Spider-Verse: An ATSV Fanzine. I was tasked with evaluating hundreds of illustrations submitted by artists competing to have their artwork published. I was a founding member of M.U.S.E., a group dedicated to discovering artistic talent around my high school. I designed a t-shirt for Alitas De Pollo restaurant in Dallas. The summer before my freshman year of high school, I attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and completed their Discover Animation course. Currently, I am an illustration artist student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and my ultimate career goal is to become a part of the highly creative team at Sony Animation. I want to bring my unique skills and ideas to the table and contribute to creating exceptional visual content that entertains and engages audiences across the globe. At Sony Animation, my goal would be to work on a variety of projects, from feature-length animated films to short videos and social media content. I aspire to tackle different genres and styles, adding to my repertoire and pushing my boundaries as an artist. I became very excited when I came across the Spider-Man Showdown Scholarship opportunity. Spider-Man was the very first superhero that I became enamored with as a young boy. The 2002 Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, was the first superhero movie that I remember watching as a kid. I used to walk around the house shooting imaginary spider webs at my parents. Spider-Man was also the first superhero animated character that I started drawing when I was in elementary school. When I first thought about who my favorite Spider-Man actor was, my mind immediately went to Shameik Moore, the voice of Miles Morales. One reason is that I’m studying illustration and animation at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), so I’m naturally attracted to the Spider-Verse movie sequels. Another reason is that being of African American descent, I can more closely identify with someone with a similar minority background, with Moore being of Jamaican descent. Ultimately after reading all of the scholarship guidelines, I realized that I needed to narrow my favorite Spider-Man character to a “human” on-screen actor. The question of who my favorite Spider-Man actor is and why is very challenging for me. As a huge nerd, I share the same amount of love in all three iterations equally. However, I ultimately have to go with Tom Holland’s portrayal of the beloved wall-crawler. As it’s the one I empathized with and identify with the most. Although I have cherished memories of Tobey and Andrew, I found Tom’s performance to be the most relatable to me. This was because Holland’s movies were released during my high school years, and I believe they significantly impacted me as an individual as I was transforming from boyhood into being a young man. While I was experiencing the ups and downs of high school, I could also see Peter Parker, played by Holland, go through similar experiences on screen. I felt like I was growing up along with Tom’s version of Peter Parker as the movies released. My final school years before entering college were crucial in shaping my identity, much like the theme of many Spider-Man stories. During high school, I faced numerous challenges such as struggling to fit in, being socially awkward, and trying to develop my identity beyond my hobbies. Coincidently, Tom’s character in the story dealt with the same problems. Although I do not possess any super spider powers or a secret identity, it was still nice to identify with the struggles of one of my favorite heroes in pop culture.

Now that I am in college, my goal is to get a degree in Illustration. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the top art schools in the country. To achieve my goal of working for Sony Animation, I will need to attain at least a bachelor's degree in art illustration. Drawing superhero characters has become an integral part of my identity. I am currently enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I have been interested in various forms of art since I was a little boy. I am pursuing a degree in illustration and my dream is to enjoy a career in animation. As a result of my love of art and the respect I had from my peers, I was tasked with designing and painting the majority of student and staff personal parking spaces during my senior year of high school. This mental and labor-intensive challenge was a personal accomplishment that relied upon my overall skills and strengths as an artist. As a designer and painter, I need to have an eye for detail, be creative, and possess effective communication skills in order to complete tasks successfully. One of the most important strengths required as a designer and painter is having attention to detail. When designing and painting parking spaces, I need to consider the allocated space and size, the color scheme, and the background design. I have to ensure that my design reflects the personality of the teacher or student. Having attention to detail also ensures that the final design looks professional and visually appealing. Being creative is another strength necessary for designing and painting these spaces. The design should not only reflect the personality of the teacher or student, but it should also be original and creative. I would involve the teacher or student in the creative process by asking for their input and the elements they want to be included in the design. I would then use my creative skills to integrate these ideas into a cohesive and visually appealing design. Effective communication skills are essential when designing and painting customized parking spaces. Communication with the school authorities, teachers, and students is critical to determine the expectations, requirements, and deadlines. I would need to communicate my ideas clearly to the teacher or student to ensure that I have understood the requirements and have incorporated their expectations in the design. In summary, designing and painting individual and customized teacher and student parking spaces require a set of skills and strengths that include attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication. Having a firefighter parent both influenced my actions growing up and helped shape some of my artistic skills. My dad instilled in me a strong work ethic and encouraged me to pursue my passion in life like he has done over the last twenty-six years as a firefighter/paramedic. My dad is also great at communicating when interacting with the public, whether it be making emergency calls or attending show-and-tell-type events while at work. So, he has always stressed the importance of communication. He told me that if I found a career in something I love that I would never work a day in my life. He encourages me to show a sense of pride in whatever I do, and that mantra is what I strive to live by.
