Throughout my time at Indiana University I have been introduced to many new opportunities including work, service and extracurricular. I recently finished my sophomore year studying at The Kelly School of Business majoring in Finance and Supply Chain Management. I am currently the Pearson Campus Ambassador for Indiana University where I mediate conversations about product feedback between my local representative and Indiana professors providing the student perspective.
My interpersonal communications skills also helped me to join the sorority, Pi Beta Phi, where I have met like minded women.
As for other extracurricular activities, service work is extremely rewarding. I volunteer as a PADI certified scuba diver to further the efforts of Oracabessa Fish Sanctuary towards restoring Jamaica's coral reefs. I, alongside other coral gardeners have worked to out-plant 2,000 pieces of coral every 6 months.
I have a twin sister who attends The George Washington University, so my parents are aiding two children financially in college at the same time. These costs have only increased since Covid with the necessity of separate living , grocery expenses and outside tutoring to compensate for online learning. My father has just had another heart surgery this summer and is healing and unable to work. My mother has been unemployed this year because of Covid. Having a job helps me to relieve some of the financial burden, however it makes a small dent.

The Final Push Scholarship
My greatest inspiration in my life is my dad who has driven me not to pick a career based on passions but to pick a career based on your skills that can monetarily support your passions. One of my greatest passions is the preservation and restoration of our environment. When I was in high school, we had to write a paper on an environmental issue. I researched coral reef destruction and growing up in West Palm Beach, Florida as a surfer, this issue struck a chord in me. I researched ways to become involved firsthand and eventually became in contact with Oracabessa Fish Sanctuary in Saint Mary’s, Jamaica. After finding out they needed more divers I completed PADI certification and coral gardener training necessary to be able to properly tend to the reefs. I have been working with them every summer since 2016 and am currently composing a plan showing the potential revenue to increase the government's monetary involvement in the project and devising a plan for the second round of funding. I will be going back this summer to continue Inspecting the progress of the coral reef nurseries, making sure to remove any damaging organisms that may attach themselves to the coral. While my dad's advice is not the typical one of parents guiding their children's career paths, it is something I strongly agree with. To enact firsthand large-scale change, you need both money and resources. I have always been very sociable, strong-minded, and a critical thinker. I have been fortunate to follow my path of getting an excellent education which will allow me to be able to grow my resources and build my connections with others who have resources to start saving this world we all live in.

Snap Finance “Funding the Future” Scholarship
This summer I actually experienced my first taste of financial freedom by accepting a summer internship that compensated me so that I did not have to ask my parents for any money for my personal spending money when I return to college. I saved everything I made this summer so that I have enough money to pay for any extra items or events I want to this year, while at school. True financial freedom is the feeling of being without financial stress. With financial freedom, you have the independence to live stress-free. If an issue comes up, you don’t even bat an eye because you are secure in your finances to pay for the fix. Nothing impacts your finances. From a young age, individuals in the developed world are instructed to get an education and then a job. After landing a solid job, the recommendation is to save a small percentage of each paycheck for 40+ years until retirement.
The underlying assumption is that we should all follow the same linear path from childhood until death, spending the majority of each day at work, trying to climb the ladder, to get a raise, to buy a bigger house, to fill it with an abundance of unnecessary possessions that provide very little satisfaction. Only after retiring is there freedom to explore, relax, or spend time with the people we love and cherish.
You might call it the time-money paradox. Most Americans trade the majority of their available time for a paycheck and then spend the majority of each paycheck on depreciating material possessions. As the spending snowballs, many individuals desire a larger paycheck, which requires even longer hours and more responsibilities at work, leaving even less time to enjoy the income or possessions. It’s a vicious cycle that often continues in perpetuity until retirement or death.
I can’t speak for you or anyone else, but this type of lifestyle doesn’t work for me. Instead of material possessions, I would rather have the financial freedom that allows me to change careers, start a business, travel the world, or spend time with loved ones.
Financial freedom is our primary long-term financial goal. We appreciate the flexibility and freedom that accompanies a large pool of savings, and we would rather forego consumption than live dependent on a monthly paycheck. With my Finance degree, I want to work as a Business Consultant advising individuals and companies on how to best set up their long-term financial goals so that they can confidently plan for their financial freedom.

We are completely debt-free, and have accumulated enough assets to purchase a prolonged period of freedom. And at this point, that’s all that we desire.

While I am there, I will also visit my dad’s business partner’s daughters and their friends. Having the experience to not just live with a family but live with girls my age in a foreign country gave me such a clearer picture of the way teens live in Jamaica and how some stories of people there, are very similar to mine. I believe a study abroad experience will help me grow as a person and citizen of the world by providing me with more stories of people from different countries. I think being around other people of the world and noticing similarities and differences, helps us to see others and individuals instead of an overarching category. There is a large danger of a single story. For example, when I was in 4th grade, my only exposure to Africa was reading “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park and learning that Africa has safaris. These two stories created the assumption in my head that Africa was underdeveloped and non-industrialized
everywhere, which looking back is an ignorant thought but a thought nonetheless supported by all the input my 9-year old brain had received. Studying abroad in another country ensures that you experience a bunch of different people with different stories. I would like to study in Barcelona, Spain because it is a country I have limited stories of and I want to continue my service work in the Balearic Islands which are some of the only coral reefs in Europe. I think Barcelona has everything I am looking for in an abroad experience between providing many other young individuals to meet and continuing my service work.

This scholarship would help me with college tuition and expenses. My parents have been able to help with college costs for my twin sister and I for the two previous years, but my father has been unable to work for the past year and has just had heart surgery this summer. My mother has been unemployed because of Covid. My parents will not be able to help me get loans this coming year because they are not credit worthy. I have a full time job this summer and have I part time job for the school year to help with finances.

I recently heard an analogy. A flea has the genetic ability to jump 13 inches. If you put that flea in a sealed jar that is 7.5 inches, the flea will eventually jump just under 7.5 inches. If that flea procreated in that jar, its children would believe that they can only jump just under 7.5 inches as well despite the fact that their potential is double that. I think humans are no different in this respect. We base our self-image and imagined potential on those we see around us and therefore, I believe that society can most effectively empower women by showing strong examples of all kinds of women in the media. I believe quotas for females hired under companies or organizations are an effective way to ensure representation throughout society, not strong representation. Strong representation starts with investing in programs to not only provide but build the education necessary for women to achieve their goals. The president of my sorority, Ashley Buffe, is a member of She Tribe, a women's group with the goal of preparing young women for the workforce and adult responsibilities. It is programs like these that encourage women to expand their knowledge and build upon their skills to become candidates of strong representation in the lives of other women.
