Bio

My name is Sy’Maya Summiel. I am a hard working, determined, and motivated individual. I strive to do my best and make the most out of the activities I engage in. I don’t consider myself socially outgoing, but I enjoy being supportive and caring to those around me. When faced with challenges, I don’t give up, instead I work harder and try my best to overcome that difficulty. I am very organized and goal oriented. I would like to pursue a career in music in the future. My dream career is to become a flautist within a professional symphony orchestra and play in the Broadway orchestra pit at various shows. I also plan to be an educator for music within my community. I am a firm believer in the push for equity in education. Being a Black woman in the classical-instrumental performance and instrumental teaching industry is difficult and rare to see. I wholeheartedly believe a new sense of cultural appreciation in the classroom and band/orchestral setting will bring more smiles upon unrepresented faces. I want to be the music teacher in my small, diverse town that inspires the youth to express their creativity through music and know they can do anything they put their minds to, despite those who may bring them down. I’m looking forward to achieving that goal. I am grateful for all of the support I continue to receive from family, friends, mentors, and teachers. Thank you. God has truly blessed me!
