Science has always been my passion; ever since my earliest science classes, I've loved learning more about the subject. I love learning about chemistry and even more specifically how atoms work. Something about how everything created is made with these utterly microscopic particles completely captivates me. I love chemistry more than any other branch because of how diverse it is. Especially with how much it overlaps with other subjects as well as how it helps us understand our world and discover and solve the mysteries of it.
I started learning about chemistry in my eighth-grade year. Even though it was just a physical science class, my teacher selected a few students who were excelling and gave us extra material. Taking that class in the 8th grade allowed me to earn high school credit while still in middle school. After passing the class, I wanted to continue to learn and did so on my own by doing my research online. Due to the COVID-19 Quarantine, I did 9th grade in virtual school and spent a great quantity of time searching for anything that caught my interest in the topic; from rabbit holes of internet queries to hours upon hours of YouTube documentaries and experiments. While that sated my thirst for knowledge for a short while, I inevitably wanted more: Finally, I got what I wanted in my 10th grade year, post-quarantine, when I took a chemistry class during my first physical year of high school. I was ecstatic about the class and loved to learn and participate in class, especially when going over new topics, concepts, or labs.
The things about chemistry that captivate me are how vast it is and how it can explain everything that happens in our world. Whenever I sit in class and learn a new concept, I learn how it connects to the world that I live in. I learn how I see it and use it in everyday life. I learned just how much I love the subject. Not only do I grasp those things, I learn how it intersects with almost every other thing I've learned in school. Every single other science class that I've ever taken has had some amount of chemistry in it. And not only does it connect to science but to my math classes too.
While I normally have no trouble understanding concepts in class whenever I do I always know that there are two people I can go to. The first is my teacher, Dr. Dass, who has taught me for two years: first in my chemistry class in 10th grade and again in my AP chemistry class in my senior year. And the second is my mother who is a professor of Biology. In fact, every science-related problem I've ever had I've brought to her. When I have problems I know that I can go and talk to her about science any time whether it's at the dinner table while I'm doing homework or even in her office.
Now as I reflect on my passionate journey with science and chemistry, with it being my constant fascination and driving my thirst for learning from quarantine to formal education my love for the subject has only deepened. Its ability to connect concepts to the real world and solve mysteries all around me has been endlessly inspiring, especially with the guidance of mentors like Dr. Dass and my mother. I am looking forward to a future where I can explore a subject that allows me to learn more about the substances that sustain us and the world that we live in.
Gloria Millender "I am 3rd" - J. O. Y. Scholarship
As a high schooler, I found myself in a pivotal moment where I had to make a decision embodying the principles of selflessness and humility. It was during my friend's campaign for class president. Initially, I had considered running myself, but as I observed my friend's passion, charisma, and genuine commitment to serving our school community, I knew he was the better candidate. Despite the temptation to pursue personal glory, I chose to put Jesus first by prioritizing the greater good over my own ambitions.
Throughout the campaign, I threw myself into supporting my friend in every way possible. I helped him devise campaign strategies, organize events, and garner support from our peers. Rather than seeking recognition or advancement for myself, I focused solely on empowering him to showcase his leadership qualities and vision for our school. It was a humbling experience to set aside my own desires and invest wholeheartedly in his success.
On election day, seeing my friend win by a significant margin filled me with an indescribable sense of pride and fulfillment. Knowing that I had played a part in his victory through my selfless support reaffirmed my belief in the importance of prioritizing others over oneself. This experience left a lasting impact on me, reinforcing the value of humility, sacrifice, and service. Going forward, I am committed to living out these principles in all aspects of my life, seeking opportunities to uplift and support those around me, even if it means stepping aside and allowing others to shine. By doing so, I hope to continue honoring my faith and making a positive difference in the world.

Coach "Frank" Anthony Ciccone Wrestling Scholarship
As a varsity wrestler at Sandy Creek High School, my journey has been one of transformation, perseverance, and unforeseen challenges. I vividly remember stepping onto the mat for the first time as a sophomore, weighing in at 190 pounds. Little did I know then the profound impact wrestling would have on my life, both physically and emotionally.
From the outset, I was faced with the daunting task of not only learning the technical aspects of the sport but also reshaping my body and mindset. Shedding weight and building strength became my primary focus as I dedicated myself to the rigorous training regimen demanded by the sport.
The journey was arduous, filled with early mornings, grueling workouts, and moments of self-doubt. But with each practice, each drill, I felt myself growing stronger, both physically and mentally. The camaraderie among teammates and the guidance of coaches provided a support system that bolstered my resolve and fueled my determination to succeed.
Over the course of my high school career, I made steady progress, steadily chiseling away at my weight while honing my skills on the mat. Through sweat, determination, and countless hours of practice, I gradually transformed from a novice wrestler to a varsity contender.
However, just as I was hitting my stride, life threw a wrench in my plans. During my senior year, I faced the devastating loss of my auntie, a beloved family member whose passing left an indelible mark on my heart. As I grappled with grief, I found myself grappling with an impossible decision: to attend her funeral or compete in the area tournament.
In the end, there was no choice. Family came first, and I made the difficult decision to miss the tournament in order to pay my respects and support my loved ones during this challenging time. It was a sacrifice that weighed heavily on my heart, knowing that I was missing out on an opportunity to showcase my hard work and dedication on the mat.
Yet, in the midst of sorrow, I found solace in the memories and lessons learned throughout my wrestling journey. The sport had taught me resilience in the face of adversity, perseverance in the pursuit of my goals, and the importance of family and community in times of need.
As I look back on my high school wrestling career, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences, the friendships forged, and the lessons learned along the way. Wrestling may have shaped me physically, but it is the challenges faced and overcome that have truly defined the person I am today.
