Global Girls In STEM Scholarship
My experiences in STEM have significantly shaped my career aspirations, particularly as a young woman breaking into a field where we are often underrepresented. From the moment I joined my high school’s robotics club, I was acutely aware of the gender imbalance, being one of only a handful of girls in a sea of boys. Initially, it was challenging to assert myself among peers who occasionally questioned my capabilities based on stereotypes. However, these encounters only served to fuel my determination to excel and paved the way for my aspiration to become a NICU nurse—a role that perfectly aligns with my passion for science and my innate desire to help others, especially the most vulnerable.
What drives my passion for STEM is the profound impact it can have on people's lives and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference. During a pivotal visit to a local hospital, I observed nurses using state-of-the-art technology to monitor the vital signs of newborns in the NICU. Witnessing the seamless integration of technology and compassionate care solidified my aspiration to enter the healthcare field. As a NICU nurse, I plan to use my STEM skills not only to provide the best possible care for newborns but also to offer critical support to their families, thereby solving real-world problems on an intensely personal level.
Participating in extracurricular STEM activities has further honed my leadership skills and deepened my commitment to my career goals. Volunteering at the local hospital provided a hands-on perspective of the healthcare environment and taught me invaluable lessons in leadership and teamwork. I led a project to organize a health awareness workshop for new parents, where I coordinated with healthcare professionals to ensure that the information presented was both accurate and accessible. This role required me to lead by example, make informed decisions swiftly, and take initiative when challenges arose. The experience not only reinforced my leadership skills but also my ability to empathize and connect with others—a crucial trait for a future nurse. I am committed to applying these skills in my career, leading my team in the NICU to deliver the highest standard of care and support to our patients.
Through my journey, I've realized that overcoming obstacles, such as gender biases and stereotypes, has only reinforced my resolve to succeed in STEM. I am driven by the vision of a future where my contributions can make a tangible difference, and I am excited to continue on this path, equipped with the skills, determination, and empathy necessary to lead and inspire others.
Nickels Student Athlete Scholarship
Being a student-athlete in high school is a rewarding yet challenging experience that offers a unique blend of opportunities and obstacles. Through my journey as a starting defensive player on the high school soccer team, I have encountered numerous challenges that have ultimately taught me invaluable lessons applicable both on and off the field.
One of the primary challenges faced when playing sports in high school is the balancing act between academics and athletics. As a student-athlete, managing time efficiently becomes crucial. Practices, games, and travel can consume a significant amount of time, leaving less room for academic pursuits and personal life. I learned early on the importance of prioritizing tasks and maintaining a strict schedule to meet both my athletic commitments and academic responsibilities. This experience honed my time management skills and taught me the value of discipline and dedication.
Another challenge is the physical and mental demands of being an athlete. High school sports require rigorous training, which can lead to physical fatigue and, at times, injuries. The mental pressure to perform well in games and maintain a spot on the team can also be overwhelming. However, these challenges have taught me resilience and perseverance. I have learned to push through difficult training sessions and maintain a positive attitude even when faced with setbacks. This resilience is a crucial skill that extends beyond sports, helping me tackle obstacles in everyday life.
Being a student-athlete also means learning to work effectively within a team. Soccer, as a team sport, emphasizes collaboration and communication. I learned the importance of relying on my teammates and supporting them in return. This experience has strengthened my ability to work collaboratively, a skill that is essential in any future career, particularly in nursing, where teamwork is vital for providing optimal patient care.
Additionally, participating in sports has instilled in me a strong sense of leadership. As a defensive player, I was often responsible for directing the team's defensive strategies during games. This role required quick decision-making and the ability to motivate and inspire my teammates. These leadership experiences have boosted my confidence and ability to take initiative, qualities that I aim to bring into my future nursing career.
Moreover, being a student-athlete has taught me the importance of setting goals and working diligently to achieve them. Whether striving to improve my soccer skills or aiming for academic excellence, setting clear goals has been a driving force in my personal development. This lesson in goal-setting and perseverance is invaluable in any endeavor, including my future aspirations in the healthcare field.
In conclusion, playing sports throughout high school presents various challenges, from balancing academics to managing physical demands. However, the lessons learned from being a student-athlete—time management, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and goal-setting—are invaluable and have shaped me into a well-rounded individual. These experiences have not only enriched my high school years but have also prepared me for future challenges, equipping me with skills and qualities that will serve me well in my nursing career and beyond. As I move forward, I am grateful for the opportunities and lessons that high school sports have provided, shaping me into the person I am today.
