Losing my grandmother felt like losing a part of myself. She wasn’t just my grandmother; she was my best friend, my biggest cheerleader, and the person who always saw the best in me, even when I couldn’t see it myself. Her passing left an emptiness I couldn’t begin to describe, a silence where her laughter and wisdom used to be. She had been the glue that held my family together, and in her absence, I felt like everything was falling apart. But even in my grief, I could hear her voice—her unshakable belief in me, her pride in everything I had accomplished. She may be gone, but the lessons she taught me and the love she gave me keep me going.
We shared a bond that everyone admired. We talked like best friends, confiding in each other and sharing laughs over meals at her favorite restaurants. I always found an excuse to visit her, whether it was to go shopping or just spend time together. My grandmother had a unique way of making me feel special. She loved to brag about me to her friends, constantly lifting me up and letting me know how proud she was. Her support extended beyond words; she was present at every event that celebrated my accomplishments, and her belief in me never wavered.
My grandmother’s life was a testament to resilience. She faced countless challenges, yet remained strong, resourceful, and dedicated to her family. Despite her limited formal education, she ensured that her children had the opportunities she never did. She was the embodiment of strength and perseverance, and I often looked to her as the role model I wanted to emulate. I admired her wisdom, her ability to find joy in the little things, and her determination to provide a better life for her family.
When she passed away, it was a week after I had been accepted into graduate school and just a week before my classes were set to begin. I was devastated and overwhelmed with grief. I felt like I had lost the one person who had always been there to encourage me, guide me, and share in my triumphs. For a time, I seriously considered dropping out of school. The thought of moving forward without her felt impossible, and the weight of that grief made everything seem insurmountable.
But even in my darkest moments, I knew what she would want for me. My grandmother was always my biggest cheerleader, and she believed in the power of perseverance. She had spent her life fighting to provide for her family, and I knew that giving up on my dreams would go against everything she stood for. I could hear her voice in my heart, telling me to keep going and to make her proud.
Staying in graduate school became my way of honoring her legacy. She had worked so hard to ensure her children had a better life, and now, I had the opportunity to build a better future for myself and my own family. Every day, I draw strength from the example she set. She taught me that resilience isn’t about avoiding hardship; it’s about continuing forward despite it. And that’s what I’ve committed myself to doing.
Although my grandmother isn’t here to see me finish my degree, I know she’s with me in spirit. Every accomplishment, every hurdle I overcome, is done with her memory in mind. She uplifted me in life, and now, I carry her love and strength with me in everything I do. Her legacy of resilience and love will forever guide me.
Live Music Lover Scholarship
My first memory of live music isn't what most people would expect. It wasn’t in a grand arena or with famous artists on stage. It was a small, intimate piano recital when I was just five years old. I still remember my tiny fingers nervously pressing the piano keys as I prepared to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. My piano teacher, sensing my fear, stood directly in front of me to offer comfort and encouragement. I was so afraid of the crowd—though small—that I could barely look up. Yet somehow, her presence helped me find my voice that day, and I managed to sing through the trembling in my chest.
That first concert, if you can call it that, was a defining moment for me. While it was terrifying, it also planted the seeds of my love for live music. Over time, my fear of performing in front of people faded, replaced by a sense of excitement and joy. Now, I can perform in front of large crowds and enjoy every moment of it. The music, the connection with the audience, and the energy shared between the performers and the crowd—it’s become a significant part of who I am.
Fast forward to one of the most unforgettable nights of my life: the Beyoncé Renaissance tour. Growing up, Beyoncé was more than just a singer to me—she was an inspiration, someone who gave voice to dreams I didn’t even know I had yet. I would watch her performances on TV, dreaming of one day experiencing her magic in person. But coming from a family with limited financial means, going to a concert like that felt out of reach. As much as I longed to see her live, there were always more pressing concerns at home, and tickets to a concert were a luxury we couldn’t afford.
That’s why finally seeing Beyoncé live during the Renaissance tour felt like a dream come true. I had spent years imagining what it would be like, and the reality exceeded every expectation. The stadium was electric, buzzing with excitement. When she began performing her classic hits—the ones I grew up singing along to in my room—I was transported back to those childhood days when her voice helped me find my own. The lights, the choreography, her powerful vocals—it was everything I had dreamed of and more. The experience wasn’t just about the music; it was about finally realizing a long-held dream that had seemed unattainable for so long.
In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the music that had carried me through difficult times and the artists who had inspired me along the way. But also, gratitude for the opportunity to be there, in that space, experiencing something I had once only dreamed about. The concert was more than just an event; it was a culmination of years of longing, resilience, and passion for live music.
Live music has always been a way for me to connect, not just with others but with myself. Whether I’m performing or listening, there’s something magical about the way it brings people together and stirs emotions that words alone can’t capture. From that scared five-year-old at the piano to the elated concertgoer at the Beyoncé show, my love for live music has been a journey of growth, discovery, and pure joy.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
WinnerFrom a young age, I’ve been captivated by the power of education to transform lives. This fascination began with my own experiences as a student and grew into a profound commitment to the field of education and instructional design. My choice to pursue a Master’s in Instructional Design and Learning Technology is driven by a deep-seated belief that innovative, well-crafted educational experiences can empower learners and effect positive change.
My journey into the field of education was influenced by my personal experiences with both effective and ineffective teaching methods. As a high school student, I struggled with math until I encountered a calculus teacher who made complex concepts accessible and engaging. Her ability to connect with students and make learning enjoyable inspired me. This experience ignited my passion for teaching and led me to tutor peers in calculus, which further solidified my love for education. I saw firsthand how personalized support and enthusiasm could help others overcome academic challenges and build confidence.
Choosing to specialize in instructional design was a natural extension of this passion. I am particularly drawn to the potential of technology to improve learning experiences. In my studies, I focus on how to integrate innovative tools and methods to create engaging, effective educational content. The goal is to design learning experiences that are not only informative but also interactive and tailored to the needs of diverse learners. By utilizing technology, I aim to make education more accessible and engaging for students of all backgrounds.
My desire to create an impact in this field is driven by a commitment to equity and quality in education. I believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn in a way that suits their individual needs and strengths. By developing and implementing instructional strategies that are inclusive and adaptive, I hope to address disparities in educational outcomes and support all learners in reaching their full potential.
Personal goals play a significant role in shaping my professional passion. My experiences with mental health challenges have taught me the importance of resilience and self-care, which I strive to incorporate into my work. Understanding the pressures students face, both academically and personally, motivates me to design learning environments that are supportive and nurturing. Additionally, my mother’s example of perseverance and dedication has inspired me to work hard and pursue excellence in everything I do. Her journey from overcoming personal obstacles to achieving professional success is a testament to the transformative power of education, which I seek to replicate in my own career.
In summary, my choice to pursue a career in instructional design and learning technology stems from a deep passion for education and a desire to make a meaningful impact. By leveraging technology and innovative teaching methods, I aim to create engaging and effective learning experiences that empower students and promote educational equity. Personal experiences and goals further fueled my commitment to this field, and I'm dedicated to using my skills and knowledge to foster positive change and support the success of all learners.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
My journey through school has been anything but a straight path. Since high school, I have struggled with my mental health, facing challenges that sometimes felt insurmountable. At one point, my struggles were so intense that I was hospitalized. This experience taught me a profound lesson about the critical importance of mental health and how easily it can be impacted by additional stressors, such as the demands of school.
Mental health is deeply intertwined with academic performance and personal life. During my lowest points, focusing on assignments or finding the motivation to attend classes felt like climbing a mountain. The stress of school compounded my anxiety, creating a vicious cycle that was hard to break. It became clear to me that without a solid foundation of mental well-being, succeeding academically was an uphill battle.
Over time, I learned that the key to navigating this complex relationship lies in reframing my mindset and prioritizing self-care. I began to understand that it’s okay not to be okay all the time and that taking a break is not a sign of weakness but a necessary step towards recovery and resilience. This realization marked a turning point in my life. I started to practice self-compassion and accept that mental health, like physical health, requires attention and care.
I developed several strategies to manage my mental health while balancing my academic responsibilities. First, I made a conscious effort to reframe my thoughts. Instead of viewing challenges as obstacles, I began to see them as opportunities for growth. This shift in perspective helped reduce my anxiety and foster a sense of empowerment rather than helplessness.
In addition, I learned to prioritize self-care, something I had previously neglected. I carved out time for leisure activities that bring me joy and relaxation, such as reading, spending time in nature, or simply taking a moment to breathe and be present. These breaks became essential to my routine, providing a mental reset and preventing burnout.
Reaching out for help was another crucial step in my journey. I realized I didn't have to navigate my struggles alone. Whether it was confiding in a friend, speaking to a counselor, or joining a support group, I found strength in vulnerability and community. These connections provided a safe space to express my feelings and receive support, which was invaluable during tough times.
Today, as I pursue my graduate studies, I continue to make my mental health a priority. I know that academic success and personal well-being are not mutually exclusive but are deeply interconnected. By taking proactive steps to maintain my mental health, I am better equipped to handle the rigors of school and excel in my studies.
The scholarship funds would allow me to continue my education without the added financial stress that often exacerbates mental health issues. By alleviating this burden, I could focus more on my studies and maintain the self-care practices that have been so vital to my journey. Ultimately, my goal is to use my experiences to help others facing similar challenges, advocating for mental health awareness and support within academic environments.
In reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and the resilience I have developed. I know there will always be ups and downs, but I now have the tools and strategies to navigate them with grace and strength. With this scholarship, I can continue to prioritize my mental health while pursuing my academic and professional goals, embodying the belief that mental well-being is the foundation of true success.
Leela Shah "Be Bold" Womens' Empowerment Scholarship
Growing up, I always admired my mother’s strength and determination. A navy veteran and retired nurse, she taught me the values of perseverance, hard work, and the importance of education. But it wasn’t just her career accomplishments that shaped me; it was her journey there and the sacrifices she made along the way.
My mother’s path was far from easy. Raised in a household where resources were scarce, her mother worked three jobs to make ends meet and provide opportunities for her children. Despite having all the odds stacked against her, my mother became the first in our family to earn an undergraduate degree. She didn’t just accept the gift of education; she seized it with both hands, determined to carve out a better future for herself and, one day, for her children.
Watching her juggle the demands of a military career, nursing school, and eventually raising a family, I saw firsthand what it means to be dedicated and resilient. Even when times were tough, my mother ensured we had the chance to explore every avenue to succeed. Whether it was enrolling us in extracurricular activities, helping with homework late into the night, or simply being a pillar of strength and encouragement, she never stopped believing in the power of possibilities.
Her commitment to education, particularly her own, instilled a similar drive in me. As I pursue my master’s degree in education, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in graduate school, I find myself often reflecting on her sacrifices and how they’ve paved the way for my success. My mother’s story is a constant reminder that success is not just about the opportunities we are given but how we seize those opportunities with hard work and gratitude.
One of the most significant lessons my mother taught me is that education is not just a personal journey but a gift that can transform future generations. She used her education to build a better life for us, and I want to do the same for my future children. By becoming an educator, I hope to inspire and equip the next generation with the tools they need to succeed, just as my mother did for me.
If awarded this scholarship, I plan to use the funds to continue my education, focusing on integrating technology into learning to make education more accessible and engaging for all students. I aim to develop curricula that recognize each student's unique needs and potential, much like my mother recognized mine. This scholarship will enable me to delve deeper into my studies and acquire the skills necessary to impact education positively. It’s not just an investment in my future but in the countless students I will have the opportunity to teach and inspire.
My mother’s unwavering belief in education and hard work has been the foundation of my journey. She showed me that with determination and dedication, no obstacle is insurmountable. I want to carry forward her legacy, creating opportunities for others and ensuring that every student I encounter understands their potential, no matter their circumstances.
As I look to the future, I am filled with hope and determination. I know that with the right support, like this scholarship, I can continue to build on the foundation my mother laid, creating a ripple effect of opportunity and success for future generations. Just as my mother made sacrifices for me, I want to be that guiding force for my students and my own children, ensuring they too have every opportunity to explore, grow, and succeed.
