I can’t afford to go to the doctor right now”, A phrase I would always hear growing up. From a young age, I knew we weren’t wealthy. But something that stuck with me was when my dad, who was immunocompromised, couldn’t afford to do something as basic as getting a check-up for his general health. Yet, after hearing this, my first thought wasn’t that I needed to become rich where affordability wasn’t an issue, but rather, what could I do to help those who are struggling like us? That’s where my interest in the healthcare field began. Throughout my high school career, I’ve tailored my classes towards health since that's where my interest resides. I even applied for my school's Clinical Rotation program and got accepted! In that program, I was given the opportunity to go to various hospitals and clinics in my community and volunteer for two hours of my day for both my junior and senior years of high school. Through that class, I got to experience the raw image of the healthcare field with all its imperfections: racial inequality & racial disparity. Not only were they directed towards patients at the hospital but even towards myself as a clinical student. Ironically, those experiences solidified my interest in the medical field as there was a divide in a field I loved and wanted to fix it. Promoting diversity while ending racial inequality in the medical field became my personal goal. This goal played into my choices of colleges, as when researching, I came across an individual named Whitter C. Atkinson, who stood out to me. Despite his circumstances, alongside the hardships endured by African Americans in his time, he still persevered in creating his own hospital, Clement Atkinson Memorial Hospital to serve the needs of the African-American community who faced racial discrimination. In a world where racial discrimination continues to be at an all-time high, I genuinely connected with Mr. Atkinson’s aspirations in serving our community which had been disadvantaged from the start. I hope to pursue coursework that will help me both challenge and expand my current mindset. Classes that examine the psychological experiences of African Americans will better educate me on topics such as structural racism. I hope to be the Whitter C. Atkinson of the 20th century, being the bridge between healthcare, affordability, and racial awareness. That is not a dream of mine to pursue, but a goal I must accomplish.

In a world where words hold the power to ignite flames of inspiration and transformation, there is one book that stands tall as a beacon of self-discovery and empowerment: "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. In the heart of Andalusia, Spain, a young shepherd named Santiago embarks on a quest to find a hidden treasure buried in the Egyptian pyramids. Throughout his journey, Santiago encounters a wise alchemist who imparts profound wisdom that resonates with readers of all ages. "The Alchemist" weaves a mesmerizing tale of courage and the pursuit of one's dreams, leaving readers inspired and empowered. At its core, the book teaches us to believe in the power of our dreams and the strength that lies within us. It invites us to look beyond the mundane distractions of daily life and delve into the essence of our being. As I read this book, I felt a deep connection with Santiago, as if his quest mirrored my own aspirations and dreams. Coelho's eloquence breathes life into the characters, making them relatable and etching a lasting impression on the heart. Moreover, "The Alchemist" reveals the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges. Santiago encounters setbacks and obstacles, yet he persists, driven by the unwavering belief in his purpose. If I could have everyone in the world read this book, I believe it would ignite a universal flame of self-belief and empowerment. In a world that often tries to dim our spirits, "The Alchemist" becomes a guiding light, reminding us that we are all part of a greater universe, connected by a common desire for purpose and fulfillment. As I reflect on the impact that "The Alchemist" has had on my life, I can't help but marvel at the profound connection I've formed with its pages. From the moment I delved into Santiago's journey, I felt an immediate resonance with his dreams and desires. The book's words seemed to flow like a river of wisdom, washing over me and igniting a fire within my soul. I remember the countless hours I've spent lost in its narrative, each word a stepping stone guiding me through the labyrinth of self-discovery. The book's lessons felt like whispered secrets shared between a mentor and a student, gently urging me to embrace my own path, just as Santiago did. "The Alchemist" became more than just a book on my shelf; it transformed into a trusted companion, offering solace during moments of doubt and a beacon of light during times of uncertainty. Coelho's writing style, almost poetic in nature, painted vivid scenes in my mind's eye, allowing me to traverse the deserts and cross the oases alongside Santiago. With every turn of the page, I felt a sense of connection not only to the characters but also to the larger universe that we are all a part of. The book's message of perseverance, resilience, and the pursuit of one's personal legend became the mantra that echoed in my heart, encouraging me to stay the course no matter the challenges that lay ahead. "The Alchemist" is a timeless treasure that holds the power to transform lives, infusing them with hope, inspiration, and a profound sense of self-worth. As you embark on your own journey through its enchanting pages, may you discover the hidden treasures within yourself and find the courage to pursue the dreams that make your heart dance with joy. Embrace your destiny, for you are the alchemist of your own life, and within you lies the power to turn your dreams into reality.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a somber glow on the twilight of my junior year in high school. In the realm of soccer, where triumphs and defeats intertwined, I found myself at a crossroads, facing the worst time of my soccer career. The passion that once ignited my soul had dimmed, as I grappled with a profound sense of stagnation. It felt as if I was trapped in a quagmire, neither progressing nor regressing, and the frustration gnawed at my very core. With a heavy heart, I made the heart-wrenching decision to part ways with the sport I had once cherished—the beautiful game of soccer. Quitting was a gut-wrenching choice, like severing a connection to a vital part of my identity. Soccer was more than just a game; it was a kaleidoscope of emotions, a medium through which I could express myself and connect with others. Yet, I couldn't ignore the shadow of inadequacy that loomed over me. While others soared to new heights, I was anchored in a state of limbo, and the relentless feeling of not being good enough was an anchor pulling me down. Days turned into months, and the emptiness persisted, casting a pall over my life. I searched for solace in various pursuits, but nothing could replace the exhilaration of being on the field, chasing a ball with relentless passion. It was during this soul-searching phase that I stumbled upon a revelation that would breathe life back into my soccer journey. The summer after my senior year brought with it an unexpected awakening—a glimmer of hope amid the darkness. Watching my 12-year-old sister revel in the sheer joy of soccer ignited something within me. The dormant flame of my passion flickered to life, and I found myself drawn back to the sport that had once defined me. In a humble setting, just my sister and me, I returned to the field, embracing the familiar grass beneath my feet and the scent of competition in the air. As the ball danced under my command, memories of triumphant victories and bitter defeats flooded my senses. In that moment, clarity washed over me like a wave—I had never stopped loving soccer. My decision to quit had been an act of desperation, a futile attempt to escape the stagnant waters that engulfed me. Rediscovering soccer breathed new life into my spirit, and I vowed never to abandon it again. I had come to understand that in life, we all encounter moments of standstill, where progress seems elusive and doubts creep in like shadows. But it is precisely in those moments that we must summon our strength and forge ahead. Soccer taught me the true essence of resilience—the ability to rise from the ashes of disappointment and embrace the journey with unwavering determination. As I stand on the threshold of my future, the allure of college beckons, and with it, dreams of taking my soccer journey to greater heights. This scholarship represents more than just financial aid—it signifies an opportunity to continue honing my skills, to compete at the collegiate level, and to immerse myself in the world of sports science. I am eager to explore the science behind athletic performance, to understand the intricacies of injury prevention, and to delve into the psychology that underpins success in sports. Armed with this knowledge, I aspire to give back to the soccer community, to mentor aspiring athletes, and to make a positive impact in the world of soccer.

In the grand tapestry of existence, if I were granted the power to alter one negative facet of my surroundings, I would embark on an extraordinary journey of perception transformation. Picture a world where adversities are not adversaries, but partners in a mesmerizing dance, an intricate symphony of growth and potential. Life, like a delicate caterpillar's metamorphosis into a resplendent butterfly, is a breathtaking odyssey of change. We often find ourselves cocooned in the struggles that test our resolve. Instead of resisting this cocoon, what if we were to view it as a necessary vessel for our growth? Adversity becomes the chisel that sculpts our character, forging us into individuals capable of achieving feats beyond our imagination. Rather than fearing adversity's arrival, envision it as a catalyst for our evolution. As a diamond emerges from coal under intense pressure, so do we unveil our brilliance under the weight of challenges. Our collective history is replete with exemplars who turned adversity into opportunity. Through the crucible of their struggles, they carved masterpieces that have shaped the course of humanity. Let's contemplate an ordinary stone. Its unremarkable appearance belies its latent potential. Subjected to heat and pressure, it transforms into a precious gem. Similarly, when we embrace the heat of adversity and the pressure of trials, we metamorphose into something extraordinary. The symphony of our growth is composed of both harmonious melodies and dissonant chords, creating a unique and captivating narrative. Throughout history, ordinary individuals, like rough stones, have been thrust into the crucible of adversity. Think of scientists, artists, and visionaries who overcame seemingly insurmountable challenges to change the world. Their struggles were not impediments, but rather, the impetus for their greatness. Adversity refined their brilliance, molding them into forces of positive change. As we navigate the bustling streets of our cities, we encounter people engaged in their daily routines. Behind these ordinary scenes lie extraordinary stories of resilience. Each individual, like a caterpillar within its cocoon, faces their own challenges. By viewing our collective journey through the lens of metamorphosis, we acknowledge the beauty inherent in every step, even those that seem to lead us astray. When we accept adversity as a dance partner, our perspective shifts. We cease to see obstacles as barriers, and instead, they become stepping stones. In this choreography of life, every stumble is an opportunity to rise, every misstep a chance to learn. Just as a dancer's grace emerges from mastering complex movements, so does our brilliance shine forth when we master the intricate steps of adversity. As you contemplate the change you would make, consider this unique perspective. Let us not seek to erase challenges from our lives, but to harness their power. By dancing with adversity, we invite growth, awaken our latent potential, and reshape the world in unprecedented ways. In conclusion, the negative aspect of my environment that I would transform is our perception of adversity. This metamorphic journey teaches us that challenges are not impediments but opportunities. The dance of life is a symphony, composed of both triumphant and challenging notes. By embracing these challenges, we unlock the latent brilliance within us and, in unity, become architects of positive change. Just as the caterpillar's transformation mesmerizes us, so can our dance with adversity captivate the world, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of time. As we step forward into the future, let us remember that the dance continues, and with each step, we embrace the transformative power of adversity, emerging as the butterflies of our own narratives.

Throughout my freshman year of high school, while my friends exuberantly declared their future ambitions, I found myself grappling with uncertainty. "What do I want to be?" The question echoed in my mind, haunting me like a persistent shadow. However, fate had a profound plan in store, and it unfolded during the darkest chapter of our generation—the COVID-19 pandemic—a time that froze the world in its tracks. As the pandemic swept through my hometown of Plano, Texas, and the world, leaving devastation in its wake, fear gripped my heart, not for myself, but for my immunocompromised father. The thought of him contracting the virus filled me with dread, but sadly, my worst fear materialized. His condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to prolonged hospital stays, turning those sterile walls into a temporary home for our family. In those trying moments, I witnessed a different world—the world of healthcare professionals. While the rest of the world seemed to have come to a grinding halt, hospitals and healthcare facilities hummed with a sense of urgency, propelled by the tireless efforts of medical professionals. Their selflessness and expertise in the face of unprecedented challenges left an indelible mark on my soul. Amidst this chaos, pharmacists stood tall as pillars of knowledge, guiding patients and their families through the intricate world of pharmaceuticals with unwavering dedication. Weeks turned into a blur, but eventually, my father emerged victorious in his battle against the virus, emerging as a beacon of hope amidst the turmoil. However, this harrowing experience did more than celebrate his survival; it awakened something deep within me—an untapped desire to make a difference in people's lives through healthcare. In that hospital room, I realized that my true calling lay in becoming a medical professional—a pharmacist. The decision to pursue this path was not made lightly, for I knew it would demand unwavering dedication and perseverance. With newfound clarity, I delved into the world of pharmacy, immersing myself in research and exploring the myriad of opportunities it offered. My journey toward becoming a pharmacist will be a rollercoaster ride—filled with moments of triumph and challenges that test my resilience. As I embarked on my academic pursuits, I encountered subjects that seemed insurmountable at first, such as memorizing the top 200 drugs; both generic and brand names. However, I discovered strength within myself that I never knew existed. Armed with determination, I sought out mentors who not only helped me navigate the complex field of pharmacy but also provided valuable life lessons that transcended textbooks. During my junior and senior years of high school, I was accepted into a program called "Clinical Rotation" which allowed me to shadow various medical professionals in a variety of fields every day for 2 years. This program has allowed me to amass 360+ in-person clinical hours behind my belt, while also solidifying my interest in pharmacy. I aspire to create an environment that fosters compassion and kindness, providing solace to those seeking healing and hope. My path to discovering my passion was laden with challenges and uncertainties, but it led me to an inspiring realization. The COVID-19 pandemic presented me with an unexpected opportunity to witness the heroic efforts of healthcare professionals, who selflessly served their communities. This experience ignited a fire within me, driving me to pursue a career in pharmacy with determination. The journey has strengthened my character, enhanced my resilience, and instilled a profound sense of purpose in my heart. As I embark on this path, I carry the lessons learned during those dark days and look forward to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Stepping into the world of bioinformatics, I found myself at the intersection of two profound passions: healthcare and data informatics. My journey in this field has been a pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and a fervent desire to bring positive change to the healthcare industry. As I prepare to embark on my college journey, I am determined to be a trailblazer in bioinformatics, leading the way towards a better future for this evolving discipline. My fascination with healthcare began with the compassionate care my family received during challenging times. Simultaneously, my intrigue with data and informatics grew, sparked by the mesmerizing world of numbers and patterns. Little did I know that these two seemingly disparate interests would converge into an extraordinary pathway: bioinformatics. In high school, I seized every opportunity to immerse myself in data science, statistics, and informatics. My passion flourished with each classroom session, coding assignment, and research project. In the heart of Rhode Island, where the skyline is punctuated by towering buildings and the air is filled with the cacophony of urban life, I was born. The inner city of Rhode Island, a place where dreams often get lost in the labyrinth of hardship, became my cradle and my crucible. The city's rhythm was my childhood symphony, its grit my canvas. Yet, beneath its vibrant facade, the city bore scars of inequality. The underfunded schools, the high dropout rates, the struggle to make ends meet - these were the specters that haunted our neighborhood. Growing up, the city's heartbeat was my lullaby, its grit my playground. The streets were a classroom of their own, teaching lessons of resilience, survival, and the power of community. Yet, the city's underbelly also revealed a stark reality. The underfunded schools, the high dropout rates, the struggle to make ends meet - these were the shadows that loomed over our neighborhood. My parents, immigrants from the Virgin Islands, worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Their hands, weathered from years of labor, held dreams they could not fully realize for themselves but wished fervently for their children. Despite their efforts, the financial constraints were a constant reminder of the limitations we faced. Yet, amidst these challenges, I found my calling. A local clinic, a beacon of hope in our community, became my sanctuary. The doctors and nurses there, working with limited resources, were the unsung heroes of our neighborhood. Their dedication to healing, their compassion, their resilience - it was here that my dream of entering the medical field was born. The journey was arduous. I balanced school, part-time jobs, and volunteering at the clinic. There were nights when the burden of my dreams and reality seemed unbearable. But each time, I found solace in my parents' unwavering faith, in the encouraging words of my teachers, and in the grateful smiles of the patients at the clinic. My GPA, a modest 3.6, may not reflect the brilliance of a valedictorian, but it is a testament to my perseverance. It is a testament to countless nights spent studying under dim lights, to the sacrifices made to balance work and education, to the relentless pursuit of a dream that seemed almost unattainable. Growing up in the inner city of Rhode Island, I learned that life is not about the challenges we face, but how we rise above them. I learned that dreams are not defined by our circumstances, but by our courage to pursue them. And I learned that the journey to becoming a doctor is not just about healing bodies, but also about healing communities. So throughout my experiences in life, I obtained the ability to answer the lifelong question that haunted those who wanted to pursue medicine; "Why do you want to be a doctor?". It transcends merely helping people, but having the power to foster a community from almost nothing, to nurture those from zero to 100, being an impact in someone's life you never thought you'd meet. Medicine had opened my eyes to something far more than just "helping people".

Just like Mohamed, I aspire to use my strong voice and compassion to be an upstander and promote diversity in the medical field and beyond. From a young age, I have idolized the healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to care for others and make a positive impact on their lives. During my junior year, I was granted a life-changing opportunity to participate in the "Clinical Rotation" program. This program allowed me to shadow various medical professionals, giving me invaluable insights into different medical fields. However, it also brought to my attention the glaring lack of diversity within the medical field. As a proud African American student, I recognized the importance of diversity in STEM fields. It is essential to have representation from all communities to address the unique needs and concerns of diverse patient populations. I am determined to be a trailblazer, advocating for increased diversity in the medical field by encouraging and supporting underrepresented students to pursue careers in STEM. In college, I plan to actively promote diversity and inclusivity by participating in organizations that focus on increasing representation in STEM fields. By mentoring and supporting young aspiring students, I aim to show them that they too can achieve greatness and contribute to the world of medicine. Being an upstander goes beyond advocating for diversity; it means fostering a sense of community and empowerment. Growing up as a child of immigrant parents who faced language barriers, I became their advocate, ensuring they received the assistance and support they needed. This experience taught me the power of standing up for what is right and using my voice to make a difference in the lives of others. In school, I took the initiative to start a Black Student Union, creating a safe space for students of color to connect, support each other, and celebrate our heritage. The club quickly grew into one of the largest on campus, fostering a true sense of community that was long overdue. We collaborated with locally-owned black businesses, strengthening our ties and creating a network of support. As I continue my journey, I plan to utilize my voice to speak up against injustice and inequality. I will actively engage in conversations and initiatives that address systemic issues, such as racial disparities in healthcare and educational opportunities. By advocating for change at both a local and national level, I hope to be a catalyst for positive transformation and progress. Mohamed Magdi Taha's legacy serves as a powerful reminder that even seemingly small acts can have a transformative impact. Just as he recognized the significance of building a community, I will strive to foster unity, empathy, and understanding within my own community and beyond. In conclusion, I am committed to being an upstander and using my voice to promote diversity in the medical field and advocate for positive change. Through mentoring, advocating, and fostering a sense of community, I aim to inspire and uplift others to pursue their dreams and make a difference in their own communities. As I embark on my journey to become a family medicine physician, I will carry Mohamed's spirit with me, and I am determined to leave a lasting legacy of compassion, empowerment, and positive change.

As a fresh high school graduate and an African American, I stand at the crossroads of my journey towards becoming a family medicine physician. Along this path, I have grappled with my identity and faced the challenge of hiding my true self from my family due to the fear of judgment. However, I have also discovered my passion for the healthcare field and my unwavering commitment to make quality medical care accessible to all, irrespective of financial constraints. Throughout my high school career, I found myself concealing my true identity as a gay individual from my family. The fear of being judged as "too gay" or "not manly enough" kept me from freely expressing myself. The weight of societal expectations and familial judgment made me keep my true self hidden, except from my younger sister, whom I love dearly and confide in. In the school environment, I felt a bit more at ease, and I could be more authentic with a select group of friends. However, the constant fear of judgment from others lingered, hindering my complete self-expression. Despite these challenges, one aspect of my life remained constant and certain – my interest in the healthcare field. I actively engaged in volunteering at local hospitals, clinics, veterinary places, and nursing homes, which solidified my passion for medicine. The opportunity to be part of my school's "clinical rotation" program was truly transformative. Through this program, I had the privilege of shadowing various medical professionals, even witnessing surgeries in the surgical room. These experiences further ignited my desire to pursue a career in medicine. Obtaining my PCT (Patient Care Technician) and pharmacy technician certifications further cemented my commitment to the healthcare field. Yet, ironically, my parents did not share my enthusiasm for my dream of becoming a doctor. Their concerns about the financial burden of medical education discouraged me. However, this notion of "too expensive" actually fueled my determination to become a physician and make a difference. One of my greatest aspirations is to open my own medical practice that prioritizes accessibility and affordability for all individuals. I believe that quality healthcare should not be a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Instead, it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial status. I envision a practice where individuals, especially those less fortunate, can receive the care they need without the fear of financial ruin. I am determined to break the barriers that prevent people from seeking medical attention due to financial constraints. The phrase "too expensive" became a catalyst for my passion to serve and make a positive impact in the lives of those who struggle to afford healthcare. My dream is to establish a medical practice that provides top-notch care to everyone, fostering a sense of inclusivity and compassion in the healthcare system. My journey to becoming a family medicine physician has been a rollercoaster of self-discovery and self-acceptance. As an African American with dreams of making quality healthcare accessible to all, I have faced the challenges of hiding my identity to avoid judgment. Becoming a family medicine physician is not only a personal goal but also a means of making a lasting impact in my community and beyond. Through my dedication and passion, I hope to inspire change in the healthcare system, ensuring that quality care is accessible to all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status. I believe that embracing my identity and staying true to my aspirations will set me apart as a scholarship recipient, enabling me to become a compassionate and empathetic doctor who makes a positive difference in the lives of many.

High school, a realm consumed by the relentless pursuit of grades and college admissions. Amidst the chaos, the concept of prioritizing oneself often fades into oblivion. Trapped in this whirlwind, I unwittingly succumbed to the same fate. Little did I know that life had a profound lesson in store, one that would forever alter my perception of personal wellness. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to my doorstep. Within my low-income household, the virus struck hardest at my immunocompromised father. Suddenly, I found myself thrust into the role of caretaker, as my mother tirelessly labored to cover mounting medical expenses. I shouldered the responsibility of nurturing my younger sister, ensuring she had nourishment, assisting with her homework, and managing my own education—all while teetering on the edge of exhaustion. The weight of it all steadily wore me down, but I pressed on, suppressing my emotions with the belief that "something bigger" was happening. Despite managing to pass all my classes during my sophomore year, the consequences of bottling up my emotions manifested in my junior year upon our return to in-person schooling. My mental capacity dwindled, and the overwhelming burden I carried began to take its toll. Struggling to find balance, I reached a breaking point. Isolated in solitude, I experienced physical and mental breakdowns, grappling with thoughts of self-harm. I had neglected my mental health, falsely believing that my responsibilities superseded my own well-being. It was during this darkest period that my family noticed the cracks in my facade and extended their support. Their intervention became the turning point in my journey. Slowly but surely, I embarked on a path of healing, recognizing the importance of prioritizing my mental well-being. However, as I began this process, my grades suffered, perpetuating the cycle of stress and anxiety. Yet, a pivotal conversation with my counselor forever transformed my perspective. She imparted wisdom that resonated deep within my soul: "You must find joy in life, even if it means sacrificing a good grade. Being alive with a lower grade is far superior to achieving success academically but losing yourself in the process." Her words acted as a catalyst, illuminating the true meaning behind my struggles. They emboldened me to acknowledge the significance of personal well-being, reassuring me that grades alone do not define my worth. Armed with this newfound understanding, I enter college with a resolute commitment to prioritize my personal wellness. I now comprehend the profound truth that life's value extends far beyond academic achievements. Embracing my counselor's message, I no longer view it as an excuse for academic negligence but rather as permission to nurture my mental health. I recognize that my existence holds immeasurable worth, and it is essential to cherish and safeguard it. In this pursuit of personal wellness, I have come to understand that genuine success is intertwined with holistic well-being. By nurturing my mental, emotional, and physical health, I equip myself with the resilience and clarity needed to navigate the challenges of college life. It is through embracing life that I unlock the keys to my true potential. In conclusion, I embark on my college journey with a profound understanding that personal wellness is the cornerstone of success. I recognize that life's worth transcends the confines of grades and achievements. By embracing joy, nurturing my mental health, and cherishing the precious gift of life, I will not only flourish as a student but also cultivate a future built upon resilience, authenticity, and fulfillment. In reflecting upon my experiences as a leader in high school, I have come to realize that true leadership goes beyond the titles we hold. It encompasses both visible and behind-the-scenes efforts, as well as the ability to inspire and uplift others. During my time in high school, I had the privilege of assuming various roles, each playing a unique part in shaping my leadership journey. Notably, I initiated the establishment of the first-ever Black Student Union at Plano West, where I collaborated with fellow Black officers to create a safe and empowering space for our peers to express themselves. Together, we diligently connected members with valuable resources for college and life beyond. In addition to this significant undertaking, I actively contributed to the Think Different Tutoring Club, offering free peer-to-peer tutoring sessions and providing students with invaluable learning opportunities. While these roles may not have attracted much attention, they have been instrumental in defining my leadership identity. I firmly believe that leadership extends beyond giving orders; it thrives in both overt and subtle ways. This belief led me to encourage a friend to establish their own clubs, such as The Racial Equity Club and United Through Discussion Club. For clubs like Words to Heart, Asian American Perspective, and Bollywood, where I am merely a member, I passionately support their initiatives as if they were my own. By promoting these organizations, I embrace a hidden leadership role that aims to inspire and empower others. Indeed, these roles may not be immediately eye-catching, and some may even seem imaginary. However, they have contributed significantly to my growth as a leader. High school has offered me the invaluable opportunity to engage with diverse individuals, forge friendships, and gain exposure to a myriad of perspectives. Through this experience, I have developed a profound appreciation for the importance of diversity. Diversity, whether it manifests in racial backgrounds or varying opinions, serves as a catalyst for personal and collective growth. Its power lies in expanding our minds and fostering unity. As I look forward to joining the diverse community wherever the future takes me, I am filled with anticipation. I am committed to immersing myself in the multitude of communities, actively learning from and contributing to their growth. I aspire to be a leader who operates both on the frontlines and behind the scenes, inspiring others and fostering a sense of belonging within our community.

Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to make a difference in the world, but I never quite knew how. As I got older, I realized that my passion lay in the field of medicine. I wanted to become a family medicine physician, someone who could make a difference in the lives of families, and provide them with the care and support they needed to lead healthy and happy lives. However, it wasn't until I took a chance and applied for my school's Clinical Rotation Program that I truly discovered my passion for medicine. This program allowed me to experience around 350 hours of hands-on hospital experience, which not only solidified my desire to become a physician but also sparked an interest in biomedical engineering. From then on, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others through medicine and engineering. But my journey to achieving my educational goals hasn't been without its obstacles. As an African American in America, I often found that I wasn't given all the resources I needed to pursue my dreams like others, especially when it came to paying for college. Even at my school, there was never anyone to give us advice for general life tips such as college. I felt like I was left to figure it all out on my own. However, I refused to let these obstacles stand in my way. I knew that I had to take matters into my own hands if I wanted to achieve my dreams. And so, I started the first-ever Black Student Union (BSU) at my school. With this BSU, I created a community where the black student body could come together, connect, and support each other. The foundation of our BSU was based on our idea of the "Three E's": Explore, Educate, and Empower. With this foundation, we were able to host school-sponsored college fairs to allow our members to explore many other college opportunities. We also had guest speakers such as admission officers and financial aid advisors come to give advice on college applications. Through my hard work and dedication, I was able to create a community that gave people like me an opportunity and education that were often not allotted. It wasn't easy, but I knew that it was worth it. I wanted to be that change in college, and make a difference wherever I went. I firmly believe that we cannot just wish for change, but we have to make it happen. In the end, the obstacle I faced taught me that with hard work, dedication, and a strong support system, I could achieve my goals. I learned that it's important to create the change you want to see in the world, and that sometimes, that change starts with you. As I continue my educational journey, I know that I will face many more obstacles, but I also know that I am strong enough to overcome them. In conclusion, my educational goals are to become a family medicine physician and biomedical engineer, and to make a difference in the lives of others through medicine and engineering. Although I faced many obstacles, I was able to overcome them by starting the first-ever Black Student Union (BSU) at my school, and creating a community where the black student body could come together, explore, educate, and empower each other. I hope to continue to be a change-maker in college, and make a difference wherever I go.

Volunteering has played a significant role in shaping my mindset and the person I am today. Growing up as a black American, I experienced financial difficulties and lacked access to resources that would have helped me achieve my goals. However, through volunteering, I was able to find my passion and gain the necessary experience to pursue my dream career in medicine. The Lauren Czebatul Scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to continue my studies and achieve my goals. Volunteering allowed me to gain firsthand experience in the medical field and develop a passion for helping others. Through the Clinical Rotation Program at my high school, I was able to volunteer at medical clinics around my city, which exposed me to a variety of medical procedures and helped me discover my passion for medicine. The experience taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, which are values that I still hold dear to this day. Despite my passion for medicine, I realized that the cost of pursuing this career would be a significant barrier to achieving my goals. Like many Americans, I would have to take out student loans and potentially go into debt to pay for my education. However, the Lauren Czebatul Scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to pursue my dreams without worrying about the burden of student loans. Furthermore, the scholarship would provide me with the opportunity to give back to my community. I have seen firsthand the impact that a lack of education and resources can have on young people, and I want to be a positive influence and provide the resources and education needed for success. With the scholarship, I would have the opportunity to pursue my education and become a role model for others in my community. In conclusion, the Lauren Czebatul Scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to achieve my goals and give back to my community. Through volunteering, I have discovered my passion for medicine and gained the necessary experience to pursue my dreams as it has taught me the importance of helping others and has given me a sense of purpose. The scholarship would enable me to obtain a higher education without worrying about the financial burden of student loans and give me the opportunity to help others in my community. With this scholarship, I hope to continue volunteering and making a positive impact in the world.

Growing up as an African American, healthy food options were not readily available where I lived. As I grew older, I began to notice the prevalence of unhealthy fast food options in my predominantly African American community, while healthier options were only found on the other side of town. This realization sparked my interest in health science and the importance of providing access to healthy food for all individuals. My journey towards a healthier lifestyle began when I discovered the benefits of a plant-based diet. I was influenced by various sources such as books, documentaries, and my own health struggles. After transitioning to a plant-based diet, I saw a significant improvement in my health and overall well-being. As an African American, I understand the struggles that my community faces with obesity and other health problems due to a lack of access to healthy food options. It is unacceptable that disadvantaged groups often do not have the resources to obtain better health and are stuck in a cycle of unhealthiness. In the future, I plan to pursue a career in nutrition and public health. Through my work, I hope to expand access to healthy food options and end the cycle of unhealthiness in disadvantaged communities. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life, regardless of their background. In addition to my career in health science, I also plan to pursue politics. By advocating for policies that prioritize access to healthy food options, I can help make a lasting impact on communities that have been neglected for far too long. In addition to my personal experiences, I have also been inspired by the work of many health advocates and public figures who have championed the cause of access to healthy food options for all. People like Michelle Obama, who launched the Let's Move campaign to combat childhood obesity and improve access to healthy food in underserved communities, and Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, who played a key role in exposing the Flint water crisis and fighting for the health of her community. Through my studies in Nutrition and Public Health, I hope to learn more about the root causes of health disparities and develop effective strategies for promoting healthy lifestyles and access to nutritious food options. I also plan to use my knowledge and skills to advocate for policies that address the systemic barriers to healthy living, particularly for communities of color and other marginalized groups. I believe that everyone deserves access to the resources and information they need to make healthy choices and live their best lives. With my education and passion for health advocacy, I am confident that I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around me and help create a healthier, more equitable world for all. Overall, my passion for health science and my desire to help those in need drive me toward my career path. I am inspired to be the change that the world needs, and I am committed to making a difference in the lives of others.

I've always had a passion for tennis. It's a sport that has taught me so much about myself and helped me grow as an individual. As an African American player, I've faced many challenges, particularly in a sport dominated by white players. However, I've never let those challenges stop me. Instead, I've used them to motivate me to become a better player and a stronger person. Playing tennis has taught me a lot about myself. I've learned that I'm resilient, focused, and hardworking. These qualities have been especially important when dealing with racism and discrimination on the court. There have been many times when I've been undermined or underestimated because of the color of my skin. It's been tough, but it's also made me more determined to succeed. One particular incident that I'll never forget happened during a tournament a few years ago. I was playing against a white player, and things were going well until he started making derogatory comments about me and my race. I was angry and upset, but I didn't let it show. Instead, I used that anger as motivation to beat him, and I did. I remember hitting an ace down the T to win the match, and the feeling of satisfaction and triumph that came with it was indescribable. That experience made me realize that racism is prevalent in every aspect of our lives, and tennis is no exception. It's frustrating, but it's also motivated me to fight against discrimination and injustice. On the court, there's a level of respect that every player deserves, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. Despite these challenges, I don't want to be known just for my tennis skills. I want to be a leader who inspires passion and drive in others. As I pursue my International Relations and Global Studies major in college, I hope to become someone who can make a positive impact on the world. I recently had a conversation with a younger player who was struggling with racism on the court. I told him that he shouldn't let those comments bring him down, but instead, use them as motivation to become a better player. I could tell that my words resonated with him, and it felt good to be able to inspire someone. In conclusion, tennis has played an important role in my life, teaching me about resilience, focus, and determination. As an African American player, I've faced many challenges, but I've also become a stronger person as a result. I hope to use my experiences to inspire and empower others, and to become a leader who can make a positive impact on the world. And who knows, maybe one day I'll hit a perfect forehand winner down the line to win a Grand Slam title and show the world that anything is possible.

As I sat in the waiting room of the foot surgery center, I couldn't help but feel uneasy. Feet were never my favorite thing to look at, but I knew that this experience would be invaluable to my clinical rotation program. As I watched the medical staff bustle about, I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Excuse me, are you here for the clinical rotation program?" a friendly voice asked. I turned to see a woman around my age, wearing scrubs with a friendly smile on her face. "Yes, that's me," I replied, grateful for the distraction. "I'm Ashley," she said, extending her hand. "I'm a surgical technician here. Would you like me to show you around and answer any questions you might have?" I breathed a sigh of relief and followed her into the surgical suite, where I saw the latest technology in action. From high-resolution cameras to surgical robots, I was amazed at how technology had transformed the industry. Ashley noticed my fascination and began to explain how each piece of equipment worked. "See that monitor over there? That's connected to a high-definition camera that allows the surgeon to see inside the patient's foot without having to make large incisions," she said, pointing to a large screen. "And those robotic arms help the surgeon make precise movements with less strain on their hands." I was amazed at how technology had improved surgical precision and patient outcomes. As we walked around the surgical suite, Ashley shared stories of how patients' lives had been changed through these innovative technologies. "I've seen patients who couldn't walk before the surgery, walk out of here pain-free," she said with a smile. "It's amazing what technology can do when it's used for good." I nodded in agreement, feeling inspired by Ashley's passion for her work. Our conversation sparked an interest in me that I never thought possible. As I walked out of the surgery center that day, I knew that I had found my calling. I wanted to be part of the technology industry that created such impactful solutions for people. As I walked out of the surgery center that day, a newfound passion had taken root within me. The dialogue with Ashley had revealed the transformative power of technology in the healthcare industry, and I was determined to be a part of it. Witnessing how technology could improve patient outcomes and change lives in significant ways had inspired me to pursue a career in the technology industry, where I could make a difference in people's lives. I realized that this was my calling, and I was ready to use my clinical experience and academic knowledge to bring about positive change. With the support of the "Andrea M Taylor Future Doctors" scholarship, I am confident that I can achieve my dream of becoming a trailblazer in the technology industry and make a difference not only in my own life but also in the lives of others who face similar barriers.

This goal played into my choices of colleges, as when researching, I came across Alumni Whitter C. Atkinson, who stood out to me. Despite his circumstances, alongside the hardships endured by African Americans in his time, he still persevered in creating his own hospital, Clement Atkinson Memorial Hospital to serve the needs of the African American community who faced racial discrimination. In a world where racial discrimination continues to be at an all-time high, I genuinely connected with Mr. Atkinson’s aspirations in serving our community which had been disadvantaged from the start. From that alumni, I discovered the HBCU Howard University; or more so the topic of HBCUs themselves! I hope to pursue coursework that will help me both challenge and expand my current mindset. Classes such as PSYC-030 that examine the psychological experiences of African Americans will better educate me on topics such as structural racism. I hope to be the Whitter C. Atkinson of the 20th century, being the bridge between healthcare, affordability, and racial awareness.
