My career goals after finishing undergrad at Dillard University is to further my education by going to graduate school and earning my master's degree in Clinical Psychology. During the years that I am in graduate school I plan to either become a school counselor or a high school psychology teacher. Becoming a school counselor would not only allow me the experience I need in the field for graduation requirements, but it will also give me a chance to help middle school/ high school students with mental stability, and simply having someone to talk to about the stresses of growing up. As children grow from pre-teens to young adults, the experiences and changes they have can become overwhelming and sometimes they need an outside person looking in to get things off your chest or seek advice. My high school counselor did just that for me. I want to return the favor to as many students as I can. I feel I can have an immense impact on students by encouraging students to invest in their mental health, and breaking the stigma of therapy. Along the way I could even spark some students’ interests in becoming a psychology majors if they so choose to go to college. My high school counselor was who helped me find my interest in psychology and I believe that having a committed counselor/teacher could help them as well. With my master's degree I will serve my community by aiding them in treating their mental health issues, as well as raising awareness to caring for mental health to avoid more severe diagnosis.
