In conclusion, my passion for studying the brain and its role in mental health has led me to focus on analyzing brain injuries and how they affect our behavior and mental health. Through my experiences in mental health groups, psychotherapy, meditation, and self-care, I have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health and how somebody can support it. My future goals are to contribute to developing new treatments for those who have suffered from brain injuries and to lead a team of researchers in a project that studies the effects of brain injuries on mental health.
    Jacob Daniel Dumas Memorial Scholarship
    The introduction of a STEM program at my local high school inspired me to pursue a STEM-related field. My high school's STEM program, Louisburg High School, is essentially a rigorous program of honors classes that require more critical thinking than a regular honors class. Dr. Willyetta Mitchell, who has a PhD in education and many other degrees from various colleges, founded the STEM program at Louisburg High School in 2017. She is a very smart woman, but she is no longer with us at the STEM program because she has transferred to another school. She promoted the STEM program by introducing it to eighth graders at local middle schools so they could be exposed to it as a potential program when they reached high school. They could either do this or substitute regular honors and regular classes for the STEM classes. STEM classes increased GPA and helped with real-world thinking, so it was suggested that students give them a try. Even as a freshman, Dr. Mitchell always found the best way to expose us to new career opportunities. Because of the various ways she made students think, she had a significant impact on Louisburg High School with her STEM program. We were required to use the engineering and design process in everything we did for any of her courses because she wanted us to be able to think critically and deeply about situations and find newer solutions to modern-day problems that we might not have thought of. We had a big project called a grand challenge that was due at the end of the year my freshman year. That year's grand challenge topic was how to reduce the amount of pollution entering the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is filled with tons of surface, middle, and deep ocean plastics. To find a solution, we had to go through a series of mini-challenges to gain a better understanding of what plastic pollution is doing to our oceans, particularly the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. And, at the end of the year, we had former NFL player James Brown donate his farm to us for a day so we could present our potential solutions to the problem. Fellow students came up with a lot of good solutions for this problem, such as water skimmers that go on top of the water and remove any surface plastics, increasing the number of refillable water stations to reduce the impact of package to water bottles, and many other different solutions as a result of ours and Dr Mitchell's critical thinking. Dr Mitchell also made it clear that she was available to us on a personal level if anything were to happen at home or if we had any other personal issues. Because of the roles she was playing for students at the STEM Academy, she resembled a school counselor and a director all rolled into one. She even did this for children who were not enrolled in the STEM Academy but who she wished to see succeed (which was everyone). Dr. Mitchell had a significant impact on my life during the two years she was at my local high school, and I cannot thank her enough for what she did to introduce me to more STEM-related fields and passions.
    Bold Science Matters Scholarship
    A study that I did this past year was about students' mental health and how it was being affected by the pandemic and online schooling. It was a rather lofty study because I could not get an entire group of people to participate (I only had 13 people) but I still got a general consensus of what was going on. A majority of the students reported that their mental health and emotional states were declining due to certain things going on with online schooling; the virtual aspect, not having internet, falling in a downward spiral, and other thoughts that were pretty common. On the emotional side of it, a majority reported that they felt sad or depressed, that their emotional state was affecting their personal relationships, and that their emotional state had interfered with their ability to get any work done. Just from those questions alone, it was pretty obvious that the pandemic and online schooling had affected students mental health. After this, it was asked whether or not the students had any support for their emotional states on what to do to get better; some said they didn't have any support and didn't want any, but the majority said that they had friends or close relatives helping them; only 2 said that they had professional support. When asked what they thought were the most common mental health detriments during this time, most said anxiety and stress, poor body image, loneliness, depression, low self-worth, and higher drug usage.     Mark Caldwell Memorial STEM/STEAM Scholarship
    I've had numerous trials and failures in my life, but the procedure of repairing a meniscus tear stands out to me the most. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our football season was pushed back to the beginning of Spring in March 2021. During our second game, I tore my lateral meniscus in my left knee, which created a variety of issues, including my knee locking up on me, difficulty climbing stairs, and other things that normal kids could do. I continued to play the rest of the season and the following wrestling and track seasons on the torn meniscus, lasting about five months. When I couldn't go any further and it seized up on me, I had to have repair surgery in August. The surgery and recovery process was a difficult one. I’m not the type to sit down and be stagnant. I’m always moving and I’ve always been a very energetic and outgoing person. After the surgery, I was forced to sit out of all of my life activities for a minimum of three weeks due to recovery. I ended up having more complications with the surgery than expected, such as blood clots in my lower leg and experiencing a lot of hardship mentally, emotionally, and physically. I was forced to stop doing everything I used to do, including working out and academics, for approximately three weeks. Due to the surgery, I was out of sports for four to six months, which doesn't sit well with me because sports is my life mission and one of the only things that keeps me going. I’ve always been a very outgoing, energetic, “be yourself and be proud of who you are” kind of person and having to sit down with nothing to do but wait for things to get better hurt my morale. This was something that I’ve never experienced, and it was very unexpected, happening all at the same time. I didn’t feel like I had a purpose in life anymore because I couldn’t do anything but sit around and use inanimate objects as my legs. I also tend to be a very impatient and fast person when it comes to living life, so I wanted to get back to being independent immediately. During the three-to-four week period where I was required to use crutches before beginning physical therapy, I had to learn a lot of patience and how to just calm down and let life take its course. When this three-to-four week period was over, I felt a little more optimistic about my recovery. I knew I was going to miss my senior season of football as a result of this, which many people told me was a valid reason to be upset, but in this short amount of time, I had learned enough patience and how to be at peace with myself to be able to simply say, "it is what it is," and realize that life goes on regardless of the circumstances. I’m still healing from surgery, but I’ve progressed enough in the recovery to be able to walk again on my own, all while learning a few valuable lessons: patience is a virtue and that you shouldn’t worry as much about the things that you can’t control in life. Control what you can about your life and let the uncontrollable things take their course.
