Bio

My name is Summer Collier. My biggest goal in life is to be genuinely happy within myself and the life that I live as an adult. I am a reliable and hard-working young woman, and I know that that will take me very far in life. In college I plan to study to become an Ultrasound technician. Ultra sounds can detect many things, including pregnancy, birth defects, tumors, cancers, and more. Knowing that my profession can put me in the position to help others brings me joy. My life has not been the easiest, but I've used my pain as motivation and kept my faith in God. I know that I am a headstrong young lady who will go far!

Rev. Herman A. Martin Memorial Scholarship
My name is Summer Collier, I am a senior from Camden Fairview High School, and I am applying for this scholarship because it would take a weight off of my shoulders, regarding my next chapter in life after high school. Growing up, I was always great in school, but I thought college was out of the picture for me. I did not want my single mother to come out of her pockets to put me through school, knowing how expensive it is. My mom has played a huge role and my life, and she has managed to take care of my siblings and me, all while managing her sicknesses. Watching my mother battle lupus, carpal tunnel, and many other things has been hard. She has kept two jobs for as long as I can remember so that she was able to take care of everything. That is why I want to become an Ultrasound technician. You never really know how bad it feels to watch someone you love constantly be in physical pain until you witness yourself. Seeing my mother limp after getting off of work and constantly having doctor appointments affected me. It made me sad, but strong. It showed me that if my mom can continue to persevere through her bad times, I can too! My mother always told me that she wanted me to be better than her, and every day that is what I strive to do, through my grades and involvement in school. I have seen and experienced a lot for my age, and all that I have been through has molded and matured me. I am excited about the young woman I am becoming, regardless of everything that I have been through. I have kept my faith in God throughout all my endeavors. I think that I should be chosen for this scholarship because I know that I am a reliable and hardworking student, even with being involved in clubs, and extracurricular activities. Don’t get me wrong- being on top of things can sometimes get very stressful. There are some nights that I am tired, but I always look at the bigger picture and get my work done. Any time I feel stressed or discouraged I think of my goals, and it gives me the motivation I need to keep going. I am very self-aware and I realize that every day will not be a good day, but it is my job to make every day count! I have maintained a 4.0 GPA and kept the title of an Arkansas Scholar throughout High School. I am very involved in my community and I love giving back. I am also involved in multiple clubs and extracurricular activities. After High School, I plan to attend college at Southern Arkansas University, complete a postsecondary program, and get a diagnostic medical sonography degree. I know that the courses will be challenging, but I am up for the challenge! Sonography is something that I have been interested in for a while. I have been looking into sonography since I was in the ninth grade. Ultrasound technicians can detect pregnancy, birth defects, tumors, cancers, and more. It gives me joy knowing that my future could put me in a position to help others, especially people in my family who have health problems. I would be so grateful for this scholarship because I know that with the right help, I could go far in college and even after. I am beyond thankful to have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, and I thank you in advance for your consideration.
