Outside the Binary: Chineye Emeghara’s STEAM Scholarship
I am planning to study communication design with a focus on UI design. My interest lies in creating visually beautiful and user-friendly interfaces that improve the overall user experience. I want to learn more about the complexities of human-computer interaction and how design can successfully convey information across a range of platforms through this project. My ultimate objective is to use these abilities to produce better user-friendly designs for a wide range of products, including magazines, pill bottles, websites, applications, and more. The value of a concise and straightforward design must be emphasized in a culture that is becoming more and more reliant on technology. In addition to decreasing user interest, unclear or complicated interfaces can lead to serious misinterpretations of important information.
I became interested in this path because of the old Target pharmacy bottles, ClearRx, created by a design student named Deborah Adler as a thesis project. Her goal was to create a design that would clarify certain difficult aspects that are very common to many prescription bottles used at pharmacies. After doing further research on the reason for creating the ClearRx bottle it amplified my reasoning for going into communication design. I was already interested in a creative career, and I enjoyed creating art and digital media, so when provided with a possible career of creating new designs while also helping people grasp new concepts easily.
I believe that after doing more research on possible career opportunities granted by this field as well as how I would personally feel working in this career 20 to 40 years later I felt that it was the best option for me. This field is said to be continuously growing and evolving and it would be a great way for me to express myself through different mediums and is a fairly versatile field that can be used in many different aspects of life. Visual communication designers are also in high demand because of the skills wanted in the working market. I can choose to work in advertising, marketing, etc with the skills learned within this major. Furthermore, as I work to refine my UI/UX design skills, I see it being incorporated into fields that closely match my interests. By using these talents to create educational platforms, for example, learning might be made more interesting and accessible for students from all backgrounds, revolutionizing the way knowledge is shared. Furthermore, the implementation of UI/UX concepts in healthcare technology may result in the creation of user-friendly programs that enhance patient care and expedite medical procedures.
This skill set in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design can positively affect communities not just in my local community but also globally. By skillfully applying visual communication strategies, important information may be communicated to a variety of audiences. The symbiotic link between UX and UI design makes it easier to create user interfaces that are engaging and intuitive, which improves user engagement and experience overall. This competence is essential to the creation of visually appealing items as well as to their overall growth and success. To put it simply, my UI/UX design is a tool for global outreach and community empowerment, but it also gives me a platform to channel my interests into worthwhile projects that align with the needs and goals of society. I hope to pursue my personal interests and hobbies while making a significant contribution to the improvement of communities throughout the world through this field's ongoing growth and innovation.

Mental Health Importance Scholarship
During my late middle school and early high school years, anxiety had a significant impact on my life. It discouraged me from trying new things or going outside of my comfort zone. I recall being an open and sociable person both in and out of school, always wanting to inspire people to explore new experiences. However, once I entered eighth grade, everything drastically changed. The inspiration that had once fueled my passion for electives and athletics began to fade away and was replaced with a paralyzing sensation of dread. I began to avoid any activities that required me to stay after school, preferring to return to the safety of my house, away from the judgmental eyes of large crowds. I think it is so important to realize the effects our mental health has on us as a person, and how not everyone is alone when combating their struggles with mental health.
I maintain my mental health wellness by working on myself away from prying eyes, and learning that I don't have to burden everything I do on my own. I realized that talking to others about my experience and how I feel improves the way I feel around others. My sophomore year of high school was the turning point in my life. I became determined not to let my anxiety control me any longer. My goal was to participate in large group activities, purposefully pushing myself into crowded settings, and my anxiety attacks gradually decreased in frequency. I met new friends, created connections, and began to rediscover the confidence that had once defined me.
A path of healing mentally isn't a straight journey and often has hills, bumps, and mountains to overcome when trying new things. A tragic event delayed my process of self-discovery, however, it didn't break me. I made deliberate attempts to overcome my hardships, confronting the residual fear that had reappeared that day. I've now reached a time in my life where panic attacks are not frequent, and I'm pleased with my milestone of only three attacks during my junior year. As I approach the end of my senior year, I am filled with optimism and resolve to continue my journey of self-discovery. My objective for the coming year is to have a successful and consistent year as I prepare for the next chapter of my life in college. I believe mental health is important throughout all years of your life, it is something that can differentiate

I began to avoid any activities that required me to stay after school, preferring to return to the safety of my house, away from the judgmental eyes of large crowds.
Strangely, the emergence of the COVID-19 epidemic provided a brief distraction from my severe anxiousness. It allowed me to work on myself away from the prying eyes of others, and I gradually restored my sense of self. I was entering my freshman year of high school with an acute fear of large groups and open areas. I always sat in the front of the class, not to be closer to the board, but to prevent eye contact and engagement with my classmates. It appeared to be an overwhelming issue, and I expected to be troubled by anxiety attacks indefinitely, especially as school shootings became a major concern in the headlines.
But then came a day that felt like a horrible flashback to my worst anxious days. It was the day that our school was placed on lockdown due to a security threat. When I eventually took shelter in a classroom, adrenaline shot through my veins, creating a serious panic attack. I felt myself hyperventilating, tears flowing down my face, and suffocating beneath the weight of my anxiety. A friend seated next to me offered a helping hand, guiding me through breathing exercises and providing therapeutic, rhythmic squeezes to settle my worries. The encounter left a profound wound in my mind, a lasting memory.
This tragic event delayed the process of self-discovery, however, it didn't break me. I made deliberate attempts to overcome my hardships, confronting the residual fear that had reappeared that day. In the face of adversity, I've learned that resilience and personal growth are not only possible but achievable. My experiences with anxiety have shaped me into a stronger and more determined individual, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. I eagerly look forward to the opportunities and experiences that await me in college, where I can continue this journey of self-discovery and self-growth.
