Throughout high school, I did not really know what I wanted to do & I was very confused about what I was passionate about. When I got into my woodshop class sophomore year & my teacher wanted me to pursue vinyl/t-shirt design, engraving, & designing artwork for the plasma table. This is what made me realize that I love graphic design. People say that they just click with other people, & that's how I felt with design. I started designing things for the plasma table, t-shirt designs, fliers, and designs for different wood engravings. All kinds of little stuff that made me want to pursue graphic design. After I realized I enjoyed graphic design it was about the time I started my senior project. I designed multiple t-shirts, fliers, posts, & posters. I really learned to love what I was doing. It made me realize that you can love what you do, you don't have to dread going to work every day. I also became the media advisor for my interact club senior year & really heavily started designing frequent posts & fliers for the club. My whole job title was to promote what we were doing & get people interested in the club through graphic design. For the first time in my life, thanks to graphic design, I am excited to go to school. I am passionate about graphic design & my ideal future is a job in graphic design & ad marketing. I think I could be successful in this field due to my previous graphic design experience & my passion for it. Throughout my experience with graphic design I have designed over 20 different t-shirt designs, multiple logos, around 10 promotion posts, approximately 10-15 event fliers, 2 designs for the plasma table, around 5 informational info graphics, & with my daily work in the shop throughout the past three years I would say between 25-50 designs to be engraved. I don't think that this is going to be a passing phase for me because I have such a continuous drive to do the work, I think that the numbers speak for themselves to show that I am passionate about what I am doing. I hope that one day I can retire from my day job & open my own screen printing shop, there I will design print & sell t-shirts for people, which is really my ultimate goal. During my senior project the man that owned the screen printing shop helped me a lot because his wife has also had breast cancer, making the cause very near to his heart. I could not have done this project without him, & someday I hope to help someone the way he has helped me & many other people.

Hi, my name is Stevie Province and I am a senior at Orofino Junior Senior High School. I have lived in Orofino since I was two years old, & in Wyoming before that. I am Tlingit, which is an Alaskan tribe I am a part of. I was raised in a family of 8 with 4 older siblings & 1 younger. I will be a first generation college student. I have always been encouraged to follow my hobbies & interests. I have played volleyball, basketball, softball, & track throughout middle school & high school. I also played club volleyball for a couple years. I have been a team captain for volleyball & basketball. I am also an interactor! I am the Interact media director for my high school club. Interact is a rotary partnered club that focuses on volunteering & giving back to the community. I am very passionate about volunteer work & giving back. For my senior project I took on Dig for a Cure. Dig for a Cure is a volleyball game that is dedicated to people with cancer. I planned the day in its entirety to include a c team, jv, & varsity game, a live auction, a silent auction, a bake sale, a red bull stand, two dinner options, & an alumni game. This project forced me to go outside my shell & ask people for donations, I designed fliers & T-shirts, I job shadowed a t shirt screen printer, & overall just learned a lot about myself. I went on to raise $12,000 for local cancer patients, it is my proudest achievement. The summer before my Senior year, my best friend died in a car accident. This was a major setback for me, I think that at first I kind of shut down & stopped doing things, but recently I learned that it is better to do things positively in honor of him, than sulk in the loss. I love my family more than anything, but because it is so large there is no way my parents can afford to pay for my college. I am paying for my college in its entirety. I have been signing up for every scholarship possible to do so. I also plan on saving all the money I make this summer to go towards my college fund. I am also hoping I will have time during the school year to maintain a part time job. This scholarship would help me majorly. If I got this scholarship I don't think I would need to get a job during the school year & it would really allow me to fully immerse myself in my studies & goals. This scholarship is a chance for me to achieve my dreams & create a bright future for myself. I want to go to college for graphic design & ad marketing. I then want to pursue a graphic design career & eventually incorporate photography & create my own business. I would also love to eventually settle down out of that career & open up a print making shop for t shirts, however that is more of a retirement dream of mine. I want to pursue graphic design & ad marketing so I can have that opportunity to market myself & my abilities in the right way. I also want to pursue volunteering further, I will be attending a rotary youth summer camp in June & hopefully joining my rotary club in the fall.

My inspiration for getting involved in my community is the joy it brings. I mean this in multiple ways, the first being that when you volunteer & help other people seeing the smile you can bring, the second is how thankful people are for your help. Volunteering brings me not only the people I help a smile, but it also brings me a smile. I really did not realize how big of a difference one small person could make. The thing that really got me into volunteering was interact club. I signed up for interact club one day because one of my older friends told me to, but then I really grew to fall in love with volunteer work. Seeing how big of an affect Rotary leaves it really showed me that every single person that volunteers makes a difference. I think it is truly a ripple affect, when you are dedicated & passionate about something, people often take notice, interest, & often they follow suit. For me whether it is organizing a large project, participating in service projects, or even just helping out a friend or neighbor, the affect of helping people creates a sense of community & joy. I relate this back to the pay it forward trend at drive-thru restaurants, it is a smaller more clear representation of how if you help someone they will want to help someone else. When people see someone doing good it often inspires them to do good as well, this is how I choose to influence change in my community. When people initially the word "volunteer" they moan & groan, but often times I find that people who do not think they will like volunteering find it surprisingly rewarding. I have lots of friends that would make excuses anytime I would invite them to community cleanup events, or volunteering opportunities, but I wouldn't push because I know when you are pushed to do something you are less likely to want to do it. However I would always keep asking, encouraging, & giving them opportunities to be involved & learn the feeling that I get. I find more often than not these people really learn to love volunteering & it not only makes them feel good about themselves, makes a better community physically, but it also nurtures community relationships. The sheer number of people you meet & build relationships with is so rewarding. I have met so many people that mean the world to me, & have taught me so much about being the person I am today.

I think that if I could make one change to the mental health world I would start early & integrate it into our education system. If we could make mental health issues a little more normalized & teach kids that it's okay not to be okay we would be leaps & bounds from where we are now. I think that there is a certain connotation against mental health problems, & if we could almost fundamental-ize mental health into our education systems kids would understand more about themselves. Understanding the way you feel & why you feel that way is so important because understanding yourself makes it easier to grow, cope, & move on form things that you would otherwise sulk in. I personally feel like when I understand why I feel a certain way it makes it so much easier to get over that feeling.

One change I would make to the world is the education standard. The education standards have lowered majorly in recent years between simply academic subject to classes like physical education. I don't think that we are held to the standard we should be, & by increasing the value of learning depth we also increase the value of the students. Students benefit from being pushed academically, & it ultimately helps build a stronger student & future for that student. I think that we have a lot of students that push & push & push until their teachers simply give up on pushing the kids any harder. I won't say that I haven't ever moaned or groaned over an assignment but I do think that the lack of respect for teachers fuels the fire that is our depreciating education system. The work ethic, respect, responsibility, & physical fitness levels that are at play in my generation compared to my grandparents is seriously worry-some. I think that along with all the good things that have come from us developing as a country young people have also developed a sense of entitlement, an "I don't need this" type of attitude. I think that this is such a dangerous idea because the next set of doctors, lawyers, & future heads of our country use quizlet for tests. So to combat this danger I think that we need to raise our education standard, & along with it we need to change the way the youth interact with elder people. I think we have developed a very liberal education system which I am not saying is a bad thing, but I am saying that our teachers deserve more respect & appreciation for their work. As a high-schooler I see the way teachers are treated, & I hear all the jokes about their pay grade, these questions issue the prompt, why become a teacher? I understand that people still will want to teach because it means a great deal to impact someones life in the way that teachers do, I am just trying to raise the the question why would people want to do it if they are going to be mistreated. I also think its important to raise the level of physical education standards because of the rising levels of obesity in youth. To circle back, the change I would make would be to raise the education standards, raise the physical education standards, & ultimately raise the level of respect we give to education workers.

Hello, my name is Stevie Province & the movie that has the greatest impact on my life is Miracle Season. Miracle Season is a movie about a girl who plays volleyball, but the summer before senior year she dies in an accident. All the people in the movie have a really hard time moving on & grieving but eventually, they get through it for the girl. Instead of wallowing in loss, they did things in her honor. This movie has impacted me so strongly because I feel such a real connection to it. The summer before my senior year I went through a similar experience. On July 31 2023 my best friend, Drew Hanna, got into a fatal car accident. Drew was the kind of person who lit up rooms with his smile, & could always make you laugh. Somewhere along the way, I learned that it was better to talk about him with a fond smile & share memories rather than sit in a dark room by myself swallowing tears. Drew was an incredible student-athlete, the smartest person I have ever met, & an incredible friend. Somewhere along the way, I learned that being smart like Drew is impressive, & not something to be embarrassed of. The loss of Drew Hanna was devastating for the whole community. Losing Drew felt like the world came crashing down, his loss left the feeling that nothing was ever right. I felt hopeless & empty without Drew, he was truly the glue in our friend group. Somewhere along the way, I learned to show everyone the empathy that Drew showed me. I also felt like losing Drew meant losing so many pieces of myself, Drew knew everything about me that I was scared to show other people. Somewhere along the way, I realized that showing people how much you care isn´t a bad thing. But Drew made everyone feel that way, & that's what made him so special. Drew was also our quarterback, our ace, & our ASB president. Somewhere along the way, I learned that being passionate about sports made them way more rewarding than just playing for fun. Replacing the holes that Drew´s loss left us with was devastating. It was so hard to go back to school in the fall & play sports, go to football games, pep rallies, & homecoming, everything was so hard without him. But somewhere along the way, I learned that doing things for Drew, in his honor, was much better than sulking over his loss. Somewhere along the way, I learned to Live Like Drew.

I have had a lot of high school teachers influence me, but none of them influence me the way that my shop teacher did. My shop teacher, Mr. Savage, is an incredible guy. I am horrible at cabinet making, & welding, but Mr. Savage has given me diverse opportunities to stay in the shop & work. He got me into graphic design, t-shirt making, engraving, & so much more. He taught me so many life lessons throughout my 4 years in the shop. I may have learned how to run the table saw but I also learned how to be a good person. Mr. Savage has felt like a father figure throughout high school. I think I have cried to him multiple times each year, & not once has he made me feel bad about falling behind or making poor decisions. He can be painfully honest, but I think Mr. Savage was the perfect influence on me in my young adult life. Mr. Savage taught me trial & error; by that I mean he gave me a task & made me learn how to complete it. He sent me into the computer lab with the design software & he made me figure things out on my own instead of coddling me. This taught me that even though it is easier to just ask 100 questions, it is better for you to learn & figure things out on your own. He also made me feel like the things that I thought were the most life changing important events that were just so horrible were really just trivial things that I did not need to stress about the way that I did. In the beginning I was not the best student for Mr. Savage. I turned everything in late, but he helped me focus in & learn to turn things in on time. I was always late to class, but he taught me that being punctual is best. I drug my feet when asked to do things I did not want to do, but he taught me you don't have to be embarrassed to do your work just because you aren't great at what you're doing yet. But the greatest thing Mr. Savage taught me was that not everyone knows how to be a good human yet. While he was talking about my first breakup it was a universal lesson. He taught me forgiveness, he taught me not to say things I don't mean just because I'm mad, he taught me how to apologize to someone, & he taught me how to be good to people who weren't good to me. I think that Mr. Savage has taught me how to be the person I am today, & without his advice I think I would have let a lot more hate into my heart, & I would still be the nervous freshman who went places late & didn't turn in work.

Hi! My name is Stevie Province & I am a senior at Orofino Junior Senior High school. I have lived in Orofino my entire life with my family of 8. I have 4 older siblings & 1 younger sibling that have taught me how important it is to be involved in the community. I play Softball, Volleyball, & basketball. I also play club volleyball for a team in Lewiston. I am a very active member of Interact club. Interact club is a community service based club that partners with Rotary to give back. I am the Media Director of Interact club. I also did Dig for a Cure as my senior project. Dig for a Cure is a volleyball game dedicated to people past & present fighting cancer. I raised $12,000 for local cancer patients. I am very passionate about giving back to my community. I don't know exactly what I want to do going forward in my life, but what I do know is that I want to continue volunteering. It is so heart warming to see the affect you can leave on people when they really need help. I think that eventually I would want to start my own organization for cancer patients. I learned a lot during my senior project & I really formed a passion for helping sick people. I think that volunteering is super important & detrimental for our community. I think that the people that I would like to help can't do the same things I can do to help themselves. What I am trying to say is that because they are sick, I don't think that they have the same ability as I do to help themselves in ways that I could help them. Not nearly enough people volunteer, but almost everyone will need help from a volunteer in some point of their life. Even today I helped Rotary move things out of an estate sale into a storage space for a future sale. You never think you'll need someone elses help until you do. I might be talking in circles but the point I am trying to make is that I think everyone should try volunteering even if they don't think it is for them, because I think everyone can benefit from volunteering one way or another. I think I have benefited from volunteering on both sides of it. Volunteering has taught me a lot about myself & really made me feel good about myself at times, but it has also helped me majorly. I love when people volunteer to come to my high school & teach me about things I am interested in, like forestry, or medical.

It is so heart warming to see the affect you can leave on people when they really need help. If I could start my own charity I think that I would try & focus on helping homeless & impoverished people. The official poverty rate in 2022 was 11.5%. This might sound obvious, but that is a little more than one in ten people. I can't speak for everyone but I think that most people have at least ten people in their lives that they care about. In a perfect scenario I would create a charity by creating more places for the homeless to be able to come in. There are a lot of homeless shelters, but they fill up so fast & the numbers don't meet the needs that need to be met. I would also like to create a recovery branch that would help people get their lives back on track. There could be classes on work etiquette & how to get & keep jobs even when you are living in poverty. I can't imagine how hard it would be to try & have a job while being homeless, so I would love to be able to figure out a way to help people in that scenario by giving them the tools to be successful. I think that if we had more opportunities in the United States for people to be handed all of the tools to be successful & turn their lives around I honestly think they would do it. I don't think anyone would choose a life of poverty for themselves or their child & I just would want to be able to help people create better lives for themselves, & hopefully those people would ultimately feel the same way I do, creating a larger & larger scale affect.

I don't have a dream career per say, there are a lot of different things that I love to do. In an ideal setting, I will go to school for graphic design, ad marketing, & photography. I would love to get a job in a graphic design or ad marketing setting while doing photography on the side. Following that goal as I get older I would like to invest in a screen printing business, I job shadowed a man that owns one during my senior project. My senior project was about breast cancer, & the mans wife had breast cancer & we had some very deep conversations about helping people. This really inspired me. I went on to make about $12,000 for local cancer patients. I could not believe the affect I had when I put in a little elbow grease. I am & will continue to be so proud of that achievement. I also am a part of a group called Interact. Interact partners with Rotary to give back to the community locally & internationally. Between my Interact/Rotary involvement, & my senior project I realized that I want to continue giving back to the community throughout college. I did some research & I realized that sororities do philanthropy & I decided to look into it further. I found a sorority that has what looks to be really great philanthropy involvement on their website. So hopefully this fall when I rush I will get into Kappa Alpha Theta. I thought that going Greek was only for people who wanted to party in college, but when I really looked into it I learned that they do a lot of fundraising & volunteering. It really aligned with my morals so I decided to give it a chance. So to recap, I want to go to University of Idaho in the fall to study Graphic Design & Ad Marketing, while taking photography classes here & there, & rush Kappa Alpha Theta. I will go on to find some sort of Graphic Design job, while continuing to grow photography on the side, then eventually open my own print shop. After all of my career goals are met & I find myself in a stable position, my ultimate dream would be to be in a financial position to help my parents. My parents did everything they could to give me a better life than they had growing up & all I could ever wish for is to return the favor. I ultimately would want to build my parents a house that they can be proud of & comfortable in to settle into retirement in. I can't promise that I will achieve this level of financial stability in time to say thank you to them, but I can dream it.
