So You Want to Be a Mental Health Professional Scholarship
As a college student, I have always been interested in mental health because of everything I've been through. I feel like I could create a more positive impact by ensuring that people are truly heard not only jsut hearing them but also taking action to help, not only them but others who are going through similar struggles.
When I got my first taste of what "mental health" was, I was 15 years old. The world was at the peak of the COVID pandemic, and I was going through what felt like the worst part of my life. In March 2020, I was constantly in and out of the hospital because I couldn't breathe. It truly felt like there was an elephant sitting on my chest. Doctors would repeatedly ask if I had asthma, and I would always answer no. I never in my life had asthma, for God's sake. I worked out every week because I was in JROTC at the time. They would give me the same medication each time to help with my breathing and symptoms. It honestly became part of my routine for about a year and a half before my mom finally discovered my diagnosis.
Every month, like clockwork, I went to the hospital, and each time, they found something new. I developed hives, sinus infections, a mass in my chest, and equilibrium issues because of the sheer number of medications I was taking. I dealt with brain fog and couldn't function like a regular teenager. My quarantine felt like the worst time ever. Seeing everyone on social media enjoying their lives made me feel like I was missing out. It felt like everyone else was moving forward and getting their licenses, living their lives while I was stuck because my health was holding me back.
I had to monitor everything—how fast I walked or ran, avoiding strenuous activities because I might have an asthma attack. I always had to take 10 extra steps and walk the extra mile to keep up with everyone else because of my medical condition. I couldn't wear or be near strong-smelling scents because they triggered respiratory distress. It was exhausting and frustrating. Everything I wanted to do felt out of reach because of my own body.
When I was around 16, almost 17, I finally found out that I had catamenial anaphylaxis. It's a hormonal disorder that makes your body essentially turn on itself. Every time I got my monthly cycle, I would experience asthmatic episodes, anaphylactic flares, and swelling in my lips, tongue, and face. I had to monitor what I ate constantly—no chocolate, soy, or diary because those foods made my symptoms worse. The crazy part? When I was off my cycle, I could eat those things just fine.
During this time, I struggled internally with my mental health. I kept asking, "Why me, God?" I had been so healthy and full of ambition, with clear goals and dreams for myself. Suddenly, I had to change my entire life and career plans because of a rare condition that only 2% of women have. Started to spiral. I contemplated ending it all because the physical and emotional toll was overwhelming. I saw how much my condition was affecting my family; they were constantly worried, always checking on me, and living in fear of my next flare-up. I made me feel like a burden, like I was dragging everyone else down with me.
I felt helpless and started pushing everyone away but in due time when i got back on my feet I realized that this only made me stronger.
