Hi, my name is Tanner Maurer. Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of enlisting in the military to serve our country. I have always found such satisfaction in being fit and strong to protect others. I enjoy boxing, crossfit, weight lifting, and running. My career path has taken me towards fire fighting because it has provided me an opportunity to use my strength and abilities to protect others and serve my community. I strive to be a good man, a good husband, and a good soon-to-be father. My first born son is due in August and we couldn't be more excited. I am taking full-time Spring, Summer, and Fall semester classes to be able to graduate from BYU in December 2024. I volunteer on the weekends and am currently training at Mapleton's Fire Academy. My wife is working as a marriage and family therapist before she takes an unpaid maternity leave when our son is born. She is currently working to provide for our family. We would be greatly appreciative of any scholarships that could help support both my dreams of entering a career I am passionate about as well as to sustain my family until I can get hired at a nearby fire department.

My wife's been very patient with me because it's taken me nearly five years to figure out what I want to do for a career. She encouraged me to meet up for lunch with an old friend to pick his brain on firefighting. What are the odds that Captain Evans overheard our conversation at Aubergines and invited me to apply for a volunteer position at Mapleton's Fire Department. Since January 20204, I have been volunteering as an EMT and training to complete Mapleton's fire academy in the fall. Volunteering as an EMT firefighter is a commitment driven by a desire for personal growth, community spirit, and professional aspirations.
The training and experiences gained as an EMT firefighter are extensive and varied. I have acquired valuable skills in emergency medical care, fire suppression, and rescue operations. This role has demanded physical fitness, mental resilience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure, which has led to significant personal growth and character development.
Volunteering has fostered a strong sense of community. I have created a bond with my comrades and a sense of pride in contributing to the safety and well-being of my community. The bond I have formed through shared experiences in challenging situations and training has created a strong sense of camaraderie. This team spirit and mutual support is one key reason I am committed to my role.
Lastly, for me, volunteering as an EMT firefighter has offered unparalleled hands-on experience. It has provided a practical understanding of emergency response, patient care, and teamwork in high-stress environments. This experience can be invaluable as I pursue a career as a professional firefighter and eventual paramedic.
In summary, volunteering as an EMT firefighter has been largely driven by community engagement, personal and professional development, and the rewards of making a significant impact on others' lives. The sense of accomplishment and gratitude I have from this position has enhanced my mental well-being and provided a strong sense of purpose that I have been searching for in a career.
